White gear deserves a second look in Season of Hell's Legacy. A chest you would normally leave on the floor can become Enigma, while a modest pile of lower runes can produce an early upgrade without touching your Ber stash. How do Season 15 Runewords work?

Legacy Runewords create equipment. The familiar socket system combines a Ritual Rune and an Invocation Rune to trigger an effect through Offering. Those are separate operations: putting Jah and Ith into sockets will not turn a chest into Enigma. Socketed Runeword mechanics.

Craft your first item in the Horadric Cube

Once you've unlocked the Cube through the Lord of Hatred campaign:

• Choose a recipe and a base your character can equip.
• Use a Common white item of the required type.
• Put the base and every required rune into the Cube, including duplicate copies.
• Check that the combination enables Transmute, then craft.

A hidden recipe can display ???. That label alone doesn't mean the combination is broken. Count ingredients carefully: Infinity needs two Ber runes, and Phoenix needs two Vex. Crafting instructions.

Which white base should you keep?

The base's Item Power carries into the finished item, and an Ancestral white base produces an Ancestral Runeword. Keep suitable bases while farming, especially for a craft that will consume your only high runes. Check your loot-filter rules if Common items aren't appearing. Base quality rules.

For an endgame weapon, inspect the base before admiring the rune collection. For a leveling item, consider whether you'll replace it soon. Spending Jah on a temporary chest is a choice you should make deliberately.

Which other weapon bases can you use?

The documented alternatives help you avoid crafting equipment your class can't wear:

• Call to Arms and Strength: one-handed axes, daggers, flails, maces, scythes, swords, wands, focuses, and totems.
• Spirit and Phoenix: the same choices, plus shields.
• Edge and Infinity: two-handed axes, maces, swords, and scythes; polearms, glaives, quarterstaves, staves, bows, and crossbows.
• Insight: staves, bows, crossbows, glaives, polearms, quarterstaves, and two-handed scythes.

Which six Runewords should you consider crafting first?

These are practical starting points, chosen for ingredient cost and usefulness. Your existing equipment still decides whether a craft is an upgrade.

1. Stealth: an inexpensive chest

Tal and Eth make Stealth accessible through the lower rune ladder. Its listed bonuses include 25% Attack Speed, 25% Movement Speed, and 15% Damage Reduction. That's a useful package when your chest slot is weak. Stealth affix data.

Do not craft it expecting Teleport. Blizzard's September 17 hotfix removed the bug that gave Stealth Enigma's power after combining three Ancestral Stealth armors. Older database tooltips can still show that effect. Blizzard Hotfix 2.

2. Lore: a straightforward helm upgrade

Lore combines +2 to All Skills, 25 Maximum Resource, and 10% Damage Reduction. Compare those against your current helm's contribution to the build. Ort and Sol are easier ingredients to plan around than a recipe demanding multiple high runes. Lore stats.

3. Spirit: skill ranks without Ber

Spirit offers +5 to All Skills and 25–35% Attack Speed. Its four ingredients all belong to the lower upgrade chain. That makes it an attractive craft to examine before saving everything for Enigma. Remember that the base determines which equipment slot it occupies. Spirit stats and variants.

4. Enigma: mobility with a resource bill

Enigma brings +2 to All Skills and 45% Movement Speed, then converts Evade into Sorcerer's Teleport at a listed cost of 33 Primary Resource. Check your resource recovery before building around repeated teleports. Movement feels less impressive when you arrive unable to attack. Enigma stats.

5. Grief: evaluate it after the hotfix

Grief adds a listed 750–1,000 flat Weapon Damage. Its direct hits also add Poisoning damage. Grief item data.

Blizzard's September 22 hotfix says: “Fixed an issue where the 5-set bonus for the Old Mountain Talisman combined with Grief resulted in unintended damage.” Judge the weapon using current performance; an earlier damage showcase may include that interaction. Blizzard Hotfix 4.

6. Infinity: commit only when the slot fits

Infinity needs two Ber, plus Mal and Ist. Its power makes nearby enemies Vulnerable and increases the damage they take from you. Before spending those runes, check how replacing your two-handed weapon affects the whole build, including any power you're giving up. Infinity recipe and effect.

How do you upgrade runes in the Horadric Cube?

There are 14 documented fixed upgrade recipes. The lower chain stops at Sol; there is no documented Sol-to-Mal conversion. Reserve the ingredients for your intended Runeword before upgrading duplicates. Community-tested upgrade list.

What does crafting Enigma's high runes actually cost?

Starting entirely from Lo, Enigma's Jah and Ber require 6 Lo, 3 Grand Topazes, and 1 Grand Sapphire. You still need Ith and the chest.

Here's the arithmetic: four Lo become two Ber; those two Ber become Jah. Another two Lo produce the Ber used directly in Enigma. These are calculated crafting requirements, not drop-rate estimates.

Starting all the way back at Mal, one Jah costs 64 Mal plus the intermediate gems: Mal → Ist → Vex → Ohm → Lo → Ber → Jah contains six doubling steps. A direct high-rune drop saves a substantial part of that chain. Don't convert your last Ber into Jah if doing so leaves the final recipe short.

Gem quality matters too. A Flawless Topaz does not satisfy a recipe asking for a Grand Topaz. Keep the exact gems beside the reserved runes, and check each intermediate craft separately. The Cube ladder gives you a predictable destination; it doesn't make the ingredients interchangeable.

Where should you farm Runeword ingredients?

Run the Countess for Legacy Runes

The Countess is a documented source of the seasonal runes. Find the Forgotten Tower in Rotspill Delta, Hawezar, then descend to floor 5. Focus on finding each downward entrance instead of clearing every room. Countess location and route.

Use Undercity Tributes for targeted rune rewards

Blizzard also fixed missing Horadric Cube material rewards from their associated Undercity Tributes on September 22. That fix concerns Cube materials; it does not establish a guaranteed Ber drop. Official hotfix.

Finish a recipe before changing farms

Write down the missing ingredient, then choose the activity. Need seasonal runes? Start with Waking Nightmares. Need broader rune stock? Use your suitable Harmony Tributes. Missing one conversion ingredient? Check the Cube ladder before committing to another session.

Keep a separate stash area for the next craft: base, runes, and gems together. Upgrade only the surplus. This simple habit prevents a familiar mistake: turning your final Tal into Ral, then discovering that Spirit still needs Tal.

Compare farms using useful ingredients per session. A run that showers you with gear can still leave the recipe untouched. Include travel, sorting, and failed attempts in that comparison. If your current difficulty makes every boss a struggle, try a faster setting and compare the actual haul before committing your remaining Tributes.

FAQ

Why does my Runeword recipe show question marks? These are hidden Cube recipes, so a ??? label can be normal. Check the white base type, every rune, and duplicate quantities. A disabled Transmute button means you should recheck the combination. Crafting reference.

Do I need sockets to craft Enigma? You create it inside the Cube using a white chest and Jah, Ith, Ber. You don't assemble this Unique through the two-socket Ritual/Invocation system. Enigma crafting explanation.

Can I make an Ancestral Runeword? Yes. Use an Ancestral Common base of the correct type. Its quality determines the resulting Runeword's Ancestral status. Base-item rules.

Why did my Stealth chest stop teleporting? That was an unintended Enigma interaction fixed on September 17. Repeating the three-Stealth craft isn't a route to the power. Use Enigma's own recipe if Teleport is your goal. Official Stealth fix.
