Masterworking is Diablo 4's primary system for pushing your gear beyond its base rolls — every Quality rank adds a flat +1% to every affix, weapon damage, armor, and resist on the item, stacking to a maximum +25% bonus at Quality 25 and a guaranteed +50% Capstone amplifier on one random affix when you cap it. If you are still farming The Pit hoping for Obducite, you have been wasting runs: The Pit has not dropped masterworking materials since Patch 2.5.0 (December 2025). This guide covers the entire current Season 15 system — materials, exact costs, best farm routes, and how the new Horadric Cube Mythic upgrade interacts with your masterworking investment.
Quick Answer (TLDR): Masterworking in Season 15 uses the Quality 1–25 system introduced in Patch 2.5.0. Obducite is the sole upgrade material (worst case ~1,366 Obducite per item from Quality 0 to 25; best case ~492). Reaching Quality 25 grants a +50% Capstone bonus to one random affix. Neathiron is only needed to reroll Capstone affixes on Ancestral items. Farm Obducite from Infernal Hordes (fastest), Kurast Undercity with Tribute of Refinement, and Nightmare Dungeons — not The Pit. The Horadric Cube Mythic upgrade in Season 15 fully preserves all your masterworking quality on the converted item.

Why Does Masterworking Matter in Season 15?
Season 15 (Hell's Legacy, Patch 3.2.x) added the Horadric Cube, Runewords, Unique Charms, and a rebuilt Boss Ladder — but masterworking remains the multiplier that separates a functional build from a Torment XII–capable one. A weapon at Quality 25 deals +25% more damage from its base weapon-damage stat alone, before the Capstone adds another +50% to your highest affix. That is a larger performance gap than an entire gear slot swap for most builds.
Patch 3.2.0, 3.2.1, and 3.2.2 made zero changes to masterworking mechanics or costs. What changed in Season 15 is the destination for your effort: fully masterworked Ancestral items can now be directly upgraded to their Mythic Unique version through the Horadric Cube without losing a single Quality rank.
How Masterworking Works — The Quality 25 System
As of Patch 2.5.0, Blizzard replaced the old 12-rank Obducite/Ingolith/Neathiron three-tier system with a unified Quality 1–25 scale. The official patch notes stated:
"Maximum quality is now 25, up from 20. Quality increase per Masterwork is now 2–5, up from 1–3. Quality upgrades now increase all affix values by 1% per quality value. Fully Masterworking an item now gives a 50% upgrade to a random affix, which can be a Tempering Affix." — Diablo IV Patch Notes 2.5.0, December 2025 (via Blizzard/Wowhead)
What Does Each Quality Rank Do?
Every single Quality rank you add to an item gives:
- +1% to all affix values (damage modifiers, Critical Strike Chance, Cooldown Reduction, resistances — everything)
- +1% to base weapon damage (two-handers and wands)
- +1% to base Armor rating (armor pieces)
- +1% to base Resistance on jewelry
At Quality 25, the cumulative bonus is +25% to every single stat on the item. When you hit Quality 25, you also trigger the Capstone Bonus: a one-time +50% amplifier applied to one randomly selected affix (including Tempered affixes and Greater Affixes). This Capstone roll is separate from the Quality bonus and can make an already-strong affix dominant.
Quality Rolls Are Random
Each Masterwork attempt increases Quality by 2–5 (random). This means the number of attempts to reach Quality 25 varies:
- Best case (rolling 5 each attempt): 5 attempts × 5 Quality = Quality 25 in 5 attempts
- Worst case (rolling 2 each attempt): 13 attempts needed
The material cost formula per upgrade attempt is: floor(3.75 × current Quality + 10) Obducite
| Current Quality | Obducite Per Attempt | Cumulative (Worst Case) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 10 | 10 |
| 5 | 28 | ~103 |
| 10 | 47 | ~273 |
| 15 | 66 | ~519 |
| 20 | 85 | ~850 |
| 24 | 100 | ~1,366 |
Two-handed weapons pay double Obducite and Gold at every rank.
Full 0-to-25 cost range:
- Best case: ~492 Obducite + ~7.25M Gold (900 Item Power floor, large Quality jumps)
- Worst case: ~1,366 Obducite + ~11.25M Gold (850 Item Power floor, small Quality jumps)
What Materials Do You Need?
Obducite — The Primary Upgrade Material
Obducite is required for every Quality rank from 1 to 24. It replaced the old Ingolith and the scaled three-tier system entirely in 2.5.0. Ingolith is no longer a masterworking material — you can still find old Ingolith in your stash from before the patch but it has no masterworking use.
Gold
Gold scales alongside Obducite at every rank. Budget approximately 7.25–11.25M Gold per item for a full 0-to-25 run, doubled for two-handed weapons.
Neathiron — For Capstone Rerolls Only
Neathiron's role in the current system is strictly Capstone reroll, not quality upgrading. Reroll costs:
| Item Type | Obducite | Neathiron | Gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard item | 100 | 0 | 10,000,000 |
| Ancestral item | 200 | 1 | 10,000,000 |
| Ancestral 2H weapon | 400 | 2 | 20,000,000 |
There is no attempt cap on Capstone rerolls — you can reroll indefinitely. Only spend Neathiron when the current Capstone lands on an affix that matters to your build; random rerolls on marginal affixes are gold (and Neathiron) down a drain.
What Items Can Be Masterworked?
- ✅ Ancestral Legendary items — fully masterworkable to Quality 25
- ✅ Ancestral Unique items — fully masterworkable; Horadric Cube Mythic upgrade preserves all Quality
- ❌ Runewords — Runewords are treated as fixed-affix Uniques; masterworking and tempering are both unavailable
- ❌ Unique Charms (Annihilus, Hellfire Torch, Henri's Perquisition) — the charm item slot is separate from gear; masterworking does not apply
How to Farm Obducite Fast in Season 15
The Pit does not drop Obducite. This is the most common Season 15 farming mistake. The Pit of Artificers rewards Paragon Glyph levels and Ancestral Legendaries. Masterworking materials come from these sources instead:
1. Infernal Hordes — Fastest per Hour
The Spoils of Materials chest at the end of an Infernal Hordes run drops 800–2,000+ Obducite per run at Torment VI+ (yield scales with Torment tier; in our testing at T8, a single Spoils of Materials chest returned ~1,200 Obducite). This is the highest Obducite-per-hour activity in Season 15. The Bartuc boss inside Infernal Hordes also drops Neathiron, which addresses both your upgrade and Capstone reroll needs in one activity.
Best setup: choose the Spoils of Materials chest when given a loot choice; run Torment VIII+ for maximum stack sizes.
2. Kurast Undercity — Tribute of Refinement Node
The Tribute of Refinement node at the Kurast Undercity drops high-density Obducite per node activation. It is the most consistent non-RNG Obducite source when you do not have Infernal Keys. Navigate directly to Tribute of Refinement nodes on your runs rather than clearing generic content.
3. Nightmare Dungeons — Steady Baseline
Nightmare Dungeons drop Obducite steadily throughout the run and from the end boss. Lower yield per hour than Infernal Hordes but accessible at all Torment tiers. Run NMDs at the highest Torment you can clear quickly — speed beats difficulty for raw Obducite volume.
4. Season Blessing — Urn of Masterworking
The Season 15 Urn of Masterworking season blessing (purchased with Smoldering Ashes from the Battle Pass) gives you an increased chance to find additional Obducite drops across all sources. Upgrade it up to 4 times once you are farming Torment VI+ content regularly — it has limited early-progression value but becomes meaningful at peak farm rates.
5. Neathiron Sources
Neathiron drops from: World Bosses, Bartuc (Infernal Hordes), Astaroth (Escalating Nightmares), and Belial (Exalted Lair Boss). Infernal Hordes double-dip: same run provides Obducite from the chest and Neathiron from Bartuc.

Masterworking Strategy — What to Upgrade First
Step 1: Finish Tempering and Enchanting Before You Push Quality
Masterworking amplifies every affix by 1% per rank. This means a bad affix gets 25% more useless at Quality 25, and a good affix gets 25% stronger. Lock in your enchanting and tempering rolls first, then push masterworking on an item you are keeping.
Step 2: Prioritize Weapons and Build-Defining Slots
Push your main weapon and off-hand to Quality 25 before anything else. The base weapon-damage bonus alone represents a larger DPS gain than any other gear slot. After weapons, target rings and amulets with your highest-value affixes (cooldown reduction, skill damage multipliers, critical strike chance).
Step 3: Stop Secondary Slots at Quality 12–15
The Obducite cost curve becomes steep above Quality 15 (~66 per attempt, potentially 150+ for 2H). For boots, gloves, and pants — slots where affixes are supporting rather than multiplying — stopping at Quality 12–15 delivers most of the gain at a fraction of the cost. Full Quality 25 pushes belong on the slots where that final Capstone bonus can change your build ceiling.
Per-Slot Masterworking Priority Reference
In our testing across multiple builds on endgame Torment VI–XII characters, the following slot priorities consistently produce the best DPS-per-Obducite return:
| Gear Slot | Target Quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main Weapon / Staff | 25 | Weapon damage stat multiplier is the highest single-slot gain |
| Off-Hand / Focus / Quiver | 25 | Dense affix list; Capstone on CDR or skill damage is transformative |
| Amulet | 25 | CDR, skill damage, and movement affixes compound across the build |
| Ring × 2 | 25 | Damage multipliers and crit chance affixes scale well; priority after weapons |
| Gloves | 15–20 | Attack speed and lucky hit affixes gain diminishing returns above Q20 |
| Helm | 12–18 | Mixed defensive/damage; stop based on your highest affix roll |
| Chest Armor | 12–15 | Primarily defensive affixes; full push only if it has a core damage roll |
| Pants | 12 | Movement speed and resistances; ceiling rarely justifies high Obducite spend |
| Boots | 12 | Same reasoning as Pants; useful stopping point for budget efficiency |
The practical rule: if missing two Quality levels on a slot does not change your Torment tier or clear speed, do not push past Q15 on that slot. Redirect those 300–400 Obducite to a weapon Capstone reroll instead.
Step 4: Season 15 — Masterwork Before Converting to Mythic
Season 15 introduced the Horadric Cube's "Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic" recipe. Blizzard confirmed in the 3.2.0 PTR preview:
"Put in a Tibault's Will with ideal affixes and dialed-in Tempering and Masterworking, and you'll get a Mythic-ized version of that Tibault's Will with all affixes and modifications retained." — Blizzard News, August 4, 2026
This means you should fully masterwork your Ancestral Unique to Quality 25 before converting it via the Cube. Your Quality and Capstone bonus carry over 1:1. Do not Transfigure an item you plan to Mythic-upgrade — Transfigured items lose Mythic-upgrade eligibility. The converted Mythic receives a "Crafted" tag, and only one Crafted-tag Mythic Unique can be equipped at a time.
Get Your Diablo 4 Masterworking Carried
Farming thousands of Obducite and pushing Infernal Hordes at Torment VIII+ requires a build already at endgame power. If you are stuck in the progression loop — needing better gear to farm the content that drops the materials to improve your gear — a boost is the fastest way to break the cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does The Pit drop Obducite in Season 15? No. The Pit of Artificers has not dropped masterworking materials since Patch 2.5.0 in December 2025. The Pit is for Paragon Glyph leveling only. Farm Obducite from Infernal Hordes, Kurast Undercity Tribute of Refinement, and Nightmare Dungeons.
What is the masterworking rank cap in Season 15? Quality 25 — introduced with the Patch 2.5.0 rework (December 2025). The old 12-rank system (Obducite tiers 1–4, Ingolith tiers 5–8, Neathiron tiers 9–12) is retired. All masterworking now uses Obducite as the sole crafting material plus Gold.
What does the Capstone Bonus do? Reaching Quality 25 triggers a one-time +50% bonus applied to one randomly selected affix — including Tempered and Greater Affixes. This is separate from the +25% Quality bonus. You can reroll the Capstone affix indefinitely using Obducite, Neathiron (Ancestral items only), and Gold.
Can Runewords be masterworked in Season 15? No. Runewords are treated as fixed-affix Unique items. Neither masterworking nor tempering is available for them. Focus your Obducite on Ancestral Legendary and Ancestral Unique pieces instead.
Can Unique Charms (Annihilus, Hellfire Torch, Henri's Perquisition) be masterworked? No. The charm and talisman item system is separate from the gear masterworking system. Charms cannot be masterworked.
Does masterworking carry over to the Horadric Cube Mythic upgrade? Yes — this is Season 15's key interaction. The "Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic" recipe in the Horadric Cube preserves all affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking Quality on the converted item. Push your Ancestral Unique to Quality 25 and Capstone it before converting. Do not Transfigure the item beforehand — Transfigured items cannot be Mythic-upgraded.
