Quick answer: The Rite of the Nameless is Path of Exile 2's endgame Ritual pinnacle path, added in the 0.5 Runes of Aldur patch. You unlock it by farming Tribute at Ritual altars, sacrificing your leftover Tribute to earn an Audience with the King, hunting down and killing the King in the Mists for the Head of the King key, then using that key at Caer Tarth. The Rite itself is a chain of five consecutive maps run as one continuous Ritual — each map hands you a piece of the Effigy (the pinnacle key) plus Foretold Bounties that can pay out up to 5 Divine Orbs, 8 Exalted Orbs, or top-tier uniques like Astramentis and Defiance of Destiny. Complete all five and you don the Crown of the Nameless King to fight the pinnacle boss, The Bodach. Fail to finish the chain and it resets to zero.
If you've been sitting on stacks of Tribute wondering what the King in the Mists is for, or you started the Rite once and bricked it halfway, this guide is the full pipeline: every unlock step in order, how the five-map chain actually behaves, the real Foretold Bounty reward table from poe2db, the highest-value way to farm it, and the Bodach payoff at the end. Everything here is 0.5-current and fact-checked against pathofexile.com and poe2db.
GGG rebuilt Ritual from the ground up this patch. As the official 0.5.0 notes put it, you "Start fresh in a new economy with the Runes of Aldur league" — and Ritual went from forgettable filler to a full endgame questline with its own region, currency sink, and pinnacle boss. The Rite of the Nameless is the top of that ladder.

What is the Rite of the Nameless in PoE2?
The Rite of the Nameless is a continuous, five-map Ritual gauntlet that acts as the gateway to Ritual's pinnacle boss. Instead of one altar in one map, you select a chain of five connected maps on the Atlas and run a single Ritual that carries across all of them: monsters and map bosses you defeat in earlier maps come back in the later ones, stacking on top of each new map's own threats. By the final map you're clearing a Ritual with several map bosses layered together at once.
Per Path of Exile 2's Ritual documentation, the Rite is a mechanic "wherein five consecutive maps will share a single continuous Ritual, with rewards scaling when you complete each map." Every map you finish grants one element of the key — a body part of the Effigy (Tangled Torso, Mossy Arm, Frayed Cloth, and so on) — and after the first map, each subsequent map has extra modifiers bolted on that raise both the danger and the reward ceiling.
It lives inside the new Wildwood region on the western edge of your Atlas, around the hub area Caer Tarth. This is the endgame Ritual storyline: freeing the trapped spirit Aoife, unmasking the King in the Mists, and ultimately confronting The Bodach — the ancient entity whose power the King was channeling.
How do you unlock the Rite of the Nameless?
There's a specific order here, and skipping a step is why so many players get stuck. Follow it top to bottom:
- Farm Tribute at Ritual altars. Each map spawns 3–4 Ritual altars. Clear the monsters inside the runed circle, activate the altar, then kill the same (now-buffed) monsters again to earn Tribute. In 0.5, enemies you kill at one altar respawn at every later altar on that map, so your Tribute total compounds across the run.
- Spend — or don't. In the Favours window you can Buy, Defer, or Reroll rewards. Endgame Ritual rewards are now exclusively Uniques or Omens. But here's the key: unspent Tribute doesn't carry to the next map, so any leftover should be Sacrificed — which fills your Audience meter.
- Earn an Audience with the King. Once the Audience meter is full, the spirit Aoife reveals a cluster of Ritual maps that lead to the King. Keep the Audience in your inventory and look for the King of the Mist icon on the Atlas — if it isn't clickable yet, move your Atlas cursor closer to that node.
- Kill the King in the Mists. Beating him drops The Head of the King, the key item that unlocks the Rite.
- Use the key at Caer Tarth. Take the Head of the King to Caer Tarth to open the Rite of the Nameless and pick your five-map chain.
Don't waste your Tribute. Because leftover Tribute is deleted at the end of each map, the correct habit is: buy what's worth buying, defer the expensive stuff, and Sacrifice every last scrap before you leave. Every point sacrificed is progress toward the King — hoarding Tribute you'll never spend is just throwing away pinnacle access.
How does the five-map chain work?
Once you start the Rite, you choose your first map, then pick from adjacent map options to build the chain outward — five maps total, one unbroken Ritual.
- Threats carry over. Monsters and map bosses from completed maps reappear in later maps' rituals, on top of the new map's own boss. The final ritual can have multiple unique bosses active at the same time.
- Modifiers escalate. After the first map, extra modifiers are added to each subsequent map. These control both difficulty and reward quality — and Rite map options have a ~20% chance to roll an additional modifier, per poe2db.
- Your pick order matters. The reward layout differs depending on which starting point and adjacent maps you choose. Players have found you can manipulate the arrangement to line up more high-value bounties (for example, chaining toward the Divine Orb bounties instead of the filler ones).
- All five or nothing. If you don't complete the full chain, your progress resets to zero and you start the whole Rite over. Bring enough survivability and DPS to finish — this is not the place to over-reach on map tier.
Because the final fight is a wall of overlapping monsters and boss effects, builds that can hit the whole pile at once shine here. Bouncing/returning projectile skills (the "twister" archetype) are popular precisely because they ricochet off the ritual boundary like terrain and keep clearing the stacked packs.
What can you win? Foretold Bounties explained
This is the commercial heart of the Rite. Rewards come as Foretold Bounties — pre-shown drops attached to the Rite maps. Straight from poe2db's 0.5 data, the Foretold Bounty pool includes:
| Reward type | Foretold Bounty examples (poe2db, 0.5) |
|---|---|
| Divine Orbs | 1, 2, or 5 Divine Orbs |
| Exalted Orbs | 2, 4, or 8 Exalted Orbs |
| Chaos Orbs | 2, 4, or 8 Chaos Orbs |
| Greater / tiered currency | Greater Orbs of Augmentation (2/4/8), Greater Chaos (1/2/5), Greater Exalted (1/2) |
| Chase uniques | Astramentis, Defiance of Destiny, Alpha's Howl, Dream Fragments |
That's the point of grinding the Rite: it's a currency and chase-unique faucet, not just a boss-access chore. A well-arranged chain can stack multiple Divine Orb and Exalted Orb bounties into a single run, on top of the Omens and Uniques you already banked from the Tribute Favours along the way.
If you're farming the Rite specifically to convert time into Divine and Exalted Orbs, you're in the right mechanic — and if the market rate is better than your drop rate on a given day, buying the orbs outright is often faster than re-running the chain (rates below).

How to farm the Rite of the Nameless efficiently
The Rite rewards preparation more than raw map count. The levers that actually move your loot:
- Stack pack size, ignore rarity. More monsters inside the runed circles = more Tribute = more Favour buys and rerolls. Roll your maps and tablets for increased pack size with Chaos Orbs, and don't bother with item-rarity mods — Ritual reward quality doesn't scale off your magic-find gear.
- Budget your rerolls. Rerolling the Favour pool costs 1,000 Tribute per spin, and it resets your deferred items unless you re-defer them. Certain tablet affixes and Atlas nodes give you an extra free reroll — build toward those before you burn raw Tribute.
- Defer the expensive uniques. Deferring costs a small fee but discounts the item on future maps, so you can bank a big-ticket unique across several maps instead of overpaying up front.
- Path the chain toward bounties. When you pick your five maps, choose the branch that lines up the Divine/Exalted Foretold Bounties and the Effigy pieces you still need, rather than defaulting to the first option shown.
- Invest the Ritual Atlas tree. The 0.5 Ritual passive tree (fed by the Wildwood maps) buffs pack size, reward count, and reroll economy — it's the single biggest force multiplier on Rite income.

The Bodach — the pinnacle payoff
Finishing all five maps completes the Rite. You then return to Caer Tarth, transfer your name to the Effigy, don the Crown of the Nameless King, and enter the prison beneath the Wildwood to fight The Bodach — the Ritual pinnacle boss and the true source of the King in the Mists' power.
The Bodach is a proper pinnacle encounter with a phase-change sequence, and it's the reason the whole Tribute-to-Rite pipeline exists: it's Ritual's equivalent of the other pinnacle bosses, gated behind assembling the Effigy. Full mechanics, phases, and loot are in our PoE2 Bodach boss guide. There's also an optional side-boss, the Queen in the Mists, unlocked via a specific Atlas node, who drops three new corrupted Idols on death.
If you don't have the DPS to survive the stacked five-boss finale or the Bodach's phases, a boss carry is the clean way to bank the pinnacle rewards without bricking a full Rite chain.
Current currency rates (0.5 Runes of Aldur)
The Rite pays out in Divine and Exalted Orbs, so it's worth knowing what those are worth before you decide to farm versus buy. On 2026-07-19, the Exalted Orb is the 1-Exalted base unit of the economy and the Divine Orb sits well above it as the high-value trading currency. Rates move every day with the league economy — always confirm the live number on poe.ninja or poe2scout before you trade, rather than trusting a stale figure. If you're topping up for a big craft (see the PoE2 Greater & Perfect currency guide), instant delivery from timesaver.gg currency skips the trade-chat grind entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start a new Rite of the Nameless after the first one? You have to earn another Audience and kill the King in the Mists again. Sacrifice leftover Tribute from Rituals to fill the Audience meter, keep the Audience in your inventory, then look for the King of the Mist icon on the Atlas and move close enough for it to become clickable. Kill him for a fresh Head of the King, then use it at Caer Tarth.
Can the King in the Mists spawn anywhere on the Atlas? He appears within the cluster of Ritual maps that Aoife reveals once your Audience meter is full — not at a fixed spot. If his icon isn't interactable, you usually just need to path your Atlas cursor nearer to that node to activate it.
How many maps is the Rite of the Nameless? Five consecutive maps, run as one continuous Ritual. Each completed map gives you one Effigy piece toward the Bodach key. If you don't finish all five, your progress resets and you start the chain over.
What are the best rewards from the Rite? The Foretold Bounties — the pre-shown drops on each map. The top ones are 5 Divine Orbs, 8 Exalted Orbs, and chase uniques like Astramentis and Defiance of Destiny, plus the Omens and Uniques you buy with Tribute at the Favours window along the way.
Should I use rarity gear to farm the Rite? No. Ritual reward quality doesn't scale with item rarity. Prioritise increased pack size (roll it on maps and tablets with Chaos Orbs) to generate more Tribute — that's what actually increases your loot.
Do I have to beat the Bodach to keep the bounties? No. The Foretold Bounties and Tribute rewards are yours as you clear the maps. The Bodach fight is the pinnacle payoff at the end of a completed Rite — worth doing for the pinnacle loot, but the currency and uniques come from the chain itself.
