Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy, went live on September 15, 2026 with patch 3.2.1, and the first real decision every player hits after the opening questline is which Prime Evil Splinter to carry: Diablo's Splinter of Terror, Baal's Splinter of Destruction, or Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred. You can only hold one at a time, each one buffs a different set of endgame activities, and swapping later is not a menu click — so the choice matters. This guide covers what each Splinter does, the exact reputation ranks and thresholds, which one to pick for leveling versus pushing, and how to swap alignment mid-season without losing progress.

Quick answer: In Diablo 4 Season 15 you defeat the echoes of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto to earn all three Splinters of Evil, then choose one Prime Evil Splinter to equip. Baal's Splinter of Destruction (Cold) is the strongest all-round leveling pick because it buffs The Undercity and Lair Bosses — the fastest early loot loops. Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred (Physical) is the endgame pushing pick (The Pit + Nightmare Dungeons, with a 200% damage trigger). Diablo's Splinter of Terror (Fire) is best if you live in Helltide and Infernal Hordes. You carry only one at a time; to swap, you must earn another Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares. Read on for the full rank tables and pick-by-goal breakdown.

What are Prime Evil Splinters in Season 15?

Chasing the Prime Evils in Diablo 4 Season 15 seasonal questline

Season 15 is Diablo's 30th-anniversary season, and its headline mechanic revives the three classic Prime Evils. During the seasonal questline — guided by a returning Deckard Cain — you hunt echoes of all three in locations pulled straight from the series' history:

  • Diablo — beneath Tristram Cathedral
  • Baal — at the Arreat Summit
  • Mephisto — inside the Durance of Hate

Defeating those three echoes grants you all three Splinters of Evil. From there, per Blizzard's own reveal, "choose one Prime Evil whose power and reputation track you want to advance." That Splinter gives you an Iconic Power that triggers on its own as you fight, plus a reputation track with eight activity modifiers and six power upgrades.

There's a catch the patch notes are blunt about: "The Splinter also makes you more vulnerable to its associated Prime Evil. Be warned: what you hunt will stalk you in return." So each Splinter is a trade — a strong seasonal power in exchange for taking more damage from that Evil's echoes.

Do not confuse this with Soul Splinters. The Prime Evil Splinter (Terror/Destruction/Hatred) is your seasonal power choice — you hold one. The eight Soul Splinters are separate socketable gems you can slot up to three of. Different systems, similar name.

Splinter of Terror vs Destruction vs Hatred: full comparison

Each Splinter deals a different damage type, plays with a different rhythm, and — most importantly for planning your season — buffs a different pair of endgame activities. Reference power values below are Blizzard/community-datamined numbers at level 70, Paragon 200, item power 900, and scale with your weapon damage.

Prime Evil Splinter? Diablo's Splinter of Terror grants Flames of Metus (Fire) — periodic lines of fire dealing ~20,720 up-front plus ~165,758 over 4 seconds. It modifies Helltide (bonus Aberrant Cinders) and Infernal Hordes (bonus Aether).

Which does Destruction buff? Baal's Splinter of Destruction grants Ice of Excidium (Cold) — a ~69,066 Cold blast with smaller ~13,813 projectiles. It modifies The Undercity (Attunement) and Lair Bosses (an extra Boss Trophy per kill).

Which does Hatred buff? Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred grants Ghosts of Odium (Physical) — spectral ghosts dealing ~34,533 Physical damage. It modifies Nightmare Dungeons (more triggers and up to 200% damage) and The Pit (bonus Progress Orbs).

How the reputation track and six upgrades work

Every Splinter uses the same structure: the Iconic Power is active from rank 1, and the six upgrades unlock as you earn reputation from Waking Nightmares and slaying Prime Evil remnants. The rank thresholds are identical across all three tracks:

RankReputation neededTerror (Diablo)Destruction (Baal)Hatred (Mephisto)
10 (base power)Flames of MetusIce of ExcidiumGhosts of Odium
2350Flaring CindersSiege EngineUndying Rage

1613,100Dread PresenceSeizing FrostStrangling Grip
2117,400Consuming BlazeShattered FleshVengeful Soul
2420,000Rapture of FearThrill of RuinFever of Malice

Three upgrade patterns run through all Splinters regardless of which you pick: the rank-6 upgrade generates 50 Primary Resource per power trigger (huge for sustain), the rank-21 upgrade adds 20% of the enemy's Maximum Life as damage over 4 seconds on the first hit (and cannot be increased further), and the rank-24 capstone dramatically amplifies the power. Reaching that final rank-24 upgrade takes the full 20,000 reputation, so plan to farm the activities your Splinter actually buffs — that's the whole point of aligning the choice with your play style.

Which Prime Evil Splinter should you choose?

There is no single "best" Splinter for every player — the right pick is the one whose two buffed activities match what you'll grind this season. Here's the practical breakdown:

  • Fastest leveling & early gearing → Baal's Splinter of Destruction. The Undercity is the season's most efficient repeatable loot loop, and the extra Lair Boss Trophy accelerates target-farming Uber materials. Cold also pairs cleanly with most launch-meta builds. This is the safest default if you're rushing to endgame.

Diablo 4 The Pit endgame combat, buffed by Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred

  • Endgame pushing & Paragon grinding → Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred. Nightmare Dungeons and The Pit are where you level glyphs and climb tiers, and Hatred's up-to-200% damage trigger plus Pit Progress Orbs make it the strongest ladder-push option. Switch to this once you're at max character level and farming Paragon.
  • Helltide / Infernal Hordes mains → Diablo's Splinter of Terror. If you prefer open-world Cinder farming and Hordes for materials and Aether, Terror's bonus Aberrant Cinders and Aether stack up fast. Fire also fuels burn-scaling builds.

A common season-long plan: start on Destruction to blitz to endgame, then swap to Hatred for the Paragon and Pit grind once your character is capped. If you're short on time and want to skip the low-level slog entirely — say, to jump straight into pushing on Hatred — a Diablo 4 power-leveling & boss carry run gets your character to the endgame bracket where the Splinter choice actually matters.

How to swap your Prime Evil Splinter

You can carry only one Prime Evil Splinter at a time, and swapping is deliberately gated. To change your alignment, you must acquire another Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares — the multi-level Capstone-style encounters that first appear during the seasonal questline and can be replayed on Torment difficulty. In other words, a swap is an endgame activity, not a loadout toggle: you re-earn the Splinter for the Evil you want to switch to.

The good news is that your reputation on each track persists — Blizzard designed the season so you can build all three trees over time without permanently losing progress on the one you set aside. That's why the "Destruction to level, Hatred to push" route works: you're not throwing away your Destruction reputation when you swap to Hatred, you're just changing which power is active. Note the drawback carries too — while a Splinter is equipped you take extra damage from its matching Prime Evil in Waking Nightmares, so gear your resistances accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Prime Evil Splinter is best in Diablo 4 Season 15? There's no universal best — pick by your activity. Baal's Splinter of Destruction is the strongest all-round leveling choice (buffs The Undercity and Lair Bosses), Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred is best for endgame pushing (The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons, with a 200% damage trigger), and Diablo's Splinter of Terror is best for Helltide and Infernal Hordes farmers.

Can you carry more than one Prime Evil Splinter at once? No. You can hold only one Prime Evil Splinter at a time. Its Iconic Power and reputation track are tied to that single alignment until you swap.

How do you swap your Prime Evil Splinter in Season 15? You acquire another Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares — the Capstone-style encounters that appear during the seasonal questline and can be replayed on Torment. Your reputation on each track is retained, so swapping doesn't reset progress on a Splinter you set aside.

What's the difference between Prime Evil Splinters and Soul Splinters? They're separate systems with similar names. The Prime Evil Splinter (Terror, Destruction, or Hatred) is your one seasonal power choice. Soul Splinters are eight socketable gems, each with a strong bonus and a drawback, and you can equip up to three of them at the same time.

How much reputation do you need to fully upgrade a Splinter? The final rank-24 upgrade requires 20,000 reputation on that track, earned from Waking Nightmares and slaying Prime Evil remnants. Key breakpoints are rank 6 (1,300 rep, +50 Primary Resource per trigger) and rank 21 (17,400 rep, adds 20% of enemy Maximum Life as damage on first hit).

Does the Prime Evil Splinter have a downside? Yes. Whichever Splinter you equip makes you more vulnerable to that Prime Evil — you take extra damage from its echoes in Waking Nightmares. Plan your resistances around the Splinter you're running.
