The Helminth is the single most powerful progression system in Warframe: once it is unlocked, you can tear an ability off any Warframe you own and bolt it onto a completely different frame. It is how veterans turn a mediocre build into an S-tier one, and it is why "which ability should I subsume?" is one of the most-asked questions in the game. But the system is gated behind a specific quest, a specific vendor, and a Mastery Rank wall that stops most new players cold. This guide walks the exact unlock path, both ways to get the Helminth Segment, how subsuming actually works, and the resource economy that powers all of it — verified against the official Warframe Wiki and Digital Extremes' own quest pages as of Update 44 (Iceblade of Narin, October 2026).
Quick answer: To get the Helminth, you need the Helminth Segment. Get it one of two ways: buy the blueprint from Son in the Necralisk on Deimos for 15,000 Entrati Standing (requires Mastery Rank 8 and Rank 3 – Associate with the Entrati), then build it in your Foundry — or buy a pre-built Segment from the in-game Market as part of the Helminth Segments Bundle for 300 Platinum. Install it in the Helminth Infirmary on your Orbiter, and you can start feeding resources, subsuming Warframes, and infusing abilities. Reaching the Entrati vendor first requires completing the Heart of Deimos quest, which unlocks after you clear the Earth-to-Mars Junction.
What is the Helminth in Warframe?
The Helminth is an Infested creature living in a sealed room on your Orbiter called the Helminth Infirmary. Lore-wise it is an Orokin bio-weapon experiment — the thing that created the first Warframes — and it still performs the "biological functions" of your ship. Mechanically, it does three jobs for you:
- Subsume a Warframe you own to permanently learn one of its abilities.
- Infuse that subsumed ability onto any other Warframe, replacing one of that frame's existing powers.
- Invigorate a frame with random temporary buffs (a later, optional upgrade).
The Infirmary itself sits on the right side of your Orbiter (left as you come down from Navigation) behind an infested door. You can actually peek into the room early — if you carry a Helminth Cyst (caught from another infected player, or by owning Nidus/Nidus Prime) the door opens before you own the Segment. But you cannot subsume or infuse anything until the Helminth Segment is installed. That Segment is the real unlock, and getting it is what this guide is about.
How do you unlock the Helminth Segment?
There are exactly two legitimate paths, and both end with a built Helminth Segment installed on your Orbiter.
Path 1 — Earn it with Entrati Standing (free, the main route)
The Helminth Segment blueprint is sold by Son, one of the Entrati family NPCs in the Necralisk on Deimos. The hard requirements, per the official wiki, are:
- Mastery Rank 8 on your account.
- Rank 3 – Associate standing with the Entrati syndicate.
- 15,000 Entrati Standing to buy the blueprint.
Once purchased, you craft the Segment in your Foundry, then install it in the Helminth Infirmary. Entrati Standing is earned on Deimos by turning in tokens (fish, conservation tags, gems, mother tokens from bounties) to the family members, so you will naturally accumulate it while doing Deimos content.
Path 2 — Buy it with Platinum (the shortcut)
If you would rather skip the Standing grind, a pre-built Helminth Segment can be bought directly from the in-game Market as part of the Helminth Segments Bundle for 300 Platinum. That bundle includes both the base Segment and the Invigoration Segment (covered below), so it is the single-purchase "turn the whole system on" option. This is Platinum traded or bought through legitimate in-game channels only — more on where Platinum comes from at the end of this guide.
What quest unlocks Deimos and the Necralisk?
You cannot reach Son until you can reach the Necralisk, and that is gated behind the Heart of Deimos quest. The chain looks like this:
| Step | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unlock the quest | Complete the Earth-to-Mars Junction on the Star Chart | The quest then appears in your Codex |
| Enter the Necralisk | During Heart of Deimos, destroy two Infested Hives to "prove yourself" to Loid | This opens the Necralisk hub and the Entrati family |
| Start earning Standing | Finish Heart of Deimos, pledge to the Entrati | Rank up toward Associate (Rank 3) for the Segment |
| Reach MR 8 | Account-wide Mastery Rank | A hard gate on the blueprint purchase |
Heart of Deimos is an early-to-mid quest, so most players hit the Mastery Rank 8 requirement later than the quest itself — MR 8 is usually the real bottleneck, not the Standing.
How does subsuming a Warframe work?
Once the Segment is installed, sit in the Helminth chair and you unlock Rank 1 – Metamorphosis, the subsume function. Here is the mechanic, exactly:
- You sacrifice a built, non-Prime, non-Umbra Warframe of any level. It is permanently consumed and its slot is freed.
- 23 hours later, the Helminth grants that frame's one predetermined subsumed ability — not whichever ability you want, a fixed one per frame.
- That ability is then available to infuse onto any other Warframe, replacing one of its four powers.
For example, sacrificing a single Mag permanently unlocks her subsumed Pull for use on any other frame. Passives cannot be subsumed — only one specific active ability per frame. Because the frame is destroyed, most players subsume a cheap, easily re-farmed frame (or a spare they built purely to feed the Helminth) rather than a frame they actually play.
"Your Warframe will be consumed in the process." — Warframe in-game Helminth description
A critical planning note: check the subsumable-ability list before you sacrifice anything. The ability the Helminth extracts is fixed by Digital Extremes, so if you want a frame's other power, subsuming it will not give you that — you'll have wasted the frame.
What are Secretions and why does the Helminth get "bored"?
Every Helminth action — subsuming, infusing, ranking up — costs Secretions, and Secretions come from feeding the Helminth resources. Almost every resource in the game can be fed, and each one converts into one of seven Secretion categories:
- Bile · Biotics · Calx · Oxides · Pheromones · Synthetics — the six main categories, each fed by a different pool of resources (for example, Argon Crystals, Cryotic and Morphics feed Bile).
- Sentient Appetite — a special category used to reset the Helminth's cravings.
The catch is the appetite system: each time you feed a resource type, the Helminth grows disinterested in it and returns fewer Secretions next time, pushing you to vary your diet. If a resource becomes disliked, feeding a Sentient resource (via Sentient Appetite, unlocked at Metamorphosis Rank 8) restores 50% of that resource's appetite gauge. This is deliberate — it stops you from dumping one infinite resource and forces you to spread the cost across your inventory.
Ranking up the Helminth's Metamorphosis level (by feeding, subsuming and infusing) unlocks extra capacity and a set of unique Helminth-only abilities you can also infuse — among them Empower (strength buff), Rebuild Shields, Marked for Death and Golden Instinct (a loot-finder). Only one subsumed or Helminth ability can occupy an ability slot at a time.
What is the Helminth Invigoration Segment?
Invigoration is the second-tier upgrade. The Helminth Invigoration Segment lets you give a chosen Warframe a pair of randomly selected temporary buffs that last a week. Its requirements are a step above the base Segment:
- Blueprint from Son for 30,000 Entrati Standing.
- Mastery Rank 8 and Rank 5 – Family with the Entrati.
- Or, included in the same Helminth Segments Bundle (300 Platinum) as the base Segment.
You do not need Invigoration to use the core subsume-and-infuse loop, so treat it as an endgame convenience rather than a priority unlock.
Is buying the Helminth Segment with Platinum worth it?
For most players chasing the system fast, the 300-Platinum bundle is a reasonable time-save: it skips both the base-Segment Standing grind and the 30,000-Standing Invigoration grind in one purchase. But two honest caveats:
- The Mastery Rank 8 and quest gates still apply in spirit — you still need Heart of Deimos done and a reasonable account to make the Helminth useful, because you need frames to subsume and resources to feed it.
- Platinum should come from legitimate in-game sources only. Earn it by trading Prime parts, Rivens and spare mods player-to-player through the in-game Trading Post (Mastery Rank 2 and 2FA required), or buy it from Digital Extremes directly. Warframe's EULA explicitly prohibits third-party "secondary markets" for in-game currency, and DE's own support team publicly warns that discount-Platinum sellers are "not legitimate." Stick to trading and the official store.
If you have the Platinum spare and want the whole system switched on today, the bundle is fine. If you are a newer player, earning the Segment through Entrati Standing while you grind toward Mastery Rank 8 is the natural, free path — and you'll have plenty of spare frames to subsume by the time you get there.
FAQ
What Mastery Rank do you need for the Helminth? You need Mastery Rank 8 to buy the Helminth Segment blueprint from Son, alongside Rank 3 – Associate standing with the Entrati. The Platinum bundle has no MR gate on the purchase itself, but the system is only useful once you have frames to subsume.
Can you get the Helminth for free? Yes. The full subsume-and-infuse system is free if you earn the Helminth Segment with 15,000 Entrati Standing from Son on Deimos. The only paid shortcut is the 300-Platinum Helminth Segments Bundle, which simply skips the Standing grind.
Which Warframe should you subsume first? Subsume a cheap, easily re-farmed frame rather than one you play — the frame is permanently destroyed. Popular first subsumes for their abilities (not the frames themselves) include Nourish (from Grendel), Gloom (from Sevagoth), Roar (from Rhino) and Pull (from Mag), but always check the fixed subsumable ability on the wiki before you sacrifice anything.
Do you lose the Warframe when you subsume it? Yes — subsuming permanently consumes the built Warframe and frees its slot. You keep only its single predetermined subsumed ability. Prime and Umbra frames cannot be subsumed at all.
Why does the Helminth want different resources every time? The appetite system makes the Helminth lose interest in any resource you feed repeatedly, returning fewer Secretions. Spread your feeding across resource types, and use a Sentient resource (via Sentient Appetite at Metamorphosis Rank 8) to restore 50% of a disliked resource's appetite.
Do you need the Invigoration Segment? No. Invigoration is an optional endgame upgrade for temporary weekly buffs. The core subsume-and-infuse loop only needs the base Helminth Segment.
