Everyone who jumped into the Modern Warfare 4 beta got a taste of the new modes — but two of the launch lineup's fresh modes were never in it. Arms Deal and Frontline were revealed at Call of Duty: NEXT and confirmed to join the full game, and neither shipped in the Aug 21–Sep 1 beta. So if you're planning your first week on Modern Warfare 4 — which launches October 23, 2026 — these are the two modes you'll be learning from scratch on day one.

Here's exactly how both work, straight from Activision, plus where they slot into MW4's full mode list.

Quick answer: What are MW4's new Arms Deal and Frontline modes?

Arms Deal is a 5v5, single-life mode built on Search and Destroy — you earn in-match cash from kills and objective play, spend it on weapons and equipment each round, and lose your entire loadout if you die. Frontline is a 6v6 respawn mode where both teams always deploy from their own base and score by eliminating enemies, with bonus points for kills taken outside the enemy's base. Both were shown at Call of Duty: NEXT and are confirmed for the launch lineup — but neither appeared in the open beta, so day one is your first hands-on with them.

Why weren't Arms Deal and Frontline in the MW4 beta?

The MW4 beta was a slice, not the full game. Over its two weekends (Weekend 1 Aug 21–25, Open Beta Aug 28–Sep 1), it ran a rotating set of Core 6v6 maps and modes including Hijack and Inflation — the two headline new modes we broke down in our MW4 Inflation & Hijack guide — plus Kill Block Gunfight and Combat Outpost Ground War. Activision also confirmed Search and Destroy for the beta.

Arms Deal and Frontline were held back. Per Activision's Call of Duty: NEXT recap, "NEXT showcased the new Inflation mode, with Hijack, Arms Deal, and Frontline also joining the launch lineup." In other words: Inflation and Hijack you could play; Arms Deal and Frontline you'll meet for the first time at launch. That makes them two of the more important modes to understand before you drop in — there's no beta muscle memory to lean on.

How does Arms Deal work in Modern Warfare 4?

Arms Deal is a 5v5, round-based, single-life mode based on Search and Destroy — but with an economy layer bolted on top. Instead of running a fixed loadout every round, you build your arsenal with cash you earn during the match.

Here's the loop, per the official gameplay-systems breakdown:

  • Earn cash in-match through kills and objective play.
  • Spend it each round on a limited selection of weapons and equipment.
  • It's single-life and high-stakes — get eliminated and you lose your entire loadout.

If that structure sounds familiar, it should: it's Call of Duty's take on the buy-round economy that defines tactical shooters like Counter-Strike and Valorant. The tension is in the money management — do you full-buy this round and risk going broke, or play a cheap "eco" round to bank cash for the next one? A single death doesn't just cost you the round, it wipes the gear you paid for.

For a 5v5, single-life format, that means every engagement carries S&D-level stakes. Expect Arms Deal to reward the same disciplined, slow-clearing playstyle that top Search and Destroy players use — plus economy awareness most casual CoD players have never had to think about.

Arms Deal at a glance: 5v5 · single-life · Search and Destroy base · in-match economy · buy weapons + equipment each round · lose your loadout on death.

How does Frontline work in Modern Warfare 4?

Frontline is the opposite energy: a 6v6, respawn-based team mode built around a fixed spawn structure. Per Activision, "players always deploy from their team's base. Eliminate enemies to score, earning more points for taking them down outside their base, encouraging teams to push forward while defending their own."

The key mechanic is the positional scoring multiplier:

  • Both teams always spawn at their own base — no flipping spawns, no chaotic spawn traps.
  • Every elimination scores, but kills you get outside the enemy's base are worth more.
  • That pushes both teams to advance into the middle and contest ground rather than turtle at home.

Functionally, Frontline is a fast, high-respawn team deathmatch with a tug-of-war built into the scoreboard. Because spawns are locked to each base, the map develops a real "front line" in the middle — hence the name — and the reward structure nudges you to keep pressing forward instead of camping your own spawn. It's the mode to warm up in, chase XP, and grind challenges without the single-life pressure of Arms Deal.

What is MW4's full launch mode lineup?

Arms Deal and Frontline join a stacked launch slate. Here's what Activision has confirmed as of Call of Duty: NEXT:

Which new mode should you play first at launch?

Because neither Arms Deal nor Frontline was in the beta, your day-one instinct matters — you're building muscle memory from zero either way. The split is clean:

  • Play Frontline first if you want to warm up and rack up progress. Respawns mean you learn map flow, sightlines, and gun feel without a single death ending your round. With 12 Core 6v6 maps rotating at launch, Frontline is the fastest way to see them all and figure out where the strong angles live before you commit to a single-life mode.
  • Play Arms Deal first if you came from Search and Destroy or a tactical shooter. The single-life, buy-round structure rewards patience and information over raw reflexes, so if you already think in terms of eco rounds and utility, it's the mode where your existing instincts transfer. Just budget your cash — a reckless full-buy on a lost round can leave you rifle-less on the next.

For most players, the smart launch-week loop is Frontline to warm up, then Arms Deal once your aim and map knowledge are dialed in. It mirrors how competitive players ladder into single-life formats: get reps in a forgiving mode first, then step up to the one where every death costs you. If you'd rather skip the warm-up grind entirely, that's what private MW4 bot lobbies are for — controlled reps against easy targets before you queue into a live Arms Deal lobby.

Do the new modes change how you earn XP and camos?

Yes — and this is where mode choice becomes a grind strategy. MW4 uses Smartstreaks, where "Killstreaks now reward both kills and objective play," so objective-heavy modes like Frontline actively feed your streak progress, not just your K/D. And the Weapon Camo journey spans Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone, with three Mastery Camos in each mode for nine total — meaning the mode you grind in matters for which camo track you're advancing.

Practically: Frontline is your XP-and-challenge farm (respawns, objective points, forward pressure), while Arms Deal is your high-skill, low-volume mode (single-life, fewer engagements, but real pressure to improve). If you're chasing a fast rank-up at launch, respawn modes like Frontline plus Double XP windows will move the needle far quicker than single-life Arms Deal.

If you'd rather skip the grind entirely — or warm up your aim before dropping into single-life Arms Deal against a full lobby — that's exactly what our MW4 services are for.

When can you play Arms Deal and Frontline?

Both modes go live with the full game. Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23, 2026 (Activision), with campaign early access on October 16 for players who pre-order digitally. Multiplayer — including Arms Deal and Frontline — unlocks at the October 23 global launch. There's no confirmed date for either mode to appear before then, since neither was part of the beta.

FAQ

Is Arms Deal the same as Search and Destroy in MW4? No — Arms Deal is based on Search and Destroy but adds an in-match economy. It's 5v5 and single-life like S&D, but you earn cash from kills and objective play and spend it on a limited selection of weapons and equipment each round. Standard Search and Destroy is a separate, confirmed mode that runs your own loadout.

Was Frontline in the Modern Warfare 4 beta? No. Frontline was revealed at Call of Duty: NEXT and confirmed to join the launch lineup, but it did not appear in either beta weekend (Aug 21–25 or the Aug 28–Sep 1 open beta). Launch day is the first time anyone plays it.

How many players are in Arms Deal and Frontline? Arms Deal is 5v5; Frontline is 6v6. Arms Deal's smaller, single-life format is built for tactical, high-stakes rounds, while Frontline's 6v6 respawn format is faster and more forgiving.

Which new MW4 mode is best for leveling up fast? Frontline. Because it's respawn-based and rewards objective play through Smartstreaks, it generates far more XP and challenge progress per match than the single-life Arms Deal. Pair it with Double XP tokens for the fastest rank-up.

When do Arms Deal and Frontline release? At the MW4 global launch on October 23, 2026. Neither was in the beta, so there's no earlier access to either mode. Campaign early access begins October 16 for digital pre-orders, but that's the campaign — not multiplayer.

Do the new modes count toward Mastery Camo progress? Yes — Multiplayer modes feed your Multiplayer Camo Track, which is one of three tracks (Multiplayer, DMZ, Warzone) that each award three Mastery Camos, for nine total. Grinding Frontline or Arms Deal advances the Multiplayer track.
