Coming Back to Once Human for Isles of Abyss? What Changed and What to Do First (2026)

Isles of Abyss lands on October 22, 2026 (October 21 PT), and if you quit Once Human months ago, that date is why you're reading this. The good news: your account did not evaporate. The confusing news: a lot changed in 2026 — a console launch, a Mod-system overhaul, free appearance edits, Beast Riding — and the "current season" you remember is probably long gone. This guide is the fast path back: exactly what carried over, what's different, and the first five things to do before the ocean expansion goes live.

Quick answer: what a returning player needs to know

Can I just pick up where I left off? Mostly yes — your blueprints, Mods, Battle Pass progress, story progress and key currencies are tied to your account, not the dead server. Your old server almost certainly ended, so you start a new scenario with your account carry-over intact, or hop onto a permanent (no-wipe) server.

- Isles of Abyss (the ocean expansion) launches October 22, 2026 (Oct 21 PT), free, on PS5/PS5 Pro, Xbox Series XS (including Game Pass) and PC, with full cross-play.
  • Your account kept: weapon/armor blueprints and their star ratings, Mods, house blueprints and furniture formulas, Main/Side Story progress, Battle Pass progress, and the currencies Starchrom, Crystgin, Mitsuko's Marks and Silver Keys.
  • Your character level reset to 1 when your old scenario ended — that is normal, not a bug. Leveling is fast the second time because your blueprints and Mods are already unlocked.
  • Biggest changes since early 2026: the console launch (Aug 25, 2026), a complete Mod system overhaul (live since January 21, 2026), free appearance and hair changes (Sept 28), and the Beast Riding overhaul for Beastmasters (Sept 16).
  • Do not panic about "the wipe." Only seasonal servers end; permanent no-wipe servers exist for four scenarios.

Is my account still there — and did I lose everything?

Once Human key art — a survivor with captured Deviations and a mobile walking base, the account progression a returning player picks back up

No, you did not lose everything, and this is the single most common fear from returning players. Once Human's progression is split in two, and understanding the split tells you exactly what survived.

What is permanent and account-wide (it is waiting for you):

  • Weapon and armor blueprints, their star ratings, blueprint fragments, weapon accessories, and Mods.
  • House blueprints and learned furniture formulas (except ones unlocked through Memetics).
  • Main Story and Side Story progress.
  • Battle Pass and task progress.
  • Carry-over currencies: Starchrom, Crystgin, Mitsuko's Marks and Silver Keys.

What moved into Eternaland — your persistent personal hub between scenarios: crafted items, materials, captured Deviations, and regular resources like ammo and medicine. One important catch: your Energy Links did not survive as Energy Links — at scenario end they were converted into Astral Sand, the currency you use to build Eternaland. If you were hoarding Energy Links before your break, that value is now sitting in Eternaland as Astral Sand.

What reset: your character level (back to 1), your Memetics (you re-pick them for the new scenario's balance), map discovery, and your territory placement in the world. Blueprint and Mod unlocks are what make a comeback fast — you are re-leveling a character who already knows how to build the good gear.

One more thing worth saying plainly, because it reassures a lot of returners: entering a new scenario you spend Supply Points to pull a limited amount of gear from your Spacetime Backpack into the fresh run. That cap is deliberate — it keeps veterans and brand-new players close at the start of a scenario, so you are not hopelessly behind a day-one player, and a day-one player is not hopelessly behind you.

Why is my old server gone? Seasonal vs permanent servers

If you log in and your world is missing, your seasonal server ended. Here is the 2026-accurate version of the mechanic, because almost every guide written in 2024 gets it wrong.

A scenario is a themed world (Manibus, The Way of Winter, Evolution's Call, and so on). A server running that scenario advances through numbered phases on a fixed calendar and then ends in a settlement phase. A full scenario run is roughly 63–68 days, ending in a 4-week settlement phase. That is where the stale "servers wipe every six weeks" line comes from — it is wrong, and it has been wrong since 2024.

The part that invalidates most old guides: since 2025, Once Human has permanent (no-wipe) servers for Manibus, Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash and The Way of Winter. A permanent server only ever runs the settlement phase, and that phase never ends. When a normal server's settlement phase finished while you were away, your character data was automatically merged into the matching permanent server — unless you chose to start a fresh scenario instead.

So the real answer to "do Once Human servers wipe?" in 2026 is: only if you choose a seasonal server. Permanent servers never wipe — you just have to log in at least once every 30 days to keep your character there, or a low-population permanent server gets merged into another running the same scenario.

What actually changed while you were gone (2026 edition)

If you left in late 2025 or early 2026, this is the catch-up list that matters:

Once Human official key art — survivors sheltering behind a wrecked vehicle as red-eyed enemies close in, the survival world a returning player re-enters

- Console launch — August 25, 2026 (11:00 PT / Aug 26 in EU and Asia). Once Human is now on **PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series XS (no PS4, Xbox One or Switch), free-to-play, with full crossplay and cross-progression across PS5, Xbox, PC, iOS and Android. If you played on PC and a friend is on console now, you can play together — as long as you are both on an untagged cross-platform server in the same region. Console-only players also have a separate 【Console】-tagged** server pool, which cannot crossplay with PC/mobile.
  • First-person mode is in the game and expanded. It shipped game-wide in version 3.0.1 on July 9, 2026, so if you remember only third-person, toggle it — it now works underwater, while gliding, during Deviation combat, and in climbs and ziplines.
  • The Mod system was overhauled and went live on January 21, 2026. The old "roll four random sub-attributes and re-farm the roll" grind is gone. Now a Mod's four sub-attributes are fixed to its core trait, its level is the sum of those sub-attribute levels (capped at Lv. 17), and obtaining a Mod permanently unlocks its Field Guide entry — account-shared across characters, servers and PvE/PvP. You farm the Mod, not the roll. Duplicate low-level Mods disassemble into Mod Dust, which you spend on weekly Random Mod Crates in the Mod Shop.
  • Appearance, body reshape and color-palette hair dye are now free as of version 3.0.7 (September 28, 2026) — done at a Floor Mirror in your Territory, no item consumed. Only a gender change still costs currency (a Metamorphosis Token, cut from 880 to 300 Crystgin).
  • Beast Riding arrived with the September 16, 2026 update (version 3.0.6): Beastmasters can summon, command and mount an eligible animal with a Beast Whistle and saddle. The animal ranching system was reworked alongside it.
  • Account-wide progression, up to 10 characters per region. The 2024 "one character per account" limit is gone; blueprint and Mod progression is now shared account-wide (your highest overall EXP is retained across the account).

The 5 things to do first before Isles of Abyss

You have a short runway to October 22. Here is the efficient order of operations.

  • Log in and check which server you're on. If your old world is gone, open Scenario Selection and pick either a fresh seasonal scenario or a permanent server — the permanent route is the low-stress choice for a returner who wants a stable base before the expansion.
  • Raid Eternaland. Everything that moved there — captured Deviations, materials, your Astral Sand (your old Energy Links) — is sitting in your private hub. Pull what you need into your new scenario, respecting the Supply Points cap.
  • Relearn your Mods. Because the Mod system changed, open the Mods Field Guide and re-equip the highest-level copies you already own. This is usually a bigger instant power jump than anything you can farm in a day.
  • Reserve Isles of Abyss in-game if the option is live for you. The expansion is free, but reserving/pre-loading where offered gets you launch rewards and avoids a day-one download wall.
  • Decide your platform. With crossplay and cross-progression confirmed, a returning PC player can now jump to PS5 or Xbox — just link your accounts carefully. This is the one trap that can cost you (see the FAQ).

Will Isles of Abyss reset my progress?

No. Isles of Abyss is a content expansion, not a server reset — it adds an ocean/island layer (ship building from raft to mobile maritime base, aquatic vehicles, sea monsters and a deep-sea boss) rather than wiping accounts. Starry Studio bills it as the largest content update to date, and the official description reads as a PvE maritime survival experience (some aggregators tag it PvP; the studio has not labeled it PvP outright, so treat the PvE framing as the lean, not settled fact). It launches free, on all platforms, with cross-play, on October 22, 2026 (Oct 21 PT).

FAQ

Will Once Human delete my account if I didn't play for months? Your account and its permanent progression (blueprints, Mods, story, Battle Pass, carry-over currencies) are safe. The only account that gets dropped is a character left on a permanent server for more than 30 days without logging in — and even then it is a low-population merge rule, not a full account deletion. Your blueprints and Mods are account-wide regardless.

I came back and my character is level 1 — did I lose my progress? No. Your character level resets to 1 every time a scenario ends; that is the intended cycle. Your blueprints, Mods and story progress carried over, so re-leveling is far faster than your first run. Nothing is broken.

Where did my Energy Links go? They were converted into Astral Sand in Eternaland when your scenario ended. Guides that say "your Energy Links carry over" are wrong — look in Eternaland for the Astral Sand instead.

Can I play with friends who are on console now? Yes, if you are both on an untagged cross-platform server in the same region. Crossplay and cross-progression are confirmed across PS5, Xbox, PC and mobile. The 【Console】-tagged servers are console-exclusive and will not let PC or mobile players in, so pick an untagged server to team up.

What's the account-link mistake everyone warns about? Account linking is not merging. If both the account you're linking from and the one you're linking to already have characters, the system cannot keep both — you have to pick one set and lose the other. If you're a returning PC player moving to console, link before you create a console character, so you don't end up choosing between a fresh console character and your real account.

Do I need to buy anything to come back for Isles of Abyss? No. Once Human is free-to-play on every platform, and Isles of Abyss is a free expansion. There is no subscription; the paid layer is cosmetics (bought with Crystgin) and the optional Battle Pass.

Should I start a seasonal or a permanent server as a returner? If you want a stable base to carry into Isles of Abyss without a settlement-phase deadline hanging over you, a permanent server is the calmer choice. If you want the full fresh-scenario progression loop and season goals, start a new seasonal scenario. Either way your account carry-over applies.
