Applies to Valheim 1.0, patch 1.0.21 (released on Steam October 28, 2026; Iron Gate said other platforms follow within a few days). Hen, egg and breeding values come from the community Valheim Wiki, which documents the game's own timers (Egg, Taming & breeding, Haldor). Patch notes are from Iron Gate's official 1.0.21 post. Updated October 30, 2026.

Chickens are the cheapest renewable food source in Valheim, and the most confusing one to start. You can't find a wild hen anywhere in the world. Every hen in every save started life as an egg that someone kept warm. Get two hens fed and next to each other and they will lay eggs on their own. Get those eggs near a fire and under a roof and they hatch. Miss either condition and you'll stare at "Egg (Too cold)" for an hour.

This guide covers the whole loop: where your first eggs come from, what hens eat, how to hatch eggs, the population cap that quietly stops your farm, and the best recipes for eggs and chicken meat.

Quick answer: Valheim chickens in 60 seconds

  • There are no wild chickens. Your first eggs come from Haldor for 1,500 Coins after you kill Yagluth, or from chests on the bottom floor of a Plains Sealed Tower.
  • You need two eggs to start a farm. Hatch both and you get two hens.
  • Hatching: drop the egg on the ground, one per spot (not in a stack), near a heat source and under a roof. It hatches in 30 minutes.
  • Growing: a chick becomes a hen after 50 minutes. Egg to adult takes about 80 minutes.
  • Hens eat: Dandelion, Barley, and Carrot, Turnip, Onion, Beech and Birch seeds. Not Barley Flour. Not Vineberry or Kale seeds either.
  • Population cap: 10 hens, chicks and eggs combined within 10 m. Hens stop laying at the cap. Eggs you move away don't count.
  • Kill hens with a Butcher Knife (2 Wood + 4 Tin at the Forge). A hen drops Chicken Meat every time; a chicken (the chick stage) only 25% of the time.

How do you get your first chicken eggs in Valheim?

You have exactly two options, and both are tied to Plains progression.

SourceWhat you getRequirementBest for
Haldor the trader1 Egg per 1,500 CoinsYagluth defeatedGuaranteed, any time after the Plains boss
Sealed Tower chestsSometimes 2 EggsClear the Plains tower down to its bottom floorStarting a farm before Yagluth

Haldor, the Black Forest trader, is the reliable route. The wiki's trader table lists the Egg at 1,500 Coins, unlocked after defeating Yagluth. Two eggs cost 3,000 Coins. That sounds steep, but you only ever buy them once. After that the farm feeds itself. If you haven't killed the Plains boss yet, our Yagluth guide covers the totems, attacks and prep.

Sealed Towers are the early route. Each world has three of them in the Plains, and Hildir's map reveals their locations. The tower's top four floors are packed with Fulings, Shamans and traps hidden under straw. The bottom floor holds the minibosses Zil and Thungr plus two or three special chests, and those chests can contain eggs. "Can" is the key word. It's loot, not a guarantee, so treat a tower run as a bonus and Haldor as the plan.

The game itself is a bit cheeky about it. The Egg's in-game description reads: "Keep it warm to see what comes out.. but what came first, really?" In Valheim the answer is the egg, every time.

How do you hatch eggs in Valheim?

Hatching is where most players get stuck. Hover over an egg on the ground and it tells you if it's "Too cold." The wiki's Egg page lists every condition:

  • Drop it from your inventory onto the ground. An egg in a chest or in your pack never hatches.
  • One egg per spot. A dropped stack of 5 eggs is one object and won't hatch. Drop them one at a time.
  • Near a fire or heat source. A campfire, hearth or brazier works. The hover text switches from "Too cold" once it's warm.
  • Under a roof. The egg needs shelter, same as a fire does.
  • Wait 30 minutes. Then a chick pops out.

Two traps catch people:

  • The hover text lags. The wiki notes it can take 5 to 10 seconds to update after you move an egg. Don't keep nudging it. Drop it, wait 10 seconds, then read the text.
  • Too close to the fire kills the chick. An egg dropped right next to the flames hatches a chick straight into the fire, and it dies instantly. Chicks also wander, so spacing alone isn't enough. Use a heat source they can't walk into: a hanging brazier (like the coop pictured at the top of this guide), a fire behind a low wall, or a hearth with a fenced edge.

There's no cap on hatching. The population limit only applies to laying (more on that below), so you can line up as many warm eggs as you want in a heated room and hatch them all at once.

How long does it take for a chicken to grow in Valheim?

From the wiki's breeding table:

StageTimeNotes
Egg → Chick30 minutesMust stay warm and sheltered the whole time
Chick → Hen50 minutesGrows while you sleep or are away
Egg → adult Hen~80 minutesReal-time minutes, not in-game days

In-game the baby is called a Chicken and the adult a Hen. Chickens are tame from birth, so you don't need to tame anything. You can't rename one until it grows into a hen, though. The 50-minute grow timer keeps running while you sleep or leave the area, which makes overnight growing free. Taming and earning new love points are the opposite: both pause when you leave.

What do hens eat in Valheim?

Hens only lay eggs when they are fed. The wiki's Hen page lists every accepted food:

FoodWhere you get itNotes
DandelionPicked from the ground in the MeadowsRespawns after 240 minutes
Carrot SeedsPicked in the Black ForestBetter planted than fed
Turnip SeedsTurnip flowers in the SwampRare, better planted than fed
Onion SeedsMountain Towers and Abandoned CabinsRare, better planted than fed
Beech SeedsChopping Beech treesStacks to 100, the cheapest feed
Birch SeedsChopping Birch treesStacks to 100
BarleyPlains farmingRaw Barley only

What hens won't eat matters just as much:

  • Barley Flour. The wiki calls this out by name. Only raw Barley counts.
  • Vineberry and Kale seeds. A recent r/valheim PSA put it bluntly: "Chickens will not eat Vinberry or Kale seeds." Neither is on the wiki's food list, so don't waste your Ashlands and Deep North seeds in the coop.

The most practical option for most bases is Beech Seeds. Every Beech you chop can drop some, they stack to 100, you can't eat them yourself, and hens eat one at a time. Drop a full stack in the coop and walk away.

Hens eat from a 1 m range, the same as boars. The food has to be practically under their beak. A fed animal stays full for 10 minutes and looks for food every 10 seconds within 10 m. So keep the floor clear and drop the seeds in the middle of the pen, not on the other side of a fence post.

If you're also planting the seeds you feed them, our Valheim farming guide covers every crop and where to grow it.

How does chicken breeding work in Valheim?

Hens breed the same way every other tame animal does, except the "baby" is an egg. Every 30 seconds, each hen gets a 33% roll to gain a love point. It only counts if all of these are true:

  • The hen is not hungry.
  • The hen is not alerted (no red exclamation mark).
  • Another fed, tame hen that isn't already pregnant is within 4 m.
  • The total count is under the cap.
  • The area is active: someone stands within about 64 m.

A hen needs 3 love points to get "pregnant." One minute later it lays an egg right where it stands, shown by a small red cloud. Pink hearts mean a love point landed.

Run the wiki's numbers and a well-fed pair should produce an egg roughly every 5 to 6 minutes per hen at best. That's our estimate from the 33%-per-30-seconds roll plus the one-minute delay, not an official figure. It ignores the time a partner spends pregnant (and so unavailable), so real rates are lower, and lower still if the hens wander off their food or a Greydwarf spooks them.

Why are my Valheim chickens not breeding?

This is the most common chicken-farm complaint, and the population cap is the usual cause.

The cap is 10 within 10 meters. The game counts hens + chicks + eggs together. Ten eggs lying on the floor of the coop count against the limit just like ten hens do. Your hens will stop laying until you clear space.

Work down this checklist:

  • Count everything within 10 m, eggs included. Pick up the eggs. That alone fixes most "my chickens stopped laying" posts.
  • Check the food. Is it raw Barley, a Dandelion or a seed on the list? Is it within 1 m reach of a hen?
  • Check the partner range. Two hens 6 m apart won't breed. They need to be within 4 m of each other, and the partner can't already be pregnant.
  • Check for fear. Monsters near the coop alert hens and pause everything.
  • Stay nearby. If no one is within about 64 m, the zone unloads and breeding stops.
  • Don't sleep it off. Sleeping burns the food timer without speeding up breeding. A hen that's already pregnant still lays while you're away, but no new love points are earned until you're back.

The cap has one useful side effect: already-pregnant hens still lay. So a coop can briefly creep over 10. Don't count on it, and don't mistake the overshoot for a bug.

How do you build a chicken coop in Valheim?

Build around the rules above and the farm runs on autopilot. The design that works for most players:

  • Two rooms. A laying room for 2 to 4 adult hens, and a separate hatching room with a fire, at least 10 m away. Eggs move to the hatching room, so they don't count against the laying room's cap.
  • A roof over both. Eggs need shelter to hatch, and a roof keeps rain off your fire.
  • A fire in the hatching room only. Place eggs in a ring around it, a step out from the flames. A campfire or hearth both work.
  • A chest by the door. Keep a stack of Beech Seeds or Barley there for refills.
  • Solid walls. Raids and roaming monsters scare hens. Our Valheim building guide has the structural and raid-proofing basics.

Keep just 2 to 4 breeders. More hens near each other means more of the 10-slot cap is used by adults, and fewer slots stay free for new eggs.

What can you make with eggs and chicken meat?

Eggs go into four dishes, and chicken meat into two. The stats below come from the wiki's Egg, Chicken Meat, Frosted Sweetbread, Honey Glazed Chicken, Mushroom Omelette and Pancakes pages. Health, Stamina and duration are per serving.

FoodRecipeStationHealthStaminaDuration
Cooked Egg1 EggCauldron (base level)351220 min
Cooked Chicken Meat1 Chicken MeatCooking Station602020 min
Frosted Sweetbread (makes 2)2 Cloudberries, 1 Egg, 1 Barley Flour, 1 Honey → bake 50 sFood Preparation Table + Stone Oven434330 min
Honey Glazed Chicken1 Chicken Meat, 3 Honey, 2 Jotun Puffs → bake 50 sFood Preparation Table + Stone Oven802630 min
Mushroom Omelette3 Eggs, 3 Jotun PuffsCauldron level 5288525 min
Pancakes (makes 3)1 Oat Milk, 2 Oat Flour, 2 Eggs, 2 BlueberriesCauldron level 63911530 min

Three picks stand out:

  • Honey Glazed Chicken is the health dish. 80 Health for 30 minutes from one piece of meat is excellent in the Mistlands. Pull it out of the Stone Oven before 100 seconds or it turns to Coal.
  • Mushroom Omelette is the stamina dish for the Mistlands. It costs 3 eggs per serving, which is why you want a running farm, not a single pair.
  • Pancakes tie Oatmeal for the highest Stamina in the game at 115. This is the Deep North recipe that turns a chicken farm from "nice" into "needed."

How do you kill chickens for meat in Valheim?

Tame animals can't be hit by normal weapons. You have two options:

  • Butcher Knife. Crafted at the Forge from 2 Wood + 4 Tin. It only damages tame creatures, and it one-shots a hen. This is the clean method.
  • Friendly fire / PvP on. Works, but risky in a coop full of breeders.

What drops:

CreatureChicken MeatFeathers
Chicken (chick)25% chanceYes
Hen1, guaranteedYes

The table makes the rule simple: never butcher chicks. Wait the 50 minutes for them to grow and you get guaranteed meat instead of a one-in-four roll. As a bonus, Feathers from hens save you from hunting birds for arrows.

Did patch 1.0.21 change chickens?

No. The 1.0.21 patch notes from October 28, 2026 don't touch hens, eggs or breeding. That patch moved three Stone Oven preparations (Unbaked Poteitr, Raw Kale Chips and Oven Pancake Batter) from the Cauldron to the Food Preparation Table. Oven Pancakes are a different food from the egg Pancakes above, which are still made in a level 6 Cauldron. Everything in this guide applies to 1.0.21. We'll update it if a later patch changes the hen rules.

FAQ

Where do you find chickens in Valheim? You don't. There are no wild chickens or hens in any biome. Every hen hatches from an egg, and your first eggs come from Haldor (1,500 Coins after killing Yagluth) or from chests on the bottom floor of a Plains Sealed Tower.

Why does my egg say "Too cold"? It isn't close enough to a fire or heat source, or it isn't under a roof. Move it nearer to the fire (but not into it), make sure it's sheltered, and wait 5 to 10 seconds for the hover text to update. Also check that you dropped one egg, not a stack.

How many eggs do you need to start a chicken farm? Two. Hatch both and you have a breeding pair. After that the hens lay all the eggs you need, so you never have to buy another one from Haldor.

Why did my chickens stop laying eggs? Most often you've hit the cap: 10 hens, chicks and eggs within 10 m. Eggs on the floor count. Pick them up or move them to a separate hatching room, and laying starts again. If that isn't it, check the food (raw Barley or seeds, within 1 m) and that the hens are within 4 m of each other.

Do chickens grow while you sleep in Valheim? Yes. Chicks keep growing while you sleep or are away. Earning love points is the opposite: it only happens while someone is nearby, and sleeping burns the hens' food without speeding anything up.

Can you take eggs through a portal? Yes. The Egg's item data marks it as teleportable, so you can carry eggs from Haldor or a Sealed Tower home through a normal portal.
