You're seven weeks into Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Dokyo is dead, and Takamura has just told Musashi that now is the time to deal with any unfinished business. That line is the game warning you. The next conversation starts the finale and takes free roam away. This week r/Onimusha had the same question in several forms: can I still get things after the point of no return? The short answer is yes. The longer answer below covers the two collectible types that don't carry into New Game+, plus the upgrade order the trophy hunters recommend. Everything here is as of 2026-10-22 and attributed inline.
Quick answer: The point of no return in Onimusha: Way of the Sword is speaking to Ono no Takamura at the start of "The Clash at Rendaino", the chapter that begins right after you beat Dokyo in "In the Light of an Icy Moon." The game shows a Point of No Return prompt, then locks free roam. Nothing is permanently missable. PowerPyx counts 0 missable trophies, and after the credits Continue on the main menu puts your cleared save back just before The Clash at Rendaino with free roam restored. Even so, finish all 18 Chance Encounters and all 8 Mysteries of Kyoto on this save, because those two do not carry over into New Game+. Keep a manual save before you talk to Takamura.
Where is the point of no return in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
There is exactly one hard lock, and it sits at the very end of the game.
- Chapter: "The Clash at Rendaino." Vandal's 100% walkthrough lists it as the 22nd chapter of the story. It begins at the end of "In the Light of an Icy Moon," after you defeat Dokyo, The Transgressor.
- Trigger: the objective reads "Speak with Takamura." QuestDuo's walkthrough describes it plainly: "Speaking with Takamura will set the final events of the story in motion. Once you do, you will not be able to explore Eastern Kyoto anymore."
- Warning: PowerPyx's trophy roadmap confirms there is "a Point of No Return prompt when trying to start the mission and you will have no free roam anymore." You get one clear chance to back out.
After you speak to him, the story moves straight into its last stretch: a rematch with Benkei (Vandal notes it is "almost identical to your first encounter," with a hammer attack and thrown axes added), several cutscenes, and then the final chapter, "The Way of the Sword." We won't spoil what happens; our ending explainer covers it with spoiler flags.
Until that prompt, nothing locks. PowerPyx's line is the one to remember: "Nothing is missable up to this point, everything can still be accessed."
Is anything missable in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
No trophy, collectible or side quest is permanently missable, and every guide source we checked agrees.
| What | Status as of 2026-10-22 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Missable trophies | 0 | PowerPyx trophy roadmap |
| Glitched trophies | 0 reported | PowerPyx |
| Free roam after the prompt | Locked until the credits roll | PowerPyx, QuestDuo |
| After the credits | Continue returns the save to just before The Clash at Rendaino | PowerPyx |
| Manual saves | 1 autosave slot + 20 manual slots | PowerPyx |
| Total collectibles | 275 locations | PowerPyx collectible guide |
The safety net is the Continue option. When the credits finish, choosing Continue from the main menu loads your completed save back to the moment before The Clash at Rendaino, with free roam open again. PowerPyx: "After completing the final mission you will be brought back to this point." So a missed Lion Dog or an unfinished Chance Encounter is never lost. You just walk back into Kyoto and pick it up.
"Not missable" is not the same as "carries over," though. That difference is where players lose progress.
What doesn't carry over into New Game+?
Carnage, the hardest difficulty, unlocks after your first clear and only runs as New Game+ (see our Carnage and New Game+ guide). Your first save is where some things need to be finished.
PowerPyx's collectible guide splits it like this:
| Carries over into New Game+ | Does NOT carry over |
|---|---|
| Awakened Oni abilities | Mysteries of Kyoto (8) |
| Enhanced basic and special skills | Chance Encounters (18) |
| Hozuki Pouches + pouch enhancements | Sword and gauntlet enhancements |
| Items (but not enhancement materials) | Red Souls |
| Charms + charm enhancements | Spirit Mirror unlock progress |
| Genma Notes | Clothing (see note below) |
| Lion Dogs | — |
What this means in practice:
- Do every Chance Encounter and Mystery of Kyoto on your first save, before the finale or right after it via Continue. Their trophies are No Job Too Small (all 18 Chance Encounters) and Demystified (all 8 Mysteries). Because both reset on New Game+, skipping them means doing them again later, possibly on Carnage's near one-hit-kill difficulty.
- Spend leftover Red Souls before the final mission. They reset on New Game+, and so do sword and gauntlet upgrades. Charm and pouch enhancements carry, so put your last souls there.
- Lion Dogs and Genma Notes are safe. They carry over, so finishing those collectibles on Carnage instead won't cost you anything.
Note on clothing: PowerPyx lists clothing under "doesn't carry over," while IGN's post-game guide says unlocked outfits and cosmetics do carry. The sources disagree, so treat it as unconfirmed and assume the stricter version until you see it yourself.
Point of no return checklist: what to finish before you talk to Takamura
Here's what to clear before you take the prompt. None of it is permanently lost if you skip it, but doing it now saves a reload.
1. Last-chance side content Vandal flags at this chapter
Vandal's walkthrough for "The Clash at Rendaino" lists what usually opens up or is still left at this point:
- Chance Encounter: Hidden Treasure No. 5 (Eastern Kyoto). It also hands you the fifth Skeleton Hozuki, which you need for a Level 3 pouch upgrade. Full details are in our Hozuki Pouch guide.
- Chance Encounter: Ace Archer: Arashiyama. The in-game map lists the rewards as Tamahagane x1 and Oni Stone x2.
- Chance Encounter: Restless Spirits. Rewards on the map: Whetstone x2, Hempen Cloth x2, Tempered Iron x2 and a new Charm (Vandal names it the Charm of Oni Power).
- Note: per Vandal's chance encounter list, Restless Spirits and Hidden Treasure No. 5 only show up once the earlier Hidden Treasure encounters are done. If they're missing from your map, go back and finish Hidden Treasure No. 1–4 first.
- Lion Dogs #17–#21 in Eastern Kyoto, plus the Arashiyama Lion Dogs.
- The Oni Glyph at Horin-ji Temple in Arashiyama, which unlocks Genma Note: Dokyo.
2. Full collectible count, per PowerPyx
| Collectible | Count | Linked trophy |
|---|---|---|
| Mysteries of Kyoto | 8 | Demystified |
| Chance Encounters | 18 | No Job Too Small |
| Lion Dogs | 36 | For the Love of Dog |
| Oni Armaments | 7 | Oni Armory |
| Hozuki Pouches | 9 | Medical Marvel |
| Charms | 15 | Charmed Life |
| Genma Notes | 23 | Genma-ologist |
| Power Stones | 54 | Well-Rounded |
| Oni Stones | 55 | Well-Rounded |
| Fine Silk Cloths | 25 | Dressed to Kill |
| Tamahagane | 25 | Dressed to Kill |
The charm count is PowerPyx's figure for collectible charms. Deluxe and Early Adopter charms come with your edition and aren't world pickups.
3. Buy the Oni Vision treasure skills first
If you're short on collectibles, PowerPyx recommends Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2 and Oni Vision: Search Range: "Together, these three Special Skills make it far easier to track down every collectible in the game." These are Special skills, so they cost Oni Stones, not Power Stones.
4. Upgrade order before the finale (the save-scum route)
PowerPyx lays out a sequence for squeezing the most out of your last free-roam window:
- Make a manual save once you have 150,000 Favor. You can buy Favor trade items at Yorimasa's Monument. That is enough Favor to upgrade your charms, but fully upgrading them also costs 135,000 Red Souls.
- Reload and upgrade all your Hozuki Pouches.
- Reload again and upgrade the three charms you plan to use for the final mission and your next playthrough. Then push skills and equipment as far as they go.
The reason is the carry-over rule above. Charm and pouch upgrades survive into New Game+, while Red Souls and sword/gauntlet levels don't. Pick the three you actually equip; the rest can wait for Carnage.
5. Don't burn your rare consumables
PowerPyx also warns against using items such as Revival Mirrors on the first run: "These items will carry over to NG+ and will be more useful on that difficulty." Items carry over (enhancement materials don't), so anything you save for Carnage is still there when you need it.
6. Make the manual save
There are 20 manual slots. Use one right before you speak to Takamura and don't overwrite it. Continue should bring you back anyway, but a separate save also protects against a corrupted autosave and lets you replay the final fights whenever you like.
What happens after you beat the game?
Once the credits roll you have three options, and they don't block each other:
- Continue: reloads your cleared save just before The Clash at Rendaino with free roam back. Use it to mop up anything from the checklist above.
- Carnage (New Game+): unlocks after one full clear on Story or Action. Once you pick it you can't switch difficulty, and it's required for the True Onimusha trophy. Beating it also unlocks the Bishamon Sword.
- Boss Rematch: the Practice Ground lineup of 18 fights, needed for Glutton for Punishment. Our Boss Rematch guide covers the full list and rewards.
The full order (story → cleanup → Carnage → Boss Rematch) is mapped out in our Platinum trophy guide. PowerPyx rates the platinum 6.5/10 and puts it at about 60–70 hours, with a minimum of two playthroughs.
How do you know you've hit the point of no return?
Three signs, in order:
- Dokyo is dead and the active quest changes to "The Clash at Rendaino — Speak with Takamura." The map screen shows the chapter's own rewards (Tempered Iron x2, Leather x2, Power Stone x2).
- Takamura's dialogue tells Musashi to settle any unfinished business first. QuestDuo describes this as "an important moment to stop and check."
- Talking to him brings up the Point of No Return prompt. Back out if you still have things to do.
If you're still on an earlier chapter, nothing is locked yet. Explore freely.
FAQ
Where is the point of no return in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? It's the conversation with Ono no Takamura at the start of "The Clash at Rendaino," the chapter right after the Dokyo fight. A Point of No Return prompt warns you first. After you confirm, free roam stays locked until the credits.
Are there any missable trophies in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? No. PowerPyx counts 0 missable and 0 glitched trophies out of 52. After the ending, Continue returns you to just before The Clash at Rendaino so you can clean up.
Can I still get collectibles after the point of no return? Not during the finale itself. Once the credits roll, Continue on the main menu puts you back in free roam before The Clash at Rendaino, and every collectible, Chance Encounter and Mystery of Kyoto is available again.
What should I do before The Clash at Rendaino? Clear all 18 Chance Encounters and 8 Mysteries of Kyoto, since they don't carry into New Game+. Spend leftover Red Souls on charm and pouch upgrades, which do carry. Then make a manual save before speaking to Takamura.
Does New Game+ keep my collectibles? Partly. Lion Dogs, Genma Notes, charms, Hozuki Pouches, skills and items (not enhancement materials) carry over. Mysteries of Kyoto, Chance Encounters, Red Souls, sword and gauntlet upgrades and Spirit Mirror unlocks reset, per PowerPyx.
Do I fight anyone before the final boss after the point of no return? Yes. The Clash at Rendaino includes a rematch with Benkei before the story moves into the final chapter, "The Way of the Sword." Vandal describes it as almost identical to the first fight, with a hammer attack and thrown axes added.
