How to Beat Yagluth in Valheim: Totems, Attacks & Plains Prep (1.0.20)

Yagluth is the fifth Forsaken and the boss of the Plains, and he is the fight where Valheim stops forgiving bad preparation. He has 10,000 health, he is immune to stagger, and every one of his three attacks carries heavy Fire damage, so armor helps but fire resistance does the heavy lifting. Bring the right mead and the right weapon and the fight becomes a manageable pattern. Walk in without them and his meteors can finish you before the Deathsquitos do.

This guide applies to the live build, Valheim 1.0.20 (released 2026-10-15). It covers his exact attack numbers, where to find the five Fuling totems, the gear and consumables worth crafting first, and the Plains prep that makes the fight routine.

Quick answer: To beat Yagluth in Valheim, collect 5 Fuling totems (Fuling Villages, Fuling Outposts and Fuling Berserkers) and place them on his Forsaken Altar in the Plains. Drink Fire Resistance Barley Wine before the fight, since all three of his attacks deal heavy Fire damage. Use Frost arrows or a Spirit/Slash weapon (Frostner, Silver Sword, Black Metal Sword), because he resists Fire, is very resistant to Pierce and is immune to Poison and Stagger. Stay in melee to stop his fire beam, roll through the blue-fist Nova, and use the stone fingers around the altar as cover from meteors. He drops his trophy and 3 Torn Spirits for the Wisp Fountain.

What do you need before fighting Yagluth?

Yagluth sits at the end of the Plains, and the Plains sits behind Moder. Her Dragon Tears build the Artisan Table, which unlocks the Blast Furnace and the Spinning Wheel. Those two stations are how you turn Plains loot into Black Metal weapons and Padded armor. Our Valheim Mountain guide covers that fight, and the full Valheim boss order shows where Yagluth fits in the ladder.

Before you summon him, have these sorted:

  • A Fire Resistance Barley Wine stack. The Valheim Wiki's boss strategy page puts it plainly: "The fight is balanced around the expectation that players will use Fire Resistance Barley Wine which reduces fire damage by 50%."
  • A weapon that isn't Pierce or Fire. More on this below. Your Black Metal Atgeir is the wrong tool here.
  • Your best food. Plains-tier Lox Meat Pie, Fish Wraps and Blood Pudding all work. See our Valheim food tier list for the current best combos.
  • A portal close to the altar. Dying here means running back naked across a biome full of things that one-shot you.

What are Yagluth's stats, weaknesses and resistances?

These are the base values from the Valheim Wiki's Yagluth page for 1.0.20.

StatValue
Health10,000
Summon5 × Fuling totem at his Forsaken Altar (Plains)
ResistantFire
Very resistantPierce
ImmunePoison, Stagger
Neutral (full damage)Slash, Blunt, Frost, Spirit, Lightning
DropsYagluth trophy + 3 Torn Spirit

So what is Yagluth weak to? Technically nothing. He has no weakness entry at all. In practice, the best damage comes from what he doesn't resist:

  • Frost arrows (26 Pierce + 52 Frost each) are the wiki's recommended arrow. Two-thirds of their damage is Frost, which he takes in full.
  • Spirit damage. The Silver Sword and Frostner both carry Spirit damage, so your Mountain weapons are still good picks here.
  • Raw Slash or Blunt. The Black Metal Sword (95 Slash at level 1, 113 at level 4) is the strongest straightforward melee option you can craft from the Plains.

Don't bother with: fire arrows, poison arrows, the Black Metal Atgeir (Pierce) or standard pierce arrows. Some guides suggest making him Wet to set up Frost bonuses. It doesn't work: Yagluth's aura forces darkness and removes rain, and he only gets Wet if fully submerged.

What attacks does Yagluth use?

Yagluth only has three moves. Each one has its own cooldown and range, and once you know them the fight becomes a pattern. Damage below is the wiki's listed base damage per hit, before your resistances and armor apply.

AttackTellCooldownRangeDamage (per hit)
Beam (fire breath)Roars, then breathes a straight line15 s10–40 m(40 Fire + 20 Lightning) × 20 projectiles
MeteorsRaises his left fist, glowing red25 swithin 30 m(40 Blunt + 120 Fire) × 10 stones, 5 m radius each
NovaRaises his right fist, glowing blue, slams20 swithin 10 m65 Fire + 65 Lightning, 10 m radius, then 100 Fire lingering

Beam. He only uses it when you are 10–40 m away, and it has zero spread, so if he is breathing on you, sidestep rather than backpedal. It is 20 separate projectiles, which is why blocking it with a shield drains your stamina so fast. The real fix is to get inside 10 m, where he can't use it at all.

Meteors. A volley of 10 burning stones that rain down around you. These hit hardest of all three attacks, with 120 Fire each, so they are the main reason the Barley Wine matters. You can outrun them, hide behind the stone fingers around the altar, or stand right in front of his face in melee, where his head blocks most of them.

Nova. His close-range answer when you're within 10 m. The blue fist is your cue: dodge-roll as the fist lands and the roll's invulnerability takes the whole hit. The initial blast can be blocked or dodged, but the blue fire it leaves behind can't be blocked, so step out of it afterwards.

Where do you find Fuling totems?

A Fuling Village in the Valheim Plains with huts, watchtowers and armed Fulings

You need five, and they are rarer than most players expect. Per the Valheim Wiki's Fuling totem page, every source and its odds:

SourceChance
Fuling Village50% per bonfire (on an altar next to it)
Fuling Outpost (restored variant, missing walls)Guaranteed, on the ground floor
Fuling Berserker kill10% drop
Stonehenge centre chest2.8%

Totems weigh 1, stack to 30 and can go through portals, so farm them on any trip and carry them home.

The farming route that works: look for the half-ruined stone towers with wooden stakes around them. The restored Fuling Outpost, the one with walls missing so you can see inside, always has a totem on the ground floor, guarded by a handful of Fulings. The intact square tower with a single door has no totem, so skip it if totems are all you need. Villages are the next best bet. Pick off the sentries in the watchtowers and the Shamans first with a bow, then clear the rest in small groups. One catch from the wiki: if the totem's pedestal is destroyed before you pick it up, the totem is lost. Keep your AoE away from the altar.

How do you find Yagluth's Forsaken Altar?

Yagluth's location is revealed by a Vegvisir found at Stonehenge structures in the Plains. Four of the six Stonehenge variants have a 40% chance to hold the Vegvisir. In practice, the wiki notes it is often easier to spot the altar directly than to find his Vegvisir. Look for a sunken stone circle ringed by huge curved stone "fingers".

Plains only generate 2,900–8,000 m from the world centre, so you'll be sailing. Before you summon, clear the area. Fuling Villages and tar pits can spawn right next to the altar, and a Berserker joining mid-fight is a common way for a first attempt to go wrong. Some players drop cheap campfires or workbenches around the arena to suppress wild spawns while they fight.

Which Plains enemies are most dangerous before Yagluth?

Plenty of Yagluth runs end before the summon, to ordinary Plains mobs. These are the base (0-star) values from each creature's wiki page:

EnemyHealthHits forHow to handle it
Deathsquito1090 PierceBlock or parry, then one swing kills it. Anti-Sting Concoction stops them attacking entirely
Fuling17585 (club/spear/sword)Pull with arrows, fight in small groups
Fuling Berserker800130 Blunt; 3-slam rage attackDodge the slams, never fight one next to a village
Fuling Shaman10020 Blunt + 100 Fire fireballKill first: casts a barrier that absorbs 100 damage on nearby Fulings
Lox1,000130 Slash / 120 Blunt stompLeave them alone, or tame one (weak to Fire)
Growth (tar pits)1006 orbs × 45 Blunt + 50 PoisonBlunt or Fire; keep 15+ m away
Vile (night only)1,200up to 150 Blunt slamWeak to Fire and Spirit; flees from fire

The Deathsquito fix many players skip: the Anti-Sting Concoction (10 Cloudberries + 3 Grouper + 1 Fragrant Bundle in a Mead Ketill, which ferments into 6). For 10 minutes Deathsquitos approach and then flee instead of attacking. As one r/valheim player put it in a thread asking "Am I ready for Yagluth?": "There is an anti-deathsquito mead if you manage to catch three groupers. Whether it's worth making depends on how much you dislike fishing." Groupers live off the Plains coast and bite on Stingy fishing bait, made from 20 Fishing Bait and a Fuling trophy.

Bonemass's Forsaken Power is the other answer. It gives −25% Pierce, Slash and Blunt damage and removes block stamina cost, which takes the sting out of Deathsquitos and Berserkers for 5 minutes. Our Forsaken Power tier list ranks all of them.

What gear should you craft in the Plains first?

Black Metal is the Plains metal, and you don't mine it. Black Metal Scrap drops from Fulings, Berserkers and Shamans, and turns up in Plains chests (27.8% for 2–5 scrap per roll). You smelt it with Coal in a Blast Furnace (20 Stone, 5 Surtling Cores, 10 Iron, 20 Finewood, built near an Artisan Table). Scrap can't go through a standard portal, so haul it by boat or cart.

ItemMaterials (level 1)Key stat
Black Metal Sword2 Finewood, 20 Black Metal, 5 Linen Thread95 Slash (113 at level 4)
Padded Helmet / Cuirass / Greaves10 Iron + 15–20 Linen Thread each26 armor per piece at level 1
Fire Resistance Barley Wine10 Barley + 10 Cloudberries → 6 wines10 min Fire resistance
Frost arrows8 Wood, 4 Obsidian, 2 Feathers, 1 Freeze Gland → 2026 Pierce + 52 Frost

Linen Thread comes from Flax at a Spinning Wheel. Barley and Flax both grow wild in Fuling Villages: 12 Barley and 11 Flax plants per patch, 2 each when harvested. Both can only be planted in the Plains, so a cultivated plot in a walled Plains outpost beats raiding villages forever. Note that Padded armor is made from Iron, not Black Metal; the Cuirass and Greaves each cost 5% movement speed. For how it stacks against the alternatives, see our Valheim armor tier list. The weapon tier list covers whether to push your Black Metal Sword past level 4.

How do you beat Yagluth, step by step?

  • Prep the arena. Clear nearby Fulings and Growths, place a portal just outside the fight, and optionally scatter campfires to block spawns.
  • Buff up. Eat three foods, drink the Fire Resistance Barley Wine, and pop Bonemass's power if Deathsquitos are around.
  • Place 5 totems and get free hits. Yagluth breaks slowly out of the ground after spawning. You can attack him, even backstab him, before he starts fighting back.
  • Melee: hug his face. Staying inside 10 m stops the Beam completely, and his head soaks most of the Meteors. Watch for the blue right fist and roll through the Nova as it lands, then step out of the lingering fire.
  • Ranged: use the fingers. Circle one of the big stone fingers around the altar so he can't see you, then peek out and fire Frost arrows. If he roars and starts charging the Beam, step back behind the pillar to cancel it. The pillars take damage and can eventually break, so rotate between them.

The wiki's verdict on dodging everything: trying to take zero damage "can make for a very long fight, as Yagluth does not provide many openings". With good food, reasonable armor and the wine, you can absorb hits and keep swinging. Dodge only the Nova.

What do you get for killing Yagluth?

  • Yagluth trophy. Hang it at the Sacrificial Stones for his Forsaken Power: −50% Lightning damage, +25 Farming and +10% damage dealt for 5 minutes (20-minute shared cooldown).
  • 3 Torn Spirits. Each builds a Wisp Fountain (10 Stone + 1 Torn Spirit at a Stonecutter), which attracts the Wisps you need for the Wisplight and Mistlands exploration.
  • World changes. The "The horde is attacking" raid stops; "What's up Gjall?!" and "They sought you out" raids start; 0-star Fulings start spawning at night in the Meadows, Black Forest and Mountain; Haldor sells Eggs for 1,500 coins; and the Bog Witch adds her Grasslands Herbalist Harvest for 160 coins.

The Wisplight is your ticket into the Mistlands fog. The Valheim Mistlands guide picks up from here.

FAQ

What is Yagluth weak to in Valheim? Nothing, officially. He has no weakness entry. He resists Fire, is very resistant to Pierce, and is immune to Poison and Stagger. Hit him with what he takes in full: Frost (Frost arrows), Spirit (Silver Sword, Frostner) or plain Slash and Blunt (Black Metal Sword).

How much health does Yagluth have? 10,000 HP at base, up from Moder's 7,500. Extra players nearby and harder world modifiers make him tougher.

Where do I get Fuling totems? On altars beside bonfires in Fuling Villages (50% each), guaranteed inside restored Fuling Outposts, as a 10% drop from Fuling Berserkers, and rarely (2.8%) from Stonehenge centre chests. You need five.

Is Fire Resistance Barley Wine required for Yagluth? Not strictly, but the wiki notes the fight is balanced around it, and it halves the Fire damage from his meteors and beam. Craft it: 10 Barley and 10 Cloudberries make six.

Can you cheese Yagluth? Yes. The best-known method is circling a stone finger with a bow and Frost arrows, peeking out to shoot and breaking line of sight when he charges his Beam. Some players also dig a tunnel under the altar as a safe spot to heal and repair.

What does Yagluth drop? His trophy (for the Forsaken Power) and three Torn Spirits, used to build Wisp Fountains.

The bottom line

Yagluth is a gear check, not a reflex check. Farm five totems from restored Fuling Outposts, smelt enough Black Metal for a sword, ferment a stack of Fire Resistance Barley Wine, and the fight comes down to two habits: stay close so he can't breathe on you, and roll the blue fist. Do that and the fifth Forsaken is very beatable on a first attempt.
