FC 27 Ones to Watch: Are OTW Cards Free? Dates, How to Get Them and Every Upgrade Rule

Quick Answer: Yes — Ones to Watch is a play-to-earn promo in FC 27. EA's Launch Update Pitch Notes (14 September 2026) confirms OTW items come from the Season Pass, SBCs and Objectives; packs are not listed as a source. Season 1: Ones to Watch runs Thursday 17 September to Thursday 22 October 2026, opening the same day as the Web App. Items below 83 OVR are boosted to 83, every OTW item is guaranteed at least 60 Pace and all Role++ in position, and each gains +1 OVR per Team of the Week, Star Performer or Player of the Month inclusion, plus a one-time +1 if the player's club wins three of its next six league matches after 18 September. You climb the ladder with Season Points: 15–100 SP per eligible match, capped at 850 SP per day.

EA SPORTS FC 27 launches globally on 25 September 2026, with early access from 18 September for Ultimate and Ultimate Plus (PC unlocks 23:00 UTC the previous evening in both cases). But the promo that decides how your first month goes starts earlier than that — and EA published the details today.

The most-upvoted FC 27 thread on r/fut this week was a blunt one: are OTW cards free in FC 27? Fair question. Ones to Watch has spent most of its life as a pack promo, which meant chasing it with coins or FC Points. This year EA has moved where the cards live.

What Is Ones to Watch in FC 27?

Ones to Watch is the summer-transfer promo: dynamic player items tied to real footballers who changed clubs in the off-season, which upgrade during the year as the real player performs. EA's Launch Update Pitch Notes frames it as the anchor of the whole first Season:

"Season 1 marks the return of the fan-favourite Ones to Watch, back bigger than ever to celebrate the summer transfers set to shape the new football season."

— EA SPORTS, FC 27 Launch Update Pitch Notes, 14 September 2026

The structural change this year is that Seasons now have themes. EA states that "each Season will have a distinct theme connecting its Campaigns through one wider journey," and that Season 1 brings together Ones to Watch, Destined for Glory and Future Stars. So OTW is not a one-week drop; it's the umbrella the first five weeks of FUT 27 sit under.

When Does FC 27 Ones to Watch Start and End?

EA published the window explicitly: Season 1: Ones to Watch is live from Thursday, 17 September 2026 to Thursday, 22 October 2026 — a 35-day Season that opens on the same date as the Web App.

Two consequences. The Season clock starts before most people own the game — the free Web App on 17 September is your entry point either way (our Web App day-one checklist covers the login flow, and the transfer market unlock guide explains why in-game market access does not automatically unlock the Web App market). And early-access buyers get a genuine seven-day head start on Season Points.

Are FC 27 Ones to Watch Cards Free?

Short answer: yes, in the sense that matters — every source EA has published for Ones to Watch is a play-to-earn source. EA's wording is precise:

"Earn Ones to Watch Player Items through the Season Pass, with select players also available through SBCs and Objectives from Early Access."

— EA SPORTS, FC 27 Launch Update Pitch Notes

That's three confirmed routes: Season Pass levels, Squad Building Challenges, and Objectives. EA's Launch Update does not name packs as a source — a real departure from how OTW has usually worked. It does list "Ones to Watch Themed Player SBCs" among early-access content, alongside Team of the Week 1 and 2, Challenge and Upgrade SBCs, Evolutions and Squad Foundations. Be careful how far you take that, though: EA has not said OTW items are excluded from packs, it simply hasn't listed packs as a route. Treat "no OTW in packs" as an inference, not a confirmed fact.

The Season Pass caveat. The Season Pass has two parallel reward tracks: the base track everyone progresses, and the optional paid Premium Pass. EA's help documentation for the previous title — no FC 27 version exists yet — is clear that Premium is not a shortcut:

"Premium Pass is an optional upgrade to Season Pass. It unlocks an additional reward track that runs alongside the free Season Pass track. Both tracks use the same SP progression."

— EA Help, "How to use Premium Pass in EA SPORTS FC 26"

Two things follow, assuming this carries over. Buying Premium does not make you level faster — it adds rewards at levels you were going to reach anyway. And because upgrading mid-Season instantly unlocks all Premium rewards for levels already reached, there's no penalty for waiting to see whether the Premium OTW items are worth it. EA published Season 1 reward-track screenshots showing named OTW rewards, but has not stated which items sit on the base track and which sit on Premium — so don't let anyone sell you a definitive free-versus-paid split yet. We broke that decision down in Premium Pass: coins vs FC Points.

How Do You Earn Ones to Watch Items Fastest?

Since OTW sits on the Season Pass, the whole game is Season Points (SP) — and this is where FC 27 changes materially. EA is moving reward weight out of weekly payouts and into every single match:

"You'll also earn between 15 & 100 Season Points per eligible match depending on result and mode, up to 850 Season Points per day."

— EA SPORTS, FC 27 Launch Update Pitch Notes

That daily cap is the number to build your plan around. Some arithmetic EA hasn't done for you:

  • 850 SP/day × 35 Season days = 29,750 SP available from match play alone across Season 1.
  • 850 SP/day × 7 early-access days = 5,950 SP bankable before standard-edition players start on 25 September.

Both are ceilings, and EA has not published how much SP each Season Pass level costs — so nobody can honestly tell you "X days to level 30" yet. Treat any such number this week as a guess.

Squad Battles now counts for more than rewards: EA confirms it awards Champions Qualification Points in FC 27, and that "the Division 6 requirement for Champions qualification has been removed," so PvE players can work toward Champions entirely offline — see our CQP qualification guide.

Match coins are up sharply, and more rewards are tradeable. Against "the roughly 500 to 600 FUT Coins typically earned from a match in EA SPORTS FC™ 26," EA says Champions and Rivals "will have the potential to reward several times more Coins." It also states that "a significantly higher proportion of rewards across Objectives, game modes, and other areas of FUT will be tradeable," with all Rivals pack rewards tradeable at launch. That matters for OTW: the transfer market, not packs, is your realistic route to a specific player you missed. We ranked the modes by hourly income in coins per hour: which mode pays best at launch.

Short on time before the Season Pass clock runs out? Season 1 is 35 days and the SP cap is daily — miss a day and it's gone:

One honest note: EA's User Agreement prohibits buying, selling or transferring coins for real money, and enforcement can include coin removal, a transfer-market ban or an account ban. Nobody can promise zero risk. A sane provider avoids cheats, bots and injectors, uses Comfort Trade and paces delivery — the residual risk is yours to weigh.

How Do Ones to Watch Upgrades Work in FC 27?

This is the part that decides whether OTW items are worth chasing, and the part the community is most cynical about — the annual complaint is that OTW cards never climb because EA controls who makes Team of the Week. FC 27 widens the triggers. First, the item floor:

"Ones to Watch Player Items rated 83 OVR or higher retain their Base Item Attributes, while those below are boosted to 83. Every Ones to Watch Item is also guaranteed at least 60 Pace and have all their Role++ in Position."

— EA SPORTS, FC 27 Launch Update Pitch Notes

So no unusable 78-rated OTW filler this year, and the guaranteed 60 Pace floor plus full Role++ familiarity means even the low-end cards are playable in a launch squad. Then the upgrade triggers:

TriggerUpgradeRepeatable
Team of the Week inclusion+1 OVRYes, per inclusion
Star Performer inclusion+1 OVRYes, per inclusion
Player of the Month inclusion+1 OVRYes, per inclusion
Club wins 3 of its next 6 domestic league matches after 18 September+1 OVRNo — one time only

That fourth line is the genuinely new one, and the answer to the "EA decides who upgrades" complaint: it's a team trigger, not an individual one. A squad-rotation signing at a strong club can bank a +1 without ever starting a match. EA also notes OTW items "remain eligible for upgrades throughout the football season" — the Season ends 22 October, the upgrades do not.

One more lever: EA is expanding Training Camp Evolutions, "accessible entry points to boost lower-rated players," but on a tighter schedule — impactful Evos arrive "just at a lower frequency and released at more intentional moments." Our best Evolutions to start at launch guide covers the Pathways system.

Which Ones to Watch Players Should You Target?

Ignore anyone ranking OTW cards by predicted price. Rank them by upgrade probability, because that's what the promo is:

  • Club strength over player fame. The one-time +1 is a club-form trigger — three wins in six league games. A rotation player at a title-chasing club beats a star at a mid-table side.
  • Nailed-on starters in weak-ish leagues. TOTW and Player of the Month inclusions accumulate faster where competition for those slots is thinner.
  • Position matters for the base item. A sub-83 defender boosted to 83 with 60 Pace is a very different card to a sub-83 winger boosted the same way — the Pace floor helps wide attackers least.

Structural context: EA is running roughly five fewer Campaign weeks with smaller squads (20 Campaign Squad items in FC 26 against 15 in FC 27) and cutting maximum PlayStyles+ per item from five to three — both aimed at making cards age more slowly.

How Does Ones to Watch Fit the Rest of Season 1?

Three connected pieces, plus one side event:

  • Ones to Watch — 17 September to 22 October, Season Pass / SBCs / Objectives.
  • Destined for Glory — from 25 September, the first Campaign after early access. Community-voted, led by cover star Kylian Mbappé, who EA says received the most votes, alongside Morgan Rogers, Matheus Fernandes, Alexander Isak and Bryan Mbeumo. EA's campaign art shows Mbappé at 91 ST, Isak 88 ST, Rogers 87 CAM, Mbeumo 86 RM and Fernandes 85 CM. They upgrade from 18 September on real-world domestic-league performance, with milestones set by position.
  • Future Stars — EA's third pillar of the Season 1 theme, with no date published yet.

The side event is Ones We Watched, easy to confuse with the promo itself: a Single Player Live Event series opening Season 1, built around OTW items from FUT 18, FUT 19 and FUT 20, rewarding Retro Cosmetic Evolutions through the Season Ladder and Evolution Store. It's a pure PvE route to Season Points, so it feeds the grind above.

There's also a collection layer: EA confirms the first post-launch Gallery Set arrives at worldwide launch, the Season 1 (Combined Rarities) Set, combining Ones to Watch, Destined for Glory and Future Stars items. Gallery history persists even after an item leaves your club — so don't quick-sell an OTW card purely because it stopped being meta.

What Hasn't EA Confirmed Yet?

The gaps, because plenty of sites will paper over them this week:

  • Whether OTW items appear in packs. Not listed as a source; not explicitly ruled out.
  • The free-track versus Premium-track split for OTW rewards on the Season 1 pass.
  • SP cost per Season Pass level, which is why no credible "days to max" figure exists yet.
  • The full OTW squad list. EA named the Destined for Glory five; it has not published the OTW roster.
  • Which modes count as "eligible matches" for the 15–100 SP payout, and Future Stars timing.

Expect most of these in the 17 September content drop rather than another Pitch Notes.

FAQ

Are FC 27 Ones to Watch cards free? Yes — every route EA has published is earned by playing: the Season Pass, SBCs and Objectives. Packs are not listed as a source. The one paid element is the optional Premium Pass, which adds a parallel reward track; per EA's FC 26 help documentation it does not make you level faster and can be bought later, with earned levels unlocking retroactively.

When does FC 27 Ones to Watch start? Thursday 17 September 2026, the same day the Web App goes live, and it runs to Thursday 22 October 2026. Early access players can start banking Season Points from 18 September (17 September at 23:00 UTC on PC).

Do Ones to Watch cards still upgrade after Season 1 ends? Yes. EA states OTW items "remain eligible for upgrades throughout the football season," so the 22 October end date closes the Season, not the upgrade path.

How many Season Points can I earn per day in FC 27? Between 15 and 100 per eligible match depending on result and mode, capped at 850 Season Points per day. Across the full 35-day Season that is a ceiling of 29,750 SP from match play.

What's the difference between Ones to Watch and Ones We Watched? Ones to Watch is the Season 1 promo of upgradeable summer-transfer items. Ones We Watched is a Single Player Live Event series themed around OTW cards from FUT 18, 19 and 20, rewarding Retro Cosmetic Evolutions through the Season Ladder and Evolution Store.

Is it worth buying the Premium Pass for the OTW items? Not on day one. EA's FC 26 documentation states that upgrading mid-Season instantly unlocks every Premium reward for levels already reached, so waiting costs nothing and lets you see the actual items first.
