Diablo 4 Call to Arms Runeword Season 15: Craft CtA & Level Faster

TL;DR: How do you craft Call to Arms in Diablo 4 Season 15?

Combine Amn + Ral + Mal + Ist + Ohm with a compatible Common white weapon or off-hand in the Horadric Cube. While a Shout affects you, CtA's special power grants +5 skill ranks, +15%[+] Maximum Life, and +15%[x] Maximum Primary Resource. It doesn't grant a separate Battle Orders skill or a direct XP bonus; its leveling value comes from stronger combat performance. Recipe and item effects.

Call to Arms rewards a setup that keeps fighting under a Shout. Craft it without solving that part, and you're leaving its defining bonuses idle between pulls.

This guide covers the five-rune recipe, eligible bases, upgrade costs, Lac versus Ohm, and how to judge whether CtA actually improves your leveling runs. It covers Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy, with sources checked on October 10, 2026. Blizzard's official season overview provides the seasonal and progression context; the item tables below use current rune databases.

Does Diablo 4 Call to Arms grant Battle Orders?

No. The Season 15 item has a conditional Shout bonus, rather than a Battle Orders skill grant. Its listed effects distinguish ordinary equipment affixes from three extra benefits that require an active Shout. There is no Battle Orders cast button or experience-gain affix in that description. CtA tooltip breakdown.

That distinction changes the build. A Barbarian can work CtA into a rotation with native Shouts. Other eligible classes need a way to receive a Shout effect, such as an appropriate Invocation rune.

The familiar CtA name makes old Battle Orders advice tempting. Use the Diablo IV tooltip as your checklist: can you equip the item, can you activate its condition, and does that condition stay active while you're killing monsters?

Don't budget around permanent bonuses just because the item is equipped.

How do you craft CtA in the Horadric Cube?

Gather these six ingredients

You need one each of Amn, Ral, Mal, Ist, and Ohm, plus one compatible Common white base. That is five runes and one equipment item.

Eligible bases are one-handed Axes, Daggers, Flails, Maces, Scythes, Swords, and Wands, plus Focuses and Totems. Choose a type your character can equip. Spiritborn cannot use CtA's listed bases. Mobalytics recipe and compatibility list.

A two-handed weapon or shield isn't a substitute. The item type matters as much as having the correct runes.

Transmute the equipment and runes together

  • Open the Horadric Cube.
  • Insert the compatible Common white base.
  • Add one of each required rune.
  • Select Transmute to create Call to Arms.
  • Inspect the result before changing your equipped setup.

These are Cube ingredients, so you don't need a weapon with five sockets. The runes can be inserted in any order; the combination determines the craft. Game8 crafting instructions.

For an Ancestral CtA, use an Ancestral Common base. Ancestral and Common describe different properties: an orange Ancestral Legendary still isn't the white base this recipe needs. Base-quality requirements.

For an alt, check the finished item's required level before planning around it. CtA shouldn't be treated as a guaranteed starting weapon.

What stats does Call to Arms give?

Separate the always-equipped affixes from the Shout-dependent power. That makes the tooltip much easier to evaluate.

Stat or effectListed valueCondition
Weapon Damage+200–250Equipment affix
All Skills+1 rankEquipment affix
Damage+40%[x]Equipment affix
Shout Skills+5 ranksEquipment affix
Attack Speed+40%Equipment affix
Additional ranks to all Skills+5 ranksWhile affected by a Shout
Maximum Life+15%[+]While affected by a Shout
Maximum Primary Resource+15%[x]While affected by a Shout

These are the listed unupgraded affixes and power, not a promise of identical weapon DPS across every base. Helltides item data.

The Life bonus is marked additive. Don't read it as a guaranteed 15% increase to your final displayed health after every other modifier.

The resource bonus increases capacity, not resource generation. If your build already struggles to refill its resource, a larger pool alone won't repair the rotation.

Where do you get the runes, and which can you upgrade?

Farm toward the missing ingredient

Helltides lists Kurast Undercity and Waking Nightmares as major rune sources, with Greater Tribute of Harmony as an option for greater-rune rewards. The Countess is another documented legacy-rune farming target. None of those descriptions guarantees the specific rune you need on each run. Rune farming options, Countess and legacy runes.

Check your stash before starting another farming session. A spare pair of Vex runes might already solve your missing Ohm.

Use the relevant upgrade recipes

Each recipe below produces one rune.

Rune you needHoradric Cube inputs
Ral3 Tal
Amn3 Thul + 1 Chipped Topaz
Ist2 Mal + 1 Flawless Amethyst
Vex2 Ist + 1 Flawless Ruby
Ohm2 Vex + 1 Flawless Emerald

The published upgrade ladder has a break before Mal: don't assume a pile of Sol runes can be promoted straight into it. Rune-upgrade recipes.

Here is the useful shopping math. Starting entirely from Mal, crafting one Ist and one Ohm, while reserving the one Mal CtA itself consumes, requires:

  • 11 Mal
  • 5 Flawless Amethysts
  • 2 Flawless Rubies
  • 1 Flawless Emerald

That's calculated from the successive recipes above, through several separate transmutes. You still need Amn, Ral, and the base item. Existing Ist, Vex, or Ohm runes reduce that total.

Keep the recipe's final ingredients aside before upgrading surplus runes. Turning your last required Ist into Vex is an irritating way to discover you're still one ingredient short.

How do you activate CtA on a Barbarian or another class?

Barbarian: build around your existing Shout rotation

Use a Shout that fits your build, then attack during its active window. CtA checks whether a Shout affects you; equipping the weapon doesn't satisfy that condition by itself.

Watch your buff bar through an ordinary pack and an elite fight. If the Shout expires before the dangerous part, adjust your timing before committing more materials to the item.

Avoid spending your whole buff window running toward enemies. Activate close enough to use it, while respecting whatever defensive timing your build needs.

Other eligible classes: compare Lac and Ohm

The socketed rune system pairs a Ritual rune, which generates Offering, with an Invocation rune, which spends it. That's separate from the Cube recipe used to make CtA. Blizzard's explanation of the rune system.

Two relevant Invocation runes call Barbarian Shout skills:

Invocation runeOffering requiredListed cooldownBase effect durationInvoked skill
Lac4001 second3 secondsChallenging Shout
Ohm6002 seconds6 secondsWar Cry

Both list increased duration as their Overflow benefit. These are current Season 15 values, distinct from the older system-explanation article. Lac database entry, Ohm database entry.

Choose a Ritual condition your build fulfills naturally. A trigger that rarely happens during your normal attacks makes a poor foundation for CtA.

Lac has the lower Offering threshold and supplies a defensive Shout. Ohm offers a longer base duration. The cooldown isn't the activation interval: a one-second cooldown doesn't mean Lac automatically casts every second. You still need enough Offering.

Also reserve your runes correctly. The Ohm consumed in crafting CtA cannot simultaneously sit in your socketed rune pair. If Ohm is your chosen trigger, budget another copy.

How can CtA make leveling faster?

CtA can improve combat throughput and survivability. Whether that translates into faster levels depends on what currently slows you down.

Fix the part of the run that costs time

If you repeatedly stop to recover or struggle through elite packs, test whether CtA's active bonuses reduce those interruptions. If ordinary enemies already die immediately, more damage may do little for the time spent traveling.

For a fresh character, keep progressing while you assemble the ingredients. Chasing one missing high rune can cost more time than the eventual upgrade saves. For a character already farming Paragon, compare CtA against your current equipment in the activity you actually repeat.

Combine the item with your progression systems

The Undercity is worth examining because it can serve rune farming while its War Plans upgrades support experience gains. Blizzard's Season 15 notes state: “Doubled the number of Experience Orbs spawned by the Jade Epiphany Undercity node.” Official Season 15 notes.

That increase belongs to the named node. It isn't a CtA bonus, and it doesn't mean every Undercity run awards twice the total XP.

Build your route around modifiers you have actually unlocked. A guide showing a developed War Plans setup won't describe the experience of a fresh character with those upgrades missing.

Compare complete runs, including downtime

Use the same activity and difficulty for a few runs with each setup. Record completion time, deaths, and time spent waiting for resources or buffs. Keep other gear changes out of the comparison.

Pick the setup that completes the route consistently faster. A large damage number during one Shout isn't enough evidence.

If you measure XP, include travel, resets, and inventory stops. Ignoring those makes a farming route look better than it feels over a full evening.

Should you craft CtA before Spirit?

I'd prioritize CtA when Shout uptime is already reliable. Without that foundation, compare Spirit first.

Spirit uses Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn and lists +5 to All Skills without a Shout requirement. Those ingredients also avoid CtA's Mal, Ist, and Ohm requirements. Spirit recipe and effects.

That doesn't make Spirit universally better. CtA brings its own damage, attack speed, Shout ranks, and conditional defensive benefits. The sensible choice depends on the equipment you're replacing and how the build plays between activations.

Keep any item essential to your build's function in the comparison. Extra ranks won't compensate for removing the effect that makes your rotation work. The full Diablo 4 Season 15 Runeword guide covers the wider crafting options.

FAQ

Do I need a five-socket weapon to craft Call to Arms? No. Put the compatible Common white item and all five runes into the Horadric Cube. Sockets aren't required for this craft, a point that also comes up in players' crafting questions.

Why won't the Horadric Cube craft my Runeword? Check the base's rarity and equipment type, then count the ingredients. CtA needs a supported white base and one each of Amn, Ral, Mal, Ist, and Ohm. A Rare or Legendary base won't work.

Can I make an Ancestral Call to Arms? Yes. Use an Ancestral Common base of a compatible type. Check the resulting item's equipment and level requirements before planning an alt's loadout around it.

Can non-Barbarians use Call to Arms? Yes, if their class can equip a supported base. Lac and Ohm provide ways to invoke Shout skills through the rune system. Spiritborn is excluded by CtA's equipment compatibility.

Does Call to Arms give Battle Orders or bonus experience? Its Season 15 tooltip grants extra benefits while a Shout affects you. It lists neither a separate Battle Orders skill nor an XP modifier. Any leveling improvement comes through your build's performance.

Should Call to Arms be my first expensive Runeword? Only if it solves a real weakness and you can maintain its Shout condition. Players weighing their first Barbarian Runeword face the same trade-off: choose for your current build and available equipment, then compare alternatives before consuming high runes.
