Iron Gate shipped Valheim patch 1.0.21 on October 28, 2026, and it is one of the largest post-launch patches so far. It contains nearly 40 fixes and tweaks: three Deep North foods move to a different crafting station, the final boss gets two quality-of-life nerfs, Deep North trees now drop a plantable cone, and five achievements stop depending on your world difficulty.
This page is our running Valheim patch notes hub. It covers the newest patch in detail, explains what each change means for your world, and keeps a dated history of every 1.0 patch underneath. Everything below comes from Iron Gate's official Patch 1.0.21 notes and the Steam announcement for app 892970. Recipe details are cross-checked against the Valheim Wiki, which has already been updated for 1.0.21.
Quick answer: The latest Valheim update is patch 1.0.21, released October 28, 2026. It rolls out to Steam first and reaches other platforms over "a few days"; crossplay keeps working during the rollout. The headline changes: Unbaked Poteitr, Raw Kale Chips and Oven Pancake Batter are now made at the Food Preparation Table, not the Cauldron (you still bake them in a Stone Oven). Kall Fimbulbringer's Yagluth Aspect ground-fire damage over time is halved, and his drops no longer fall through the floor. Timberwood Cones now drop from Deep North trees. Snow and ash storms no longer blow inside your house. Five achievements are no longer tied to your difficulty setting. The Nord Greatsword no longer loses damage when it hits several enemies.
When did Valheim patch 1.0.21 come out?
Patch 1.0.21 was published on October 28, 2026, 13 days after patch 1.0.20 (October 15). Iron Gate opened the notes with this:
"A long list of tweaks and bug fixes incoming today! It touches on a little bit of everything, and we hope this patch will serve to give you all a smoother experience adventuring in Valheim." (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.21 notes)
As with 1.0.16 and 1.0.17, the studio staggered the release: "Due to some internal restrictions, the patch will require a few days to get uploaded to all platforms. Despite this, however, crossplay will still remain functional." In practice, Steam players get 1.0.21 first. Xbox, PlayStation 5, Switch 2 and the Mac App Store follow, and mixed-platform groups can keep playing together while that happens.
The patch is a network-compatible update. Iron Gate says one fix, the Frost Foundry crafting achievement, "requires network incompatible update and is coming soon™". That tells you a larger patch is planned that will force all servers and clients to update together.
What changed with food in Valheim 1.0.21?
This is the change most players will notice, because it breaks a habit. Before 1.0.21, three Deep North dishes started at the Cauldron. They now start at the Food Preparation Table:
| Food (baked) | Uncooked step, now at Food Preparation Table | Ingredients | Stats after baking (HP / Stamina / Eitr) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baked Poteitr | Unbaked Poteitr | 1 Seal Blubber, 2 Kale, 1 Poteitr, 2 Oat Flour | 34 / 17 / 100 |
| Kale Chips | Raw Kale Chips (makes 4) | 12 Kale | 35 / 105 / 0 |
| Oven Pancake | Oven Pancake Batter | 1 Moose Meat, 2 Poteitr, 2 Lingonberries, 2 Oat Flour | 37 / 18 / 105 |
Recipes and stats: Valheim Wiki item pages, updated for 1.0.21.
Only the first step moved. You still finish all three in a Stone Oven: 50 seconds to bake, and anything left in for 100 seconds burns into Coal. Iron Gate also fixed the tooltips on the uncooked versions, which were showing the wrong text.
Why the move makes sense: the other oven dishes, from Bread Dough to Uncooked Piquant Pie, already start at the Food Preparation Table. These three were the odd ones out. If your Deep North kitchen was set up around the Cauldron, put a Food Preparation Table (5 Iron, 20 Finewood, 15 Leather Scraps) next to your ovens.
A Reddit thread titled "Ovens no longer work?" appeared within hours of the patch. Replies pointed to a familiar cause rather than a bug: "Smoke coming out the front means your food burned." If your oven looks broken after 1.0.21, take the Coal out, check that it has wood, and re-bake. For the full Deep North meal plan, see our Valheim best food tier list.
Do storms still blow inside your house in Valheim?
Not anymore. Patch 1.0.21: "Snow storms in Deep North / Mountains and Ash storms in Ashlands no longer blow inside of your house." Before this, snow and ash particles showed up inside closed buildings in three biomes. That looked broken and hid the point of building a proper roof.
Building fixes in the same patch:
- Snow walls in Deep North locations, such as Abandoned Villages, are easier to destroy.
- Some previously indestructible props in some locations are now destructible.
- Iron torches, sconces and braziers play their fire sound effects more quietly.
- The Hood of the Vanguard can now go on an item stand.
Our Valheim building guide covers comfort and support for a Deep North base.
How was Kall Fimbulbringer changed in patch 1.0.21?
The final boss got two fixes and one balance change:
- "Decrease Kall Fimbulbringer's Yagluth Aspect's Fire Nova DOT by half (ground fire)." In phase 2, Kall hides in an ice block and summons aspects of the seven earlier bosses. The Aspect of the Twisted Soul (Yagluth, 1,700 HP) has a nova that leaves burning ground. That lingering fire now does half as much damage over time. The patch note only mentions the burn, not the nova's initial hit.
- Less screen shake on some of his attacks.
- "Fixed issue where Kall Fimbulbringer's drops could fall through the floor." This is the important one. Kall drops the Sacrificial Blood you need to finish the story at the Sacrificial Stones, plus the Crown Jewel. Losing them under the arena floor was a run-ending bug.
The fight is still 47,000 HP across three phases (10,000 + 7,000 + 30,000), according to the wiki. He resists Pierce, Fire, Frost and Lightning, is immune to Spirit and can't be staggered, so Blunt and Slash weapons are still the right choice. Our Kall Fimbulbringer guide covers the full fight.
What combat and creature changes are in Valheim 1.0.21?
- Nord Greatsword (and its variants) "no longer deal less damage per enemy when hitting several enemies in one hit." Before the fix, wide swings into a group spread the damage thinner than intended. Now every enemy hit takes full damage, which makes it a stronger crowd-control weapon in Mörkhalla and on Jotun invasions.
- Gammeltroll Punch attacks can no longer destroy other petrified Gammeltrolls. This matters for Bloodgold. A petrified Gammeltroll is where your Petrified Tissue comes from, and a second, living troll could previously smash that statue before you harvested it.
- Moose: colliders now match the body more closely and attack ranges are somewhat shorter. Moose should no longer hit you from further away than they appear to reach.
- Frozen Skeletons and Greydwarves no longer disappear at long draw distance (they "LOD out of existence super early" before).
- Wolf spirits can no longer reproduce.
- The "No Skill Drain" effect can no longer re-apply itself after its timer ends.
- A fix for being launched at high speed when jumping on top of some enemies.
What else changed for gear and trinkets?
- Two trinkets at once is fixed. Dropping trinkets from item stands could let you equip two at the same time. Trinkets are designed as one per slot; see our Valheim trinkets tier list for which one to run.
- Headdress of the Caller (the Deep North mage helmet) no longer needs Moose Trophies to upgrade. The wiki now lists 1 Moose Sinew + 2 Nornathread for the first upgrade, then 2 + 4, then 4 + 8.
- Frost Foundry now records the correct crafter when another player owns the station on the network. Crafting-achievement progress still goes to the network owner until the network-incompatible update arrives.
- Items no longer drop out of your inventory when you release the mouse in the wrong spot.
Players have also reported items going missing around the Frost Foundry after 1.0.21. One reply mentioned "items falling through the world with the latest patch when deconstructing things." This is unconfirmed: Iron Gate has not acknowledged it, and the patch notes only mention crafter attribution. Until there is a fix, keep Bloodgold and moulds in a chest rather than leaving them in or near the Foundry, and back up your world.
What are Timberwood Cones in Valheim?
They are new in 1.0.21: "Trees in Deep North now drop Timberwood cones, plant them in more hospitable biomes for a humongous tree (that also drops more Timberwood)."
What the wiki lists for the new item:
- Source: felled Deep North Timber Trees. Iron Gate also "tweaked Timberwood drop rates, now drop fewer pinecones and more Timberwood."
- Plant with: the Cultivator.
- Valid biomes: Meadows, Black Forest, Mountain and Plains. You can't plant it in the Deep North itself.
- Grow time: 3,000–5,000 seconds, with 2 m of clear space around the sapling.
This makes the Deep North's building wood renewable. Timberwood is needed for Timber and Scalewood structures, the Smith's Aprons (8) and the Smoker (6). You can now grow a Timberwood forest next to your main base instead of sailing north for every log.
Which Valheim achievements were fixed in 1.0.21?
Five achievements were "incorrectly tied to the current difficulty level": Mighty Halls, Comfort is King, The Homesteader, The Architect and The Survivor. If you played on a custom or lower difficulty and these didn't unlock, they can now be earned normally.
One change makes an achievement harder: The Trophy Collector now also requires a Troll Trophy. Patch 1.0.20 raised trophy drop chances for starred monsters, so farm a 1★ or 2★ Troll if you're missing it. Gamepad players can now filter Boss and Death markers on the map, too. Full requirements are in our Valheim achievements guide.
What are the platform-specific fixes in 1.0.21?
| Platform | Fix |
|---|---|
| Steam | Save caching no longer goes out of sync when a world file is changed outside the game |
| Xbox | Characters and worlds with invalid names (e.g. "i<3") are cleaned up, fixing a menu UI that vanished on "Start Game" |
| PlayStation 5 | An info popup now appears if you try to join a crossplay server with the "PS5 only" toggle on |
| Switch 2 | The Achievement details panel can now be scrolled by touch |
All platforms also get fixes for rare crashes (mostly in multiplayer), ocean graphical seams, the vendor screen not opening after a cinematic, and world and character name fields that no longer accept symbols such as angle brackets or the pipe character.

FAQ
What is the latest Valheim patch? Patch 1.0.21, released October 28, 2026. It reaches Steam first and the other platforms over a few days, and crossplay keeps working during the rollout.
Where do you make Kale Chips in Valheim now? At the Food Preparation Table (12 Kale makes 4 Raw Kale Chips), then bake them in a Stone Oven for 50 seconds. Since 1.0.21 they no longer start at the Cauldron. The same goes for Unbaked Poteitr and Oven Pancake Batter.
Do I need a new world for patch 1.0.21? No. It is a normal network-compatible patch and works on existing worlds. Back up your world file before any update anyway, especially with unconfirmed reports of items going missing near the Frost Foundry.
Was Kall Fimbulbringer nerfed? Slightly. The ground fire left by his Yagluth Aspect's nova now does half the damage over time, and some attacks shake the screen less. His health (47,000 across three phases) and resistances are unchanged.
What are Timberwood Cones used for? Plant them with a Cultivator in the Meadows, Black Forest, Mountain or Plains to grow a large Timber Tree, which gives you a renewable Timberwood supply away from the Deep North.
Why didn't my achievement unlock in Valheim? Before 1.0.21, Mighty Halls, Comfort is King, The Homesteader, The Architect and The Survivor were wrongly tied to your difficulty level. Update to 1.0.21 and meet the requirement again. Remember that using cheat commands can lock achievements on that character and world.
The bottom line
Patch 1.0.21 is mostly fixes, but three changes affect how you play right away. Move your Deep North oven prep to a Food Preparation Table. Start planting Timberwood Cones at home. And fight Kall knowing his drops won't vanish through the floor. If you're on console and don't have the update yet, keep playing: crossplay still works until it arrives. We'll update this page with every new Valheim patch.
