FC 27 How to Defend: Manual Defending Guide for Launch Week (AI Auto-Tackles Are Gone)

Quick answer (TLDR): Your defenders are not bugged. In EA SPORTS FC 27 EA deliberately removed AI auto-tackling — AI defenders now hold position and support the play instead of winning the ball for you. To defend you must switch manually, jockey, and time your own stand tackle, which EA made faster and longer-reaching than in FC 26 to compensate. Three more things changed: Team Press has zero effect while the ball is in your defensive third, Teammate Contain marks from further away, and spamming Shoulder Challenge makes your defender stick out an arm and lose speed. EA has also said it does not plan significant gameplay balance changes in its early Title Updates — so this is the game for a while. Learn it now.

Current FC 27 phase: day three of early access. Ultimate Edition, Ultimate Edition Plus and EA Play Pro players have been in since 17 September 23:00 UTC on PC and 18 September 00:00 local time on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo. Worldwide launch is 24 September 23:00 UTC on PC / 25 September 00:00 local time everywhere else. The live Ultimate Team promo right now is Ones to Watch (17 September – 22 October); Destined for Glory does not start until worldwide launch day.

Every mechanic below is taken from EA's own FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive (29 July 2026) and the Closed Beta Feedback Update (3 September 2026). Where something is a player report rather than an EA statement, it is labelled as one.

Why do my defenders just stand there in FC 27?

Because EA turned that behaviour off on purpose. This is the single biggest gameplay change of the year and it is why early-access Reddit has spent three days arguing about whether defending is "broken".

Principal Gameplay Designer Gilliard Lopes put it in one sentence in the Gameplay Deep Dive:

"Previously, AI-controlled defenders could automatically attempt to win the ball when a dribbler came close enough to them. In FC 27, defenders will now rely more on their positioning and support the play until you take control and choose when to make a tackle."

Three consequences you are feeling right now:

  • Your back four will not tackle for you. EA: "we want tackling to be an intentional player-led action, while your AI teammates will now support the play instead of winning possession outright for you."
  • AI interception reach was cut. EA explicitly states that "a manually-controlled defender will be able to reach further than an AI-controlled defender". The uncontrolled centre-back that used to poke the ball away at the edge of the box now physically cannot reach it.
  • Your AI defenders can still win the ball — just not by tackling. EA notes they gain possession on loose balls or when a dribbler runs directly into them, and that a trapping animation may look like a leg being stuck out, but "the defender is reacting to the ball rather than initiating a tackle."

One important scope note that a lot of launch-week posts are getting wrong: these AI Defending changes apply to Competitive gameplay only. Authentic Gameplay CPU AI is tuned separately, and EA listed its Authentic changes (difficulty calibration between Professional/World Class/Legendary, Sliding Tackle Frequency slider recalibration, CPU attacking and 1v1 behaviour) in the Closed Beta Feedback Update instead.

What did EA give manual defenders in return?

It is not a pure nerf. EA rebuilt the manual toolkit at the same time, and these are the buffs most players have not noticed yet:

ToolFC 26FC 27
AI auto-tackle when dribbler comes closeYesRemoved (Competitive)
AI interception reachFullReduced — manual defender reaches further
Jockey speed (manually controlled)BaselineIncreased
Manually-triggered stand tackle rangeBaselineIncreased
Teammate Contain marking distanceCloseSlightly longer
Team Press in your defensive thirdWorksNo effect at all
Shoulder Challenge spamEventually triggersArm out, speed lost
Bruiser+ extra benefitFullSlightly reduced

EA's stated goal, verbatim: "players who manually switch, jockey, time tackles, and position themselves effectively to increase their chances of winning possession." That is the whole design brief in one line — and it is also the checklist for how you should be playing.

There is a fourth buff hiding in the passing section. FC 27 through passes "no longer heavily assist you by steering toward open lanes away from your aim" — they strictly follow directional input, which EA says is deliberately "giving manual defenders a fair chance to read the play and intercept." If you are standing in the passing lane in FC 27, the ball now actually comes to you.

How should you defend in FC 27, step by step?

Run this loop. It is boring, it works, and it is the same loop every good player was already using in FC 26 — the difference is that FC 27 no longer lets you skip it.

  • Switch early, not late. Manual switching is now the price of entry, because the defender you are not controlling has reduced reach. Switch to the man on the ball's path before contact, not after the dribbler is past him.
  • Jockey by default. Hold jockey and shepherd the attacker sideways or towards the touchline. Jockey speed is up in FC 27, so jockeying no longer means conceding a metre per second to a pacey winger.
  • Use Teammate Contain as a delay, not a tackle. It now marks from a slightly longer distance, so it buys you time to get your own man into position. It will not win the ball for you.
  • Time a single stand tackle. The range was increased, so you can commit from slightly further out than in FC 26. One tackle. Not three.
  • Only go shoulder-to-shoulder when you are level. More on that below — this is the input people are burning most.
  • Drop your depth if you are conceding in behind. Defensive Depth is now honoured much more literally than it was.

The single most common launch-week mistake, visible all over r/EASportsFC and r/fut this week, is players spamming the tackle button from behind the attacker and then reporting that "defending is broken". EA specifically designed against that input pattern. Player replies in those same threads are blunt about it — the consensus among early-access players who are winning games is that manual defending is now a skill you train, not a setting you toggle.

Why doesn't Team Press work in my own box anymore?

Because EA removed it there. This is the most quotable, most misunderstood change of launch week, straight from the Closed Beta Feedback Update:

"Team Press will now have no effect while the ball is in your defensive third."

EA's reasoning is that Team Press was "too effective when used close to your own goal", where "AI teammates could automatically close down opponents and take too much of the defensive responsibility away from the user." So the panic-press you used to spam as the opponent entered your box is now a dead input — you are pressing a button that does literally nothing.

Higher up the pitch Team Press still works, with a documented trade-off: defenders can step towards their marked players but are "less effective at applying pressure than midfielders and forwards", and as they step up they "can become more susceptible to passes played in behind the defensive line." Translation: Team Press is now a midfield tool for winning the ball in the opposition half, and a liability if you hold it while a fast striker is running the channel.

Defensive Depth also got fixed. EA heard that lines sat higher than the slider suggested and adjusted it so "lower depth settings are more clearly reflected in how your defensive line positions itself, with defenders retreating sooner and maintaining a more conservative position to leave less space in behind." If you are getting cut apart by through balls, drop depth before you blame your centre-backs. One caveat EA states directly: "setting a low depth doesn't mean your defenders will stay deep in every situation."

Are Shoulder Challenges and Bruiser still worth using?

Yes — but only from the correct position, and the spam is punished now.

EA's three rules from the Closed Beta Feedback Update:

  • Shoulder Challenges are most effective side-by-side with the ball carrier, "rather than attempting a challenge from behind."
  • Repeatedly pressing Shoulder Challenge in quick succession now "will cause the defender to stick out an arm and lose speed, making it more difficult to chase down an opponent by repeatedly using the input." That is an actual speed penalty for button-mashing.
  • Strength still matters and Bruiser still helps — but EA "slightly reduced the additional benefit provided by Bruiser+."
There is one more reason your challenges are bouncing off: Off-Balance Dribbling. FC 27 lets high Balance/Agility/Dribbling attackers keep control after a collision, bump or shoulder challenge — they enter a stumbling animation but the attacking player retains control. EA lists it as available on **PlayStation 5, Xbox Series XS, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 only**. Against an elite dribbler, the clean side-by-side shoulder is no longer a guaranteed turnover.

Do I need to buy faster defenders in FC 27?

This is the most-asked question in r/fut right now, and the honest answer is: pace matters slightly less than last year, raw Acceleration and Sprint Speed matter more.

EA rebalanced AcceleRATE after the Closed Beta:

"We've slightly reduced the impact of AcceleRATE profiles on a player's running performance, bringing Explosive, Controlled, and Lengthy players a little closer together. This places greater emphasis on a player's Acceleration and Sprint Speed Attributes."

So the FC 26 habit of shopping for the AcceleRATE profile rather than the number is worth less in FC 27. Two more details:

  • Female players now need to be at least 5'8" (172 cm) to be eligible for the Lengthy profile in FC 27 — EA raised that threshold explicitly.
  • The men's Lengthy requirements (minimum height 185 cm, Strength 65+, Strength − Agility ≥ 4, Acceleration 40+) are FC 26 values from Title Update 1.4.0 and are expected to carry over. EA has not republished the full FC 27 eligibility list, so treat them as a working assumption, not a confirmed FC 27 fact.
  • Manually triggered runs now stop after a limited distance, which EA framed as part of reducing how much Lengthy attackers could exploit long runs. EA has never published that distance — ignore any guide that quotes you a metre figure.

Two PlayStyles quietly moved the defensive needle too, and both favour cheap defenders over expensive ones. Intercept now gives "increased reach and improved chances of retaining possession… for Non-PlayStyle players who have a high Interceptions Attribute." Jockey got "increased jockey sprint acceleration for non-PlayStyle players" while the exit-jockey sprint boost for Jockey and Jockey+ was reduced. In total EA rebalanced 10 PlayStyles in FC 27 — and in the defensive ones, the gap between a PlayStyle holder and a good raw-attribute player narrowed.

Practical squad advice for early access: buy 80+ Acceleration and Sprint Speed at centre-back and full-back before you pay a premium for a Lengthy tag or a Jockey+ card. That is also roughly where the early-access market is pricing defenders — see our FC 27 launch-week trading guide for where the 84–85 rated fodder is sitting and our sell-or-hold timeline for when those prices crash.

Which tactics settings should I change first?

Three changes, in this order:

  • Defensive Depth down if you are conceding through balls. The slider is now honoured far more literally than it was in FC 26.
  • Stop holding Team Press in your own third — the input does nothing there. Save it for the opposition half.
  • Check Role Familiarity on your midfielders. EA confirmed in the Closed Beta Feedback Update that Player Roles still determine which runs a player makes and that "Role Familiarity then influences the urgency", including Role+ and Role++. That applies to defensive positioning too, and it interacts with the FC 27 chemistry changes — check which links you actually have before you shuffle the back line. If you are still assembling a squad, our Squad Foundations league guide covers the pick you cannot change later.

One bonus: Player Lock got a risk attached. When an opponent locks away from the ball carrier, that carrier "will no longer automatically dribble around or avoid defenders" and will keep moving in the direction it was already travelling, and CPU pass error during Player Lock is slightly increased. If you can spot a Player Lock, that is now your cleanest turnover window in the game.

Will EA patch defending in FC 27?

Not quickly, and you should plan around that. EA pre-committed to a measured launch period in the Closed Beta Feedback Update:

"For EA SPORTS FC™ 27, we want to take a measured approach and do not plan on making significant gameplay balance changes in our early Title Updates."

EA's reasoning is that the meta "can evolve quickly during the opening weeks as players learn new mechanics" and that it does not want to react to early trends. Bugs and unintended behaviours will still be fixed — EA gives the example of an unintended Goalkeeper behaviour — and it notes those targeted fixes can still indirectly shift balance. But a broad AI-defending buff in Title Update 1 is explicitly not the plan.

There is also a live bug worth separating from the design change: early-access players are reporting a couch co-op contain bug and a run of Rivals disconnects. Those are server/bug issues, not the manual-defending change, and they sit squarely in the category EA said it would still patch. Report them through the FC Feedback Hub rather than waiting for a balance patch that EA has said is not coming.

If you are pushing for rank while you relearn defending, the Division Rivals reset rules and the FUT Champions qualification guide are the two posts to read next — losing early games to a mechanic you have not learned yet is an expensive way to find your Division.

FAQ

Why won't my defenders tackle in FC 27? They are not broken. EA removed AI auto-tackling in Competitive gameplay: AI defenders now hold their positioning and support the play until you switch to them and commit a tackle yourself. AI interception reach was also reduced, so the uncontrolled defender genuinely cannot reach balls he used to intercept.

Does Team Press still work in FC 27? Only outside your defensive third. EA's wording is that Team Press "will now have no effect while the ball is in your defensive third." Higher up the pitch it works, but defenders press less effectively than midfielders and forwards and become more vulnerable to passes played in behind.

Is manual defending better than AI defending in FC 27? It is the only defending. EA increased manual jockey speed and manual stand-tackle range specifically to compensate for the AI nerf, and states that a manually-controlled defender reaches further than an AI one. Switching early and jockeying is now strictly better than waiting for your AI to intervene.

Why does my defender stick his arm out and slow down? That is EA's anti-spam penalty on Shoulder Challenge. Pressing it repeatedly in quick succession makes the defender stick out an arm and lose speed. Use one well-timed challenge from a side-by-side position instead of mashing it while chasing from behind.

Do I need Lengthy defenders in FC 27? Less than in FC 26. EA reduced the impact of AcceleRATE profiles, bringing Explosive, Controlled and Lengthy closer together and putting more weight on Acceleration and Sprint Speed attributes. Buy the attributes, not the profile. Note that female players now need to be 5'8" (172 cm) to qualify for Lengthy.

Will EA buff AI defending in a Title Update? EA has said it does not plan significant gameplay balance changes in its early Title Updates, and that it wants to let the meta settle first. Bugs and unintended behaviours are still in scope for fixes — a deliberate design change like AI auto-tackle removal is not.
