Eternatus is coming back to Pokemon GO in November 2026, and this time the plan is clearer than it was at its 2025 debut: you catch the normal Eternatus once through a free GO Pass, and you fight the giant Eternamax form for Candy. This guide covers how to get Eternatus during the Dynamax Trails event (November 16 to 23, 2026), what happens during the Eternamax Eternatus Max Battles on Saturday, November 21, how much Max Particle budget you need, the best counters, what the US$4.99 GO Pass Deluxe adds, and how to fit it all around Pawniard Community Day the same afternoon. It applies to Pokemon GO's Twilight Trails season, which ends December 1, 2026, and every date is checked against the official Dynamax Trails announcement, cross-checked with Leek Duck and Pokemon GO Hub.
Quick answer (last checked October 30, 2026, 04:45 UTC): You get Eternatus from GO Pass: Dynamax Trails, a free pass every Trainer receives on Monday, November 16, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. local. It can be caught once; if you already own one from 2025, you get 100 Eternatus Candy instead. Eternamax Eternatus takes over most Power Spots on Saturday, November 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. local, and it cannot be caught: beating it pays out a large amount of Eternatus Candy and Candy XL. During that window the Max Particle collection limit rises to 2,400 and Power Spots give 8x Max Particles; the Remote Raid limit rises from 10 to 30 from November 20, 1:00 p.m. to November 21, 6:00 p.m. PST. GO Pass Deluxe costs US$4.99, or is free if you claim Tier 1 (Rank 25) on GO Pass: Into the Wild. Claim rewards by November 25, 8:00 p.m. local.
When does Eternatus return to Pokemon GO?
Scopely announced the return on October 28, 2026. Eternatus arrives as part of Dynamax Trails, a week-long Max Battle event that runs from Monday, November 16, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. to Monday, November 23, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. local time. The big moment is a three-hour Eternamax takeover on the Saturday. The official post sets the tone in one line: "Prepare for the biggest battles of Pokémon GO as Eternamax Eternatus darkens the sky worldwide in Max Battles."
Here is the full timeline, local time unless marked PST:

That Saturday is stacked. Eternamax runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Pawniard Community Day starts the minute it ends, so plan food and battery breaks before 11:00. Our Pawniard Community Day guide covers the second half of the day.
How do you get Eternatus in Pokemon GO?
There is exactly one way to catch Eternatus during this event: GO Pass: Dynamax Trails. Trainers progress through what the announcement calls "a Max Battle adventure," earning GO Points from Pass Tasks, and the free track includes an Eternatus encounter. You do not need to pay to catch it.
The rules, in plain terms:
- New to Eternatus: you get one encounter through the free GO Pass. Eternatus "can only be caught once during this event," per the official wording.
- Already caught one in 2025: you get 100 Eternatus Candy instead of a second encounter.
- Eternamax Eternatus is not catchable. Beating it in a Max Battle rewards Candy and Candy XL, not an encounter.
- Other ways to earn Candy: the free GO Pass, the Deluxe track (more Candy and Candy XL), event Field Research (Stardust, Eternatus Candy and encounters) and the Tier 3 milestone bonus, which gives extra Candy and Candy XL from Max Battles.
Eternatus is a Poison and Dragon type Legendary. The official post warns that it "requires much more Candy and Candy XL to power up due to its massive power." Expect to spend the whole week farming Candy, and do not plan to max it from a single weekend.
What did Eternatus look like in 2025?
Eternamax Eternatus debuted at Pokemon GO Fest 2025: Max Finale, a global event on August 23 and 24, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time (pokemon.com). Then, as now, the regular Eternatus came from a GO Pass encounter (GO Pass: Max Finale), and the Eternamax fights paid out Candy. The 2026 Eternamax window is much shorter: 3 hours on one day, against a two-day event in 2025. If you missed 2025, the November 21 window is your Candy farm, so clear your schedule for it.
What is the Eternamax Eternatus Max Battle?
Eternamax Eternatus is the biggest Max Battle boss in Pokemon GO. Pokemon GO Hub's counters guide lists it as a Tier 6 Max Battle that costs 800 Max Particles, and the particles are only spent if your group wins. Gigantamax-scale battles can hold up to 100 Trainers, split into groups of four or fewer, a limit raised from 40 at GO Fest 2025: Max Finale, the same event that debuted Eternamax (official post).
How hard is it? In 2025, Hub wrote: "Beating Eternatus Eternamax in 1-2 max phases requires around 100 people." Treat it as a community fight. Join a crowded Power Spot or a local Discord group rather than trying it with a lobby of four.
The bonuses during the Saturday window, all from the official post:
| Bonus (Nov 21) | Normal value | During Eternamax |
|---|---|---|
| Max Particle collection limit | 800 per day | 2,400 |
| Max Particles from Power Spots | 1x | 8x |
| Power Spot refresh | normal | more frequent |
| Daily Remote Raid limit | 10 | 30 (Nov 20, 1:00 p.m. to Nov 21, 6:00 p.m. PST) |
How many Max Particles do you need?
Plan around 800 per win. With the limit at 2,400 that day, Power Spot visits alone can fund 3 wins, on top of whatever you already hold. Max Particle storage outside events is 1,500 (official Help Center), so a full bag covers one win before you collect a single particle, with 700 left toward the next. With 8x particles from Power Spots, a few spot visits early in the window refill you quickly.
Two traps. First, particles from catches with an Auto Catcher device do not count: "Max Particles cannot be obtained from catches with the Explorer Gadget or a Pokémon GO Plus +." Second, do not drain your bag during Into the Wild or the Wild Area weekend (November 9 to 15) if you want to arrive on Saturday ready to battle.
What are the best counters for Eternamax Eternatus?
Eternatus is Poison and Dragon, so it is weak to Ground, Ice, Psychic and Dragon attacks. In Max Battles a normal Max Attack takes the type of your Fast Attack (signature moves such as G-Max attacks and Eternatus's own work differently), so check that your attacker has a Ground, Psychic or Dragon Fast Attack before you lock in.
Pokemon GO Hub's 2025 counters guide gives this lineup. It is based on the 2025 roster; check the Hub database counters page before November 21 for newer Dynamax Pokemon.
| Role | Hub picks | Fast Attack to use |
|---|---|---|
| Attacker | Eternatus | Dragon Tail |
| Attacker | Dynamax Latios | Dragon Breath or Zen Headbutt |
| Attacker | Dynamax Metagross | Zen Headbutt |
| Attacker | Dynamax Excadrill | Mud Slap or Mud Shot |
| Attacker | Dynamax Hatterene | Confusion or Psycho Cut |
| Attacker | Dynamax Latias | Dragon Breath or Zen Headbutt |
| Defender | Crowned Shield Zamazenta, Crowned Sword Zacian | Metal Claw |
| Defender | Dynamax Metagross, Omastar, Corviknight, Blastoise | various |
| Healer | Dynamax Blissey, Wailord, Gigantamax Snorlax, Gigantamax Lapras | any |
Hub lists the boss's movepool as Dragon Tail and Poison Jab (Fast) and Cross Poison, Dragon Pulse, Flamethrower and Hyper Beam (charged); in a fight it uses two of those charged attacks, not its Fast Attacks. Steel types resist both Poison and Dragon, which is why Zamazenta and Zacian top the defender list. Hub's advice from the 2025 fights still holds: "Your best Eternatus counter is Eternatus!" That is a reason to power up your GO Pass Eternatus during the week before Saturday.
Should you spend Candy on levels or on Max Moves?
It is one of the most argued questions in the r/TheSilphRoad threads about the return, including the announcement thread and a time-window clarification thread. The community answer for Max Battles, in one commenter's words in the time-window thread: "you're better off getting Eternatus to level 30/40 and getting max attack to level 3 than getting it to Level 50 and keeping max attack at level 1." If you mostly use Eternatus in raids, Gyms or Team GO Rocket fights instead, raw levels matter more. Either way, the Candy XL bill is steep, so decide your target before you start spending.
How should a group play the fight?
- Spam Fast Attacks. Hub's Gigantamax guidance applies to Eternamax: charged attacks generate the same minimum Max Energy as a Fast Attack but take longer, so tap, do not charge.
- Bring one tank with Max Guard leveled. A shielded Pokemon draws the boss's targeted attack away from the rest of your group.
- Dodge the single-target attack. It deals double damage but can be dodged when the warning appears.
- Use Dynamax Cannon. If you own Eternatus, its Dynamax Cannon Adventure Effect lets you "temporarily boost their Pokémon's Max Moves by one level in Max Battles for 10 minutes" for 5,000 Stardust and 30 Eternatus Candy (official post, mirrored by Leek Duck). Reaching GO Pass Tier 2 (Rank 35) halves that Candy and Stardust cost during the event.
For the general Max Battle rules (Private Groups, entry costs by tier, Max Move levels), see our Pokemon GO Max Battles guide.
What does GO Pass: Dynamax Trails give you?
GO Pass is a free progression track. You collect GO Points from Pass Tasks and climb ranks for rewards. Everyone gets the free track on November 16 at 10:00 a.m. local; GO Points stop at 8:00 p.m. on November 23, and you must claim rewards by November 25 at 8:00 p.m. local.
| Track | Key rewards (official and Leek Duck) |
|---|---|
| Free GO Pass | Eternatus encounter (or 100 Candy), Eternatus Candy and Candy XL, Dynamax encounters with a Special Background, Rare Candy, Stardust, stickers |
| GO Pass Deluxe (US$4.99) | Everything above plus more Dynamax encounters, more Eternatus Candy and Candy XL, Silver Pinap Berries, Rare Candy XL, stickers |
| Web Store Deluxe bonus | 10 Ultra Balls, 5 Max Revives, 1 Premium Battle Pass, 5 Max Potions |
The major milestone bonuses, per Leek Duck's mirror of the official post:
| Milestone | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Tier 1, Rank 15 | 2x Catch Stardust |
| Tier 2, Rank 35 | Half Candy and Stardust cost for the Dynamax Cannon Adventure Effect |
| Tier 3, Rank 55 | More Candy and Candy XL from Max Battles |
Rank 55 matters most for Eternatus. If you hit it before Saturday, every Eternamax win pays more Candy. Play the GO Pass hard from Monday to Friday so the Tier 3 bonus is active by 11:00 a.m. on November 21.
Is GO Pass Deluxe: Dynamax Trails worth it?
Check first whether you already have it for free. Trainers who claim Tier 1 rewards (Rank 25) on GO Pass: Into the Wild (November 9 to 13) get a free upgrade to GO Pass Deluxe: Dynamax Trails and early access on November 14. That is worth planning around: hitting Rank 25 on a free pass saves US$4.99 and gives you two extra days of progress before everyone else starts.
If you miss that, the US$4.99 Deluxe is worth it for players who want to power up Eternatus, because the extra Candy and Candy XL is exactly what the Pokemon needs. If you just want the catch for your Pokedex, the free pass already has the encounter.
What else is in the Dynamax Trails event?
Beyond Eternatus, Dynamax Trails is a full week of Max Battles (official post):
- Every non-Legendary Dynamax Pokemon that has appeared in Pokemon GO may show up in Max Battles. Legendary and Mythical Pokemon are excluded.
- Special Background chance on Pokemon caught from Max Battles during the event.
- More Power Spots than usual, and a chance at Max Particles from catching event-themed wild Pokemon or finishing Max Battles.
- Wild spawns include any Pokemon that has debuted in Dynamax Max Battles (non-Legendary).
- Event stickers from PokeStops, Gifts, the shop and the GO Pass.
- Spotlight Hour, Thursday November 19, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.: Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble with 2x Catch Candy (Leek Duck, Pokemon GO Hub).
If you want a full read on November around this event, our GO Wild Area 2026 guide covers the November 14 and 15 weekend just before it, and our weekly Pokemon GO events this week page tracks raids and Spotlight Hours as they are confirmed.
