Blizzard announced the Patch 3.2.0 PTR on July 30, 2026, and one of its headline additions is a brand-new endgame activity: Challenge Dungeons. These overland-spawned portals drop you into a boss encounter you can crank up to three Torment tiers above your current difficulty — and they scale rewards to match. The PTR runs August 4–11 (PC only), giving players their first taste of what Season 15 will bring before the full launch, expected in late August or early September 2026.
This guide covers everything officially confirmed about Challenge Dungeons in the 3.2.0 PTR, how the difficulty system works, what rewards to expect, and how to stack your current Season 14 character now so you hit the ground running.
Quick answer (TLDR): Challenge Dungeons are a new overworld activity in Diablo 4 Season 15. Random portals spawn while you explore the Overland — step inside, choose your boss difficulty (up to 3 Torment tiers above your current rank), kill the boss, and collect scaled rewards. They are being tested in the 3.2.0 PTR (August 4–11, PC only) ahead of the full Season 15 launch (~late August/early September 2026).

What Are Diablo 4 Challenge Dungeons?
Challenge Dungeons are a new endgame mechanic introduced in Patch 3.2.0 for Season 15. Unlike Nightmare Dungeons (which you open with a Sigil) or Lairs (which require keys), Challenge Dungeons are found in the open world — portals appear spontaneously as you roam the Overland.
Blizzard describes the concept directly in the official PTR announcement: "Challenge Dungeons can be entered through portals that open in the Overland. Enter them to fight against a fearsome boss."
They sit alongside existing endgame pillars — The Pit, Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide, and Lair Bosses — as an on-demand, self-scaling encounter for players who want a quick burst of difficulty and loot without burning a consumable resource like a Sigil or a Lair Key.
Important PTR caveat: Blizzard notes that "the encounters you experience here are built specifically to test the underlying system, and the final Season 15 experience will feature different content." What you fight in the PTR (August 4–11) is a test skeleton, not the full Season 15 version. Expect content, boss types, and rewards to evolve before the live launch.
How to Access Challenge Dungeons
Access is passive by design — you do not craft, buy, or trade for entry. While playing in the Overland (the open-world zones across Sanctuary), portals to Challenge Dungeons will appear at random. Walk in to begin.
This matters for how you farm them: you cannot spam-run Challenge Dungeons by fast-travelling in and out like you can repeat a Pit tier. Spawn timing will depend on how actively you're moving through overland zones, similar to how Helltide Aberrant Cinders and World Boss timers reward consistent zone presence.
Based on the PTR announcement, no specific key, currency, or reputation gate is mentioned for entry. Blizzard's framing — "portals that open in the Overland" — suggests they behave like world events rather than locked activities. However, Torment difficulty restrictions likely apply, similar to Lair Bosses requiring Torment I+ to access the Hoard.
How Does Challenge Dungeon Difficulty Work?
This is the mechanical heart of the system — and it is what separates Challenge Dungeons from most D4 endgame activities.
| Difficulty Option | Torment Offset | Expected Reward Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Your current Torment | Base rewards |
| +1 Tier | Current Torment + 1 | Elevated rewards |
| +2 Tiers | Current Torment + 2 | High rewards |
| +3 Tiers | Current Torment + 3 (maximum) | Maximum rewards |
You choose difficulty without changing your global Torment setting — that separation is the mechanic's real value. If you're farming at Torment VIII, you can opt into a Challenge Dungeon boss at Torment XI — three tiers harder, potentially three tiers more rewarding — without affecting the difficulty of every mob you kill outside. This makes Challenge Dungeons an opt-in skill check: you get access to loot from higher Torment content while spending most of your farm time at a comfortable difficulty.
d4guides.gg summarizes the official PTR notes: "On Torment difficulties you choose how hard the fight should be — up to three Torment tiers above your current difficulty. Crank it up and the rewards scale with you." This matches the Blizzard announcement verbatim.
The entry-level (standard difficulty) is confirmed to match your currently selected Torment. The ceiling is +3 above that. At the current live cap of Torment XII (verified in Season of Reckoning gameplay), a player at T12 would theoretically be capped — but a T9 player could access T12-level content through this system for the first time.
What Rewards Do Challenge Dungeons Drop?
Blizzard's PTR notes do not enumerate specific drop tables for Challenge Dungeons yet — this is typical for PTR content, where loot tuning changes happen up until live launch. What is confirmed:
- Rewards scale with difficulty — higher tier = better loot
- Community coverage ahead of PTR suggests that Soul Splinters (the new socketable item type) will drop from new Season 15 combat activities including Challenge Dungeons and Overland Ambushes — consistent with how seasonal currencies have been gated to seasonal activities in past seasons
- The new Mythic crafting improvements (see section below) will increase Mythic acquisition broadly in Season 15, and Challenge Dungeons are expected to feed into that system
One established pattern from S14 endgame: activities that reward high Torment tiers in D4 typically drop Unique + Mythic Uniques, crafting materials (Obducite, Pandemonium Fragments), Greater Lair Keys, and high-item-level Ancestral gear. Challenge Dungeons at +3 tiers would likely drop at or above the baseline for that Torment level.
Full reward tables will not be definitive until PTR players report data and Blizzard publishes final patch notes. Last updated: August 1, 2026 (pre-PTR). This guide will be updated August 4–11 with live PTR data.
How Do Challenge Dungeons Fit Into Season 15's Endgame Loop?
Challenge Dungeons introduce dynamic difficulty selection as a first-class endgame feature. Here is how they compare to existing S14 activities:
| Activity | Key Required | Difficulty Control | On-Demand? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Challenge Dungeons | None (portal) | +0 to +3 Torment | Passive spawn |
| Nightmare Dungeons | Sigil (crafted) | Fixed to Sigil tier | Yes |
| The Pit | Runeshards | Fixed to opening tier | Yes |
| Lair Bosses | Lair Key | Fixed to current Torment | Yes |
| Helltide | None | Fixed to Torment | Always active |
The no-key entry and self-select difficulty are Challenge Dungeons' defining advantages. For players mid-season who have hit a gear plateau, the +1/+2 tier option is a power-testing tool: fight above your comfort zone in an isolated context, collect stronger loot, iterate your build.
For the highest-end players already farming Torment XII efficiently, the system adds a compact boss format — expect shorter clears than a full Nightmare Dungeon clear, closer to the Lair boss loop.
Soul Splinters — The New Socketable Tied to Season 15 Endgame
While not exclusively a Challenge Dungeon drop, Soul Splinters are being tested alongside them in the 3.2.0 PTR and represent a major new itemization layer. They socket into jewelry, provide resistances, and attach significant trade-off effects:
| Soul Splinter | Resistance | Power | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Splinter of Anguish | Fire | +15–35%[+] Crit + Attack Speed | +30% Resource Costs |
| Splinter of Sin | Lightning | +10–40%[x] Max Health | −30% Max Resource |
| Splinter of Lies | Cold | +40–100% Gold/Mat Drop Rate + 25% XP | Permanently Weakened + Vulnerable |
| Splinter of the Black Soulstone | All Stats (+7–50) | +2–5%[x] dmg per absorbed soul (stacks) | +0.5% dmg taken per soul |
| Splinter of Pain | Poison | +10–40% Damage Reduction | −30% Movement Speed |
| Splinter of the Mother | Physical | Unhindered; Vulnerable touch | Stunned for 4s after 100–250 enemy touches |
| Splinter of Hellfire | All Elements | +40–100%[x] Damage | −100% Crit Chance |
| Splinter of Damnation | Shadow | Elite kill → +1 Monster Power for 10–25s | — |
All 8 varieties scale across Common → Magic → Rare → Legendary → Unique rarity and can be upgraded in the Horadric Cube. The Splinter of Hellfire (+100%[x] damage, zero Crit) and Splinter of Lies (permanent Weakened/Vulnerable on self, +100% drop rates) are the builds-theorycrafting standouts heading into the PTR.

Mythic Crafting Overhaul in 3.2.0
Season 15 brings the most player-requested Mythic crafting change: deterministic Mythic crafting. In Season 14, the Horadric Cube recipe crafted a random Mythic Unique — high cost, high lottery. Not anymore. In 3.2.0:
- Targeted Mythic crafting: the Horadric Cube gains a recipe to craft a specific named Unique directly into its Mythic version — you pick the exact item, pay more mats
- Random option stays: the old random-Mythic recipe remains available as the lower-cost alternative for players chasing any Mythic
- Jeweler slot targeting: the Jeweler can now produce a random item for a specific gear slot (helm, chest, boots, etc.) instead of being locked to set recipes
- Blacksmith Mythic Cache improved: these caches can now drop class-useable Mythic Uniques or Iconic Mythics without the "Crafted" tag — they behave like naturally-dropped items and skip the tag restriction that limited equipped Crafted Mythics to one in earlier patches
Blizzard's statement in the official 3.2.0 PTR announcement: "We've heard your feedback, and we're making further improvements to Mythic Uniques and Iconic Mythics."
Combined with Challenge Dungeons feeding Season 15 materials, this overhaul makes targeted BiS item acquisition meaningfully faster in Season 15.
Up to Ten Legacy Uniques Returning in Season 15
Alongside the new mechanics, up to ten items from Diablo I, II, and III return as permanent additions to D4's item pool. Blizzard's initial PTR announcement referenced nine; the official PTR article and d4guides.gg coverage put the count at ten — subject to confirmation during the PTR. Either way, these are not seasonal-exclusive: they join the standard loot table permanently. Five are usable by all classes; five are class-specific.
The full ten confirmed in the d4guides.gg PTR coverage:
All classes (5): Leoric's Crown (Helm), Nemesis Bracers (Gloves), Ring of Royal Grandeur (Ring), Stone of Jordan (Ring), Squirt's Blouse (Chest — the D3 Squirt's Necklace redesigned as armor).
Mixed classes (5): Arioc's Needle (2H Polearm — Barbarian/Druid/Spiritborn), Henri's Perquisition (Offhand Focus — Sorcerer/Necromancer/Warlock), In-Geom (1H Sword — 6 classes), The Furnace (2H Mace — 5 classes), Messerschmidt's Reaver (2H Axe — 5 classes; this item is coming in Season 15 but will not be testable in the PTR).
Unique affixes stay reminiscent of the originals but are adjusted for current itemization — Leoric's Crown, for example, now counts as Jewelry and boosts the effect of any gem socketed into the helm.
These items are available in the PTR as a preview. Blizzard noted the full list and their stats will be refined based on PTR feedback.
How to Prepare NOW in Season 14 for Challenge Dungeons
Challenge Dungeons reward higher Torment tiers. Your preparation window is the remaining weeks of Season 14 before S15 launches. The single most impactful lever is your Torment level — the higher you are when S15 starts, the harder (and more rewarding) a Challenge Dungeon you can tackle on day one.
Three levers to stack now:
1. Push your Torment rank. Challenge Dungeons at +3 Torment above your base. If you're currently T7, a fully geared +3 run puts you against T10 content. Getting to T10 now means day-one access to T12-tier equivalent loot on day one (and potentially T13+ if Season 15 expands the Torment cap beyond XII). In our Season 14 experience, pushing from T7 to T10 takes roughly 4–6 focused Pit sessions with a solid build — achievable before S15 lands. The Pit (via Artificer's Obelisk) is the most efficient Torment push vehicle.
2. Glyph-level to rank 150. Paragon Glyphs cap at rank 150 and define your damage multipliers. Pit-boosted glyph runs this week compound directly into Season 15 power.
3. Stack Pandemonium Fragments for Mythic crafting going into S15. The Mythic crafting overhaul arrives in S15, but the recipes consume materials. Farming Pandemonium Fragments now (via Corrupted Reaper at high Torment, Helltide, or carrying the Glints of Hope loop) means you have deterministic Mythic crafting material stocked on S15 day one.
Need to reach a higher Torment tier before Season 15 drops? Our team runs fast, efficient carries through The Pit, Lair Bosses, and Helltide to slot you into the Challenge Dungeon bracket you want on day one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Challenge Dungeons in Diablo 4 Season 15? Challenge Dungeons are a new overworld activity arriving in Season 15. Random portals spawn in the Overland; enter one to fight a boss at a difficulty you choose — from your current Torment level up to 3 tiers higher. Rewards scale with the difficulty you select.
When do Challenge Dungeons go live? They are being tested in the 3.2.0 PTR (August 4–11, 2026, PC/Battle.net only). Season 15 — the full live launch — is expected in late August or early September 2026.
Do you need a key or item to enter a Challenge Dungeon? No. Challenge Dungeons spawn as overland portals that open randomly while you explore. No Sigil, key, or consumable is required to enter one.
Can you choose the difficulty of a Challenge Dungeon? Yes. In Torment difficulty you can select from your current Torment tier up to 3 Torment tiers higher. Higher difficulty means greater rewards. The choice is per-dungeon and does not change your global Torment setting.
Is the 3.2.0 PTR content the final version of Challenge Dungeons? No. Blizzard explicitly states that "the final Season 15 experience will feature different content." The PTR tests the underlying difficulty and portal system; boss types, loot tables, and encounter design will be tuned before the live Season 15 launch.
Will Challenge Dungeons drop Soul Splinters? Not officially confirmed yet. Soul Splinters are a new seasonal socketable being tested alongside Challenge Dungeons in the PTR. Blizzard and community coverage suggest they are tied to Season 15 endgame activities including Challenge Dungeons, but drop sources will be finalized closer to S15 launch.
