DBD Ghost Face Guide 2026: Night Shroud, Best Builds and How to Counter Him

Ghost Face is the Killer people think they understand. He is a seven-year-old DLC everyone has played against, wrapped in the most recognisable horror mask ever made — and almost every fact players repeat about him in chat is wrong. He is not from Scream. He cannot be bought with Iridescent Shards. And he has been buffed, quietly, in five separate patches between June 2023 and May 2026.

This guide applies to Dead by Daylight Patch 10.1.2a, live as of 23 September 2026. Every power value, add-on effect and perk line below is taken from the Official Dead by Daylight Wiki and Behaviour Interactive's published patch notes. Where the 10.2.0 Public Test Build changes something, it is labelled as PTB and separated from what is live — that distinction matters more than usual this week, and it is the thing rival guides are currently getting wrong. Build recommendations are timesaver.gg editorial.

Quick answer: Ghost Face is Danny Johnson, a BHVR-original character who only licenses the mask from Fun World — there is no Scream connection. He released on 18 June 2019 with Patch 3.0.0 and costs 500 Auric Cells / $4.99; because the game still classes him as licensed, Iridescent Shards will not buy him. His power, Night Shroud, grants Undetectable, lets him Stalk at 22.5 points per second (doubled to 45 pts/s while leaning), and Marks a Survivor at 100 points — roughly 4.5 seconds of clean stalking — Exposing them for 60 seconds. To counter him you must hold him in the middle of your screen inside 32 metres for 1.5 seconds. Once you are Marked, that reveal is disabled entirely.

Is DBD's Ghost Face the same as Scream's Ghostface?

No, and this is the single most common mistake in the community.

The Dead by Daylight wiki is blunt about it: "The Ghost Face is unique amongst the numerous licensed Killers of Dead by Daylight in that his persona is a BHVR-original creation, with only the Mask being licensed from Fun World. This also means that there is no connection to any of the movies from the Scream franchise."

Fun World is the costume company that manufactured the mask in real life. Wes Craven's production licensed it for the films; Behaviour licensed the same physical product for the game. The two uses are parallel, not connected. Danny Johnson, alias Jed Olsen, is a journalist and serial killer from Roseville, Florida who writes the articles about his own murders — a character Behaviour wrote from scratch.

The confusion runs deep enough that it reaches the cosmetics. The wiki notes that "contrary to popular belief the Classic Ghost Face skin is not the same one as the Scream version, it is indeed based on the real life costume," because the film outfit is a modified version with sparkles, arm tatters and pointed frills that the in-game default does not have. Behaviour did include one deliberate nod: the knife wipe animation is a tribute to the movies, not a licensed asset.

Why this matters practically: because his persona is original but his mask is licensed, BHVR treats him as a licensed Killer in the store. That has a direct, annoying consequence for your wallet.

How much does Ghost Face cost, and can you buy him with shards?

500 Auric Cells, or $4.99 for the standalone Ghost Face® chapter DLC. You cannot buy him with Iridescent Shards.

The Iridescent Shard store is explicit: Original Characters — the wiki spells out that this means non-licensed — cost 9,000 Iridescent Shards, with older originals discounted to 4,500 and the oldest to 2,250. Licensed characters are simply not on that list. Ghost Face sits on the licensed side of the line despite being a BHVR creation, so shards do nothing for him.

The Ghost Face® chapter, released 18 June 2019 alongside Patch 3.0.0, was unusual in two more ways worth knowing before you buy: it was the first full Chapter DLC to ship without a Survivor, and the first to add no new map or realm. You are paying for one Killer and two Common cosmetic pieces — the Monochrome Shroud body and the Silvery Steel Tactical Knife. If you want the wider picture of what each licence actually includes, our full list of every DBD Killer and their chapter breaks the catalogue down the same way.

How Night Shroud actually works

Ghost Face is a 115% Killer — 4.6 m/s — with a 24-metre Terror Radius, cut from 32 metres in Patch 8.6.0 on 2 April 2025. Night Shroud layers three things on top of that.

Stealth Mode. Press the power button and you gain the Undetectable status effect and unlock stalking. Performing a Basic Attack automatically ends Stealth Mode and empties the gauge, and the power has a 15-second cooldown — down from 30 seconds when he launched, via four separate buffs: 30 to 24 seconds in Patch 5.3.0, 24 to 20 in Patch 7.0.0, 20 to 17 in Patch 8.4.0 and 17 to 15 in Patch 9.6.0.

Crouching. The secondary power button drops him to 4.0 m/s and makes him materially harder to spot and reveal. That crouch speed has crept up twice: 3.6 to 3.8 m/s in Patch 7.0.0, then 3.8 to 4.0 m/s in Patch 9.6.1 on 5 May 2026 — the most recent change to his kit and still live today.

Stalking. Hold the power button in Stealth Mode to highlight Survivor outlines within 40 metres and fill their individual Stalk Meters. The default rate is +22.5 points per second. Standing behind cover triggers the Lean and Stalk prompt, which doubles the rate to +45 pts/s. The meter caps at 100 points, so a clean stalk takes about 4.5 seconds, or roughly 2.2 seconds leaning.

Stalking is slow. Active Stalking — when a Survivor is actually in his view and in range — drops him to 0.92 m/s standing or 0.76 m/s crouched. Passive Stalking, with nobody in frame, is faster at 2.3 m/s standing and 1.9 m/s crouched.

Marked. At 100 points the Survivor is Marked for 60 seconds. They are Exposed — one hit down — and, critically, their ability to reveal Ghost Face is suppressed. There is a 2-second grace period after marking before stalk points start depleting.

One technical detail separates him from the game's other stalker. The wiki notes: "Unlike The Shape, The Ghost Face experiences no Efficiency Penalty, which allows him to stalk Survivors at the same rate regardless of the distance to them." Myers is punished for stalking from far away. Ghost Face is not. A 40-metre lean-stalk fills the meter exactly as fast as one from ten metres.

Every Ghost Face add-on, sorted by what it does

Sixteen add-ons, and they split cleanly into four jobs.

Faster marks. "Philly" reduces marking time by 10%. Headline Cut-Outs raises movement speed while stalking by 40%, which is the one that changes how the power feels — it turns a crawl into something you can actually reposition with.

Longer punish. Cheap Cologne adds +10 seconds to the Marked duration, taking it to 70. Olsen's Journal makes Marked Survivors Oblivious. Olsen's Address Book reveals the auras of Marked Survivors performing rushed actions for 5 seconds. Marked Map extends Killer Instinct by +2 seconds, which matters because Killer Instinct is what fires when a Survivor successfully reveals you.

Anti-reveal. This is the strongest category and most players underuse it. Telephoto Lens makes a Survivor Oblivious for 60 seconds after they reveal you — they pay for the counterplay. Chewed Pen raises the reveal time for Survivors in the Dying State to 3 seconds; Lasting Perfume does the same for Survivors on a hook. Knife Belt Clip cuts your Terror Radius by a further 12 metres while crouched, and Leather Knife Sheath adds +10% movement speed while crouched on top of the 4.0 m/s base.

Power economy. Cinch Straps keeps Night Shroud active on missed Basic Attacks, which is the single most forgiving add-on in his kit. Olsen's Wallet instantly recharges Night Shroud after breaking a breakable wall or pallet. Walleye's Matchbook trims 2 seconds off the recharge.

Two Iridescent-tier effects are worth calling out by name. Driver's License causes a generator to explode for -20% of maximum progression and blocks it for 15 seconds when you mark a Survivor repairing it — once per mark, even if several repairers are marked. Drop-Leg Knife Sheath grants +10% Haste for 5 seconds after marking, which converts a successful stalk directly into pressure.

Ghost Face's three perks

He brings three teachables, all still unchanged on live.

Furtive Chase. After hooking the Obsession, you gain Undetectable and +10% Haste for 14 / 16 / 18 seconds. When the Obsession is unhooked by another Survivor, the Obsession status transfers to the rescuer.

I'm All Ears. Whenever a Survivor performs a rushed vault within 48 metres, their aura is revealed for 8 seconds. Cooldown 60 / 45 / 30 seconds.

Thrilling Tremors. After picking up a Survivor, all generators not currently being repaired are blocked for 16 seconds and highlighted in white. Cooldown 40 / 35 / 30 seconds.

Thrilling Tremors is the one that travels — it is an information perk disguised as a slowdown perk, and the white auras tell you where nobody is, which is where everybody is. Prestiging Ghost Face pushes all three into every other Killer's Bloodweb, one tier per prestige. For where they land against the wider pool, see our Killer perk tier list for Patch 10.1.2a.

Four Ghost Face builds that work on 10.1.2a

These are editorial recommendations built on the verified numbers above, not BHVR data.

The reveal-proof build. Telephoto Lens + Chewed Pen. Any Survivor who successfully reveals you goes Oblivious for a full minute, and downed Survivors take three times as long to reveal you while you patrol their body. This is the build for anyone who keeps getting spotted and hates it.

The gen-denial build. Driver's License + Headline Cut-Outs, with Thrilling Tremors. You stalk faster, you mark the repairer, the gen loses 20% and locks for 15 seconds, and the moment you pick someone up every unattended gen is blocked and lit up. It is pressure stacked on pressure. Pair with the regression options in our generator regression perk rankings.

The chase-snowball build. Drop-Leg Knife Sheath + Cinch Straps, with Furtive Chase. Marking grants Haste, missed attacks no longer cost you Night Shroud, and hooking the Obsession gives another 10% Haste plus Undetectable. Everything feeds the next chase.

The new-player build. Cinch Straps + Walleye's Matchbook. Nothing fancy: your power forgives your misses and comes back faster while you learn where the reveal angles actually are. Ghost Face's skill floor is low but his skill ceiling is in the leaning, and you cannot learn leaning while your power is permanently on cooldown. If you want a wider starting loadout, our best Killer and Survivor builds roundup covers the general-purpose four-perk sets.

How do you counter Ghost Face as a Survivor?

The reveal mechanic is the whole counterplay, and it is more precise than most players realise.

To reveal him, you must see at least 30% of his character model in the central part of your screen while he is within 32 metres, held for 1.5 seconds. Succeed and you force him out of Stealth Mode, disable his ability to keep stalking you, trigger Killer Instinct on him for 4 seconds, and put a marker on his HUD showing the direction you revealed him from.

The precise geometry, from the wiki's own power trivia:

  • Reveal range: 32 metres
  • Reveal time: 1.5 seconds, progressing and regressing at ±1 per second
  • Visibility zone: 60% of the screen horizontally, 90% vertically
  • Minimum in-zone coverage: 0.05% — essentially, if he is centred, he is seen
  • Minimum out-of-zone coverage: 10% — he can still be revealed off-centre if he is close enough to fill your view
  • Minimum pixel visibility: 30% of his model

Two behaviours follow directly from those numbers. First, reveal progress regresses rather than resets — since Patch 5.7.0, losing line of sight for half a second no longer wipes your progress, so a stuttering look at him still accumulates. Second, you do not need him centred if he is close, because the 10% out-of-zone rule catches him when he fills your screen.

And the hard limit: once you are Marked, you cannot reveal him at all for those 60 seconds. Marking is not just a down — it is the removal of your counterplay.

The rest of the counter is positional. In a thread on r/deadbydaylight this week asking exactly this question, the most useful reply in the thread was blunt about it: "His robes do make a bit of a swishing and swooshing noise so you can hear him when hes close but your eyes are the best weapon against him." That is mechanically correct — Patch 3.0.1 removed the proximity sound emitted during Night Shroud and left only the cloth rustle as an audio tell. Another player in the same thread gave the practical version: position yourself on gens so you are awkward to stalk, stay near resources when you are being stalked, and if you are at 99% stalk, take the M1 deliberately rather than get caught Exposed later.

Spine Chill and Premonition: what is live, and what is only PTB

This is where current guides are going wrong, and it came up in that same Reddit thread as a straight disagreement between players.

On live Patch 10.1.2a:

  • Spine Chill activates whenever the Killer is within 36 metres and has clear line of sight on you. It lights its icon and increases your action speeds for blessing, cleansing, gate-opening, healing, repairing, sabotaging, unhooking and unlocking by 2 / 4 / 6%, lingering 0.5 seconds after line of sight or range is lost.
  • Premonition projects a 45° cone in the direction you are looking with a range of 36 metres and triggers an audio cue when it detects the Killer. Cooldown 60 / 45 / 30 seconds.

In the 10.2.0 PTB — not live, do not plan around it yet:

  • Spine Chill is reworked. Range goes to 40 metres, the action-speed bonus is removed entirely, and it instead stops you screaming for 12 seconds and makes you vault +10% faster for 12 seconds — on a 40 / 35 / 30 second cooldown it never had before.
  • Premonition gains an aura reveal of 3 seconds on top of the audio cue, drops to 32 metres, only works while you are not being chased, and its cooldown is raised to 70 / 65 / 60 seconds.

So both sides of that Reddit argument were half right. Spine Chill does still work as described on live. Premonition's cooldown is being increased in the PTB — from 30 seconds to 60 at tier three — but it is also gaining the Killer's aura, which is a far better anti-stealth tool than a sound cue ever was. Against a stalker who has to hold still to stalk, three seconds of aura is a lot.

Nothing in the 10.2.0 PTB touches Ghost Face's own three perks or Night Shroud. Our full breakdown of all 58 perk changes in the PTB covers the rest.

Ghost Face in 2v8

In 2v8 trials he gets an Innate Skill that modifies Night Shroud: +20% recharge rate, +10% movement speed while Night Shroud is active, +15% stalk rate while stalking — and one compensating nerf, Marked Survivors' Exposed duration is halved to 30 seconds.

He was the third licensed Killer added to the mode. Where he lands against the rest of the roster is in our DBD Killer tier list for September 2026.

FAQ

Is Ghost Face in DBD the Scream killer? No. Only the mask is licensed, from the costume company Fun World. Danny Johnson is a BHVR-original character with no connection to the Scream films, though his knife wipe animation is an intentional tribute.

Can you buy Ghost Face with Iridescent Shards? No. Shards only buy Original — non-licensed — Characters at 9,000 IS, or 4,500 and 2,250 for older ones. Ghost Face is classed as licensed and costs 500 Auric Cells or $4.99.

How long does it take Ghost Face to mark you? About 4.5 seconds of uninterrupted stalking at the default 22.5 points per second, or roughly 2.2 seconds if he is leaning behind cover, which doubles the rate to 45 pts/s.

How do you reveal Ghost Face? Keep at least 30% of his model in the central part of your screen while he is within 32 metres, for 1.5 seconds. Progress regresses rather than resets if you look away, and he can still be revealed off-centre if he occupies at least 10% of your view.

Why can't I reveal Ghost Face? Because you are Marked. Marking suppresses the reveal ability for the full 60 seconds of the Exposed state. It can also be an add-on: Chewed Pen and Lasting Perfume raise reveal time to 3 seconds for Survivors who are dying or hooked.

Is Ghost Face better than Myers for stalking? Different. Ghost Face has no distance efficiency penalty, so he stalks at the same rate from 40 metres as from 10, while The Shape stalks more slowly from range.

When was Ghost Face last changed? Patch 9.6.1 on 5 May 2026, which increased his crouched movement speed from 3.8 m/s to 4.0 m/s. He is untouched in the 10.2.0 PTB.

Where this leaves you

Ghost Face is a cheap Killer who has been buffed five times since June 2023 and whose counterplay is a precise camera exercise most Survivors have never actually learned. If you play him, run anti-reveal add-ons and stop treating the lean prompt as decoration. If you play against him, remember the two numbers that matter: 32 metres and 1.5 seconds — and that once you are Marked, neither of them helps you any more.
