FC 27 Players Switching Positions at Kick-Off? The Custom Tactics Bug and Every Fix That Works

Sam Okonkwo

You set a 4-2-1-3, put your best winger at RM, hit search — and the match kicks off with him at CAM, your CB taking corners and a full-back stranded on the left wing. This is the loudest non-connection complaint in FC 27's launch week, and it is not you misreading the new Roles system: players are reporting scrambled line-ups, tactics edits that silently revert, and benches that reset themselves between the menu and the pitch.

FC 27 has been fully live since its global release on September 25, 2026 (PC unlocked at 23:00 UTC on September 24 — the two dates get mixed up constantly), which means everybody is playing Season 1: Ones to Watch, chasing Destined for Glory upgrades, and grinding early Rivals placement on a squad that may not line up where you told it to. The latest patch, Title Update 1.0.1, does not fix it.

Below: the three distinct failure modes, what an out-of-position player actually costs you in FC 27's chemistry model, and the six fixes ranked by how reliably they hold.

Quick answer: FC 27 is scrambling squads in three separate ways — tactics edits not saving, starting positions swapping at kick-off, and bench order resetting. The most reliable community fix is to make every custom tactic slot use the same formation (vary only Roles and Focuses), delete unused tactic slots, and rebuild any tactic you imported from a shared code by hand. Before you search for a game, open Custom Tactics and confirm the line-up; if it is scrambled, go to Squad, move one player to the bench and back, then re-check. EA has not fixed this in Title Update 1.0.1 and has not published a dedicated acknowledgement as of September 27, 2026.

What Exactly Is the FC 27 Position-Switching Bug?

EA FC squad hub with the Team Management tile selected, the menu players have to leave before tactics edits revert

It is not one bug. Treating it as one is why people cycle through fixes that were never going to work. There are three failure modes, and they have different triggers.

Mode 1 — Positions Swap at Kick-Off (the loudest one)

You leave the menu with a correct line-up. The match loads and two players have traded places. The reported swaps cluster around adjacent slots: RM and CAM in a 4-2-1-3, RM and CM in a 4-4-1-1, a centre-back stepping into midfield. One EA Forums thread, "Players Automatically Change Positions When Starting a Match," describes it flatly: the RM and CAM positions are automatically swapped when the match starts. A separate thread titled "FC27 Critical Bug: Players Won't Stay in Assigned Positions" reports a player set as LM auto-moving even when they have proper chemistry and role cards — which rules out the "you just don't have chemistry there" explanation people keep offering.

The tell for Mode 1: the squad screen looks right, gameplay looks wrong.

Mode 2 — Tactics Edits Don't Save At All

You spend ten or fifteen minutes assigning Roles and Focuses, back out of Team Management, come back in, and it has reverted. EA Forums has this as its own thread ("Tactics Position Changes Not Saving"), and the poster's summary is the uncomfortable part: they had not found a reliable workaround. Another thread — "FC27 tactics menu is full of bugs" — reports a full session of role edits vanishing.

The tell for Mode 2: the change never survives leaving the menu, so you notice it in the menu, not in the match.

Mode 3 — Bench and Substitute Order Resets

Less discussed in Ultimate Team, very loud in Career Mode: you arrange the bench, and the game puts it back the way it wants. A community bug compilation on r/FifaCareers puts it bluntly — reorganising the bench is pointless because every time you set up the bench and substitutes the way you want, they revert to their default positions. The same has been reported in Online Seasons.

The tell for Mode 3: your starting XI is fine, your subs are in a different order than you left them.

Why Is FC 27 Doing This When FC 26 Mostly Didn't?

Nothing here is officially confirmed, so treat the causes as community-diagnosed and testable rather than as fact. Four triggers keep reappearing across launch-week reports, and they line up suspiciously well with what changed in FC 27.

Ultimate Team My Squads list showing saved squads with rating, chemistry and formation for each one

1. Multiple custom tactic slots with different formations. This is the strongest pattern. FC 27 lets you store several custom tactics, and when those slots disagree on formation, the game appears to apply the formation from one and the player placement from another. Players who collapsed all of their slots onto a single formation — varying only Roles and Focuses — report the swaps stopping.

2. Imported tactic codes. Multiple reports pin the moment it started on pasting in a shared tactics code, most often a 4-2-1-3. Dexerto's FC 27 wiki has the launch meta as exactly that shape: "The meta formation in EA FC 27 at launch is 4-2-1-3." When the whole player base imports the same code in week one, an import-path bug gets very visible very fast. Rebuilding the same tactic by hand on default settings has fixed it for several people.

3. Editing a formation inside an existing tactic. Changing the shape of a tactic you already built seems to leave stale position data behind. Building a fresh tactic from scratch, and never changing its formation afterwards, is the workaround.

4. A mismatch between the squad screen and the active tactic. A carry-over from FC 26: if the formation shown on the squad screen isn't the one the active custom tactic uses, the game reconciles them — badly, and in the direction you didn't want.

FIFPlay's formation list counts 44 formations in FC 27, and per fut.gg's Roles breakdown there are 31 Roles with one to three Focuses each. That is a lot of state to keep consistent across several tactic slots, which is exactly why "same formation everywhere" is such an effective blunt instrument.

What Does an Out-of-Position Player Actually Cost You?

This is where the bug stops being cosmetic. Per fifauteam's FC 27 positions guide, FC 27 dropped the old three-secondary-position cap, but the penalty for genuinely playing out of position stayed sharp: a player used out of position earns zero Individual Chemistry and contributes nothing to the squad's chemistry — though it "does not directly reduce the Individual Chemistry already earned by their teammates." Worse for how the match actually feels: the player "will use a simplified version of the assigned Role and perform its positional responsibilities less effectively."

Stack that against FC 27's Role Familiarity tiers — Base, Role+, Role++ — and the scale is obvious. EA's own Closed Beta Feedback Update spells out the mechanism: "Player Roles continue to determine the types of runs a player can make based on their position and Role… Role Familiarity then influences the urgency with which a player makes those available runs." A scrambled kick-off doesn't just cost you a chemistry boost. It downgrades the movement of the two players you built the shape around, for the whole match.

If your team suddenly feels sluggish, ignores obvious runs and drifts into nonsense shapes, that is the signature. PCMag's FC 27 review describes the same effect from the settings side: "Get the combination wrong and players can look genuinely lost, ignore obvious spaces or drift into positions that make absolutely no tactical sense." The bug does that to you without your permission.

The Six Fixes, Ranked by How Reliably They Hold

1. Make every custom tactic slot use the same formation — 9/10. The highest-success fix in circulation. Pick your shape, then set every stored tactic to that formation and differentiate the slots only by Roles, Focuses and depth/tempo sliders. If you want a genuinely different formation, swap it in deliberately and re-check the line-up before searching.

2. Delete every custom tactic you aren't using — 8/10. Fewer slots, fewer opportunities for the game to reconcile two conflicting layouts. Cheap, fast, and it survives restarts.

3. Rebuild imported tactics by hand — 8/10. If your problems started after pasting a code, delete that tactic and build the identical shape manually on default tactics. Several reports have this as the fix that finally stuck. Annoying, but a five-minute job against a bug that costs you matches.

4. Never change formation inside an existing tactic — 7/10. Preventative rather than curative. Want a new shape? New tactic slot. Do not morph an old one.

5. The pre-match reset routine — 6/10 (reliable, but it's a ritual, not a fix). Before you search: open Custom Tactics and check the line-up. If it's scrambled, go to the Squad screen, move one player to the bench or reserves and back, return to tactics, confirm it's correct, then search. It works often enough to be worth the twenty seconds, especially before a Champions or Rivals game.

6. Full restart of the game (not just the mode) — 5/10. Sometimes clears a stuck session state. Won't touch the underlying formation-conflict cause, so if it comes back immediately, go to fix 1.

What does not work, judging by launch week: clearing chemistry links, re-applying role cards, changing player instructions, or reinstalling the game. Save yourself the download.

Which Should You Try First?

If your positions look right in the menu and wrong in the match → fix 1, then 2. If your edits won't save at all → fix 3 (if you imported anything) then 4. If it started the day you copied a meta tactic off social → fix 3, immediately. If you're about to play a Champions qualifier right now → fix 5, and do the cleanup after.

Has EA Acknowledged It?

Not in a patch, and not in a numbered Pitch Notes article. Title Update 1.0.1 — the only FC 27 patch as of September 27, 2026 — shipped roughly ten fixes across The Grounds, gameplay input and Ultimate Team, and none of them touch tactics saving or position assignment. EA also distributed those notes through the official EA SPORTS FC Discord and the @EASFCDirect account rather than publishing them on ea.com first, which is why the patch felt invisible to a lot of players. Our FC 27 Title Update 1.0.1 breakdown already flagged that the position-swap issue was going unaddressed.

EA's stated intent for the launch patch was deliberately conservative — from @EASFCDirect on September 22: "This will not be an update that changes gameplay balance and tuning significantly. We want to continue preserving the Early Access…" A tactics-persistence fix is a back-end change rather than a balance change, so it can arrive in 1.0.2 without breaking that promise. Nothing has been announced.

One source conflict worth printing, because it will confuse you if you go looking: fifauteam's FC 27 tactics guide states that exiting the Team Tactics menu will permanently save any changes made. That is the documented behaviour. It is the opposite of what a visible slice of the player base is experiencing in launch week. Trust your own line-up check over the documentation right now.

How Do You Stop This From Costing You Rivals and Champions Points?

Two things, and only one of them is a workaround.

The workaround is the fix ladder above plus the pre-match check. The structural answer is a squad that doesn't depend on out-of-position players in the first place. Every slot you fill with a player who genuinely holds that position is a slot the bug cannot quietly downgrade to zero chemistry and a simplified Role — because there is nothing to scramble. That means either buying the player who actually plays there, or adding the position through an Evolution: FC 27's Evolutions Pathways hand out extra positions, Roles and Role++ familiarity, which is the cheapest way to make a player legitimate in two places at once.

Playing catch-up in launch week while everyone else is already in Division 3? These are the three things that actually move the needle in week one:

  • FC 27 Coins — fill your problem slots with players who genuinely play there, instead of forcing a CM onto the wing and hoping the tactics stick.
  • FC 27 Evolutions Boost — get positions, Roles and Role++ familiarity onto the players you already own, the legitimate way to cover two slots.
  • FC 27 FUT Champions Boost — if launch-week bugs have already cost you qualification, bank the Season 1 rewards anyway.

FAQ

Is the FC 27 position-switching bug the same as players being out of position? No, and the distinction matters. Being out of position is a rule — zero Individual Chemistry and a simplified Role. The bug moves players you correctly placed in position, and it does so after you've left the menu, so you only find out at kick-off.

Does FC 27 Title Update 1.0.1 fix tactics not saving? No. 1.0.1 covers The Grounds, gameplay input, online stability and Ultimate Team UI fixes. Nothing in it addresses tactics persistence or position assignment, and EA has not announced a fix for 1.0.2.

Will deleting my custom tactics lose my saved Roles? Yes — deleting a tactic slot deletes the Roles and Focuses stored in it. Screenshot your working setup before you start pruning, then rebuild on a single shared formation.

Why did it start right after I used a tactics code? Imported codes are the single most common trigger reported in launch week. Delete the imported tactic and rebuild the same shape manually on default tactics; that is what has worked for most people who traced it to an import.

Is this happening in Career Mode too? Yes, mostly as the bench and substitute variant — arranged benches reverting to default order — plus scrambled line-ups after squad changes. Same workarounds apply: one formation, no imported codes, verify before you kick off.

Does chemistry or a role card prevent the swap? No. The clearest EA Forums report specifically notes the player had proper chemistry and role cards and still auto-moved. Chemistry is what you lose when it happens, not what protects you from it.
