TL;DR: How do you unlock Torment in Diablo 4? Reach character level 70, then clear Pit Tier 10 before the timer expires to access Torment I. There are 12 Torment tiers on the live ladder, with Torment XII at Pit Tier 100. Every qualifying run must beat the clock. These thresholds are confirmed live in Season 15 (Hell’s Legacy, patch 3.2.x). Current difficulty requirements, Pit completion rules, Season 15 patch notes.
Torment has three separate checks: access to The Pit, your character level, and the clear that opens a higher world difficulty. Miss one and you can kill the boss, head back to town, and find the button still locked.
Check before running it again.
Here are the thresholds, Seasonal and Eternal entry routes, and fixes for unlocks that didn't register. If you're returning after a break, read the defense changes before picking a farming difficulty, too.

How does Torment work in Diablo 4 Season 15?
Season 15 (Hell’s Legacy, patch 3.2.x) is live. The twelve-tier Torment ladder introduced in Season 14 carries forward unchanged. Blizzard states, ”Torment levels expand from 4 to 12”, and lists a level-70 cap for all Diablo IV players. Live patch notes, Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred overview.
Still thinking in four tiers? Torment IV is an early checkpoint now. Follow the thresholds below.
What Pit tier unlocks each Torment difficulty?
Every row requires character level 70 and a successful timed Pit clear. These reward columns show difficulty bonuses, not measured earnings per hour. Maxroll’s difficulty table, timed-clear requirements.
| Torment difficulty | Required Pit tier | Extra monster-kill XP | Gold bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| I — T1 | 10 | +300% | +100% |
| II — T2 | 15 | +400% | +120% |
| III — T3 | 20 | +500% | +140% |
| IV — T4 | 25 | +600% | +160% |
| V — T5 | 30 | +700% | +180% |
| VI — T6 | 40 | +800% | +200% |
| VII — T7 | 50 | +900% | +225% |
| VIII — T8 | 60 | +1,000% | +250% |
| IX — T9 | 70 | +1,100% | +275% |
| X — T10 | 80 | +1,200% | +300% |
| XI — T11 | 90 | +1,300% | +300% |
| XII — T12 | 100 | +1,400% | +300% |
Those gaps get wider. Requirements climb in five-Pit-tier steps through Torment V, then ten-tier steps from Torment VI onward. The later unlocks take substantially more progress.
XP bonuses increase by 100 percentage points per step. Going from +300% to +400% doesn't double your experience gain. Watch how much longer kills take on the tougher setting.
Torment XII ends the world-difficulty ladder. The Pit continues to Tier 150, but finishing all 150 tiers isn't required. Pit difficulty ceiling.
Pick a target before opening the Obelisk. Pit 25 gets you Torment IV; Pit 60 gets you Torment VIII. Glyph upgrades can help with the push, though the difficulty table lists no separate Glyph-rank requirement.
How do you unlock Torment I step by step?
1. Open The Pit on your character’s realm
On the Seasonal Realm, complete Hellish Descent, the Capstone Dungeon tied to Season Rank II. Eternal Realm characters get Pit access at level 70. These are the current entry routes. Maxroll’s updated Pit guide.
For a seasonal character, open the Season Rank screen and track the unfinished requirements. Follow that progression until the Capstone becomes available.
Can't use the Obelisk? Sort out access first. Better gear won't satisfy a missing progression requirement.
2. Reach character level 70
Check your actual level on the character screen before making the qualifying attempt.
A Pit 10 clear while leveling isn't enough. Run it again after reaching 70; the community’s Lord of Hatred FAQ specifically flags pre-70 clears as insufficient for Torment I access. Player FAQ on the level requirement.
3. Select Pit Tier 10 at the Artificer’s Obelisk
Use the Obelisk in Cerrigar in Scosglen. Characters with access to Temis can enter there as well. Select the required tier if it's available. Otherwise, work through the selectable tiers until it opens. Pit entrance locations.
Lowering your usual world difficulty won't soften this fight. Pit monsters scale with the Pit tier selected. Pit monster scaling.
Check your bar in town. It's easier to spot a missing defensive skill, an empty equipment slot, or an item swap that broke resource generation before you're inside.
4. Beat the boss before the timer expires
You have 15 minutes to fill the progress bar and kill the final boss. Getting there doesn't count.
The boss must die before time runs out. A successful clear also opens further Pit tiers, with additional unlocks depending on how much time remains. Pit timer and progression rules.
Look for elite packs and kill nearby monsters as you move. Maxroll identifies elites as the biggest contributors to the progress bar, so don't trek back through empty rooms for scattered stragglers. Pit routing basics.
Leave time for the boss. If ordinary packs swallow almost the whole clock, fix something that helps across the run rather than only in the final fight.
5. Activate the unlocked difficulty
Choose your available Torment setting at a World Difficulty Statue, such as the one in Cerrigar or Kyovashad. Confirm it's active before heading out. Difficulty selection locations.
Try familiar content first. Access gets you through the door; repeated clean clears tell you whether to farm there.

How should you climb from Torment II to XII?
Early tiers: get the build working consistently
Start with a setup your gear can support. Copying an endgame skill bar without its key item can leave you out of resource for half of every pack.
Waiting more than attacking? Fix resource generation or cooldown gaps before chasing another damage roll. Change one thing, repeat the same threshold, and see whether it helped.
Middle tiers: identify what eats the timer
Time packs and bosses separately. Tearing through rooms but barely scratching the boss is a different problem from struggling on every pull.
Read your damage bonuses. A setup that depends on frequent kills may behave differently against a lone boss, and your rotation needs to keep its required effects running. Successful Pit clears also award Glyph upgrades; spend them on Glyphs your current Paragon setup actually uses, and inspect the boards after swapping builds. Glyph upgrades in The Pit.
Don't leave yesterday’s setup behind tonight’s push.
Final tiers: push after meaningful upgrades
Farm comfortably while working toward the next threshold. Once you've improved whatever held you back, whether damage, survival, or downtime, try again.
Last-second clears still count.
They don't guarantee a smooth evening of farming, though. Take the new tier, then base your regular difficulty on results you can repeat.
Why is Torment still locked after a Pit clear?
Before calling it a bug, check these in order:
- Character level: were you already level 70 when you made the qualifying clear?
- Pit tier: did the completed run meet or exceed the table's threshold?
- Timer: did the boss die before the countdown expired?
- Progression: does your seasonal character have the required Pit access?
- Active setting: have you selected the difficulty, or is it just available?
Players report this frustration in a Torment I unlock discussion, including cases where characters cleared the relevant Pit tiers before level 70. Check your level before repeating a long quest chain.
Cleared it before 70? Repeat the qualifying run now.
If every requirement checks out, return to town and read the remaining lock message carefully. Record your realm, character level, Pit tier, and timer result for a bug report. “Torment won’t open” gives someone much less to work with.

How much armor and resistance do you need?
Start with the recommended Toughness shown in the difficulty menu. Blizzard removed the old per-tier armor and resistance penalties. Both defenses now use ratings with diminishing returns, so an old penalty chart is the wrong shopping list for your gear. Blizzard’s defense overhaul.
The Toughness tooltip breaks down your defenses against individual damage types. Blizzard’s patch notes confirm you'll find it in Character Stats. Official Toughness tooltip changes.
What's actually killing you?
Ordinary hits wearing down your health call for a different response from an obvious boss wind-up you stood through. Bigger defensive numbers help with the first problem; learning the attack may solve the second. I'd change one defense, retry familiar content, and keep what improves survival without making the timer impossible.
Should you farm the highest Torment you have unlocked?
Farm wherever a full session gives you the most useful rewards. Higher Torment brings larger experience and gold bonuses, plus better gear and material drops, according to Blizzard. You still need to clear fast enough for those bonuses to pay off per hour. Official Torment reward overview.
Compare the same activity on neighboring difficulties. Count deaths, travel, and inventory time, too. Big reward popups can hide slow runs.
One limit matters here: the listed gold bonus stays at +300% from Torment X through XII, while monster-kill XP continues rising. Other loot improvements are separate, so equal gold bonuses don't make every reward identical. Difficulty bonus breakdown.
Boss runs may warrant a different setting. Changing Torment does not reset War Plans; expansion owners can lower it for an encounter their current build struggles to finish. War Plans and difficulty changes.
Do Season 15 Challenge Dungeons unlock higher Torment?
No. Challenge Dungeons in Season 15 (Hell’s Legacy) let you enter encounters selectable up to three Torment tiers above your current world difficulty, but completing them does not permanently open those world settings. The Pit remains the only path to permanent Torment unlocks. Blizzard’s Challenge Dungeon notes.
Use the Pit thresholds in the table above for permanent Torment progression. For your full S15 endgame plan, see the Diablo 4 Season 15 endgame guide.
