The Forge of Potential is the only way to push Valheim gear past its normal level cap, and it is also the fastest way to lose a weapon you spent three biomes building. It shipped with Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026. Within weeks, r/valheim threads were passing around probability calculators and arguing over whether its RNG is fair.
This guide works through the numbers. It covers where the Forge spawns, all 16 idols and where they drop, the real odds at every level, how many idols a level-10 item actually costs, what you get back when an item breaks, and which items are worth the risk. Everything applies to the live build, patch 1.0.20 (released October 15, 2026).
Quick answer: The Forge of Potential is a unique Mountain point of interest (one per world) that upgrades weapons, armor, shields and tools beyond their normal maximum level. Each attempt costs one idol (the one listed in the item's recipe) and no other materials. It has a 65% chance to add +1 quality and a 35% chance to destroy the item. When an item breaks you get back 35% (rounded up) of its base crafting cost plus its current level's upgrade cost. The idol is never refunded. The odds never change with level, skill or station: taking a level-4 item to level 10 takes six wins in a row, a 7.54% chance, and about 35 idols on average. Most Deep North weapons cap at Q3 at normal stations in 1.0.20, so for them the Forge is the only route to Q4.
What is the Forge of Potential in Valheim?
The Forge of Potential is a crafting station built into a world location. You do not build it. It is a stone table held by two chained statues, with a ring of idol statues and a runestone around it, always on a Mountain peak.
Use it like a workbench. Walk up, interact, and the crafting menu lists every item in your inventory that the Forge can upgrade. According to the Valheim Wiki, an upgrade "costs a single idol of the tier that matches the item, and no other materials," and "unlike normal upgrades there is no maximum item level."
The runestone beside the table tells you what you are risking:
"Ingrid and Torgunn decided to honour the gods in this place. They smiled upon Ingrid, granting her a great boon. Torgunn on the other hand, was made all too aware of the risk she was taking, as her blade shattered into pieces upon the altar." — Forge of Potential runestone, Valheim 1.0
That is the whole system: one boon or one shattered blade per roll.
Where is the Forge of Potential?
There is one Forge per world, and its position is not fixed. At world generation the game picks up to 10 candidate sites, all inside Mountain biomes and away from their edges, each at least 400 metres apart and at least 500 metres from the world centre. The first candidate site you get close to becomes the permanent Forge, and the other nine are removed. Once you find it, an idol icon appears on your map.
That means no seed map or coordinate list from another world will help you, unless you are playing that exact seed. To find yours:
- Sweep large Mountain regions, not small peaks. Sites sit away from biome edges, so thin ridges next to the Meadows are unlikely.
- Skip the area near spawn. Nothing generates within 500 metres of the centre.
- Come prepared for Mountain cold. You need Frost Resistance Mead or a Wolf Fur Cape. Our Valheim Mountain guide covers survival up there.
- Put a portal next to it. You will return many times, often carrying several stacks of idols.
On a shared server, everyone uses the same Forge, because it is placed per world, not per player.
What are the idols, and where do you find them?
There are 16 idols: a Battle and a Protection idol for each of the 8 material tiers. Battle idols upgrade weapons and tools. Protection idols upgrade armor, capes and shields. Each item accepts exactly one idol, shown in its upgrade recipe, so a Bloodgold Battle Idol will not touch your Frostner, which needs a Silver Battle Idol. Every idol stacks to 20 and weighs 0.5.
Idols only drop from loot chests in points of interest. They overlap into the next biome, so you find a mix of two tiers in most places:
| Idol tier | Mostly upgrades | Main chest sources (Valheim Wiki, 1.0.20) |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden | Meadows gear (Club, Crude Bow, leather, rags) | Meadows: Abandoned House, Abandoned Farm, Viking Graveyard |
| Bronze | Black Forest gear | Meadows POIs above; Black Forest: Troll Cave, Burial Chambers, Abandoned Outpost, Abandoned Hut |
| Iron | Swamp gear | Black Forest: Troll Cave, Abandoned Outpost, Abandoned Hut; Swamp: Sunken Crypt, Swamp Grave, Swamp Runestone Tower |
| Silver | Mountain gear (Frostner, Wolf/Fenris armor) | Swamp POIs above; Mountain: Abandoned Cabin, Mountain Tower, Howling Cavern |
| Black Metal | Plains gear (Padded armor, Black Metal weapons) | Mountain POIs above; Plains: Plains chests, Sealed Tower |
| Black Marble | Mistlands gear (Carapace, Mistwalker, staves) | Plains POIs above; Mistlands: Dvergr Guard Tower, Rock Spire, Infested Mine; Ashlands: Charred Fortress, Putrid Hole |
| Flametal | Ashlands gear (Embla/Ask sets, Ripper, Staff of the Wild) | Mistlands and Ashlands POIs above; Deep North: Lumber Camp, Abandoned Village, Mörkhalla, Viking Graveyard, Shipwreck, Winding Tunnels |
| Bloodgold | Deep North gear (Nord, Frostfire and Thunderblood lines) | Deep North: Mörkhalla, Abandoned Village, Viking Graveyard, Shipwreck |
A few exceptions trip people up:
- Idols follow the recipe, not always the biome. Splitnir and Krom both take a Black Marble Battle Idol. The Club, Stone Axe, Flint Spear and Crude Bow use the Wooden Battle Idol, and leather and rag armor use the Wooden Protection Idol. Check the item's recipe at the Forge before you farm a tier.
- The training "Wooden Weapons" cannot be forged. These are the 1-damage practice weapons, and the one exception is the Wooden Sword, which takes a Bronze Battle Idol. Ordinary early weapons like the Club are not affected.
- Tools can be forged with Battle idols. The Hammer, Hoe, Cultivator, metal Pickaxes, Scythe and Snow Shovel all qualify, but they only gain durability.
- Items with no quality level cannot be upgraded at all, such as the Butcher Knife and the Antler Pickaxe.
For Bloodgold idols, Mörkhalla runs and Abandoned Villages are where the stacks come from. You already clear Mörkhalla for the final-boss chain, which our Kall Fimbulbringer guide walks through.
What are the real Forge of Potential odds?
Every attempt is a single roll against one number, 65%. Win and the item gains one quality level, with no cap. Lose and the item is destroyed. There is no third outcome, and a failure never drops the item one level. A community audit of the 1.0.20 game files found that the game has a downgrade code path, but every idol is set to break the item on a failed roll instead.
What does not change the odds:
- The item's current level. A Q5 sword and a Q40 sword both roll 65%.
- Your skills, station level or Forsaken Power. Nothing in the roll reads them.
- Previous failures. There is no pity timer or streak protection.
Because each roll is independent, your chance to climb several levels in a row is 0.65 multiplied by itself once per level:
| From Q4 to | Wins in a row | Chance one item survives | About 1 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q5 | 1 | 65.0% | 1.5 |
| Q6 | 2 | 42.3% | 2.4 |
| Q7 | 3 | 27.5% | 3.6 |
| Q8 | 4 | 17.9% | 5.6 |
| Q10 | 6 | 7.54% | 13.3 |
| Q12 | 8 | 3.19% | 31.4 |
| Q15 | 11 | 0.88% | 114 |
The math is simple, but people misread it all the time. The 65% figure is per attempt, not per climb. A one-level upgrade is a good bet. A five-level climb on a single copy fails almost nine times in ten.
Why does Deep North gear start at Q3?
On the Valheim Wiki, the Nord Bow's Q4 upgrade needs a level 7 Black Forge, which is marked "not yet available". The Black Forge currently tops out at level 6. The Frostfire and Thunderblood weapon lines and the Moose Hide Cape show the same level-7 requirement. So in 1.0.20, Q3 is the normal maximum for that gear, and the Forge of Potential is the only way to reach Q4. Every climb starts one level lower: Q3 → Q10 is seven wins in a row, a 4.9% chance.
What did patch 1.0.20 change?
The official 1.0.20 notes contain one line about the Forge:
"Fixed a possible exploit to Forge of Potential" — Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.20 notes (October 15, 2026)
Iron Gate did not explain the exploit. The community audit of the 1.0.20 build reports that the Forge now draws from a saved random sequence for each player, item type and target level. The sequence moves forward after every attempt, but the 65% chance itself is unchanged. In practice, quitting and reloading no longer gives you a fresh roll on the same upgrade. The same patch also stopped rare-drop randomness from resetting between sessions. Treat the internal detail as community-sourced, because Iron Gate has not documented it.
How many idols does it take to reach level 10?
This is where the table above turns into a stockpile. If you keep crafting replacement copies at a normal station, bring each to Q4, and keep forging until one copy reaches the target, the averages look like this. These are computed from the 65% rate, with each broken copy replaced:
| Target (from Q4) | Average idols | Median idols | 90% of climbs done within | Average copies destroyed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q5 | 1.5 | 1 | 3 | 0.5 |
| Q6 | 3.9 | 3 | 7 | 1.4 |
| Q7 | 7.5 | 6 | 15 | 2.6 |
| Q8 | 13.1 | 10 | 27 | 4.6 |
| Q10 | 35.0 | 26 | 75 | 12.3 |
For Deep North gear that starts at Q3, add one win to every row. Reaching Q4 averages 1.5 idols, and Q3 → Q10 averages about 55 idols (median 40, 90% within 121).
Two takeaways:
- Plan for the 90% column, not the average. A Q10 climb costs 26 idols for a typical player, but one player in ten needs more than 75. That is almost four full stacks of a tier you can only loot.
- The real cost is the replacements. About 12 destroyed copies on the way to Q10 means rebuilding a Q4 item 12 times. For a Bloodgold weapon, each copy costs Bloodgold, a mould and Frost Foundry time, and you need about 19 copies on average for a Q3 → Q10 run.
What do you get back when an item breaks?
A broken item is not a total loss. The Valheim Wiki puts the refund at 35% (rounded up) of the materials for the item's base crafting cost plus the cost of its current level. Above level 4, each extra level counts as half a level for this calculation. Ingredients the game marks as non-recoverable do not come back, and the idol is never refunded, because it is consumed on success and on failure.
In practice: say an item costs 30 of a metal to craft and 60 for its last upgrade. A break returns ceil((30 + 60) × 0.35) = 32, out of everything you spent climbing it. The 35% does not include earlier upgrade levels, so a Q4 item never gives back more than about a third of its last two steps.
Which items are worth upgrading at the Forge?
Every forged level adds the same amount the item gained per level on the normal upgrade path. Damage, armor, block and durability go up. Weight and special effects do not. So the question is how big that per-level gain is, and how painful the item is to replace. The per-level figures below come from the community datamine of the 1.0.20 game files. We cross-checked the Nord Bow (+8 pierce, +12 spirit) and the Staff of the Wild (+20 blunt, +20 poison) against the Valheim Wiki. These are raw damage numbers, so enemy resistances and spirit immunity will change what you actually get.
| Item | Idol | Gain per forged level | Replacement cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nord Bow | Bloodgold Battle | +20 (8 pierce, 12 spirit) | High (Bloodgold + mould) | ✅ Top target, convert first |
| Frostfire Bow | Bloodgold Battle | +19 | High | ✅ Strong gain per roll |
| Thunderblood Knucklechains | Bloodgold Battle | +13 | High | ✅ Strong gain per roll |
| Mistwalker | Black Marble Battle | +11 (frost + spirit) | Low | ✅ Best cheap test item |
| Spinesnap | Black Marble Battle | +9 | Medium | ✅ Solid |
| Frostner | Silver Battle | +6 | Low | 🟡 Cheap, modest gain |
| Staff of the Wild | Flametal Battle | +40 (20 blunt, 20 poison) | Medium | ⚠️ Projectile only (see below) |
| Fenris Coat / Hood / Leggings | Silver Protection | +2 armor | Medium | 🟡 Mid-game only |
| Krom | Black Marble Battle | +6 | Medium | ❌ Small gain on a big base |
| Breastplate of the Protector | Bloodgold Protection | +2 armor | High | ❌ Low value |
| Arbalest | Black Marble Battle | +3 | Medium | ❌ Skip |
| Ripper (all variants) | Flametal Battle | +3 | Medium | ❌ Skip |
The pattern is clear:
- Armor is a poor gamble. Nearly every body piece gains just +2 armor per level, which is a few percent on a late-game set. Keep Protection idols for shields or a cheap mid-game set you want to push.
- High-scaling weapons are the targets. Bows, knucklechains and the elemental Deep North lines gain the most per level. If you are choosing a main weapon to commit idols to, our Valheim weapon tier list ranks them by what they do before forging.
- Crossbows and the Ripper hardly benefit. Their big base damage comes with a +3 per-level gain, so each roll barely moves them.
Two traps that waste idols
The Staff of the Wild's vines do not scale. The +40 per level applies to the projectile. The Valheim Wiki notes that vine damage "scales with the player's Elemental Magic skill, the staff's level is irrelevant for the vine damage." Forging it improves only part of what the staff does. Our magic guide explains what actually scales on each staff.
Convert Deep North weapons with essences BEFORE you forge. Nord weapons can be turned into Frostfire or Thunderblood variants with essences. Per the Valheim Wiki, "an upgraded Nord Bow will NOT keep its upgrade level when it is modified using essences." Forge a Nord weapon to Q6 and then convert it, and you lose those levels. Settle on the final variant first, then take it to the Forge. Our Deep North gear guide covers the essence conversions.
What is the best Forge of Potential strategy?
The numbers above lead to a simple playbook:
- Stop at +1 or +2 on gear you can't easily replace. One forged level wins 65% of the time and two wins 42%. Past that, you are gambling with an item you cannot easily rebuild.
- Go deep only on cheap items. Mid-game items like the Frostner or Mistwalker cost far less to rebuild than Bloodgold gear, so a long climb on them is affordable. For a run at Q10, this is the place.
- Always forge a spare, never your only copy. Craft and upgrade a second Q4 copy first. Keep the original in a chest, and gamble only with the duplicate.
- Stockpile before you start. For a Q8 target from Q4, bring roughly 27 idols of that tier and materials for about 11 replacement copies. That covers 90% of climbs. Budgeting for the average (13 idols, 4–5 copies) runs dry about half the time.
- Back up your world and character files before big sessions. Patch 1.0.12 already had to fix an item-stand durability bug, and Iron Gate warned players to keep backups of high-level gear. This guards against bugs. Since 1.0.20, reloading will not change a roll.
FAQ
What are the odds at the Forge of Potential in Valheim? Every attempt has a 65% chance to raise the item's quality by one level and a 35% chance to destroy it. The chance is the same at every level, and no skill, station level or previous failure changes it.
Is there a max level at the Forge of Potential? No. The normal quality cap is skipped at the Forge, so an item can climb as long as it keeps passing rolls. In practice, Q10 from Q4 is a 7.54% chance and Q15 is under 1%. For most Deep North weapons, the Forge is also the only way past Q3 in patch 1.0.20.
Does a failed Forge attempt lower the item's level instead of breaking it? No. A failed roll always destroys the item. You get back 35% (rounded up) of its base cost plus its current level's upgrade cost, but you never get the idol back.
Where is the Forge of Potential? It spawns once per world on a Mountain peak, at one of up to 10 candidate sites that are at least 500 metres from the world centre. The first candidate you approach becomes the permanent Forge, and an idol icon then marks it on your map.
Is the Forge of Potential worth it for armor? Rarely. Most armor pieces gain only +2 armor per forged level, a few percent on a late-game set. Weapons with large per-level gains, like the Nord Bow and Thunderblood Knucklechains, are a much better use of idols.
Can I upgrade tools at the Forge of Potential? Yes. The Hammer, Hoe, Cultivator, metal Pickaxes, Scythe and Snow Shovel can be forged with Battle idols, but they only gain durability.
