How do you get and use Marks of Wisdom in Diablo 4 Season 16?

>

On the Season 16 PTR, turn in completed War Plans to earn Marks of Wisdom, then spend them to change nodes in War Plans Tactics and individual Activity trees. You can hold 20 on the PTR. Mrak’s War Plans boost grants 20 Marks for testing. Tyrael’s Boons have a separate bill: 5,000,000 gold per point. These are patch 3.3.0 PTR rules, verified on October 28, 2026. Source: Blizzard’s PTR overview.

Start with your next farming session. Want different activities or rewards? Marks of Wisdom let you reshuffle your War Plans allocations. The trick is keeping three things straight: earning progression points, paying to move them, and adjusting the separate seasonal Boons tree.

Here are both PTR sources, the confirmed limits, how to respec, and where I’d spend Marks when chasing an upgrade. Blizzard hasn’t filled in every detail, including the normal payout per completed plan. Those gaps stay explicit below.

Are Marks of Wisdom available in the live season yet?

As of October 28, Marks of Wisdom are a Season 16 PTR feature. Blizzard’s test runs from October 27 at 10 a.m. PDT to November 3 at 10 a.m. PST. That’s the testing window, not Season 16’s launch date. The announcement describes these as upcoming changes and says player feedback will lead to adjustments. Official test schedule.

You need the PTR client. Searching the regular game for Marks? Switch clients before trying the steps below.

The listed build is PC-only. Our Diablo 4 Season 16 PTR guide covers installation and the wider update. Treat these caps and costs as test values; they aren’t guaranteed to survive into the finished season.

What are Marks of Wisdom used for?

Marks of Wisdom replace gold when reallocating nodes in War Plans Tactics and the individual Activity trees. Tactics changes how likely particular activities and reward categories are to appear in your War Plans. Blizzard confirms support for both Seasonal and Eternal content. War Plans changes.

Activities earn Tactics progression points. Turning in a completed plan earns the currency you spend to move those points.

Marks don’t grant extra allocations. Here’s what Blizzard has actually put numbers on:

MechanicConfirmed PTR valueWhat it means
Marks of Wisdom holding cap20Your currency balance has a limit
Mrak’s War Plans boost20 MarksA testing shortcut to a full balance
Points in a Tactics Activity nodeUp to 3Invest to favor an activity type
Points in a Tactics Reward nodeUp to 3Invest to favor a reward category

Tyrael’s Boons point maximum132A separate seasonal progression pool
Tyrael’s Boons refund price5,000,000 gold per pointThis tree still charges gold

Every value above comes from Blizzard’s PTR overview, which states: “In the PTR, Marks of Wisdom are capped at 20.” Official currency cap.

That’s a holding cap. The wording doesn’t describe a daily earning limit.

How do you get Marks of Wisdom?

Turn in completed War Plans

Finish a War Plan and turn it in. Blizzard identifies that hand-in as the trigger for awarding Marks. Marks of Wisdom acquisition.

See the plan through:

  • Complete the activities required by your selected War Plan.
  • Finish the plan and turn it in.
  • Check your Marks balance, then decide whether to adjust your allocation.

Don’t confuse an activity’s progression reward with the currency from a completed plan. If you stop after one activity without finishing the whole plan, you haven’t reached the confirmed Marks payout step.

The amount remains unspecified. Blizzard’s overview gives no ordinary turn-in payout, difficulty modifier, or Marks-per-hour benchmark. Any dungeon speed ranking would be guesswork right now. Pick plans you can finish consistently and track each hand-in.

For a clean earnings check, record your balance before and after a turn-in while you’re below the cap. Count Mrak’s grant separately. At a full balance, you can’t tell what an ordinary plan would have awarded.

Get 20 Marks immediately through Mrak on the PTR

Want to test right away? Blizzard lists a boost that unlocks and maximizes War Plans, grants 20 Marks of Wisdom, and lets you skip the initial earning loop. PTR testing features.

Grab it here:

  • Enter the 3.3.0 PTR through the Battle.net client.
  • Find Mrak, the PTR vendor beside the main waypoint in major cities.
  • Look under the progression boosts for Unlock and Max War Plans.
  • Use the boost, then open War Plans to check the available trees and your currency.

This is the quickest documented way to experiment with a full Marks balance on the test realm. Remember where that balance came from: the 20-Mark grant is a PTR boost. Blizzard hasn’t said a normal War Plan pays that much.

Testing Tyrael’s Boons as well? Create a Seasonal test character. Blizzard specifically directs testers to Seasonal characters for seasonal themes.

How do you spend Marks to respec War Plans?

Open Activities, then choose War Plans Tactics or the individual Activity tree you want to adjust. Inspect an allocated node. Read its refund cost before removing it. Blizzard’s Tactics screenshot shows this interface with Greater Helltide selected. Official interface preview.

I’d handle the respec in this order:

  • Decide what you need from the next farming session.
  • Pick an existing allocation you can give up.
  • Read that node’s displayed refund cost.
  • Refund the allocation, then spend the returned progression points on your new choice.

Marks pay for the change; progression points buy the allocation. Keep those two jobs straight in the menu.

The development screenshot lists a refund cost of 1 for the selected Greater Helltide node. That documents one example, not the price of every node across every tree. The image is also marked as unfinished development content. Check the current client before committing to a larger respec. Blizzard’s Tactics screenshot.

Which War Plans nodes should you prioritize?

Choose the upgrade you’re chasing alongside the activities you’re willing to repeat. I’d settle both together. Favoring a reward does little for you if you hate the plans you keep accepting.

Favor activities your build handles comfortably

An Activity node takes up to 3 points, making that activity more likely to appear. Invest at least 1 point in Helltides or Nightmare Dungeons and you also unlock a choice favoring Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons, respectively. Official Tactics rules.

For Marks, I’d favor reliable completions. A harder activity that repeatedly stalls your plan gets in the way of the hand-in. That recommendation follows the earning requirement; it doesn’t mean easier difficulties pay more.

Take the advanced option because you want to play that content. Its presence in the tree doesn’t make it the fastest Marks farm.

Match rewards to your current shortage

Blizzard’s reward preferences cover equipment, upgrading resources, activity access items, and Talisman items. Each Reward node accepts up to 3 points. Available reward categories.

What’s blocking your next upgrade?

  • Missing a gear upgrade: consider Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry.
  • Short on materials: consider Obducite, Salvage, Gems, or Horadric Cube Materials.
  • Preparing another activity: consider Activity Keys.
  • Working on your Talisman: consider Talisman Items.
  • Short on gold: consider the Gold reward node.

You’re setting preferences here. None guarantees a specific drop. Tactics makes your chosen content and rewards more likely to appear, but Blizzard’s overview gives no percentage increase per investment.

Change the setup when your objective changes

Say you’ve favored weapon rewards and finally get the upgrade. Now you need materials. That’s a sensible reason to spend Marks adjusting the reward side of your tree.

One bad plan proves little. Give a setup enough time to judge whether it suits the session, then make a deliberate change. There’s no universal allocation worth copying without checking what your character needs.

Should you save Marks or spend them near the cap?

Keep a purpose for your next respec. With a maximum of 20 Marks, you don’t have much room for a reserve. Spending just because you’re full won’t improve your farming by itself.

Review your preferences before the next completed-plan hand-in. If you already wanted a different activity or reward choice, this is a reasonable time to switch and make some room.

Otherwise, carry on playing. Useful nodes aren’t worth stripping out just to shrink the balance.

Blizzard’s overview doesn’t explain overflow handling, banking excess rewards, or currency transfers. Don’t count on an unconfirmed stash of spare Marks. The holding cap isn’t a stated daily earning limit, either.

Before experimenting, jot down the allocation you’d want to restore. You’ll spare yourself another round of menu guesswork when you switch back.

Do Tyrael’s Boons use Marks of Wisdom?

No. Tyrael’s Boons have a separate gold refund cost. Blizzard lists 5,000,000 gold per unassigned point. Marks replace gold for Tactics and individual Activity-tree changes, but they won’t cover Boons. Tyrael’s Boons rules.

Remove 3 points and it costs 15,000,000 gold. That’s multiplication, not an additional fee. Even a full Marks balance can’t pay it.

The seasonal Tyrael’s Boons tree has 4 paths and up to 132 points. Blizzard says all Seasonal players can access it without owning Lord of Hatred. That access statement applies specifically to Tyrael’s Boons. Official seasonal-tree overview.
