Quick answer (TLDR): There is no official GTA 6 Online release date. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S as a single-player game. The official PlayStation listing says it plainly: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience" (PlayStation). The only public timeline came from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, who told Bloomberg on September 17, 2026 that multiplayer launches "next year," meaning 2027. That is not a Rockstar announcement. In the meantime Take-Two has confirmed it "will continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6 release and beyond" (IGN). The next official checkpoint is Take-Two's Q2 earnings call on November 9, 2026.

"When does GTA 6 Online come out?" is one of the biggest GTA questions the official sources still don't answer. Pre-orders have been live since June 25, preload opens November 12, and the launch trailer dropped on October 15. Rockstar still hasn't said a word about a date for the online mode. Below is what's officially confirmed, what the only credible outside source said, what Rockstar's own history suggests, and how to use the gap.
Will GTA 6 have online multiplayer on November 19?
No. This part is confirmed, and it comes from the official store listing, not from a leak.
The FAQ on PlayStation's official GTA VI page asks "Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes or features?" and answers: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." The same line sits on the PlayStation Store product pages for both the Standard Edition ($79.99) and the Ultimate Edition ($99.99) (PlayStation Store). As of October 22, 2026, it hasn't changed.
Two more official signals fit the single-player-only launch:
- Take-Two's September 17 shareholder meeting reaffirmed the November 19 single-player launch. It named no follow-up online mode and gave no date (IGN).
- The ESRB rating (Mature 17+), published in early October, has no "Users Interact" notice. Online-enabled games normally carry that label. This doesn't prove anything on its own, but it matches a launch with no online play. Our GTA 6 age rating breakdown covers the full rating.
So on November 19 you play Jason and Lucia's story in Leonida. There's no shared lobby, no confirmed co-op and no "free roam online" on day one.
When is the GTA 6 Online release date?
There isn't one. Rockstar hasn't announced a date, a window, a name or a feature list for an online mode built on GTA 6. Every date you see is either a projection or a third party's comment.
The only claim from someone with direct contact is Twitch's CEO. In a Bloomberg interview on September 17, 2026, Dan Clancy described how Twitch is preparing for GTA 6:

Clancy isn't a Rockstar employee, and Rockstar hasn't confirmed or responded to his comment. He did, though, describe talks with Rockstar about its plans, which puts him well above a random leaker. The fair reading: 2027 is the best-sourced guess, but it's still only a guess. Treat any page that gives an exact GTA 6 Online date as running ahead of Rockstar.
How long did Rockstar take to launch online last time?
For its last two open-world launches, Rockstar shipped the story first and the online mode later as its own launch. (Older games differed: GTA IV had multiplayer built in on day one in April 2008.) The modern timelines:

If GTA 6 followed the GTA V gap exactly, online would arrive around December 3, 2026. On the RDR2 gap it would be around December 21, 2026. Both are just math on past dates, not predictions Rockstar has made. Clancy's "next year" comment points to something longer than either. That would fit Rockstar's other signals: the store page sells GTA 6 purely as a single-player game, and Take-Two keeps talking up continued support for the current GTA Online.
There's also a precedent for an online mode that changes after launch. Red Dead Online got a standalone release in December 2020, and GTA Online got a standalone PS5/Xbox Series X/S version in March 2022. Rockstar has packaged its online modes in different ways before, which is why the "free or paid?" question can't be answered yet.
Is "GTA Online 2" real?
Not as a name. "GTA Online 2" is fan shorthand for whatever online mode eventually runs on GTA 6's map and engine. Rockstar has never used the term, and Take-Two avoided naming any follow-up at the September shareholder meeting.
What the community expects, and why:
- An online successor is almost certain to exist eventually. GTA Online has been one of the most profitable live games for over a decade, and Clancy says Twitch has been planning creator engagement around a multiplayer launch.
- It probably won't be marketed before November 19. One recent r/GTA6 thread asked why Rockstar hasn't run any GTA 6 promotion inside GTA Online yet. The top replies paraphrased: Rockstar is selling GTA 6 as a single-player game, and online cross-promotion will likely start only once the new mode is announced. Another commenter noted that when Rockstar promoted RDR2 inside GTA Online, it was promoting the story, and Red Dead Online came after.

Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 comes out?
No. Take-Two answered this directly at its September 17, 2026 annual shareholder meeting:

It's still getting new content. The Kortz Center Heist landed on July 14, 2026, and Rockstar keeps rotating weekly events (this week's runs October 22–28). What's the next date that could confirm GTA 6 Online?
Two dates are worth watching:
- November 9, 2026: Take-Two's Q2 fiscal 2027 earnings. Results come after the market close, followed by a conference call at 4:30 p.m. ET (Business Wire). It's the last scheduled investor event before launch, and the most likely place for an analyst to ask about online timing. Take-Two rarely pre-announces Rockstar news on these calls, so don't expect a date.

What should you do while there's no GTA 6 Online?
With no online at launch and no date after it, the smart move is the opposite of waiting. The current GTA Online is where multiplayer GTA happens for the foreseeable future. Take-Two has confirmed it keeps running, and it's the only place to play with your crew this winter.
