Quick answer: No. GTA 6 is not on Xbox Game Pass (or PlayStation Plus) at launch: as of October 29, 2026, neither Rockstar, Microsoft nor Sony has announced any subscription inclusion. The Xbox Store listing sells it at $79.99 (Standard) and $99.99 (Ultimate) for November 19, 2026. You also don't need Game Pass or PS Plus to play it, because the store page calls it "a single-player experience." Rockstar's own history says not to wait: its last big game, Red Dead Redemption 2, took about 18 months to reach Game Pass.

That's the short version. Below is what's confirmed, what Take-Two's CEO has actually said about subscriptions, how long Rockstar's last two games took to reach Game Pass, and the cheapest legit way to play on day one.

Is GTA 6 on Xbox Game Pass at launch?

No, and nothing official suggests it will be. Here's what the official sources show today, October 29, 2026:

  • The Xbox Store lists Grand Theft Auto VI as a normal paid game at $79.99 / $99.99, release date 11/19/2026. There's no "Included with Game Pass" badge.
  • Rockstar Support's official platforms and editions page lists two ways to get the game: Standard and Ultimate, digital or physical. It doesn't mention a subscription anywhere.
  • Microsoft hasn't put GTA 6 on any Game Pass "coming soon" list on Xbox Wire.

So if you were planning to skip the $79.99 and play through your subscription on November 19, plan again. The only way in on day one is to buy it. (Full edition and store breakdown: where to pre-order GTA 6.)

Why isn't GTA 6 on Game Pass?

Because Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, has said for years that day-one subscription releases don't make sense for its big games. CEO Strauss Zelnick said so directly at GI Live: Online in 2022, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz:

"Our scepticism has been around making frontline console products available day and date with subscription. That doesn't make any sense to us, because economically speaking, we don't think consumers are prepared to pay for that." — Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO

In the same talk he left the door open for older games: subscriptions "can potentially be great for catalogue properties... that have been in the market for a while and their price has been reduced." That's the pattern Rockstar has followed ever since. New games are sold at full price, and older ones go into subscriptions for a few months at a time.

Microsoft's own rules are moving the same way. On April 21, 2026, Xbox Wire announced that Game Pass Ultimate would drop from $29.99 to $22.99 a month, and that "future Call of Duty titles won't join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch." New Call of Duty games now arrive "about a year later." If Microsoft won't put its own biggest shooter on Game Pass day one, a third-party game expected to be the biggest launch of the decade wasn't going to be there either.

When could GTA 6 come to Game Pass?

Nobody has announced a date. Anyone giving you one is guessing. What we can do is look at how long Rockstar's last two big releases took to reach Game Pass:

Chart showing Red Dead Redemption 2 reached Xbox Game Pass 18 months after launch and GTA 5 took 76 months, while GTA 6 has no Game Pass date

GameLaunchFirst Game Pass dayGapHow long it stayed
Red Dead Redemption 2Oct 26, 2018May 7, 2020~18 months~4 months (left Sept 7, 2020)
Grand Theft Auto VSept 17, 2013Jan 3, 2020~76 months (6.3 years)Left May 7, 2020, when RDR2 replaced it
Grand Theft Auto VINov 19, 2026Not announced——

Sources: Xbox Wire (GTA V joins, Jan 3, 2020); Xbox Wire, April 23, 2020 (RDR2 joins May 7 as GTA V leaves); RockstarINTEL, August 2020 (RDR2 leaves Sept 7, 2020).

Three takeaways:

  • The fastest precedent is about 18 months. If GTA 6 matched RDR2 exactly, that would be around May 2028. That's an illustration, not a prediction. Two past releases can't set a minimum, and the deal Rockstar strikes for GTA 6 could be different.
  • The GTA 5 gap is partly an accident of timing. Game Pass itself only launched on June 1, 2017 (Xbox Wire), almost four years after GTA 5 came out. So the 6-year figure overstates how long Rockstar "held out."
  • Stays are short. GTA V has cycled on and off Game Pass in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025, usually for a few months at a time. Its latest stint ended on April 15, 2026, according to games.gg. Even if GTA 6 does arrive, expect a window, not a permanent spot.
  • Your progress survives, your access doesn't. When GTA V left Game Pass on May 7, 2020, subscribers kept their saves but had to buy the game to keep playing (TheSixthAxis, April 2020).

Bottom line: if you want GTA 6 in 2026 or 2027, waiting for Game Pass isn't a plan. Buy it, or wait for a sale.

Is GTA 6 on PS Plus?

No. Sony hasn't announced GTA 6 for PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium, and the PlayStation Store sells it at the same $79.99 / $99.99. PlayStation's precedent is the same as Xbox's: GTA V has rotated through PS Plus Extra several times since late 2023 (games.gg lists late 2023, November 2024 and November 2025). That's years after launch, not on day one.

If you're deciding which console to buy GTA 6 on, subscriptions shouldn't be part of the decision. Neither one gets it in its catalog. Our PS5 vs Xbox for GTA 6 breakdown covers the parts that do matter, and GTA 6 on Xbox Series S covers the budget Xbox.

Do you need Game Pass or PS Plus to play GTA 6?

No, not at launch. This is the question that actually saves you money. On consoles, the subscription is only required for online multiplayer. Xbox's Game Pass page lists "Online console multiplayer" in every tier (Essential, Premium and Ultimate). Offline single-player games don't need it.

And GTA 6 is single-player at launch. The Xbox Store listing says, word for word:

"Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." — Xbox Store, Grand Theft Auto VI listing

Rockstar hasn't announced or dated a GTA 6 online mode. Reporting points to 2027, but that's not confirmed (we broke it down in GTA 6 Online release date). So on November 19 you can cancel or skip Game Pass Essential / PS Plus Essential and still play the full story.

One caveat about "offline." The same store page includes Rockstar's standard licence line: "Certain game features, content, services, or functions may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration (minimum age varies), single-use serial code, additional fees, or unlocking with gameplay." In practice you'll need internet to download it (the November 12 preload), to redeem the physical box's download code (there's no disc), and probably for a day-one patch. Rockstar hasn't said whether story mode needs a permanent connection after that, so treat any "always online" claim as unconfirmed.

Can you play GTA 6 on Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Not confirmed. Cloud play needs either the game in the Game Pass catalog, which it isn't, or Microsoft adding GTA 6 to its list of eligible games you own. Microsoft hasn't listed it. Also, Xbox Wire announced that beginning in November 2026, Game Pass plans include a set number of cloud hours each month: 5 on Essential, 10 on Premium and 15 on Ultimate, with extra hours available to buy in the Xbox Store. That's not much for a game that a Rockstar developer reportedly played for 80 hours (how long GTA 6 is). GTA 6 also isn't on PC yet (PC release status), so there's no PC Game Pass route either.

What's the cheapest way to play GTA 6 on day one?

Since a subscription won't get you in, here's how the real costs compare:

OptionUpfront costWhat you getNotes
Standard Edition (digital)$79.99Game + Vintage Vice City Pack + 1 month of GTA+Pre-order before Nov 20, 2026 for the bonuses; preload Nov 12
Standard Edition (physical box)$79.99Download code + Vintage Vice City PackNo disc in the box; no GTA+ month (Rockstar Support)
Ultimate Edition (digital only)$99.99Game + Ultimate Edition UpgradeNo boxed Ultimate exists
Wait for Game Pass$0 nowNothing on Nov 19No date; fastest Rockstar precedent ~18 months

Two money tips:

  • Buy Standard, upgrade later if you want to. Rockstar Support confirms the Ultimate Edition Upgrade can be bought separately "at any point" after the Standard Edition is redeemed. You're not locked out of it. (More in Ultimate vs Standard.)
  • Pre-order bonuses are the real "free" part. Digital pre-orders and purchases before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+, according to Rockstar Support. Full list: GTA 6 pre-order bonuses. Changed your mind? Read the cancellation deadlines before the preload starts.

Outside the US, prices differ (for example £69.99 / €79.99). See GTA 6 price in the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia.

What should you do while you wait for November 19?

Your Game Pass or PS Plus subscription is still useful for one thing right now: GTA Online. The sub covers online multiplayer access, but you still need to own GTA 5 to play GTA Online once it's out of the catalog. It's the only online GTA there is until Rockstar announces GTA 6's multiplayer. That GTA+ month from your pre-order is Rockstar's GTA Online membership too. Its perks, like the monthly GTA$ deposit, pay out in GTA Online, not in GTA 6's story.

So if you're playing GTA Online for the next three weeks, skip the grind and set up your account now:

FAQ

Is GTA 6 on Game Pass day one? No. GTA 6 isn't part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, Essential or PC Game Pass on November 19, 2026. The Xbox Store sells it at $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate, and neither Microsoft nor Rockstar has announced a Game Pass release.

Will GTA 6 ever come to Game Pass? Possibly, but nothing has been announced. Rockstar's history suggests it won't be soon: Red Dead Redemption 2 reached Game Pass about 18 months after launch and GTA 5 about 6 years after (Game Pass itself only started in 2017). Both stayed for a few months at a time. That's history, not a guaranteed timeline.

Do I need Game Pass Ultimate or PS Plus to play GTA 6? No. Consoles only require a subscription for online multiplayer, and the Xbox Store describes GTA 6 as "a single-player experience" at launch. You will need internet to download it, redeem codes and install patches.

Is GTA 6 on PS Plus Extra? No. Sony hasn't announced GTA 6 for any PlayStation Plus tier. GTA 5 only joined PS Plus Extra years after its release, for limited stints.

Can I stream GTA 6 with Xbox Cloud Gaming? Not confirmed. It isn't in the Game Pass catalog, and Microsoft hasn't listed it as an eligible owned game for cloud play. From November 2026, Game Pass includes 5, 10 or 15 cloud hours a month depending on tier, and extra hours can be bought.

Is GTA 6 on PC Game Pass? No. GTA 6 has no announced PC version yet. It launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
