Quick answer (TLDR): The Criminal Profile is GTA 6's replacement for an honor meter. It doesn't track whether Jason and Lucia are good people. It tracks what kind of criminal they are. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson confirmed the system by name to IGN. He said it is "different than the honor system in Red Dead Redemption 2", that there "isn't a right or wrong way to play", and that only going "beyond what is necessary on a consistent basis" moves it. Rockstar's sanctioned previews report 4 named states: Professional, Aggressive, Violent and Psycho. Past Psycho, the icon cracks and shatters, and that is reportedly permanent for the playthrough. Jason and Lucia each have their own profile. Exact thresholds and story effects are not confirmed. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Will one bad shootout ruin your GTA 6 playthrough? No. Rockstar has said so directly. With 31 days to launch and preload opening November 12, the Criminal Profile is one of the systems players ask about most, and a lot of what's online mixes Rockstar's own words with guesswork. Below we split everything into three buckets: confirmed by Rockstar, reported from Rockstar's sanctioned previews, and still unknown. Then we cover how to keep a Professional profile once you're playing.
What is the Criminal Profile in GTA 6?
It's a behaviour-tracking system that labels your playstyle as a criminal. IGN's Rob Nelson interview first described it in August as "a spiritual successor to Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system". The game's whole premise is breaking the law, so the profile doesn't reward you for being a model citizen. It reacts to how you commit crimes.
The clearest explanation comes from Nelson himself, Rockstar North's Co-Studio Head and Head of Development. He played roughly 30 minutes of GTA 6 for IGN in July. The full transcript was published on October 7, 2026. When IGN asked about the small icons that pop up after certain actions, he answered:
"The reputation system you are asking about is something we call your Criminal Profile. It's different than the honor system in Red Dead Redemption 2. There isn't a right or wrong way to play this game, but consistent sorts of actions may have an impact in terms of how the world reacts to you and how the narrative plays out." — Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to IGN
He also made clear it's a separate system from Jason and Lucia's relationship. "There is a system that tracks what sort of criminal you are. And then there is also a relationship system. They're separate." Killing a store clerk doesn't directly hurt the romance, and a kayak date doesn't clean up your record.
What are the GTA 6 Criminal Profile levels?
Previews report four named states, from cleanest to most extreme: Professional, Aggressive, Violent and Psycho. This list comes from Rockstar's sanctioned preview at Rockstar North, where YouTuber TGG watched developers play. Vice, PC Gamer and Game Rant all reported it. Rockstar hasn't published the list itself, so treat the names as reported, very likely accurate, not official.
| State | What it reportedly reflects | Typical behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| Professional | Controlled, disciplined crime | Rob the store, nobody needlessly hurt, leave |
| Aggressive | Escalating more than needed | Shooting or beating people who weren't a threat |
| Violent | Repeated excessive force | Regular unnecessary killing during jobs and free roam |
| Psycho | Extreme, consistent chaos | Treating every encounter as a massacre |
| Shattered (beyond Psycho) | Profile icon cracks, then breaks | Reportedly locked for the rest of that playthrough |
Two details matter more than the names:
- These are named states, not a sliding bar. RDR2 showed a meter. GTA 6 reportedly gives you a label, and Vice describes the profile as "divided into named states rather than being represented by a constantly moving bar."
- It's about patterns, not single acts. Nelson's wording is "on a consistent basis". One panicked shot during a robbery gone wrong isn't the same as gunning down every cashier in Vice City.
In Rockstar's 26-minute Extended Look (August 27), a small icon shows up in the top-right corner of the HUD, next to the wanted stars, during robberies and chases. Outlets that went through the footage frame by frame read the purple devil face as a darker profile state. Rockstar hasn't labelled which icon matches which state, so icon-to-state mapping is community interpretation, not confirmed.
What is the "Shattered" Criminal Profile, and is it permanent?
Reportedly yes. Past Psycho, the profile icon cracks and then shatters, and you can't recover it in that playthrough. That comes from the same preview reporting, and Game Rant puts it this way: "Reaching it is reportedly irreversible for the remainder of a playthrough, meaning players cannot simply change their behavior later and return the character to a previous state."
This fixes a well-known RDR2 problem. In Red Dead you could spend 40 hours robbing trains, then help enough strangers to bring Arthur's honor back up. GTA 6 reportedly keeps that kind of recovery for the normal states only. Push far enough and the label sticks.
What we don't know:
- How much it takes to crack the icon, or to go from cracked to shattered.
- Whether a shattered profile changes missions, cutscenes or the ending, or only how the world reacts.
- Whether a new game or a story checkpoint resets it.
Wait for launch-week testing on those before you believe any confident answer.
Do Jason and Lucia have separate Criminal Profiles?
Yes, by every preview account. Each protagonist has their own profile. Vice reports that "players can make one character a careful professional and the other a violent criminal." So you could run Lucia as a clean, methodical thief and let Jason be the loose cannon, or the other way round.
This fits how the story is built. Nelson says the narrative "require[s] them to stay together for most of the story." Having two independent criminal records gives the two-protagonist setup real role-play value without forcing the couple apart. How the two profiles interact in shared missions hasn't been explained.
What changes your Criminal Profile, and what doesn't?
Doing your job doesn't count against you. Doing more than the job needs, again and again, does. This part has the strongest sourcing because it comes straight from Rockstar:
"So if you're doing things on a mission that you are required to do – or you're robbing places, or somebody comes and messes with you and you have to deal with them by smacking them down or whatever – that's all fair game. It's when you go beyond what is necessary on a consistent basis or you do completely unnecessary stuff consistently that you may start to sway your criminal profile in a certain direction." — Rob Nelson, IGN
In practice, based on that quote:
| Action | Effect on profile (per Rockstar's description) |
|---|---|
| Killing a target a mission requires | ✅ Fair game, no penalty |
| Robbing a store or bank | ✅ Fair game, it's the core loop |
| Fighting back when an NPC attacks you | ✅ Fair game |
| Executing a clerk who already handed over the cash | ⚠️ Pushes toward darker states if repeated |
| Random killing sprees in free roam | ⚠️ "Completely unnecessary stuff consistently" |
| One bad moment in a chaotic shootout | Unlikely to matter much on its own |
Nelson also described how he wants the world to feel. "If you hit and run, commit a crime and run, get into trouble and move on before the cops get there, and you don't start shooting people, don't start escalating – which you absolutely can do if you want to – but if you don't, you're generally going to be fine." That's the design goal: escalation is always your choice.
Small everyday actions also seem to register. In the Extended Look, Jason pets a dog (the prompts read Pet / Scold / Study) and a small icon appears in the corner. Some outlets say gestures like this improve your profile. Rockstar hasn't explained what that icon does to the profile, so we're filing that as unconfirmed.
Will a Psycho profile lock you out of missions?
Rockstar hasn't said, and the evidence so far points to "no". This is the question r/GTA6 is arguing about this week. A widely discussed thread asks whether Raul Bautista, the experienced bank robber from Rockstar's character line-up who stresses professionalism in a scene from the official footage, will refuse to work with a Psycho Jason or Lucia. The most-upvoted replies predict different reactions, not lockouts: a smaller cut or a scolding from Raul instead of a locked mission, and dialogue that shifts the way low-honor Arthur's did in RDR2.
Rockstar's own words support that reading. Nelson says the profile "may have an impact in terms of how the world reacts to you and how the narrative plays out," and repeats that "there is no right or wrong way to play this." Locking main story missions behind playstyle would contradict that. Side content reacting to your reputation, with some NPCs being warier of a known psycho, would fit it. Expect flavour and consequences, not hard gates. That's our read, not Rockstar's statement.
Vice's preview recap also reports that Criminal Profile notifications can be turned off. So if you want classic GTA chaos without the HUD reminding you, you reportedly can opt out of the pop-ups.
How do you keep a Professional Criminal Profile in GTA 6?
Use the systems Rockstar built for clean crimes. Each tip below is based on mechanics shown in the official previews:
- Aim to incapacitate, not kill. Previews report that GTA 6's Focus ability marks yellow weak points that drop an enemy without killing them, and red ones that are lethal. A yellow hit marker means "incapacitated", red means a kill.
- Only shoot people who are shooting at you. Self-defense is "fair game", per Nelson. Clerks who comply aren't.
- Leave before it escalates. Previews describe crimes needing a witness or alarm before police respond. Get out fast and there's less chance of a firefight you didn't need.
- Lose heat instead of fighting it. Changing clothes, switching vehicles or splitting Jason and Lucia up reportedly cuts your Heat. Each of those is a fight you skip.
- Pick your partner's role. Separate profiles mean you can keep one protagonist clean for the professionals in the story and let the other handle the dirty work.
For the police side of this, see our GTA 6 wanted level and Heat guide. The robbery loop the profile sits on top of is covered in every GTA 6 robbery type Rockstar confirmed.
How is GTA 6's Criminal Profile different from RDR2's Honor system?
| RDR2 Honor | GTA 6 Criminal Profile | |
|---|---|---|
| Tracks | Good vs. bad person | What kind of criminal you are |
| Display | Sliding meter | Named states (reported) |
| Crime itself | Lowers honor | Fair game, only excess counts |
| Characters | Arthur (and later John) | Jason and Lucia tracked separately (reported) |
| Recovery | Always reversible | Reversible until Shattered (reported) |
| Effect | Dialogue, discounts, ending | World reaction + narrative (confirmed, specifics unknown) |
Nelson spent part of the IGN interview on RDR2's honor endings, including how low-honor players reacted to Arthur's harsher death. He then said, "we are definitely continuing down this path with GTA 6." That's the best hint that your profile will show up in the story somewhere. Rockstar hasn't said where.
