Battlefield 6 Vehicle Unlocks: How Vehicle XP, Hardware Ranks and Mastery Badges Work
Most players go looking for Battlefield 6 vehicle unlocks in the wrong place. They open the Career Rank table, scroll for a tank sight or a heli countermeasure, find nothing but rifles and gadgets, and assume vehicle equipment is locked behind a rank they have not reached.
It is not. Vehicles run on their own progression track, one track per vehicle, and Career Rank barely touches it. This guide covers the game as of Game Update 1.4.3.0, which deployed on Tuesday September 15, 2026 alongside the current season's Tidal Strike content.
Quick answer: Battlefield 6 vehicle unlocks come from Hardware XP, not Career XP. Every individual vehicle has its own Hardware XP path with its own equipment, skins and camouflages, so levelling a Main Battle Tank does nothing for your attack helicopter. Hardware Ranks pay badges at Rank 10 Bronze, 20 Silver, 30 Gold, 40 Platinum and 50 Elite, out of 212 Weapon and Vehicle badges at launch. Occupying a vehicle earns Hardware XP passively, but kills and assists in it pay far more, and an assist counts even if you were only the driver or a passenger. The single vehicle-related Career Rank unlock in the whole 1 to 50 table is the EOD Bot at Rank 40.
Why your Career Rank does not unlock vehicle equipment
Battlefield 6 runs three separate XP currencies, and EA spells them out on the official progression page. Career XP progresses your Career Rank, with functional content through Ranks 1 to 50 and customization items through 51 to 100. Battle Pass XP is earned in tandem with Career XP at a 1:1 ratio and feeds the seasonal track.
Hardware XP is the one that matters here. In EA's words it "progresses Hardware Rank with Primary Weapons, Secondary Weapons, and Vehicles," and Hardware Rank "unlocks new functional additions to Hardware - e.g. weapon attachments, vehicle equipment - as well as other content like Camouflages."
So the tank sight you are hunting is Hardware XP on that tank, and the flare upgrade is Hardware XP on that helicopter. Neither is on the Career ladder, which is why the Rank table looks like it is missing vehicle content.
The exception proves it. Scan the full Rank 1 to 50 unlock list and exactly one entry is vehicle-adjacent: Rank 40, EOD Bot, Gadget, Engineer / Vehicle Decal. One decal. Everything else vehicular sits on the Hardware track.
If you want the Career side of the ladder properly mapped, our Career Rank cap and max level breakdown walks the whole table, including what happens after 50.
Every vehicle levels separately
This is the part that costs people weeks. EA states that "each weapon and vehicle has their own Hardware XP path with its own functional and cosmetic unlocks." Not a shared vehicle pool, not a category pool. A tank does not level helicopters. A transport helicopter does not level a scout helicopter. A patrol boat levels nothing but itself.
The vehicles EA has named in official material give you the spread: Main Battle Tanks, IFVs, APCs, Light Transports and Quads on the ground; the AH-6 Little Bird, the UH-79 transport helicopter, the Pax Armata MH-350 scout helicopter and the jet roster in the air; the RCB90 Patrol Boat, RHIBs and ATPs on the water.
Ranking one up unlocks, in EA's description, "additional equipment for that vehicle, such as on-vehicle weapons and gadgets," edited in the menu before you queue, exactly like an infantry kit. Further along each path come Skins, unique to each vehicle type, and Camouflages, which apply across all customizable vehicles. Skins are per-vehicle; camo work carries across the fleet.
How Battlefield 6 vehicle XP is actually earned
There are two earn rates running at once, and the gap between them is large.
Passive. Occupying the vehicle pays Hardware XP on a timer. EA's own example is blunt: "merely sitting in a Main Battle Tank grants some Hardware XP over time."
Active. Kills and assists in the vehicle pay the real money. EA finishes the same thought with the fix: "if you want to rank up that Hardware faster - and also earn more Career XP - you'll have to deal damage and earn some eliminations with it."
Three rules fall out of that, and the third one is the one almost nobody exploits.
- Kills pay Hardware XP for the specific weapon or vehicle you used. Not the vehicle you own the most hours in. The one that got the kill.
- Assists pay Hardware XP too, on the same specific-hardware basis.
- An assist can include being the driver or a passenger of a vehicle that earns a kill. That is verbatim from EA's XP action list. If you drive and your gunner scores, you are banking vehicle Hardware XP for doing no shooting at all.
Rule three turns vehicle levelling into a two-player job. A duo running a transport or an IFV levels that vehicle for both accounts off the same engagements.
Two caveats. EA's class-action list credits Engineer repairs with Career and Battle Pass XP and does not list Hardware XP alongside them, so repairing a friendly tank is teamplay rather than tank levelling. And the Match Completion Bonus is described as a flat bonus for "Career, Weapon, and Battle Pass XP" — weapon, specifically — so treat end-of-match payouts as a weapon lever, not a vehicle one.
The good news: EA cut the requirements
You are not grinding the launch-day numbers. Under the Season 2 progression revision, EA stated plainly: "We have reduced the Hardware XP requirements for ranking up Weapons and Vehicles." Sidearms were adjusted separately so the effort scales with how much time secondaries get compared to primaries and vehicles.
EA has never published the per-rank Hardware XP tables, so treat any XP-per-rank number on a third-party site as an estimate, not a developer figure. What is confirmed is the direction: vehicle ranks cost less now than they did.
What vehicle mastery actually pays: the badge ladder
Hardware Rank milestones hand out badges, and they use the same metal tiers for vehicles as for guns:
- Hardware Rank 10 — Bronze
- Hardware Rank 20 — Silver
- Hardware Rank 30 — Gold
- Hardware Rank 40 — Platinum
- Hardware Rank 50 — Elite, in red and black
Those badges roll into your Total Badge Rating on your player profile, which is the closest thing Battlefield 6 has to a single mastery number. EA put the scale on record: at launch there were 212 total Weapon and Vehicle Badges, plus one additional badge set per class unlocked through the two Class Assignments, and "Mastery of Total Badge Rating requires all 228 badges, but more will come with each Season."
That is the strategic point for anyone chasing profile completion. Because vehicle badges sit in the same 212 as weapon badges, a player who only ever levels guns has capped their own Total Badge Rating well below the ceiling.
If weapons are where you are behind instead, the fastest weapon unlock route covers the other half of the same 212.
Season 4 added two new vehicles, and they start at zero
The current season's Top Gun content did something that matters for anyone tracking badge counts: it put two new aircraft into the game. EA's Fighter Sweep guide introduces "the F-74A Seacat and F/A-81F Super Spectre aircraft, two vehicle roster additions as of this Update."
New vehicle, new Hardware XP path, starting from nothing. If you are a completionist, your Total Badge Rating target moved.
The mode built around them is also the most efficient jet-levelling environment in the game right now. Fighter Sweep is a jets-only Gauntlet on Tsuru Reef: one 10-minute round, six squads of two, first to 1000 points or the highest score when time runs out. Principal Game Designer Greg Black explained the design intent directly: "For starters, whenever you need one, a new jet is ready to go. But if you're not ready to fly yourself, the new two seater jets allow you to get your feel for aerial combat by back-seating while someone else does the flying for you."
Read that against the assist rule from earlier. A two-seater, a competent pilot and a passenger who wants aircraft Hardware XP is a legitimate farming setup, not a workaround.
Carrier Strike, the other Top Gun mode, leans the same way. Gameplay Designer Steve Cheverie described the goal: "With Carrier Strike, we leaned into the combined arms aspect that makes Battlefield so special, giving vehicles a more impactful role in directly damaging the carrier." Vehicle time there is objective time. One planning note: Update 1.4.3.0 stopped jets spawning on the carriers once breached, so get your air time early in the round.
What Update 1.4.3.0 changed for vehicles
Vehicle Improvements was the first of the six pillars EA listed for this update, described as "gameplay, balance, presentation, and handling improvements" for Transport Helicopters, RCB90s and Scout Helicopters. The changes worth knowing before you pick a vehicle to invest in:
- RCB90 Patrol Boat health increased from 800 to 1000, with improved steering responsiveness and a fix for its Deploy Ramp passive staying active when it should not. A 25 percent survivability increase on a naval map rotation is a real reason to put boat time in now.
- AH-6 Little Bird minigun overheat per bullet increased by roughly 33 percent, so it overheats about 1.5 seconds faster under continuous fire, and its minigun damage against RCB90 Patrol Boats and ATPs was cut by 50 percent.
- Transport Helicopters can now correctly take damage from small arms fire. Flying a transport is meaningfully riskier than it was last week.
- Anti-air got stronger. The lock-on directional indicator for air vehicles was removed from the SLM-93A and 9K38 Igla. EA's developer comment: "This means pilots will have to break off attacks earlier or wait for the missile trail to find its source, making the MANPAD a more effective deterrent and its user less vulnerable to immediate retaliation."
- Tank and RCB90 third-person zoom stutter was fixed, along with a Repair Tool aim rotation bug in the UH-79 open seat, and the Pax scout helicopter was renamed to its correct name, MH-350.
- New seasonal hardware assignments were added, a second unlock route running parallel to raw Hardware XP.
Players have also flagged something that is not on EA's changelog: vehicle boost handling feeling different since the update, especially on controller. Treat it as a community observation, not a patch note. If earned items are not showing in a loadout at all, the missing attachments issue in Update 1.4.3.0 is the documented bug.
The fastest way to farm Battlefield 6 vehicle XP
Putting the confirmed mechanics together into an actual session plan:
- Pick one vehicle and commit for the night. Progress is per-vehicle. Rotating between a tank, a heli and a boat across one evening splits your XP three ways and finishes no ladder.
- Queue the modes that spawn your vehicle reliably. Naval and large-scale maps for boats and aircraft, the bigger Conquest and Breakthrough layouts for armour. Tsuru Reef Breakthrough had two RHIBs added in sector 1 and Light Transports swapped for APCs in the first two sectors this update.
- Bring a gunner. Driver and passenger assists both pay Hardware XP for the vehicle. Two players in one vehicle is close to double the effective farm rate of two players in two vehicles.
- Stack an XP Boost on the session. Boosts double the earn rate while active, and how they stack with the rest of your multipliers is covered in our XP boost and multiplier guide.
- Play for damage, not survival. Passive occupancy XP is real but small. EA's guidance is that eliminations and damage move the rank.
- Check the seasonal hardware assignments. They unlock content without touching your Hardware Rank.
The honest constraint is time. A dozen-plus vehicle ladders, each with its own equipment, skins and five badge tiers, on top of the weapon side of the same 212, is not a weekend. It is why vehicle badges are the most commonly empty section of an otherwise complete profile.

Frequently asked questions
How do you unlock vehicle upgrades in Battlefield 6? By earning Hardware XP in that specific vehicle. Hardware Rank unlocks the vehicle's equipment, including on-vehicle weapons and gadgets, plus skins and camouflages. Career Rank does not unlock vehicle equipment.
Does Career Rank unlock any vehicles? No vehicles, and only one vehicle-related item across the entire Rank 1 to 50 table: the EOD Bot at Career Rank 40, which comes with a Vehicle Decal.
Does levelling one vehicle level the others? No. EA states that each weapon and vehicle has its own Hardware XP path with its own unlocks. A Main Battle Tank and an attack helicopter share nothing.
Do you earn vehicle XP just by sitting in a vehicle? Yes, but slowly. Passive Hardware XP accrues from occupying the vehicle, while kills, assists and damage pay substantially more.
Do passengers get vehicle XP? Yes. EA's XP list states that an assist can include being the driver or a passenger of a vehicle that earns a kill, and assists pay Hardware XP for that vehicle.
Does repairing vehicles give vehicle XP? Engineer repairs are listed under class-based actions that reward Career and Battle Pass XP. Hardware XP is not listed alongside them, so do not count repairs as vehicle levelling.
What are the Battlefield 6 vehicle badge tiers? Bronze at Hardware Rank 10, Silver at 20, Gold at 30, Platinum at 40 and Elite, in red and black, at Rank 50. There were 212 combined Weapon and Vehicle Badges at launch and 228 in total once the per-class sets are included, with more added each season.
Are vehicle camos shared across vehicles? Camouflages can be applied to all customizable vehicles. Skins are unique to each vehicle type and are not shared.
Which new vehicles were added this season? The F-74A Seacat and F/A-81F Super Spectre jets arrived with the Top Gun update, described by EA as two vehicle roster additions as of that update.
Did vehicle boost change in Update 1.4.3.0? EA's changelog does not list a boost change. Players report the handling feeling different, especially on controller, but it is unconfirmed.
