PoE Crafting Guide (3.29): How to Craft Gear With Currency, Essences & Fossils

Crafting in Path of Exile is how you turn a worthless white drop into a piece of gear worth Divine Orbs — or a build-enabling item that simply doesn't exist on the trade market. It's also the single most intimidating system in the game, because PoE never explains any of it in-game. This guide fixes that: every currency orb, the Crafting Bench, essences, fossils, Harvest, and the "metacrafting" tricks the rich use — explained in order, for the current league.

Applies to: Path of Exile 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" (launched 24 July 2026; latest patch 3.29.3b, 4 September 2026). The 3.29 socket-colour overhaul changed how sockets and Chromatic Orbs work — that's covered below. Last verified 2 October 2026.

Quick answer: how does crafting work in PoE?

Crafting in Path of Exile means using currency items to add, remove, reroll, or improve the random modifiers ("affixes") on a piece of gear. A rare item can hold up to six affixes — three prefixes and three suffixes (per Maxroll's crafting documentation). You start from a base item, then layer currency on it: Transmutation/Alteration for magic items, Alchemy/Chaos/Exalted/Divine for rares, plus targeted systems — the Crafting Bench (guaranteed mods), essences (guaranteed mod from a white item), fossils (biased mod pools), and Harvest (tag-based reforges). The expensive end of the game is metacrafting: locking prefixes or suffixes with Divine-Orb metamods so you can slam the mod you actually want.

If you'd rather skip the gamble entirely, the orbs themselves — Divine, Exalted, Chaos — are the fuel for every method here, and you can buy PoE currency with instant delivery instead of grinding it.

The currency orbs: what each one actually does

Everything in PoE crafting is built on currency orbs. Here's exactly what the core crafting orbs do to an item, straight from the in-game descriptions (via poedb.tw):

Making and upgrading items

  • Orb of Transmutation — "Upgrades a normal item to a magic item." (White → blue, 1–2 mods.)
  • Orb of Augmentation — "Augments a magic item with a new random modifier." (Adds the second mod to a blue item.)
  • Orb of Alteration — "Reforges a magic item with new random modifiers." (The classic "alt-spam" orb.)
  • Regal Orb — "Upgrades a magic item to a rare item." (Blue → yellow, keeps existing mods, adds one.)
  • Orb of Alchemy — "Upgrades a normal item to a rare item." (White → yellow in one click.)

Modifying rares

  • Chaos Orb — "Reforges a rare item with new random modifiers." In PoE this rerolls all of an item's mods at once — the workhorse of blind rerolling. (Note: this is not PoE2's single-mod Chaos behaviour; don't conflate the two games.)
  • Exalted Orb — "Augments a rare item with a new random modifier." It adds one new random mod to a rare that still has an open affix slot. On a full six-mod rare it does nothing.
  • Divine Orb — "Randomises the values of the random modifiers on an item." It rerolls the numeric values of your existing mods — it never changes which mods you have. This is why a perfect item still gets "divined" to hit top rolls.
  • Orb of Annulment — "Removes a random modifier from an item." High-risk: you don't choose which one.
  • Orb of Scouring — "Removes all modifiers from an item." Strips a rare back to white.
  • Vaal Orb — "Corrupts an item, modifying it unpredictably." A one-way gamble that can brick or massively upgrade the item.

The two currencies you'll spend the most of at the high end are Divine and Exalted — Divine for perfecting rolls and paying metamod costs, Exalted for adding mods. If you're crafting seriously this league, having a stack ready matters; you can top up Divine and Exalted Orbs here rather than stopping your session to farm.

The Crafting Bench: guaranteed mods on demand

The Crafting Bench lives in your hideout and is unlocked by freeing and leveling the crafting masters through the campaign and endgame. It lets you add a guaranteed modifier to an item — the single most reliable tool a new crafter has.

How it works:

  • A bench craft occupies one affix slot (prefix or suffix), exactly like a rolled mod, and it shows up with a blue tint to mark it as crafted.
  • You unlock recipes by finding them on dropped items and in content; higher tiers of a recipe require you to have found that tier.
  • 3.29 added two handy default bench options: reroll 3 random modifiers (3 Chaos Orbs) and reroll 1 random modifier (8 Chaos Orbs) — useful for nudging an almost-finished item.

Typical workflow for a cheap but solid rare: Alchemy or Essence the base, Annul or reroll the junk mods, then bench-craft the stat you were missing (a resistance, life, or an attribute to hit your build requirements). For most characters, a well-chosen bench craft is the difference between "usable" and "bricked."

Metacrafting: how the rich actually make mirror-tier gear

Metacrafting is using special Crafting Bench metamods to control the outcome of otherwise-random currency. The three that matter (all cost 2 Divine Orbs each to apply, per Maxroll's metacrafting guide — they were moved from Exalted to Divine cost back in patch 3.19):

  • "Prefixes Cannot Be Changed" — locks all prefixes so currency only touches suffixes.
  • "Suffixes Cannot Be Changed" — the reverse; locks suffixes.
  • "Can have up to 3 Crafted Modifiers" — lets you bench-craft two extra mods instead of one.

The classic use: fill the mods you want, craft "Suffixes Cannot Be Changed," then Exalt-slam or Harvest-reforge the open prefixes knowing your good suffixes are safe. This is where the real money goes — a single failed step can cost several Divines, which is why metacrafting is an endgame activity, not a league-start one. Budget it in Divine Orbs and expect variance.

Essence crafting: a guaranteed mod, every time

Essences are a drop-based crafting currency that force a specific guaranteed modifier onto an item. Per poedb.tw, an essence "upgrades a normal item to rare or reforges a rare item, guaranteeing one property" — so you get a Chaos-Orb-style full reroll plus one mod you chose.

Key facts:

  • Essences come in tiers from Whispering → Deafening, with Deafening being the top standard tier (Tier 7). Higher tier = stronger guaranteed mod.
  • Corrupted essences (Horror, Delirium, Hysteria, Insanity — Tier 8) are made by using a Remnant of Corruption and roll uniquely powerful mods.
  • The mechanic is unchanged in 3.29, so essence crafting is one of the most reliable, beginner-friendly ways to force a specific stat (say, a big flat-life or spell-damage roll) onto a base.

Essences are also a strong currency farm in their own right — see our PoE essence farming guide for how to generate them, then spend them here.

Fossils and Resonators: biased crafting from Delve

Path of Exile fossil and resonator crafting cost breakdown — Corroded, Jagged and Metallic Fossils socketed into a Powerful Resonator, the Delve crafting method for biasing a rare item's mod pool

Fossils (found in the Azurite Mine via Delve) let you reforge a rare while biasing the mod pool — a fossil adds weight to certain mod tags and blocks others, so you're not rolling fully blind.

  • Fossils are socketed into Resonators, which have 1 to 4 sockets (Primitive 1 / Potent 2 / Powerful 3 / Prime 4). More sockets = more fossils combined at once for layered biasing.
  • Example: a fossil that blocks caster mods on a weapon dramatically raises your odds of hitting the physical/attack mods you want.
  • Fossil crafting is still live and unchanged in 3.29 — it remains the go-to for bases where you want to push a specific mod category without pure Chaos-spam luck.

To farm the fossils themselves, Delve is the lane — our PoE Delve farming guide covers how to run it efficiently.

Harvest crafting: tag-based reforges

A Path of Exile Harvest reforge craft — "Reforge a Normal, Magic or Rare item as a Rare item with random modifiers, including a Defence modifier" — the tag-based crafting Harvest is known for

Harvest crafting happens at the Sacred Grove (the league mechanic that spawns in your maps) and uses Crystallised Lifeforce in three colours — Primal, Vivid, and Wild. You spend lifeforce on crafts at the Horticrafting station.

What Harvest does today:

  • Tag reforges — e.g. "reforge a rare item with random modifiers, including a Lightning modifier," or reforge while being "much more likely to receive the same modifiers." These let you steer a reroll toward a damage type or keep an item's theme.
  • It's a powerful finisher for pushing toward a specific mod family without buying expensive fractured bases.

One honest caveat: modern Harvest is the reduced, reforge-focused toolkit, not the original 2020 "add this exact mod / remove that exact mod" sandbox that got repeatedly nerfed. Treat it as a probability-steering tool, not a deterministic one. The mechanic is still live in 3.29.

The 3.29 socket-colour overhaul (read this — it changed crafting)

The single biggest crafting-adjacent change this league is the socket-colour overhaul, shipped in the 3.29.0 patch notes. If you're following an older guide, this is where it's wrong. Verbatim from Grinding Gear Games' official 3.29.0 patch notes:

"Item Sockets are now always White by default."

"Gems can now be Socketed into any Equipment Socket, even if the Gem Colour does not match the Socket Colour."

"Socketed Gems now gain +10% to Quality in Red, Green, and Blue Sockets if the Gem colour matches the Socket colour."

And the consequence that matters for crafting:

"As a result of these changes, Chromatic Orbs are now rarer, and are no longer sold by vendors in towns in exchange for Jeweller's Orbs."

What this means in practice:

  • You no longer need to colour your sockets to fit your gems — any gem goes in any socket. Matching colour is now just a small +10% quality bonus.
  • Chromatic Orbs became genuinely valuable. They no longer drop freely and can't be bought from the vendor, so the old "chromatics are worthless" advice is dead. The classic vendor recipe (an item with three linked Red-Green-Blue sockets → 1 Chromatic Orb) still works — it's just far more rewarding per proc now. See our socket colours & Chromatic Orb guide for the full picture.
  • New bench crafts guarantee 2 / 3 / 4 non-white sockets for 5 / 20 / 75 Chromatic Orbs — the modern way to force coloured sockets when you actually want the quality bonus.

What about Allflame crafting and Ducats?

The 3.29 league mechanic adds its own crafting layer aboard The Sovereign. Allflame crafting takes an item and, in GGG's words, "it will split into a multitude of ghostly outcomes, one of which you can keep for yourself" — a preview-then-choose layer on top of normal crafting.

The currency that powers it is Ducats, found on the seafloor during Charts and Voyages. Important: Ducats are an Allflame-crafting currency, not a trade currency — you consume them for one-shot named effects at the Allflame tools, like the GGG line "use them to warp and twist items in ways not seen in centuries." Don't treat Ducats as "the new Chaos Orb." For the full loop, see our Allflame crafting & Ducats guide.

A practical crafting roadmap by budget

League start / broke: Alchemy or essence your bases for a guaranteed useful mod, then bench-craft the resistance or life you're missing. Pick up any linked R-G-B items for the Chromatic vendor recipe.

Mid-league / some currency: Fossil-craft bases where you want to bias a mod category, or Harvest-reforge toward a damage type. Chaos-spam cheap bases and bench-finish them.

Endgame / Divine-rich: Metacraft — lock prefixes or suffixes with the 2-Divine metamods, then Exalt-slam or reforge the open side. This is where you build the items that aren't for sale.

At every tier, the bottleneck is currency. Crafting is a currency sink by design — the more Divine and Exalted you have on hand, the more attempts you get. You can buy PoE currency to skip the farm, or if you want the finished result without the gamble, our boosting & crafting services can hand you the gear directly.

FAQ

What is the best way to start crafting in PoE as a beginner? Use essences and the Crafting Bench. Essences give you a guaranteed strong mod from a white base, and the bench lets you add the one resistance, life, or attribute roll your build is missing. Together they produce solid, build-ready rares for very little currency and zero metacrafting risk.

How many mods can a rare item have in Path of Exile? A rare item can have up to six explicit modifiers — three prefixes and three suffixes (per Maxroll's crafting documentation). A Crafting Bench mod occupies one of those slots, and metamods like "Can have up to 3 Crafted Modifiers" let you use bench crafts for extra slots.

What's the difference between a Divine Orb and an Exalted Orb for crafting? An Exalted Orb adds one new random modifier to a rare that has an open affix slot. A Divine Orb rerolls the numeric values of the mods already on the item — it never changes which mods you have. You Exalt to add, you Divine to perfect.

Did 3.29 change crafting in Path of Exile? Yes — the socket-colour overhaul made sockets white by default, let any gem fit any socket, and turned Chromatic Orbs rare and valuable. 3.29 also added two default bench reroll options and the league's own Allflame crafting (using Ducats). Core currency, essence, fossil, and Harvest crafting are otherwise unchanged.

Is metacrafting worth it? Only at the endgame. The metamods cost 2 Divine Orbs each to apply and a failed step can waste several Divines, so metacrafting is for high-value items you can't buy — not for gearing a fresh character. Start with essences, bench crafts, and fossils first.

Can you still craft with Harvest in 3.29? Yes. Harvest is live at the Sacred Grove with its three lifeforce types (Primal, Vivid, Wild) and tag-based reforge crafts. Just know it's the modern reforge-focused toolkit, not the old deterministic add/remove-mod system from 2020.

How much currency do I need to craft good gear? It scales with ambition. Essence-and-bench rares cost a handful of Chaos. Fossil and Harvest crafts cost more. Metacrafted mirror-tier items can run dozens of Divine Orbs. Always verify current exchange rates on poe.ninja — PoE prices float hard through a league.
