TL;DR: why are my MW4 loadouts not saving?
It's a real, acknowledged bug, not your console or your PC. Activision's support page lists "I can't save Loadouts in Multiplayer" as a known issue on all platforms, under investigation, with no official workaround yet. Two related problems have their own fixes: (1) if you entered Classic Prestige from the DMZ menus, you can't make new Multiplayer classes until you delete the old classes that contain relocked items (Infinity Ward's official workaround, fix in test); (2) loadouts that vanish after you Prestige are partly by design, because Classic Prestige resets Create-a-Class progress, and the October 25 update now clears those loadouts properly. Under Player Level 4 you can't save a custom class at all. Create-a-Class opens at Level 4.
Key numbers from the official pages:
- 4: the Player Level where Create-a-Class unlocks. Before that, you only get premade Default Loadouts.
- 4 open issues on Activision's MW4 Known Issues page right now. Loadout saving is the first one listed, and it hits all platforms.
- 5 Multiplayer loadout fixes shipped across the October 24 and October 25 updates (listed below).
- 20%: the XP boost Classic Prestige gives you in exchange for resetting your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress.
Is the MW4 loadout saving bug official?
Yes. As of October 26, Activision's own support page lists it at the top of the MW4 known issues. Quoting it directly:
"An issue preventing some players from saving Loadouts in Multiplayer is under investigation." (Activision Support, Known Issues in Modern Warfare 4)
Three things matter in that line. It's Multiplayer (DMZ has separate loadout issues, covered below). It says some players, so it isn't universal. And there is no workaround posted for it, unlike the DMZ Operator Prestige issue on the same page. If anyone tells you a specific setting "fixes" it, treat that as a guess, not an official fix.
Here's every loadout-related item Infinity Ward and Activision have published since launch:
| Issue | Official status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Can't save Loadouts in Multiplayer (all platforms) | Under investigation, no workaround | Update, restart, re-check your class before each match |
| Classic Prestige entered via DMZ menus blocks new MP classes | Known issue, fix in test (Trello, Oct 25) | Delete MP classes that contain a relocked item |
| Loadouts not cleared properly when Prestiging | Fixed, October 25 update | Update the game |
| Game briefly froze when editing a Loadout for the first time in a match | Fixed, October 25 update | Update the game |
| DMZ Weapon Builds appeared usable in Core Multiplayer | Fixed, October 24 update | Rebuild that class with an MP weapon build |
| A non-Melee weapon could appear in the Melee slot | Fixed, October 24 update | Re-open the class and re-save it |
| Attachments didn't reset when Prestiging a weapon in Gunsmith | Fixed, October 24 update | Re-check attachments after a Weapon Prestige |
| DMZ Free Loadout loads you in with no weapons | Under investigation (Trello) | Deploy with your own gear until it's fixed |

Why can't I make a new class after Prestiging?
This is the most specific loadout bug in MW4 right now, and it has an official workaround. Infinity Ward's Trello board (MP Known Issues, updated October 25) says players who enter Classic Prestige through the DMZ menus instead of the Multiplayer menus can't create new Multiplayer classes until they delete their old classes that use relocked items.
The workaround, in Infinity Ward's words: players in this state "should review their existing MP Loadouts and delete any that include a relocked item. Once deleted, players can create new classes on their Prestige journey." The card also says a fix is "currently in test."
Here's why it happens. Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress in exchange for a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics. Your old classes still reference guns, perks and streaks you no longer own. If you came in through DMZ, those classes don't get cleaned up and they block new ones. Regular Prestige keeps every unlock and your Create-a-Class content intact, so it doesn't trigger this. The full trade-off is in our MW4 Prestige explained guide.
How to clear it:
- Open Create-a-Class from the Multiplayer menu.
- Look through each custom class for a lock icon on the primary, secondary, perks, equipment or killstreaks.
- Delete every class that has a relocked item. Don't just swap the item out.
- Create a new class from scratch using only what you have unlocked at your current level.
- Next time, enter Prestige from the Multiplayer menu until Infinity Ward confirms the fix is live.
Quick tip: if you go Classic, spend the Permanent Unlock Token on a perk, field upgrade, killstreak or equipment rather than a gun. Activision's own Prestige blog recommends this, because any Weapon Blueprint you get from the Store or a Battle Pass permanently unlocks that base weapon anyway.
Why did my loadouts disappear after Prestige?
Partly by design, partly a bug that's now fixed.
- By design: Classic Prestige resets Create-a-Class progress. If you picked Classic, losing items in your classes is expected. You climb back to Level 55 to re-unlock them. Our MW4 unlock levels list shows exactly which level gives back each gun, perk and killstreak.
- The bug: classes weren't always cleared cleanly. The October 25 update "Updated the Prestige reset process to ensure Loadouts are properly cleared when Prestiging." So after updating, a Classic Prestige should leave you with a clean slate, not broken half-classes.
- Weapon Prestige is separate. The October 24 update fixed attachments not resetting automatically when you Prestige a weapon in Gunsmith. A Weapon Prestige resets that gun's attachments, so any class using it needs rebuilding. Camos and blueprints are kept. Our MW4 Weapon Prestige guide covers what relocks and what stays.
- Timing: Activision notes that Weapon Prestige and Player Prestige are unavailable while you're searching for a match. Back out of matchmaking first, or the Prestige won't go through.
Why can't I create a class at all?
If Create-a-Class is greyed out, check your Player Level before anything else. Activision's launch blog states: "In Multiplayer, Create-a-Class customization unlocks at Player Level 4; before that point, choose from a variety of premade Default Loadouts to deploy with."
That catches two groups of players:
- Brand-new accounts on day one or two.
- Players who just went Classic Prestige. Your level drops back to 1, so Create-a-Class locks again until Level 4 on the new Prestige.
Level 4 comes quickly. If you've already prestiged and want the grind back to 55 shortened, see our fastest ways to rank up in MW4.
What's in an MW4 loadout, and what could fail to save?
It helps to know what each class holds, because a "not saving" report is sometimes just one slot reverting. Per Activision's Ready for Launch Create-a-Class blog:
- Operator per loadout. New in MW4: "players can now assign an individual Operator to each loadout." If your Operator keeps switching back, that's the per-class Operator field at the top of the loadout, not your global Operator.
- Killstreaks per loadout. In Multiplayer, "each loadout includes its own attached Killstreaks." Changing streaks on one class doesn't change the others.
- Pick 3 Perks. Perks return to a "streamlined Pick 3 System." Equip Overkill if you want a second primary in place of your secondary.
- Weapon builds. The Gunsmith screen shows five attachment slots plus a separate Apex slot. Gunny can suggest builds from the attachments you've already unlocked. Some beta Apex attachments were pulled for launch and Infinity Ward says "they will return soon." A missing Apex isn't a save bug. Our Apex attachments explainer covers which ones are live.

Are DMZ loadouts affected too?
DMZ has separate issues, not the Multiplayer save bug:
- Free Loadout spawns you with no weapons. Trello's DMZ Known Issues list it as under investigation (October 21). Until it's fixed, deploy with your own gear.
- Overflow Stash. The October 25 update closed a hole that let players deploy with items still in Overflow. Infinity Ward's note: "Operators must reconcile their Overflow Stash before the next deployment." If DMZ won't let you deploy, clear Overflow first.
- Saved Builds charging full price. Also fixed October 25: buying saved Builds from modified Blueprints could charge the original Blueprint's full cost.
- DMZ builds leaking into Multiplayer. Fixed October 24. If an MP class shows a DMZ build, rebuild it in Multiplayer Gunsmith.
For DMZ deployment and order blockers, see MW4 DMZ not working: the Gear Up order bug.
Is it a server problem instead?
Sometimes. Multiplayer runs through Activision's online services, so a dropped or timed-out connection can look like a save failure. Three checks:
- "Update Requires Restart" prompts. Infinity Ward's Trello logged these as caused by connection timeouts. If you get one, restart before editing classes. Otherwise you may be editing on a stale session.
- Server status. Check Activision's Online Services page or our is MW4 down guide before blaming your setup.
- Can't get online at all? Start with MW4 stuck on "Connecting to Online Services".
One reassurance from the same known-issues page: if your Combat Record or Leaderboards look empty, Activision says it's "a display issue only; stats are still being tracked." A blank stat screen doesn't mean your account or loadouts were wiped.
What's the fix checklist, in order?
- Fully update and restart MW4. The October 24 and 25 updates fixed five Multiplayer loadout problems, including the Prestige clear-out and the first-edit freeze.
- Confirm you're Level 4 or higher on your current Prestige. Below that, Create-a-Class is locked.
- Out of matchmaking? Edit classes and Prestige from the menu, not while searching for a match.
- Just did Classic Prestige? Delete every MP class with a relocked item, then build new ones. This is Infinity Ward's official workaround.
- Save one change at a time and back out to the main menu. Then re-open the class to confirm it stuck. If it reverts, you're hitting the open bug, not a user error.
- Test in the Firing Range. Activision says you can "cycle through your Loadouts without leaving the Firing Range (Multiplayer only)". It's a quick way to confirm which classes actually saved.
- Still reverting? Report it through the official MW4 Bug Report form. Include your Activision ID, platform, region, and the date and time it happened, as Infinity Ward's Trello asks.
What not to do: don't reinstall the game or delete local files for this bug. No official source lists a reinstall as a fix, and Activision is investigating the issue on its side.
When will MW4 loadouts be fixed?
There's no date for the main Multiplayer save bug yet. Activision lists it as "under investigation", and the Classic Prestige class bug has a fix "currently in test." Infinity Ward has shipped updates on October 23, 24 and 25, and says it's "not slowing down." The next big content drop is Season 1 on November 6, which also brings MW4 progression into Warzone (Season 1 roadmap). Expect a loadout fix either in a smaller update before then or with that patch. That's our read, not an official promise.
Want your MW4 classes built without the grind?
Rebuilding classes after a Classic Prestige means re-earning Level 55 and leveling every gun again to get its attachments back. If you'd rather spend launch week playing than re-grinding, all of our MW4 services are on the MW4 hub.
Lock in your MW4 setup now: bot lobbies, camo and weapon leveling are ready day one. timesaver.gg runs MW4 services on all platforms:
- MW4 Bot Lobbies: easy lobbies to test new classes and level fresh builds fast.
- MW4 Weapon Leveling: unlock the attachments your builds need, including after a Weapon Prestige.
- MW4 Account Leveling: back to Level 55 after a Classic Prestige, with every perk and streak unlocked.
- MW4 Mastery Camo Unlock: finish the camo grind on the guns you actually run.

FAQ
Why won't MW4 save my loadouts? Most likely you're hitting the known Multiplayer bug. Activision lists "I can't save Loadouts in Multiplayer" on all platforms as under investigation, with no workaround yet. Update and restart the game, make sure you're at least Player Level 4, and re-check each class before a match.
Why can't I make a new class in MW4 after Prestige? If you entered Classic Prestige from the DMZ menus, your old classes still contain relocked items and block new ones. Infinity Ward's official workaround is to delete every Multiplayer loadout with a relocked item, then create new classes. A fix is in test.
Does Classic Prestige delete my loadouts in MW4? It resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress, so items in your classes relock. Regular Prestige keeps all unlocks and your Create-a-Class content. Since the October 25 update, Classic Prestige clears loadouts properly instead of leaving broken classes.
What level do you unlock Create-a-Class in MW4? Player Level 4. Before that you can only pick premade Default Loadouts. After a Classic Prestige your level resets, so Create-a-Class is locked again until Level 4.
Why does my MW4 DMZ Free Loadout have no weapons? It's a known DMZ issue on Infinity Ward's Trello board and is under investigation. Deploy with your own gear until it's fixed. If DMZ won't let you deploy at all, clear your Overflow Stash first.
Are my MW4 stats and loadouts gone if the Combat Record is empty? No. Activision says missing Combat Record and Leaderboard stats are "a display issue only; stats are still being tracked." That is a separate known issue from loadout saving.
