FC 27 Player Roles Explained: All 37 Roles, What Role++ Actually Changes, and the 'New' Roles That Aren't New

Two threads went up on the EA SPORTS FC 27 subreddits within hours of each other today. One asked whether Role++ is worth paying for. The other was titled "Roles have ruined the game." Both argue about a system EA has never published a single help article about — and most of what circulates as a "new in EA FC 27" Roles change actually shipped in FC 26.

So here is the version that holds up: what Roles, Focuses and Role Familiarity each do, the full position-by-position list, the real count, and which players already have every Role++ unlocked for free.

Where we are: FC 27 is in Season 1: Ones to Watch, which EA confirmed runs 17 September to 22 October 2026 — so there are about 10 days of Season 1 left at the time of writing, with Season 2 starting 22 October. Everything below applies to the live Season 1 build.

Quick answer. FC 27 has 37 position-Role slots across the 11 positions — about 30 distinct Role names, because seven Roles appear at two positions each. That's why FUT.GG says 31 Roles and fifauteam says 37; both are counting correctly, just counting different things. Familiarity has three displayed tiers — Base, Role+, Role++ — plus an Out of Position state. EA has never published what Role+ or Role++ change numerically, and there is no EA Help article on Player Roles at all. The four "new FC 27 Roles" being listed everywhere (Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, Box Crasher, Ball-Playing Keeper) were announced in EA's FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive. The one genuine FC 27 Roles change is that every special Item released this year launches with Role++ across every Role in its primary and secondary positions.

What are Player Roles and Focuses in FC 27?

Three separate systems get collapsed into one word in most conversations, so pull them apart.

A Role sets a player's tactical responsibilities when you are not directly controlling them: where they stand, when they track back, whether they hold width, whether they make attacking runs. A Focus modifies that Role — the same Stopper plays differently on a Defend Focus than a Balanced one. Role Familiarity is a separate axis entirely: it's tied to the individual player rather than the position, and it describes how well that player performs that Role.

Attributes and PlayStyles are a fourth axis, and they do the work on individual actions. Roles and Focuses shape positioning and movement; they don't make a bad finisher score. Keeping those straight is most of the way to understanding why a Role change sometimes does nothing.

EA's framing in the FC 27 FUT Deep Dive is that Roles are something you shape your squad around, not a constraint you fight:

"Player feedback has shown us how much players value the ability to shape Items around their preferred tactics and PlayStyle. Some of the most popular Evolutions in EA SPORTS FC™ 26 were those that added Role+ or Role++ familiarity, giving players more flexibility in how they used Items across their squad."

How many Player Roles does FC 27 actually have?

This is where trackers look like they contradict each other. fifauteam lists 37 Player Roles distributed across every position; FUT.GG's Roles hub says 31 Roles, each with 1 to 3 Focuses. Neither is wrong.

Counting Role slots position by position gives 37. Counting distinct Role names gives about 30, because seven Roles are available at more than one position: Holding and Deep-Lying Playmaker (CDM and CM), Playmaker and Half-Winger (CM and CAM), and Winger, Wide Playmaker and Inside Forward (Wide Midfielder and Winger). 37 slots minus 7 duplicated names lands on 30 — so a tracker quoting 31 counts names, and one quoting 37 counts what you can actually select in the Roles tab.

Here is the full list as community trackers have it, with each Role's available Focuses:

EA SPORTS FC Player Roles tab with a Role and Focus assigned to every position in the formation

Add up every Role-and-Focus pairing in that table and you get 76 combinations — my own count, not a published figure, allowing for position-locked Focuses (Winger's Versatile is RW/LW-only, Half-Winger's Support is CM-only and its Roaming is CAM-only). That is the honest answer to how much tactical depth is in here: not 37 choices, closer to 76. fifauteam notes more Alternate Roles are expected across the year.

What do Base, Role+ and Role++ actually change?

Familiarity has three displayed tiers, and a fourth state that isn't a tier.

  • Base — the player is in a recognised position and can perform any Role available there, with no bonus.
  • Role+ — the player is described as accomplished in that Role: better positioning, movement and off-ball decision-making while carrying out its responsibilities.
  • Role++ — the highest tier, for players particularly effective at that Role.
  • Out of Position — the yellow exclamation mark. The player still plays, but with a simplified Role and less effective positioning. This is not a Familiarity level; it's the absence of one.

The critical detail most guides skip: Role availability follows position, Familiarity follows the player. If a position is one of a player's primary or secondary positions, they can be assigned any Role available there — but their Familiarity may be Base in one Role and Role++ in another.

And here is what nobody can tell you, including this article: EA has never published what Role+ or Role++ change numerically. No percentage, no attribute modifier, no stated radius. I checked eight plausible EA Help URLs for a Player Roles, Role Familiarity, FC IQ or Tactics article — every one returns a 404. The mechanical description above comes from community trackers reading in-game tooltips. Any guide quoting a "+5% positioning" figure invented it.

What EA has said is directional, from the FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive: EA "significantly improved usage of regular Roles and Roles+, to bring them closer to Roles++." That is EA saying, in its own words, that it has been shrinking the gap this system creates.

Did FC 27 add new Player Roles?

No. Player Roles are not even an FC 27 feature — the system arrived in FC 25, and FC 27 is its third year. This is the single most-repeated error in FC 27 Roles coverage right now.

Search "FC 27 new Roles" and you will be told that FC 27 introduced four: Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, Box Crasher and Ball-Playing Keeper, alongside a new Versatile Focus and a reduced Out of Position penalty. All six of those changes appear, by name and in that order, in EA's FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive Pitch Notes:

"New Player Roles and Focuses — 4 new Roles. Wide Back: A central defender who opens wide to cover for the fullbacks… Inverted Wingback… Box Crasher… Ball-Playing Keeper… New Focus - Versatile. Replaces 'Complete'… Drastically reduced the negative impact of being Out of Position."

— EA SPORTS, FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive Pitch Notes

They are in FC 27 because they were added a year ago and carried forward. EA's FC 27 Pitch Notes — the Gameplay Deep Dive and the FUT Deep Dive — announce no new Player Roles at all. If you came here because a video promised you four new FC 27 Roles, that's the answer: you already had them last year.

So what did actually change for Roles in FC 27?

Two things, both EA-confirmed, and they pull in the same direction.

Inverted Wingback on a Build-Up Focus with EA's in-game Role description shown beneath it

One: every special Item launches with Role++ everywhere. From the FUT Deep Dive:

"Building on that feedback, all special Items released throughout the year in EA SPORTS FC™ 27 will receive Role++ familiarity across every role in their primary and secondary positions, giving players more freedom to shape their squad and tactics."

— EA SPORTS, FC 27 FUT Deep Dive Pitch Notes

The Launch Update Pitch Notes restate it for Campaign content specifically — "all Campaign Player Items will launch with all of their position's Roles++ unlocked" — and again for the Season 1 promo, where every Ones to Watch Item is "guaranteed at least 60 Pace and have all their Role++ in Position." If you are running a squad of promo cards, the Familiarity question is already answered for you. See our Ones to Watch guide for how those items upgrade across the season.

Two: attacking movement is deliberately less tied to your Role. EA's stated reason, from the same Deep Dive, is that "Roles can sometimes feel too strict in gameplay," which is why FC 27 introduced Attacking Spatial Awareness — so players "will be better able to take advantage of the space in front of them, rather than always sticking to their positions and Roles." The Gameplay Deep Dive puts it even more plainly, describing a winger who runs parallel to the defensive line and then curves into the box once the pass is played: "This helps attacking movement feel less limited to the player's role, more flexible, and more authentic."

Read those two changes together and the thesis of the "Roles have ruined the game" thread inverts. Roles are less decisive in FC 27 than in FC 26, by design, in EA's own words, for the second year running. What has changed is that movement is now more manual — your runs stop after a limited distance and need re-triggering — which feels like a Role problem and isn't. That's the same de-automation story behind the narrow 4-3-1-2 meta and the manual defending rework.

Which Roles and Focuses actually matter in Rivals and Champions?

Honest framing first: EA publishes no Role usage data and no Familiarity modifier, so anyone ranking Roles into tiers is ranking vibes. What does exist is a consistent pattern in player reports, and that beats a fake tier list.

Across today's Role++ thread, players converged on something repeatable: the upgrade is noticeable on attackers and hard to feel on midfielders and defenders. Two players said independently that Inside Forward and Striker Roles feel like they do something, while they notice no difference in midfield or defence. That maps onto the mechanics — attacking Roles drive runs, and runs are the behaviour you actually watch, whereas a Stopper's Familiarity expresses itself in positioning you rarely see on camera.

The practical order of operations that falls out of it:

  • Fix Out of Position first. A yellow exclamation mark is a real, EA-acknowledged penalty — a simplified Role and worse positioning. Familiarity upgrades anywhere else are worth less than removing one of these.
  • Pick the Focus before the Role. Most of the complaints that read as "my Role is broken" are a Focus problem: a Defender on Balanced steps out, a Defender on Defend doesn't. Same Role, opposite behaviour.
  • Spend on attackers, not the back line. If you're going to chase Familiarity, the player reports point at forwards and wide attackers.
  • Check the card before you spend anything. Special and Campaign items already have Role++ across both their positions. Paying for it is money set on fire.

That last point is the one that costs people coins. FC 27 sells twelve Roles++ Evolutions, one per position, at 7,500 coins or 150 FC Points each — repeatable, and open until 25 September 2027, so there is no deadline pressure to buy today. We broke the full economics down in the Evolution Store guide, including why you should pay coins rather than Points for this one. Note the price confusion doing the rounds: it is 7,500, not 15,000 — a player in today's thread had to be corrected on exactly that.

How do you change Player Roles in FC 27?

From the main Ultimate Team screen: press R1/RB three times to reach Club → Squad → press L3 for Squad Actions → Tactics → pick a tactic → Edit Tactic → press R1/RB once to open the Player Roles tab. Change what you need and save the tactic.

Three things to know before you go in. Roles are stored per tactic, not per player, so the same card can be a Poacher in one tactic and a False 9 in another — useful if you want a defensive setup to switch to without rebuilding your squad. If you're also touching depth and width while you're in there, the formations and custom tactics guide covers the settings around the Roles tab.

And the one that will waste your evening if nobody tells you: FC 27 has a live bug where custom tactics do not reliably save. Players across the EA Forums report Roles, positions and formation settings reverting after they leave the menu, so you only discover it at kick-off. If the Roles you set keep coming back wrong, you are not misreading the menu — see the tactics-not-saving bug and the fixes that work before you blame Familiarity for how your team is playing.

Squad right, rank wrong? Roles and Focuses fix positioning — they don't buy you the 15 matches a Champions run costs. If the grind is the bottleneck rather than the tactics, we can take that part.

FAQ

How many Player Roles are in FC 27? 37 selectable position-Role slots, which is roughly 30 distinct Role names once you account for the seven Roles that appear at two positions each. That's the source of the 31-versus-37 disagreement between FUT.GG and fifauteam — one is counting names, the other slots. The remaining one-Role gap between my count of 30 and FUT.GG's 31 is most likely an Alternate Role added since, which is why no count here is worth treating as permanent.

What does Role++ actually do in FC 27? Community trackers describe it as the highest Familiarity tier, meaning more refined positioning and off-ball decision-making in that specific Role. EA has never published a numerical effect, and there is no EA Help article on Player Roles — so treat any specific percentage you see as invented. Player reports consistently say the effect is easier to notice on attackers than on midfielders or defenders.

Are the four new Roles new in FC 27? No. Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, Box Crasher and Ball-Playing Keeper were all announced in EA's FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive, along with the Versatile Focus and the reduced Out of Position penalty. EA's FC 27 Pitch Notes announce no new Player Roles.

Do I need to buy Role++ for my promo cards? No — and this is the mistake worth avoiding. EA has confirmed that all special Items released during FC 27 launch with Role++ across every Role in their primary and secondary positions, and that all Campaign Items launch with their position's Roles++ already unlocked. The paid Roles++ Evolutions are only ever relevant to Items that didn't come with it.

Why do my players ignore their Role in FC 27? Usually because FC 27 is built that way. EA said Roles "can sometimes feel too strict" and added Attacking Spatial Awareness so attackers prioritise available space over their assigned position, describing the result as "less limited to the player's role." Combined with manually triggered runs now stopping after a limited distance, movement that used to be automatic is now your job — which reads as a Role bug and isn't one.

Does Out of Position still matter? Yes. A player outside their recognised positions operates with a simplified Role and less effective positioning, shown as a yellow exclamation mark. EA did say in the FC 26 Deep Dive that it "drastically reduced the negative impact" of it, and FC 27 carries that forward, but reduced is not removed — clearing an Out of Position marker is still the highest-value positioning fix available to you.
