Quick answer (updated 22 October 2026): If Fortnite won't connect, check status.epicgames.com first. That's Epic's own live dashboard, and it shows whether Login, Matchmaking, the Item Shop and other services are up. When we checked it at 03:30 UTC on 22 October 2026, every Fortnite component read "Operational". The next big outage you can plan around is the v43.00 season-change downtime on 1 November 2026. That's the day Epic's Battle Pass page lists as the end of Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override". Recent season changes have taken the game offline for about 4–6 hours. A separate Epic Online Services maintenance is booked for 10 November 2026, 06:00–07:30 UTC.
Key takeaways
- Official source: status.epicgames.com plus the @FortniteStatus account on X. Everything else, Downdetector included, is just crowd reports.
- Next scheduled downtime: v43.00 on 1 November 2026, the switch from Override to the next season. Epic hasn't posted the exact start time yet (checked 22 Oct).
- Typical length: the last five season changes logged on the Fortnite Wiki took 4 to 6 hours. Mid-season updates (v42.10–v42.40) are usually shorter.
- Usual start time: the v42.00 season launch started at 2 AM ET (6 AM UTC). Mid-season updates have started at 4 AM ET (8 AM UTC).
- Daylight-saving trap: US clocks fall back on 1 November 2026, the same day as v43.00. From that morning, ET is UTC−5, not UTC−4.
- Status page green but you still can't play? Then the problem is on your end. Jump to the fix checklist below.
Are Fortnite servers down right now? How to check in 30 seconds
There are three places to check. Go through them in this order, because they get less authoritative as you go down the list:
- status.epicgames.com. Epic's public status page breaks Fortnite into separate components: Website, Game Services, Login, Parties/Friends/Messaging, Voice Chat, Matchmaking, Stats and Leaderboards, Item Shop, Fortnite Crew, plus LEGO Fortnite and Fortnite Festival matchmaking. Each one shows Operational, Degraded Performance, Partial Outage, Major Outage or Maintenance. If Login or Game Services isn't green, it's not you.
- @FortniteStatus on X. This is where Epic posts downtime start times and the "servers are back" message, usually before the status page catches up.
- Downdetector and r/FortNiteBR. These are fast, but they only count complaints. A spike tells you lots of players are having trouble. It doesn't tell you why, and a big ISP or PlayStation Network outage looks exactly the same.
Here's a simple rule. If the status page shows Maintenance, wait. If it shows Partial/Major Outage, wait and watch @FortniteStatus. If it's all green, troubleshoot your own setup.
The status page also covers Epic Online Services (EOS): Sessions, Lobbies, Friends, Presence and so on. An EOS problem can break parties and invites even while Fortnite itself shows green, so scroll down if only party joins are failing.
When is the next Fortnite downtime? v43.00 on 1 November 2026
The next confirmed big downtime is the season change. Two Epic sources line up on the date:
- Epic's Battle Pass page says the Override pass "Ends November 1, 2026 Eastern Time."
- Epic's v42.40 Known Issues post on its developer forum lists bug fixes as "Fix targeted for v43.00 (November 1)."
So v43.00 lands on 1 November 2026, and that's the update that ends Chapter 7 Season 4. Two things are still not confirmed as of 22 October: the exact downtime start time and what comes next. Leakers point to a short mini-season before Chapter 8. Epic hasn't announced it, so treat that as a leak (we cover the leaks in Fortnite next season: mini-season or Chapter 8?).
What time will v43.00 downtime start?
Epic hasn't said yet. It normally posts the time on @FortniteStatus the day before. The most recent season launch is the best guide. For v42.00 (Override, 20 August 2026), @FortniteStatus posted:
"Downtime for v42.00 begins at 2 AM ET (6 AM UTC) with matchmaking ending shortly beforehand."
The four mid-season updates since then (v42.10, v42.20, v42.30 and v42.40) started at 4 AM ET. For v42.20 Epic wrote "Downtime for v42.20 starts at 4 AM ET with matchmaking ending shortly beforehand." Expect v43.00 to follow one of those two patterns. We'll update this page as soon as Epic posts the real time.
The daylight-saving catch on 1 November
US daylight saving time ends at 2 AM local time on Sunday, 1 November 2026 (NIST), the same day as v43.00. Clocks jump back from 2 AM to 1 AM, so the 1:00–1:59 AM hour happens twice. Before the change ET is UTC−4 (2 AM EDT = 06:00 UTC). After it ET is UTC−5, so 2 AM EST = 07:00 UTC. A "2 AM ET" start that day therefore lands an hour later in UTC than the August one. Trust the UTC time in Epic's post when you convert to your own time zone.
| Region | Clock change | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| US / Canada | Clocks go back 1 hour on 1 Nov 2026 | Use the UTC time Epic posts, not ET |
| UK / EU | Clocks go back on 25 Oct 2026, a week earlier | UK = UTC, CET = UTC+1 by 1 Nov |
| Rest of world | No change that week | Convert from UTC directly |
Epic's Battle Pass page gives the season end in Eastern Time. Third-party countdown sites can disagree by hours around this cut-over, so the in-game Battle Pass timer is the clock that counts for your account.
How long is Fortnite down for an update?
There's no fixed length. Epic doesn't promise one, and the status page only lists an open-ended "Maintenance". The history is consistent, though. Here are the most recent season-change downtimes. The first four come from the Fortnite Wiki's Server Downtime log, and the last is Beebom's reported figure:
| Date | Transition | Downtime length |
|---|---|---|
| 7 Jun 2025 | End of Galactic Battle → Chapter 6 Season 3 | ~4 hours |
| 1 Nov 2025 | Simpsons mini-season | ~5 hours |
| 29 Nov 2025 | Chapter 6 → Chapter 7 | ~5 hours |
| 5–6 Jun 2026 | Chapter 7 Season 2 → Season 3 | ~6 hours |
| 20 Aug 2026 | Season 3 → Season 4 "Override" (v42.00) | ~5 hours (2 AM → 7 AM ET, per Beebom, not the Wiki) |
The 1 November 2025 row is the closest comparison for this year. It was the same date, it was also a switch into a mini-season, and it took about 5 hours. A whole-new-chapter change runs longer. The Chapter 3 finale in December 2022 kept players out for about 9 hours, and the Chapter 4→5 change in December 2023 ran about 11 hours.
Mid-season patches like v42.30 or v42.40 are smaller and usually finish within a few hours. Hotfixes often need no downtime at all: Epic pushes them live and you just restart the game.
What happens during downtime
- Matchmaking closes a little before the posted time. If you're already in a match, you can usually finish it, but you can't queue for a new one.
- Servers go offline. Launching the game shows a downtime or countdown screen, like the "Starting In" timers pictured on this page.
- The patch becomes downloadable, often before servers come back. Pre-loading during downtime is the single biggest time-saver on launch day.
- Servers reopen, usually in waves. Login queues and "servers not responding" errors are normal for the first 30–60 minutes after a season launch.
Other scheduled maintenance: EOS on 10 November 2026
Not every outage comes with a patch. Epic's status page lists this scheduled Epic Online Services maintenance:
"Epic Online Services is scheduled for maintenance on Tuesday 10 November 2026, 6 am UTC. During the maintenance window, there will be degraded availability for up to 90 minutes for the following services: Sessions, Lobbies."
Epic also warns that existing sessions will time out and clients will be disconnected, and that matchmaking, invites and session search will be temporarily unavailable. That's 1 AM ET / 6 AM UK / 7 AM CET on 10 November. Don't plan a cup or a ranked grind in that window.
Servers are up but Fortnite still won't connect: fix checklist
If status.epicgames.com is green across the board, the problem is most likely on your side. A brand-new incident can take a few minutes to appear on the status page, though, so glance at @FortniteStatus too. Then work through these in order:
- Restart the game fully. Close the client and the Epic Games Launcher, then reopen them. After an update this also forces the client to fetch the latest hotfix.
- Make sure you're on the current version. After downtime the launcher has to finish the patch first. On console, check for a pending update in the system menu.
- Restart your router and PC/console. A power-cycle clears a surprising number of "unable to connect" loops.
- Check your Subregion Preference. Since v42.20 (17 September 2026), Epic has merged NA-West, NA-Central and NA-East into one NA region with selectable subregions for Battle Royale, Zero Build and Ranked. Competitive and tournament matchmaking is unchanged. Epic's own advice: "Choosing Auto is the best option for most players that use this setting." Forcing a far-away subregion can cause long queues. More detail is in our Fortnite lag and high ping fix.
- Verify game files (PC). In the Epic Games Launcher, go to Library, click the three dots on Fortnite, then Manage, then Verify.
- Repair Easy Anti-Cheat (PC) if you get an anti-cheat error at launch. Epic's current method is a shortcut to the EAC setup file with " repair" added to the Target field. The full steps are in our Fortnite not working / crashing / not launching fix.
- Check your platform network. PlayStation Network, Xbox network and Nintendo services all have their own status pages. If they're down, you can't log in to Fortnite on that console.
If none of that works and only you are affected, contact Epic Player Support through its help site. Don't trust "server unlock" tools or downloads promising to skip the queue. They don't exist, and they're a common way to get accounts stolen.
What to do before the 1 November downtime
Season-change downtime is also a hard deadline. Before the servers go down on 1 November:
- Finish the Override Battle Pass levels you still want. Epic says rewards you earned but didn't claim are granted automatically on your next login after the season ends. Rewards you never unlocked are gone, though. Our what to do before Chapter 7 Season 4 ends checklist walks through everything.
- Finish Fortnitemares quests. Fortnitemares 2026 also ends on 1 November.
- Note your Sprite collection. Your Sprite progress and Gizmos are expected to reset with the season, just as Epic reset them at the S3→S4 change. See are Sprites leaving Fortnite?
- Don't stack Safety in Numbers on the final day. That questline runs until 12 November 2026, so it survives the season change.

FAQ
Are Fortnite servers down right now? Check status.epicgames.com. It's Epic's official live dashboard, and each Fortnite service shows Operational, Degraded, Outage or Maintenance. On 22 October 2026 every Fortnite component was Operational. If it's green and you still can't connect, the problem is local.
When is the next Fortnite downtime? The v43.00 update on 1 November 2026, which ends Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override". Epic hasn't posted the start time yet. The last season launch (v42.00) started at 2 AM ET / 6 AM UTC, and mid-season updates have started at 4 AM ET. There's also EOS maintenance on 10 November 2026 from 06:00 to 07:30 UTC.
How long are Fortnite servers down for a new season? Usually about 4–6 hours. The last five season changes on the Fortnite Wiki's downtime log ran 4, 5, 5 and 6 hours, and Override's v42.00 launch took about 5. Full chapter changes with a live event have run longer, sometimes 9–13 hours.
Why can't I log in when the status page says Operational? Usually it's an outdated client, a stuck launcher, a forced far-away subregion, corrupted files, Easy Anti-Cheat, or your console network being down. Restart, update, set Subregion Preference to Auto, and verify your files.
Do I lose Battle Pass progress during downtime? No. Downtime doesn't wipe anything you've earned. Epic also says earned but unclaimed pass rewards are granted automatically on your first login after the season ends. Rewards you haven't unlocked yet can't be earned once v43.00 ends Override, so finish those levels before 1 November.
Is "Fortnite servers down until when" answered anywhere official? Only roughly. Epic posts a start time on @FortniteStatus and announces when servers are back, but it rarely promises an end time. Third-party "back at X o'clock" estimates are based on past downtimes, like the table above.
