FC 27 Launch Feedback Update: EA Won't Change Manual Defending — and 3 Things It Never Mentioned

EA has finally put its name to an answer on the thing half of FC 27 has been arguing about since launch. On 13 October 2026 it published the EA SPORTS FC 27 Launch Feedback Update — a five-topic post setting out what is being changed, what has already been fixed, and what is merely being watched.

The headline is the one nobody in the Reddit threads wanted: manual defending is not being nerfed. EA's reading of its own match data is that this is a skill curve, not a balance bug.

Quick answer (TLDR): EA's 13 October Launch Feedback Update covers five community topics — manual defending, FUT Champions matchmaking, Career Mode transfer requests, fullback defensive depth, and The Grounds Kickabouts matchmaking. Only one has actually been fixed: FUT Champions matchmaking, patched on 9 October. Manual defending gets no change — EA says match data shows "a learning curve at play". Fullbacks are confirmed as a real problem but EA is deliberately moving slowly. Career Mode transfer requests were addressed in Title Updates 1.0.3 and 1.0.4. And the three things players complain about most loudly on top of defending — player switching, loose-ball AI reactions, and connection quality — are not mentioned anywhere in the update.

What exactly did EA say about FC 27 manual defending?

EA opened with an admission of scale — "One of the most discussed topics since launch has been the difficulty level of manual defending" — restated the intent ("we wanted to give more agency to manual defenders in FC 27, rewarding anticipation, positioning, and timing rather than relying on automated teammates"), and then delivered the verdict, sourced to its own telemetry:

"Looking closely at match data, we're seeing a learning curve at play, with players who have adapted to the new defensive mechanics finding more success as others continue to adjust to the updated systems."

Read that carefully. EA is not saying defending is fine as a matter of taste — it is saying the data splits players into adapted and still adapting, and the adapted group is winning more. That framing makes a nerf almost impossible to justify internally, because it would take the advantage away from the players who did what EA asked. The section closes on a hedge, not a commitment: "we know adapting takes time. We are keeping a close eye on this."

Two details from the pre-launch FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive are worth knowing before you argue about this, because almost nobody cites them.

First, the AI defending change is Competitive-only. EA's section is headed "AI Defending (Auto-Tackles)" and opens: "The following changes to AI Defending only apply to Competitive gameplay." Authentic Gameplay was handled separately. So anyone telling you FC 27 ruined defending "in the whole game" is describing one preset.

Second, EA committed to this before launch as a multi-year position:

"These improvements put greater emphasis on manual defending and the decisions you make throughout a match – which is something we aim to preserve throughout the FC 27 life cycle."

That was published in July, two months before anyone played. Read alongside 13 October, it is the same position stated twice. For the mechanical side, our FC 27 manual defending guide covers what you got in exchange — increased jockey speed and a wider manually-triggered stand-tackle range, both measured against FC 26.

The Defending tab of EA's Player Performance screen — a capture from the FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive, not FC 27. These are the per-player numbers EA's "learning curve" claim is built on: standing tackle success rate, defensive duels won, interceptions, blocks. EA has published no FC 27 breakdown of them, and there is no help.ea.com article for the screen at all.

Is a manual-defending nerf coming in the next title update?

On the published evidence: no, and not soon. The Launch Feedback Update commits to monitoring only — there is no "we are investigating a fix" wording in the manual defending section, unlike the fullback section further down. And the Gameplay Developer Launch Update of 30 September set an explicit policy for the whole year:

"We're going to be very measured when it comes to any changes to core gameplay, looking at the wider feedback we're hearing alongside our data and considering what's best for FC 27 over the long term."

Plus the line that should reset everyone's expectations about these posts:

"An item appearing on this list doesn't mean that changes are coming. It simply means we're keeping an eye on it because it's something you're talking about."

EA attributes this restraint to community feedback from last year — players asked for the game to stop changing under them mid-cycle. Title Update 1.0.4 shipped on 7 October with an explicit note that it contained no gameplay balance and tuning changes: the policy in practice.

What do players actually say is broken?

This is where the update and the community diverge, and it is the most useful thing to take away. Across the biggest FC 27 defending threads on r/EASportsFC in the last 24 hours, the complaint that gets upvoted is rarely "manual defending is too hard". Three specific things recur (paraphrased, no handles):

  • AI teammates ignoring loose balls. The most-upvoted thread of the day argues the pendulum swung too far on both sides of the ball, with players describing defenders standing and watching a ball roll past their own feet. EA's Pitch Notes say that is not supposed to happen: "AI-controlled defenders can still gain possession when a loose ball comes within reach or when a dribbler runs directly into them." So either the loose-ball reach is tuned tighter than players expect, or these are bug reports rather than design complaints. Neither reading is addressed on 13 October.
  • Player switching. In the "bring back AI defending" thread the grievance resolved — in the author's own follow-ups — to a collision issue and to switching, not assistance levels. There is a mechanical reason it hurts more this year, straight from the Pitch Notes: "We've also reduced AI defensive reach for interceptions. A manually-controlled defender will be able to reach further than an AI-controlled defender." Reach now depends on whether you are holding that defender, so every missed switch costs more than it did in FC 26. EA's update does not mention switching once. (Our FC 27 tactics and player-position bug post covers the related menu-side problems.)
  • Connection quality. A separate thread argues a more manual game punishes latency far harder than an assisted one, because mistimed input is now a goal rather than a recovery. Nothing in the update addresses connection, ping or server quality.

There is also an unresolved disagreement about who the change serves. One argument runs that EA finally listened to higher-ranked players; the counter is that professional matches are finishing 11-10 and the pros are the loudest critics. A third reply rebuts both by noting pro matches use nine-minute halves rather than six, so high scorelines are not new evidence. EA has published no competitive scoreline data for FC 27, so nobody telling you what "the pros" think is doing more than guessing.

One community complaint is on EA's list. From the 30 September notes: "players using items with lower defensive attributes may be too effective at making the types of interceptions you'd typically expect to see from the best defenders." That is EA half-conceding the "my pass gets intercepted through my own player" complaint — as attribute scaling, not a defending problem.

What was wrong with FUT Champions matchmaking, and is it fixed?

This is the one concrete fix in the entire update, and it matters more to your rewards than anything else on the list.

EA's wording: "We heard your feedback during the first FUT Champions weekend that matchmaking was feeling inconsistent and our team discovered an issue that made matchmaking tuning broader than originally intended. To resolve this issue, we deployed a fix on October 9th."

The fix detail lives on EA's FC Direct communication account rather than in the article, which is why most coverage missed it. Posted on 9 October 2026:

"The fix for this issue has been released. FUT Champions matchmaking will now behave similar to previous events, pairing players with opponents closer to their form in the event."

In plain terms: FC 27 Champions matches you on Form. Community trackers describe it as a +1-per-win, -1-per-loss counter that starts at 0 each run — EA has never published the formula, but it has now confirmed Form is the pairing input. "Broader than originally intended" means the system was reaching further outside your Form band than it should have — so a 2-5 player could be drawn against someone on a 7-0 run. If your first Champions weekend felt wildly inconsistent and your second felt normal, that is the fix landing, not variance. Our Weekend League matchmaking and Form explainer walks through how the band works, and the Rivals matchmaking comparison covers why Division 6 can feel harder than Champions itself.

Two caveats. EA published no before/after numbers, so the size of the change is unknown; and nothing here touches the 15 matches per run structure or the 1,000 CQP qualification threshold, both community-tracked rather than EA-documented.

Nine days left in Season 1 and matchmaking just got fixed? That is the best window of the season to bank rank rewards — and the worst time to be grinding fodder instead of playing.

Which Career Mode transfer problems did EA actually patch?

EA named two: "an excessive amount of transfer requests from players and once a transfer enquiry is made, there are too many competing offers coming in for that player." It credits Title Update V1.0.3 (2 October) and Title Update V1.0.4 (7 October) with improvements that "directly tackles these issues".

Checking that against the published notes is instructive. Title Update 1.0.3 does carry the transfer-request fix, and the wording explains exactly what you were seeing: "In some cases during Manager Career, players may have secretly requested a transfer without sending any prior messages or complaints, even if their morale was high." Title Update 1.0.4 then fixed four negotiation behaviours — CPU clubs instantly accepting an inflated bid, counteroffers exceeding their own stated demands, being unable to sign Free Agents outside a window, and generated players arriving with inflated OVR.

What is not in either patch note is a line that visibly reduces competing offers. That part of EA's claim is not traceable to a published note. Worth knowing too: EA is pushing the opposite direction for your own squad. The Career Mode Developer Launch Update of 29 September says "We're working on balancing changes so players receive more offers" for loan-listed and transfer-listed players. Those are separate systems, and only that one is confirmed in progress.

Why do your fullbacks keep dropping too deep?

Because it is a real bug and EA has confirmed it twice. The Launch Feedback Update: "In some situations, fullbacks are dropping too deep while defending, causing issues with defensive structure and unintentionally keeping attackers onside." The 30 September gameplay notes went further on volume: "One of the largest quantities of feedback we've received has been around fullbacks dropping too early and breaking the defensive line."

So why no fix yet? EA's stated reason is blast radius: "Because Fullback positioning directly affects the overall balance of gameplay, we want to make sure we're careful with any potential changes." A fullback line that holds higher changes every offside call, every through ball and every counter in the game. Treat it as a known quantity for the rest of Season 1 — Defensive Approach and Depth are the only levers you control, and manual recovery runs matter more than usual when your fullback has invented an offside trap in reverse.

Why can't you get a Kickabout started?

EA confirmed the obvious cause — not enough people queueing at once: "we've heard your feedback that Kickabouts can sometimes be difficult to get started due to player availability." Status is investigation, not fix: EA says it is "actively looking into ways to improve matchmaking queues" and will update "as we get closer to a potential fix". Remember that The Grounds, including Clubs, only exists on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, which structurally shrinks the pool compared with any Ultimate Team queue.

What is EA monitoring but not fixing right now?

The update also recaps the four Developer Launch Updates published the week before. Added together, EA lists 17 items it is monitoring or investigating — and per its own disclaimer, appearing here is not a promise of a change.

AreaItems EA says it is monitoring or investigating
GameplayFullbacks dropping too deep · kick-off goal trends · interceptions by low-defending items · low driven shots near the post · foul calls
Career ModeStamina and Dynamic OVR management · Team Management UI visual updates · newly generated players with high starting OVR · general systems and progression feedback
Ultimate TeamUltimate Team gameplay and progression · Transfer Market and market trends · SBC and Objectives feedback · reported issues and prioritisation
The GroundsKickabouts matchmaking and player availability · menu performance · incorrect Attribute costs for certain upgrades · reported issues across activities

One is worth flagging because it drives the meta. On shooting, EA said: "We've seen feedback that low driven shots, particularly towards the near post, can be stronger than other options... We're pretty happy with the current balance between shooting and goalkeeping." That is a no-change signal on the single most complained-about finishing type in FC 27 — consistent with our FC 27 PlayStyles breakdown, where every published rebalance narrowed a gap rather than buffing an ability.

What does this mean for the last nine days of Season 1?

Season 1 runs to 22 October 2026, per EA's Launch Rewards Pitch Notes — nine days from this update. Three practical conclusions:

  • Stop waiting for a defending patch. EA has now said twice, in two separate posts, that it will not move quickly on core gameplay. Any plan that assumes defending gets easier before Season 2 is a plan built on nothing.
  • Champions is the fixed mode. It is the only item on EA's list that has actually been resolved, and it is the mode with the richest rank rewards. If you were avoiding it because the first weekend felt rigged, that specific complaint has a patch date attached to it.
  • Spend down, don't stockpile. Our Season 1 expiry guide covers what disappears on 22 October. EA's own FUT notes report coin balances more than 50% higher than at the same point last year — the whole player base is sitting on fodder it has not used. The same notes put PvE Live Events as the third most-played FUT experience, behind only Rivals and Squad Battles, so if you have skipped them that is progression most people have already banked.

FAQ

Is EA nerfing manual defending in FC 27? No. The 13 October Launch Feedback Update commits to monitoring only, and EA's stated reading of its match data is that "players who have adapted to the new defensive mechanics" are finding more success. There is no investigation or fix language in that section, unlike the fullback section.

Was FUT Champions matchmaking really broken? Yes, and EA confirmed it. The team found an issue that made "matchmaking tuning broader than originally intended" during the first Champions weekend and deployed a fix on 9 October. EA says matchmaking now pairs you with opponents closer to your Form in the event, as in previous years.

Did EA remove AI defending from FC 27? No. EA's Pitch Notes describe "reducing the influence of AI-controlled defenders", and state that AI defenders can still win a loose ball within reach or when a dribbler runs into them. The changes also apply to Competitive gameplay only, not to Authentic Gameplay.

Why are my fullbacks causing offsides? EA has confirmed fullbacks drop too deep in some situations, which keeps attackers onside and breaks the defensive line. It is a known issue with no fix date, held back deliberately because fullback positioning affects the balance of the whole game.

When does FC 27 Season 1 end? 22 October 2026, per EA's Launch Rewards Pitch Notes. Season 2 then runs from 22 October to 3 December 2026.

The bottom line

Five items, one fix. Champions matchmaking was broken, EA found it, and patched it on 9 October — that is the news you can act on. Everything else is a status report, and the status on manual defending is that EA thinks you are still learning.

The more interesting finding is the gap. EA answered the question "is manual defending too hard" with data. The threads are actually asking three other questions — about player switching, about teammates ignoring the ball at their feet, and about whether a manual game is fair at high ping — and none of those appear anywhere in the update. Those are the ones to watch in the next Developer Notes.
