TL;DR: Which Tyrael's Boons path should you choose for gold farming?
>
Based on Blizzard's Season 16 PTR preview, start with Scent of Gold and favor its monster Gold-and-Gems branch for raw gold. Pair it with up to 3 points in the Gold reward node in War Plans Tactics, if you have access to that system. Keep your Boons allocation stable: refunds cost 5,000,000 gold per point, while Marks of Wisdom respec the other War Plans trees and have a 20-Mark PTR cap. Blizzard's 3.3.0 PTR announcement
A gold-farming setup should leave you richer after you finish playing. That sounds obvious until you start changing trees between activities and spend the evening earning back your refund fees.
Status checked October 26, 2026: this is a preparation guide, based on announced mechanics. The Season 16 PTR opens October 27 at 10 a.m. PDT and closes November 3 at 10 a.m. PST; those are test dates, not the season's launch date. The recommendations below are deductions from the published systems, not measured farming results. Official PTR schedule
Here's how to choose your Scent of Gold branch, combine it with Tactics, handle Marks of Wisdom, and decide whether changing your allocation will actually pay for itself.

Which Tyrael's Boons path is best for gold farming?
Scent of Gold is the clearest starting choice for raw gold. Blizzard describes it as improving gold and experience, with separate options favoring crafting resources or monster Gold-and-Gem drops. The full Boons system offers up to 132 points across four paths. Official Boons overview
That establishes the direction. It doesn't establish a perfect allocation for every character.
Choose monster gold when your wallet is the problem
Prioritize the Scent of Gold choices that explicitly improve monster gold drops. This is the most direct match for a session whose goal is funding your next purchase or upgrade.
Build the session around steady kills. A route full of travel, inventory sorting, or a boss you struggle to finish gives a monster-drop investment fewer opportunities to help. Your best farming difficulty is the one that produces the strongest measured return over a complete session; the highest difficulty you can survive isn't automatically the winner.
Keep the goal narrow. If you finish with a bag of materials but still can't afford the upgrade you wanted, you solved a different problem.
Choose crafting resources when they are your bottleneck
Scent of Gold's alternative favors Horadric Cube materials and Gem Fragments. That makes it a sensible option to evaluate when your next project needs those resources. Blizzard also describes a Legendary-finding option, without publishing its percentage in the written overview. Scent of Gold details
Separate those benefits in your notes. Materials you will use have practical value, but they aren't automatically spendable gold. An impressive loot pile can hide a weak cash return.
Should you take another path first?
The other paths address different needs: Curious Addition modifies the Purveyor of Curiosities, Merchant of Mystery adds cache shopping, and Trash for Treasure focuses on transmuting and material-related benefits. Blizzard's four-path breakdown
Consider them when equipment or crafting is holding you back. If a gear improvement would make your clears much faster, pursuing that improvement may be more useful than squeezing extra gold out of slow runs. That's a progression decision to test with your character, not a reason to call every path a gold farm.
Merchant of Mystery, for example, initially sells caches for Forgotten Souls at Torment difficulty. Curious Addition includes an option that makes the Purveyor more expensive in exchange for better Ancestral chances. Those are equipment decisions involving resource spending. Official merchant and Purveyor details
Before taking either, identify the item improvement you're chasing. If you can't name one, keep your immediate cash goal in focus rather than shopping because a new merchant appeared.
How should you combine Scent of Gold with War Plans Tactics?
Think of the two trees as answering different questions: what benefits do you want, and what activities and rewards do you want offered?
Favor Gold rewards, then your strongest activities
In Tactics, Blizzard allows up to 3 points per Reward node and 3 points per Activity node. Gold is one of the available reward categories. These investments improve appearance chances; the announcement doesn't promise guaranteed Gold rewards or publish a probability for each rank. War Plans Tactics rules
For a cash-focused setup, prioritize Gold reward weighting, then favor activities you already complete smoothly. Follow the tree's actual prerequisites instead of assuming a written priority list is a clickable allocation map.
Be honest about your build. If you mow down packs but take ages to kill a boss, don't build your entire farming session around that boss because someone else's character deletes it. Test the content you can repeat without constant recovery or downtime.
Treat advanced activity options as a comparison
Putting at least 1 point into Helltides or Nightmare Dungeons opens a choice to favor Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons respectively. Official activity-node explanation
Try those options after establishing a baseline. More demanding content needs to repay its extra time. Compare the entire run, including travel and completion rewards, before deciding that an advanced option belongs in your regular gold route.
Don't change your Boons branch during that comparison. Keep it fixed while you test Tactics choices, so you can tell which change helped.
How do Marks of Wisdom work, and what still costs gold?
Marks of Wisdom come from turning in completed War Plans. They replace gold for changing nodes in War Plans Tactics and the individual Activity trees. The announced PTR holding cap is 20 Marks. Tyrael's Boons uses a separate refund rule. Marks of Wisdom explanation
Blizzard states: “You can unassign points in Tyrael's Boons for 5,000,000 gold per point.” Official refund rule
What does changing your Boons allocation cost?
| Boons points refunded | Gold cost at the announced rate |
|---|---|
| 1 | 5,000,000 |
| 4 | 20,000,000 |
| 5 | 25,000,000 |
| 10 | 50,000,000 |
| 20 | 100,000,000 |
These totals are calculated from Blizzard's per-point price, not estimated farming returns. The accompanying development screenshot displays a different refund value and is marked as unfinished. This table follows the written announcement; check the confirmation dialog in the test client before spending. Written rules and development screenshot
Spend Marks with a purpose
Use a Tactics or Activity-tree change to answer a specific question: does this selection produce better results for my build? Record the old setup before changing it.
The 20-Mark figure is a PTR cap. It is not a confirmed Season 16 launch cap, an earning rate, or a promise that every reset costs one Mark. Read the relevant refund tooltip; don't apply one node's displayed cost to every tree.

What should your first gold-farming session look like?
Start with a target purchase or upgrade. Knowing what you need makes it easier to stop experimenting and finish the job.
Establish a repeatable route
- Choose the monster-gold direction in Scent of Gold. Read the actual node tooltips and prerequisites before committing points.
- Favor Gold rewards in Tactics where available. Pick activity weighting around your character's reliable clears.
- Choose a comfortable difficulty. Use repeatable performance, including failed attempts, when comparing settings.
- Finish your selected War Plan and collect its rewards. Include the return trip and turn-in in your timing.
- Record the result before changing anything. Note elapsed time, gold gained, gold spent, and useful materials separately.
Use a route you can repeat with roughly the same attention and effort. A frantic run that only works when every cooldown lines up perfectly is a poor baseline for an ordinary evening.
Measure spendable gold honestly
Use this calculation:
Net gold per hour = (ending gold − starting gold) × 60 ÷ elapsed minutes.
Record your starting balance after any test-vendor grants. Keep unrelated purchases outside the measurement window. Necessary farming expenses will already reduce the difference between your starting and ending balances, so don't subtract them twice.
Count vendor sales consistently. Either sell the unwanted loot from every comparison run or keep sales outside every run. Don't include a lucky sale in one route and compare it against another route's ground drops alone.
Also record the reason you stopped killing. Were you traveling, sorting items, dying, or waiting on a difficult encounter? That observation tells you what to change next. A reward bonus cannot fix a route whose main problem is wasted time.
Separate monster drops from completion payouts
A larger completion payout doesn't prove that a monster-drop perk multiplied it. Blizzard's preview identifies the monster-gold option without explaining every interaction with chests, caches, or vendor sales.
For testing, note your balance just before the final reward and again after collecting it. This helps show whether the activity paid well during the fighting, at completion, or both. Keep those observations alongside the complete-run total. You don't need an elaborate spreadsheet, but you do need to avoid crediting Scent of Gold for every coin that appears during a run.

When is a Boons respec actually worth the gold?
Only when the expected improvement can repay the refund bill within the time you intend to use the new setup.
The useful comparison is extra gold earned over your old allocation, not the new allocation's total income. Refund five points and the new setup must earn an additional 25,000,000 gold just to cover that change, using the announced price.
That's why switching back and forth for short sessions is hard to justify. Each change creates another bill. Before refunding, write down what the new allocation is supposed to improve and how long you'll keep it.
If you don't know the improvement yet, test it on the PTR first. If you can't test it, a conservative approach is to spend newly earned points toward your next goal and postpone an expensive reshuffle.
There is also a practical exception: your goal can change. Once you've funded the purchase you needed, a crafting-focused allocation may suit the next project better. Make that switch deliberately, with its cost included in the project budget.
What should you check on the PTR before Season 16?
Blizzard's test vendor Mrak offers gold grants, War Plans boosts, and a Tyrael's Boons max-out option. Use those tools to compare allocations once the PTR opens. They are testing aids, not evidence of normal progression speed. Official PTR vendor options
Keep your equipment, difficulty, and route consistent while comparing the two Scent of Gold directions. Check the gold total and the resources you actually needed. Repeat a promising result before paying to rebuild around it.
The written preview doesn't provide Scent of Gold's bonus percentages or a measured gold-per-hour result. Until those are verified, an exact percentage build or universal fastest activity would be guesswork. The useful starting plan is specific enough already: prioritize monster gold, favor cash rewards, and keep refund spending under control.

FAQ
Which Tyrael's Boons path should I choose first for gold? Scent of Gold's monster-gold direction is the strongest starting recommendation from the announced mechanics. Its lead over other setups still needs testing with your build.
Can I respec my War Plans trees? Yes. The announced system uses Marks of Wisdom for Tactics and Activity trees. Tyrael's Boons refunds remain a gold expense under the separate rule explained above.
Do I need Lord of Hatred to use Tyrael's Boons? No. Blizzard explicitly grants access to all Seasonal players without that expansion. This statement concerns Boons; it does not establish access to every expansion activity. Official access statement
Should I copy someone else's War Plans allocation? Use it as a starting point, then compare complete runs on your character. Different clear times can change whether an activity is worth favoring.
What should I change if I'm farming but still constantly broke? Check refund spending and compare net gold after expenses. Keep crafting materials separate from cash, and make sure your chosen route funds the upgrade you actually need.
