Diablo 4 Grief Runeword Season 15 Guide: Recipe, Stats & Best Classes

TL;DR: What is the Diablo 4 Grief Runeword, and is it worth crafting in Season 15?

Grief is crafted in the Horadric Cube with Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral using a Common (white) Phase Blade or Berserker Axe. It gives your direct damage 40% bonus Poisoning damage over 5 seconds, adds +750–1,000 Weapon Damage, a 20% Deadly Strike Chance, and up to 40% Attack Speed. It is S-Tier for melee endgame and the strongest one-handed melee runeword in Season 15's Hell's Legacy season. The bottleneck is the Lo rune, obtainable from Undercity Tributes and cube upgrades. Recipe reference.

The five runes match the Diablo II recipe exactly. Before crafting, confirm that your class benefits from the Poisoning DoT power — a skill or paragon investment in Poison damage amplifies it significantly. Barbarian Whirlwind and Rogue melee builds get the most out of it.

What does Grief do in Diablo 4 Season 15?

Grief's unique power: Your direct damage inflicts 40% bonus Poisoning damage over 5 seconds. That 40% triggers on every direct hit. With high Attack Speed and a fast skill, Poisoning stacks accumulate quickly and add up to a meaningful portion of your total DPS.

The fixed affixes include:

  • Indestructible (the weapon can never break)
  • +750–1,000 Weapon Damage (highest weapon damage of any runeword)
  • +20% Deadly Strike Chance (chance to deal double damage on a hit)
  • +30–40% Attack Speed
  • +100% Damage to Demons (verified in-game tooltip; doubles damage output against Demon-type enemies)
  • +2 Primary Resource On Kill

The combination of Deadly Strike and high Weapon Damage makes Grief the premier offensive choice for fast melee characters. Stacking additional Deadly Strike Chance from paragon nodes or other gear can push the total past 40–45%, which players in r/diablo4 describe as the point where it "melts everything" (u/Jervaise_B, r/diablo4, Sept 16 2026).

How does Grief's Poisoning power interact with builds?

Grief applies Poisoning damage, not generic Physical damage. Skills and paragon nodes that increase Poison Damage or Poisoning apply to that bonus. Passive nodes that convert Poisoning to another element (Shadow, Cold) interact based on how those conversions work for your class.

Poison impact damage and Poisoning DoT are separate categories in D4's damage system. Grief's power inflicts the Poisoning DoT variant. Check your paragon board for "+% Poisoning Damage" nodes rather than "+% Poison Skill Damage" if those are labeled differently for your class.

What is the Grief Runeword recipe in Season 15?

Combine Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral with a supported Common one-handed weapon in the Horadric Cube. All five runes must go in that order. Season 15 runeword recipes.

Mal rune1Farmable in Whimsyshire / Undercity

Item Power scales with base quality. An Ancestral Common weapon produces an Ancestral Grief with higher item power. The runes are identical — only the base changes. Runeword crafting mechanics.

Which weapon bases work for Grief?

Grief works for one-handed Swords and one-handed Axes only. That includes the Phase Blade and the Berserker Axe. Two-handed weapons do not accept the Grief recipe; Infinity handles the two-handed slot. Grief Phase Blade item page.

Check whether your class can equip a one-handed sword or axe before farming the runes. Barbarians and Rogues are the primary users. Spiritborn builds using axe-eligible configurations can also run Grief.

Which classes benefit most from Grief?

Barbarian Whirlwind is the primary home for Grief in Season 15. Whirlwind strikes rapidly at close range, so the Deadly Strike affix triggers often, and each hit applies the Poisoning DoT independently. The +750–1,000 Weapon Damage scales the base attack, and +30–40% Attack Speed directly increases Whirlwind's rotation speed. Barbarian is among the safest high-ceiling classes in S15, confirmed at Tower Tier 148+ on the S15 push leaderboard after the Rogue Shadow Play nerf in 3.1.2.

Rogue melee builds (Dance of Knives variants) benefit from the Attack Speed, Deadly Strike, and Poisoning synergy. Rogue already operates a Poison toolkit; Grief's 40% bonus Poisoning slots cleanly into that.

Necromancer Bone builds can pair Grief with skills that scale off Weapon Damage, though the Poisoning power gains less value than on attack-speed-reliant classes.

ClassGrief fitKey synergy
Barbarian (Whirlwind)★★★★★High hit rate, Deadly Strike stacks, 1H axe eligible
Rogue (Dance of Knives)★★★★☆Native Poison toolkit, Attack Speed scaling
Paladin (Hammerdin/melee)★★☆☆☆Limited Poison synergy; check weapon eligibility for your build
Necromancer (Bone)★★☆☆☆Weapon Damage scales, Poisoning underused
Sorcerer / Druid / Warlock★☆☆☆☆Cannot equip axes; no melee kit
Spiritborn (melee)★★★☆☆Axe eligible variants; Poison nodes viable

As of Patch 3.2.3 (October 14, 2026), Warlock tops the Season 15 endgame push ladder with Blazing Scream. That build uses Wands, not axes — Grief does not serve Warlock. Barbarian and Rogue remain the two classes where Grief offers the clearest upgrade over other runewords. Source: Icy Veins S15 class tier.

Should you dual-wield Grief?

Barbarian can equip two one-handed weapons. Two copies of Grief would double the Attack Speed and Deadly Strike affixes. The Poisoning power applies per-weapon per-hit, which stacks further. Two Lo runes is a high crafting investment, but the payoff for a Whirlwind build that can sustain top-tier Torment is real. Farm one copy first and benchmark before committing.

How to farm the Lo rune

Lo is the rarest of Grief's five runes. Eth, Tir, Ral and Mal drop from general endgame content; Lo requires higher-tier farming routes.

Undercity with Greater Tribute of Harmony is the fastest reliable path. The Greater Tribute unlocks a rune reward upgrade tier; inspect the upgrade options before confirming and select the rune category. A single run with the right Tribute can yield Lo directly or supply upgrade ingredients. Undercity Tribute reference.

Horadric Cube upgrade ladder: two lower-tier runes of the same name transmute into one of the next tier. If you have spare Mal runes (farmable in Whimsyshire and Undercity), multiple Mal copies convert upward toward Ist and eventually toward Lo via sequential upgrades. The Horadric Cube simulator at d4guides.gg shows the full ladder path. Cube simulator.

Waking Nightmare encounters (the seasonal mechanic) drop runes of various tiers. Running Nightmare Dungeons with the Waking Nightmare affix generates rune income alongside regular loot and scales at higher Torment. For Eth, Tir and Ral specifically, this is the easiest source.

Note: Earlier in Season 15, Horadric Cube Crafting Materials were occasionally not rewarded from Undercity Tributes. That issue has been resolved in subsequent patches — Undercity Tributes correctly award rune materials now. Re-run with any stored Tributes.

Grief vs other Season 15 runewords

Grief is one of five runewords in Season 15 that use five runes. It competes directly with Call to Arms and Infinity for endgame weapon slots.

RunewordBase typeUnique powerBest for
Grief1H Sword / Axe40% Poisoning DoT on direct damageMelee DPS
Call to Arms1H Sword / AxeRank 14 Warcry, Rank 13 Battle Orders auraAll classes (skill buffs)
Infinity2H weaponClose enemies Vulnerable, Chain Lightning on killCaster / ranged
Spirit1H weapon / Shield+5 All Skills, 50% Damage Multiplier at L25Leveling
EnigmaChestTeleport Evade, +2 All Skills, +45% Move SpeedAll classes

Grief wins for raw melee DPS. Call to Arms wins for party support and Warcry-buffed classes. There is no overlap — you can equip Grief in your main hand and Call to Arms in the off-hand if Barbarian's dual-wield setup supports both. Full runeword tier list.

Patch history: what changed for Grief?

Hotfix 4 (September 22, 2026) fixed "the Old Mountain Talisman 5-set bonus + Grief dealing unintended damage." The Grief power itself was not nerfed — the fix removed an unintended damage multiplier from the Old Mountain Talisman set interaction specifically. Grief's base Poisoning power, Deadly Strike, and Attack Speed stats are unchanged. Official Hotfix 4 source.

Patch 3.2.3 (October 14, 2026) contained no changes to Grief or runewords in general. The patch fixed Splinter of Evil questline progression, Horadric Cube affix rerolling for four affix types, and a Baal/Tyrael loot interaction. No runeword entries appear in the 3.2.3 notes. 3.2.3 overview.

Where to get runes fast (gold shortcut)

Grief requires five runes across three different tiers. Farming Lo from scratch with a fresh seasonal character can take multiple endgame sessions. If you need to accelerate — for example, to hit Torment XII Baal runs before the season ends — the fastest route is buying Diablo 4 Gold and spending it at the Purveyor of Curiosities to gamble for rune drops or white weapon bases.

Need Diablo 4 Gold to fund your Grief recipe?

  • Diablo IV Gold — buy gold fast, usable immediately at the Horadric Post or Purveyor of Curiosities for rune gambling
  • Diablo IV Services — boss carries and power leveling to unlock the endgame content where high-tier runes drop

FAQ

What runes do I need for Grief in Diablo 4? Grief requires Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, and Ral in that order, combined with a Common Phase Blade or Berserker Axe in the Horadric Cube. Lo is the hardest rune to acquire. All five runes follow the original Diablo II Grief formula.

Is Grief the best runeword for Barbarian in Season 15? For Whirlwind Barbarian, Grief is the strongest main-hand option for raw DPS. Its Deadly Strike Chance, Attack Speed, and Poisoning power each benefit the build's rapid-hit playstyle. Call to Arms is the preferred off-hand if you want Warcry uptime instead of a second Grief.

Does Grief's Poisoning power count as a Poison skill? Grief applies Poisoning damage (DoT), not a Poison skill activation. Nodes that boost Poisoning Damage or Poisoning DoT duration amplify it. Nodes that buff a specific skill like Poison Dart do not affect Grief's power unless that skill itself triggers the DoT separately.

Did Hotfix 4 nerf Grief? Hotfix 4 (September 22, 2026) removed an unintended damage multiplier from the Old Mountain Talisman set bonus when combined with Grief. The Grief runeword's own stats and power are unchanged. The fix targeted the set-bonus interaction, not Grief itself.

Can I use Grief on a Sorcerer? Sorcerers cannot equip one-handed axes or swords in Season 15. Grief requires those weapon types. Sorcerers should consider Infinity (two-handed weapons, including staves) or Enigma (chest armor) for comparable endgame runeword power. Barbarian, Rogue, and Spiritborn are the eligible melee options for Grief.
