Clash Royale Evolution Electro Giant: How It Works and How to Counter It (Season 88 Shocktober)

Supercell revealed Season 88 "Shocktober" in the late-September 2026 TV Royale stream, and alongside the Hero Electro Wizard it is shipping the season's second big electric toy: the Evolution Electro Giant. The base Electro Giant has always been a slow, awkward win condition that most of the ladder ignores — but the Evolution bolts on a mechanic no other card has, and it is the kind of effect that can quietly warp a push if you do not know what it is doing. This guide explains exactly how the Evolution works, why its new "Zap Pack" is more dangerous than it sounds, whether it is worth an Evolution slot, and — the part most of the ladder will actually search for — how to counter it without feeding it.

Everything about the Evolution's mechanic below is taken from Supercell's official Season 88 reveal. The base-card behaviour is from the live Electro Giant. Where a number is pre-release or community-measured, it is labelled — do not treat a pre-launch HP or damage figure as final.

Quick answer: what is the Evolution Electro Giant in Clash Royale?

Evolution Electro Giant is an evolved form of the 7-Elixir Electro Giant that gains a "Zap Pack." The pack charges every few seconds and then releases a shockwave around the Giant; each pulse removes levels from every enemy troop and building caught in range, making them visibly shrink and get weaker. Supercell describes it as Royal Chef's ability in reverse — where Royal Chef levels a friendly troop up, the Evo Electro Giant levels enemies down. It keeps everything the base Electro Giant already does — walking slowly toward the nearest building while zapping, and shocking back any troop that melees it. It arrives with Season 88 "Shocktober" at the October 2026 rollover (Monday, October 5, 2026), and you run it from your single Evolution slot (or the Wild slot) once it has charged the required number of cycles.

If you only remember one thing: the Evolution does not just deal more damage — it de-levels your defenders mid-fight, so the Mini P.E.K.K.A or Inferno you dropped to kill it is weaker than the card in your hand. That is the whole trick, and it changes how you defend.

How the base Electro Giant works (the part the Evolution keeps)

Before the Evolution matters, you have to know the card it is built on, because the Evo keeps all of it.

  • 7 Elixir, Epic rarity, single-target. It is one of the most expensive cards in the game, which is why it has never been a ladder staple.
  • It walks toward the nearest building and attacks it, not toward troops. Like the Giant and Golem, it is a building-targeting tank.
  • It has a reflect "shock." Any unit that attacks the Electro Giant in melee gets zapped back repeatedly, taking chip damage and getting its attack interrupted. This is what makes melee swarms a bad idea against it — they melt themselves on the reflect.
  • Because it is slow and expensive, the base card lives or dies on the support behind it. Nobody plays a lone Electro Giant; they play Electro Giant plus a damage dealer (historically Night Witch, Mother Witch or a spell-bait package) so the Giant soaks while the support kills the tower.

The Evolution does not change the targeting, the cost, or the reflect. It adds the Zap Pack on top.

The Evolution mechanic: the Zap Pack, explained

Here is the new behaviour, in order:

  • The Zap Pack charges on a timer. Every few seconds while the Evolution is alive, the pack builds up a charge. (The exact charge interval is a pre-release detail — wait for the live card before quoting a second count.)
  • It releases a shockwave pulse in a radius around the Electro Giant.
  • Every enemy unit and building in that radius loses levels. Affected troops visibly shrink — the animation is the tell — and because their level drops, their hitpoints and damage drop with them.
  • The effect stacks with repeated pulses for as long as the Giant survives in range of your defenders.

Supercell's own framing is the clearest way to hold it: it is Royal Chef in reverse. Royal Chef, one of the four Tower Troops, periodically "feeds" a friendly unit to raise its level by one. The Evo Electro Giant does the opposite to your side of the river — it keeps knocking your troops down a level while it tanks.

Why that is nastier than extra damage. A normal tank just needs to be out-damaged. A de-levelling tank actively weakens the thing you are using to out-damage it. Drop a Mini P.E.K.K.A to shred it, stand in the pulse, and your Mini P.E.K.K.A is now a lower-level Mini P.E.K.K.A doing less damage with less health. The longer your defender hugs the Giant, the worse your defender gets. That is the behaviour you are defending against — not a bigger health bar.

Is the Evolution Electro Giant worth an Evolution slot?

Short version: for most players, not on day one. Here is the honest read.

Arguments for:

  • It is a genuinely unique mechanic — nothing else de-levels enemies — so it will be strong in any matchup where the opponent relies on a single expensive defender (think one Mini P.E.K.K.A, one P.E.K.K.A, one Inferno Dragon).
  • Electro Giant decks already have a defined shell (Electro Giant + Tornado + a spell package), so slotting the Evo in is low-friction if you already play the archetype.

Arguments against:

  • The base Electro Giant is 7 Elixir and slow — the Evolution does not fix either problem. You can still be punished hard on the opposite lane while your push develops.
  • Season 88's October balance patch is all nerfs, landing with the October 6, 2026 maintenance — the day after the season starts — and Supercell has said the goal is to flush oppressive decks before the World Finals. A brand-new Evolution that looks oppressive in week one is exactly the kind of card that gets reined in fast. Do not grind your whole Evolution budget into it before the dust settles.
  • Your single Evolution slot is precious. If you are not already an Electro Giant player, a proven Evo (see our best Clash Royale Evolution guide) is a safer spend.

Verdict: worth trying if you already run Electro Giant or love the archetype; worth watching for everyone else until the live numbers and the October nerf pass settle. Evolutions are unlocked and charged the same way they always have been — there is no new currency here.

How to counter the Evolution Electro Giant

This is what most of the ladder will be searching for, so here is the practical version. The golden rule: do not let your expensive defender sit inside the pulse.

  • Pull it off the lane with a building. A Tesla, Cannon or Bomb Tower placed centrally drags the building-targeting Giant toward the middle and buys time. Tesla is especially clean here because it hides underground between shots and does not get melee-reflected.
  • Kill it from range, not from melee. Because of the reflect shock and the de-levelling pulse, you never want a melee troop hugging it. Inferno Tower and Inferno Dragon ramp through its health fast from outside the worst of the fight — just be aware the pulse can still shrink them, so support them.
  • Use a spell to clear the support, not the Giant. The Giant is never the threat on its own — the troops behind it are. A well-placed Fireball, Poison or Lightning on the support package stops the tower from actually taking damage while your building eats the Giant.
  • Lightning is a genuine hard answer. It can reset/stun and chunk the Giant plus its nearest support in one cast. (Note: October's balance pass may touch spell values — check the live patch, see our October 2026 balance changes.)

  • Punish the opposite lane. The single best counter to a 7-Elixir win condition is not defending it at all on even trades — it is making them spend 7+ Elixir on a slow push while you race the other lane with a cheaper, faster win condition.
  • Do not throw cheap swarm into it. Skeletons, Goblins, Bats and the like get shock-reflected and then shrunk by the pulse. They do almost nothing and die for free.

The mental model: building to redirect, ranged DPS to kill, spell on the support, and race the other lane. Melee swarm is the trap.

What else is coming in Season 88 "Shocktober"

The Evolution Electro Giant is one of two electric headliners. The full Shocktober package (all officially revealed by Supercell) includes:

  • Hero Electro Wizard — a Hero form of the base Electro Wizard that chain-stuns the nearest enemies with its single-use ability. (Full breakdown: Clash Royale Hero Electro Wizard explained.)
  • The return of C.H.A.O.S for a third season, with 20 new cards joining the pool. This time every modifier you pick is the same rarity, and you are guaranteed an Epic modifier by your fourth pick.
  • A horror-movie-themed Album Event — collect Snippets, complete sections, unlock rewards.
  • The CRL 20 Win Challenge returns: reach 20 wins, but three losses knocks you out.
  • "Keep the Lights On" — a later-October community event where everyone's choices move a shared energy meter toward a collective reward.
  • An October balance patch that is solely nerfs, landing with the October 6, 2026 maintenance.

Season 88 begins Monday, October 5, 2026, the day Season 87 "Minion Academy" and its Academy Antics album event end. For the broader picture, see our full Season 88 Shocktober rundown and the best October 2026 decks.

FAQ

When does the Evolution Electro Giant come out in Clash Royale? It launches with Season 88 "Shocktober" at the October 2026 season rollover — Monday, October 5, 2026, the same day Season 87 "Minion Academy" ends. Supercell officially revealed it in the late-September 2026 TV Royale stream.

What does the Evolution Electro Giant actually do? It keeps everything the base 7-Elixir Electro Giant does — walking toward the nearest building, attacking it, and shock-reflecting any melee attacker — and adds a Zap Pack. The pack charges on a timer, then releases a shockwave pulse that removes levels from every enemy troop and building in range, shrinking them and lowering their stats. Supercell describes it as Royal Chef's ability in reverse.

How do you counter the Evolution Electro Giant? Pull it with a building like Tesla or Cannon, kill it with ranged DPS (Inferno Tower/Dragon) rather than melee, spell the support troops behind it rather than the Giant itself, and consider racing the opposite lane instead of over-defending a 7-Elixir push. Never feed it cheap melee swarm — it gets shock-reflected and then shrunk by the pulse.

Is the Evolution Electro Giant worth unlocking? If you already play the Electro Giant archetype, yes — it is a unique, slot-in upgrade. If you do not, hold off. The base card is still slow and 7 Elixir, and Season 88's balance patch is all nerfs (October 6 maintenance), so a card that looks strong in week one may be reined in quickly. Spend your single Evolution slot carefully.

Does the Evolution Electro Giant need a new currency to unlock? No. Evolutions are unlocked and charged exactly as they always have been — through the normal Evolution progression — and run from your single Evolution slot or the Wild slot. There is no special Shocktober currency required for the card itself.

What is the difference between the Hero Electro Wizard and the Evolution Electro Giant? They are two different Season 88 cards. Hero Electro Wizard is a Hero form of the Electro Wizard with an activatable chain-stun ability (one use per deployment). Evolution Electro Giant is an evolved form of the Electro Giant with the passive de-levelling Zap Pack. One is a Hero, one is an Evolution — they use different special deck slots.
