There are two leads, and Rockstar has pitched them from the start as a Bonnie-and-Clyde couple. It's a smaller core than GTA V's three-person cast of Michael, Franklin and Trevor, and the story is built around the relationship between the two.
Jason Duval
Rockstar's official bio says Jason "grew up around grifters and crooks", served in the Army, and now works for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys. The October 15 launch trailer fills in more of his past. He wears a U.S. Army "Marauder" Combat Training School shirt, and he says out loud why a straight job isn't an option:
"I got in some trouble in the army, didn't leave on the best of terms. They don't give loans, anything, to people like me."

At the start of the story, Jason works at Brian's Marina. In the launch trailer he's buffing a boat there with Cal (IGN's breakdown of the trailer). Brian also lets him live rent-free in one of his properties, as long as Jason helps with "local shakedowns".
Lucia Caminos
Lucia is the first female lead of the HD-era GTA games. Per Rockstar's bio, she learned to fight from her father, went to prison for "fighting for her family", and is from Liberty City, just like Vice City's Tommy Vercetti. Trailer 2 shows Jason picking her up on her release from the Leonida Department of Corrections. In the launch trailer she still wears an ankle monitor, and she asks Jason, "Are we gonna be okay?" He answers: "We stuck together through everything. We just gotta get through it."
Can you switch between Jason and Lucia? Yes. Character switching is back from GTA V. The Extended Look also showed Jason using a slow-motion Focus state. IGN describes it as slowing time and marking red kill points and yellow disarm points on enemies. Lucia hasn't been shown using it on screen yet. Players on r/GTA6 say both leads have it, but Rockstar hasn't published that, so treat it as reported, not confirmed.

Names 11–17 come from in-game dialogue and on-screen moments in the Extended Look, as catalogued by GTABase and Screen Rant. They are not separate Rockstar bio pages. Spellings follow how the footage presents them.
Who works with Jason in the Keys?
Jason's starting circle is a small-time Keys smuggling crew. Expect most of the early missions to come from these three.
Brian Heder is a drug runner from "the golden age of smuggling in the Keys", and he still moves product through his boat yard. Rockstar's bio sums him up: "Looks like a Leonida beach bum — moves like a great white shark." His best line so far comes from Trailer 2:
"I hauled so much grass in that plane, I could make the state of Leonida levitate."

Lori Heder, Brian's third wife, works the yard alongside him and is shown handling an assault rifle and a pistol. She's more than a background character.
Cal Hampton is Jason's friend. Per Rockstar, he "feels safest hanging at home, snooping on Coast Guard comms with a few beers." In Rockstar's words: "Cal is at the low tide of America and happy there." In the launch trailer he plays with a pet snake. One r/GTA6 thread this week compared him to Raul, framing the cast as a mentor for each lead: Brian is to Jason what Raul is to Lucia.
Who runs the Vice City music scene in GTA 6?
The second cluster is a struggling record label, and it's the most "2020s" part of the cast.
- Boobie Ike is a "local Vice City legend" who turned his street years into real estate, a strip club and a recording studio.
- Dre'Quan Priest "was always more of a hustler than a gangster". He runs Only Raw Records with Boobie and has signed Real Dimez.
- Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe and Roxy) are high-school friends who turned shaking down local dealers into rap tracks and a big social media following. They had an early hit with local rapper DWNPLY, and five years later they need another one.

Who is Méndez in GTA 6?
Méndez is the newest name, and probably the most important one for the story. A Vice City Police Department officer first glimpsed in Trailer 2, he got his name in the Extended Look. He leads a raid on a drug house run by Raymond and Ernesto while Jason and Lucia are there on a pickup. In that raid, a suspect drops his gun and says it isn't loaded. Méndez replies "Too bad" and shoots him anyway. Jason and Lucia clearly know who he is and hide so he doesn't see them. He shows up again in the launch trailer.
Rockstar hasn't called him the main antagonist. Still, a crooked cop who already knows your face fits the new police system. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson has said officers track your clothes, vehicle and whether Jason and Lucia are together, and wanted levels now go up to six stars. Are any GTA Online characters returning in GTA 6?
Yes, one so far. Valentina joined GTA Online in June 2025 with the Money Fronts update, where she was a minor client of Mr. Faber. In GTA 6 she hires Jason and Lucia as private security for Andrés de León at the opening of Megamundo's first U.S. headquarters. She introduces them to COO Petra Navarro before an armed robbery wrecks the party (GTABase). Mr. Faber has not been shown in GTA 6.
That's the only confirmed crossover. "Trevor/Franklin/Lamar cameo" thumbnails are speculation. Rockstar has also not announced any carry-over of GTA Online progress, which we cover in the GTA 6 Online release guide.
Who voices Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn't credited a single actor. Here's what's actually known:
- ✅ Stephen Root publicly confirmed in September 2026 that he's in GTA VI (Eurogamer). Outlets including Collider report his role as Brian Heder. That's the strongest casting link so far, but it still isn't a Rockstar credit.
- ✅ Jim Santangeli, a Red Dead Redemption 2 actor, said in June 2026 that he has a small role. He didn't name the character (Game Rant).
- ⚠️ Dylan Rourke (Jason) and Manni L. Perez (Lucia) are the most common fan picks, based on voice comparisons and past credits. Neither Rockstar nor the actors have confirmed them.
- ⚠️ Bobby Moynihan (Cal) and Manny Perez (Raul) are also widely listed, and also unconfirmed.
Full credits will be in the game itself on November 19. Until then, any "official cast list" is a guess.
How many playable characters does GTA 6 have?
Two. Jason and Lucia are the only playable characters Rockstar has shown, and the cover art features both of them. A 2022 leak listed two more names, Billy and Kai, in a dev menu, which is where the "four protagonists" rumor comes from. Those names come from an unfinished 2022 build.
