Valheim Mountain Guide: How to Survive the Mountains and Beat Moder (1.0.17)

The Mountain is the fourth biome in Valheim's progression ladder, and it is the first one that can kill you before any enemy even swings — the Freezing debuff drains your health the moment you climb above the snow line. Get your cold protection, your silver gear, and your boss plan sorted before you go up, and the Mountain becomes the tier that unlocks sailing freedom, magic-tier carry weight, and the first real power spike of the mid-game.

This guide is written for the live build, patch 1.0.17 (released 2026-10-06), now that Valheim 1.0 has left Early Access.

Quick answer: To survive the Mountain in Valheim, beat Bonemass first (you need his Wishbone to find buried Silver), then counter the biome's Freezing effect with a Frost Resistance Mead, a wolf fur / lox / fenris / feather cape, or a fully frost-resistant chest armor. Mine Silver with an iron pickaxe or better, craft Silver gear (Silver sword, Frostner, Wolf armor), collect three Dragon eggs from Drake nests, and summon Moder (7,500 HP, weak to Fire, immune to Frost) at her Forsaken Altar.

What you need before you enter the Mountain

The Mountain is gated behind the third boss for a reason. You should arrive with:

  • Bonemass killed — his guaranteed drop, the Wishbone, is what finds buried Silver veins. You can technically enter the Mountain earlier, but without the Wishbone you are mostly blind to the biome's main resource.
  • Iron-tier gear — iron weapons and armor from the Swamp, plus an iron pickaxe or better. Silver veins and Obsidian nodes both require at least an iron pickaxe to mine.
  • Frost protection — the single most important item. Without it, the Freezing status drains your health continuously the entire time you are in the biome.
  • A portal and a small forward base — Silver cannot be teleported, so you will be building a staging camp. More on that below.

If you are still working up the tech tree, our Valheim Swamp guide covers beating Bonemass and farming iron, and the full Valheim boss order lays out the whole ladder.

Beating the Freezing effect (do this first)

Entering the Mountain applies Freezing, a damage-over-time effect that is far more dangerous than the enemies when you first arrive. Per the Valheim Wiki, you can negate Freezing with any one of the following:

  • Frost Resistance Mead — brewed at a Fermenter; the portable, early option you carry in a stack.
  • A Wolf Fur Cape, Lox Cape, Fenris Coat, or Feather Cape — the equipped, permanent option.
  • The Wolf Armor Chest — note that the Wolf Armor Legs do _not_ grant frost resistance, so the chest piece is doing the work, not the set.
  • Standing near a campfire — useful for base camps, useless while exploring.

The practical play: carry Frost Resistance Meads for your first few trips, then switch to a cape or Wolf Armor chest once you have mined enough Silver to craft it. One correction worth printing because third-party roundups get it wrong constantly — there is no hunger or starvation system in Valheim. Food is a timed buff that grants max Health, Stamina, and Eitr; it is not a fuel gauge, and you will never "starve" on the Mountain. You can carry up to three different foods active at once.

Mountain enemies and how to fight them

The Mountain's roster is aggressive and hits hard. Here are the core threats with wiki-verified stats (base / 0-star values).

EnemyHealthKey dangerCounter
Wolf80 (160 at 1★, 240 at 2★)Fast, packs, 70 SlashBlock/parry; they are tameable
Drake100Ranged Spit cold (90 Frost) from the airWeak to Fire; shoot them down for a Freeze gland
Fenring300Night-only, lunging Jump (95 Slash)Weak to Fire, resists Poison; fight near fire
Stone Golem800Huge Blunt slams; immune to Fire/Frost/PoisonVery weak to Pickaxe — hit it with your pickaxe
Draugr / Skeleton—Spawn around Mountain Towers & cabinsStandard undead; clear the structure

A few things that change how you play:

  • Stone Golems are a trap for melee players. They are immune to Fire, Frost, Poison, and Spirit, and resist Pierce and Slash — but they are very weak to Pickaxe damage. Swapping to your pickaxe for a Golem fight is not a meme; it is the intended answer.
  • Drakes fight from the sky. A single Drake is trivial, but they Spit cold from range while Wolves close on you. Deal with the Drake first (Fire arrows are ideal) so you are not kiting two threats at once.
  • Fenrings only spawn at night. If you are getting mauled by werewolf-looking enemies, it is nighttime — consider making camp until dawn.
  • Frost Caves (and the Howling Caverns dungeon) are a separate, harder encounter inside the biome, home to Cultists, their pet Ulv, Bats, and more Stone Golems. Clear the surface biome before you dive one.

Silver: the resource that unlocks everything

Silver is why you came to the Mountain. It smelts from Silver ore in a Smelter and is the gateway to the entire mid-game kit.

A Valheim Silver vein being mined in the snowy Mountain biome

Finding Silver:

  • Silver veins are buried beneath the snow, so you need the Wishbone (from Bonemass) equipped — it pings faster as you approach a deposit.
  • No Wishbone yet? There is a backup: slam the ground with a Stagbreaker. If the text "Too Hard" appears and there are no visible rocks nearby, there is almost certainly Silver under your feet.
  • Veins occasionally poke through to the surface, but do not count on it.

Mining it: Silver veins require an iron pickaxe or better. Dig the whole vein out — deposits run deep underground, and like all metals, Silver cannot pass through a portal. You will be sailing or carting it home, which is exactly why a forward base at the foot of the Mountain pays off.

What Silver crafts (Mountain tier): Silver Sword, Frostner (the frost-and-spirit hammer), Fang Spear, Draugr Fang bow, Silver Shield, Silver arrows, the Wolf Armor set, Wolf Fur Cape, and the Crystal Battleaxe. See the Valheim weapon tier list and armor tier list for where each piece ranks.

While you are up here, also grab Obsidian (surface nodes, iron pickaxe+, for Obsidian and Frost arrows), Onion seeds (found in chests in abandoned cabins — a new crop for your farm), and keep an eye out for Dragon eggs.

How to summon and beat Moder

Moder is the Mountain's boss — the fourth Forsaken, a massive black-scaled frost dragon and the mother of every Drake you have been shooting down.

Moder, the Valheim Mountain boss, a frost dragon using her ice breath in combat

Finding and summoning her:

  • Read the Vegvisir runestones found at ruined Mountain structures; each one marks Moder's nearest Forsaken Altar on your map. There are multiple altar locations in every world.
  • Summon her by placing three Dragon eggs on the altar. Dragon eggs are found at Drake nests on the peaks — and here is the catch: a Dragon egg weighs 200 and cannot be teleported, so plan to haul all three by cart or boat.

The fight (7,500 HP): Moder is weak to Fire and immune to Frost, Spirit, and Stagger, with neutral resistance to physical damage. Her two signature attacks:

  • Spit shotgun — a spread of frost projectiles when she is grounded.
  • Cold breath — a sweeping 200-Frost breath in the air.

Strategy:

  • Fight on flat, open ground at the altar so she lands predictably — Moder alternates between ground and flight phases, and you want her grounded to land melee hits.
  • Bring Fire arrows for the flight phases; a Draugr Fang bow with Fire arrows is the cleanest way to punish her while she is airborne.
  • Keep your own Frost Resistance active — her breath is pure Frost, and you are standing in a Freezing biome.
  • Her guaranteed drops are Dragon tears (used to craft the Artisan Table, which unlocks Blast Furnace and Windmill), her trophy (hang it at the Sacrificial Stones), and the Moder Power.

Moder Power is one of the most quality-of-life Forsaken Powers in the game: a constant tailwind while sailing (your ship always has the wind at its back), plus bonus carry weight, movement speed, and reduced frost damage. After Yagluth, it is the power most Valheim veterans leave active permanently.

Once Moder is down, Dragon tears open the path to the Plains, and you are officially into the back half of the base-game ladder.

FAQ

Do I need to kill Bonemass before the Mountain? Not strictly — you can enter and survive the Mountain with iron gear and frost protection. But Bonemass drops the Wishbone, which is how you locate buried Silver veins, and Silver is the entire point of the biome. Practically, yes: beat Bonemass first.

How do I stop freezing in the Mountain? Equip a Wolf Fur Cape, Lox Cape, Fenris Coat, or Feather Cape, or wear the Wolf Armor Chest, or drink a Frost Resistance Mead. Standing near a campfire also works. Note the Wolf Armor Legs give no frost resistance — the chest piece provides it.

How do I find Silver without the Wishbone? Use a Stagbreaker to slam the ground. If "Too Hard" pops up with no rocks nearby, there is Silver buried underneath. The Wishbone (from Bonemass) is far more reliable, but the Stagbreaker trick works in a pinch.

Can I teleport Silver and Dragon eggs? No. Silver, Silver ore, and other metals cannot pass through a portal, and a Dragon egg (weight 200) also cannot be teleported. You must transport them by cart or boat, which is why a forward base and a knarr matter on the Mountain.

What is Moder weak to? Fire. Moder is immune to Frost, Spirit, and Stagger, so bring Fire arrows and a fire-element weapon. She has 7,500 health and is summoned with three Dragon eggs at her Forsaken Altar.

Why should I use my pickaxe on Stone Golems? Stone Golems are immune to Fire, Frost, and Poison and resist Pierce and Slash, but they are very weak to Pickaxe damage. Switching to your pickaxe turns an 800-HP wall into a manageable fight.

The bottom line

The Mountain rewards preparation over reflexes. Sort out frost resistance, bring the Wishbone, mine Silver into a full kit, and haul your Dragon eggs by boat — do that and Moder is one of the more forgiving boss fights in the game. Clear her and you walk away with Silver gear, Dragon tears for the Artisan Table, and the single best sailing buff in Valheim.

For your next step, line up the full boss order and check your loadout against the weapon and food tier lists before you climb.
