Quick answer
The Magic Johnson GOAT Build in NBA 2K27 unlocks at Level 26 on the free Season 2 rewards track, the first of the three track GOAT Builds (Season 2 has been live since October 16, 2026). He's a 6'9" point guard, 215 lbs, with a 7'1" wingspan and the best playmaking numbers of all 18 GOAT Builds: 99 Pass Accuracy and 97 Ball Handle (both highest), 93 Speed With Ball, 95 Driving Layup and 93 Post Control. The catch is the jumper and the dunks: 70 Three-Point, which Cap Breakers can only raise to 75, plus 58 Driving Dunk and 70 Vertical. His 81.3 average rating is 2nd of 18 behind LeBron, and he unlocks 48 badges with zero Cap Breakers, 10 of them Hall of Fame. Attributes and animations are locked; Badges, Cap Breakers and Takeovers are yours. Everything below applies to Season 2 on Patch 2.0, checked October 21, 2026.
How do you unlock the Magic Johnson GOAT Build?
Magic is one of three GOAT Builds on the main Season 2 rewards track. 2K's Season 2 Courtside Report lists him at Level 26, with Dirk Nowitzki at Level 33 and Young Kobe at Level 37 (NBA 2K27 Season 2 Courtside Report). That makes Magic the earliest GOAT Build most players will earn without grinding REP or Lifetime Challenges.
- Earn Season XP in The City, MyCAREER and MyTEAM. 2K says players "earn XP in The City, MyCAREER, and MyTEAM on the way to Level 40" (2K Newsroom, October 14, 2026). All three modes fill the same track.
- Hit Level 26 and claim him. He's on the free track, not the paid Pro Pass, so you don't have to buy anything.
- Don't wait until the last week. Season progress resets when the Season ends, and 2K hasn't published the Season 2 end date yet.
Five days into the Season, the r/NBA2k threads are full of players reaching him right now. If you're short, our NBA 2K27 Season 2 leveling guide lists the fastest XP routes, and the Season 2 reward track shows everything else you pick up on the way.
What is the Magic Johnson GOAT Build?
GOAT Builds arrived with Season 2. 2K describes them as builds that "exceed the standard physical and attribute caps of the MyPLAYER Builder," adding that "the animations and stats are locked to preserve each player's authentic feel, while keeping full access to Badges, Cap Breakers, and more" (2K Newsroom).
Magic is the clearest example of that. A point guard made in the regular builder tops out at 6'7"; Magic is a 6'9" PG. The in-game build name is simply "Magic," it's the All-Time Los Angeles Lakers version, and the builder blurb reads "Five-position versatility, clutch playmaking, and elite rebounding. The ultimate high-IQ conductor of the court."
| Spec | Magic Johnson GOAT Build |
|---|---|
| Position | Point Guard |
| Height / Weight | 6'9" / 215 lbs |
| Wingspan | 7'1" |
| Potential overall | 99 |
| Unlock | Season 2 rewards track, Level 26 |
| Locked | Attributes, signature animations, jump shot |
| Yours to set | Badges, Cap Breakers, Takeovers |
What are the Magic Johnson GOAT Build's attributes?
These are the fixed ratings at 99 OVR, cross-checked between NBA2KLab's GOAT Builds database and goatbuilds.wiki on October 21 (both list identical numbers). The right column is the ceiling after you put every available Cap Breaker slot into that attribute, using NBA2KLab's per-slot values.
| Attribute | Base (99 OVR) | Max with Cap Breakers |
|---|---|---|
| Close Shot | 90 | 95 |
| Driving Layup | 95 | 99 |
| Driving Dunk | 58 | 86 |
| Standing Dunk | 60 | 87 |
| Post Control | 93 | 98 |
| Mid-Range Shot | 87 | 87 (maxed) |
| Three-Point Shot | 70 | 75 |
| Free Throw | 85 | 95 |
| Pass Accuracy | 99 | 99 (maxed) |
| Ball Handle | 97 | 97 (maxed) |
| Speed With Ball | 93 | 93 (maxed) |
| Interior Defense | 80 | 85 |
| Perimeter Defense | 80 | 85 |
| Steal | 73 | 81 |
| Block | 65 | 74 |
| Offensive Rebound | 74 | 86 |
| Defensive Rebound | 84 | 88 |
| Speed | 87 | 87 (maxed) |
| Agility | 83 | 83 (maxed) |
| Strength | 85 | 86 |
| Vertical | 70 | 83 |
Lined up against all 18 GOAT Builds, three things stand out:
- He's the best ball-handler and passer in the set. 99 Pass Accuracy is outright first (LeBron is next at 90), 97 Ball Handle is outright first (Penny 95), and 95 Driving Layup ties Jordan and LeBron for the top spot. 93 Speed With Ball is second only to Derrick Rose's 99.
- He's built like a forward. 85 Strength ranks 4th of 18, and 84 Defensive Rebound beats every other guard GOAT by a wide margin (Penny and Arenas sit at 60, Rose at 45).
- He is not an athlete or a shooter. 70 Vertical is 17th of 18, 58 Driving Dunk is 16th, 83 Agility is 12th, and 70 Three-Point ties for 12th. The jumper has no room to grow: Mid-Range is already maxed at 87, and the three-point line only has five +1 slots.
What badges does the Magic Johnson GOAT Build get?
Badges are yours to equip, but the tiers you can reach still depend on the ratings, the same way attribute breakpoints and badge thresholds work on any build. With zero Cap Breakers spent, NBA2KLab lists 48 badges. Only LeBron's build unlocks more (49), and Magic's 10 Hall of Fame badges trail only Dirk's 11.
- Playmaking (10): Ankle Assassin, Bail Out, Break Starter, Dimer, Handles for Days, Lightning Launch, Pace, Unpluckable and Versatile Visionary, all nine at Hall of Fame, plus Strong Handle at Silver.
- Finishing (10): Float Game Hall of Fame; Ghost Stepper, Hook Specialist, Layup Mixmaster, Paint Prodigy, Physical Finisher and Post Spin Catalyst at Gold; Post Powerhouse Silver; Aerial Wizard and Rise Up Bronze.
- Shooting (7): Post Fade Phenom and Static Middy at Gold; Deadeye and Smooth Operator Silver; Arc Cadence, Quick Trigger and Set and Fire Bronze.
- Defense (10): Off-Ball Pest Gold, Immovable Enforcer Silver, then Ankle Braces, Challenger, Glove, Interceptor, Pick Dodger, Post Lockdown, Seatbelt and Wall-Up at Bronze.
- Rebounding (5): Sync Snatcher Gold, Boxout Boss Silver, Breaker, Crasher and Possession Closer Bronze.
- Physicals (6): Flash, Slippery Off-Ball and Work Horse at Gold; Brick Wall, Bruiser and Pogo Stick Silver.
Nine Hall of Fame playmaking badges is the headline, but Float Game at Hall of Fame is what makes him score. One player who ran into him in Rec described exactly that: "once he got a step it was just floater after floater. I couldn't contest from behind and floater off before help could come." If you haven't used the floater much this year, our how to do floaters in NBA 2K27 guide covers the controls.
Where should you put Cap Breakers on the Magic GOAT Build?
Two rules from 2K Support first: you can put a maximum of 5 Cap Breakers into one attribute, and once applied they're permanent. Preview the boost in the MyPLAYER Builder before you commit.
Six of Magic's attributes are already maxed with no slots at all (Mid-Range, Pass Accuracy, Ball Handle, Speed With Ball, Speed and Agility), so his Cap Breakers all go into finishing, defense and rebounding. NBA2KLab's slot values:
| Attribute | First Cap Breaker | All slots | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving Dunk | +8 | +28 (5 slots) | 86 |
| Standing Dunk | +7 | +27 (5 slots) | 87 |
| Free Throw | +4 | +10 (3 slots) | 95 |
| Vertical | +3 | +13 (5 slots) | 83 |
| Offensive Rebound | +3 | +12 (5 slots) | 86 |
| Block / Steal | +2 | +9 / +8 (5 slots) | 74 / 81 |
| Three-Point / Close Shot / Post | +1 | +5 (5 slots) | 75 / 95 / 98 |
| Interior / Perimeter Defense | +1 | +5 (5 slots) | 85 / 85 |
| Strength | +1 | +1 (1 slot) | 86 |
Our order for a pass-first Magic in Season 2:
- Driving Dunk, first two (58 → 73). +15 for two Cap Breakers is the best value on the build. You won't turn him into a dunker (NBA2KLab lists only the Rim Grazer and Basic packages for his two- and one-foot dunks), but a 6'9" guard who can finish an open-lane dunk instead of laying it up is harder to stop in transition.
- Free Throw, all three (85 → 95). Three Cap Breakers for +10, and a ball-dominant guard goes to the line a lot. This is the cheapest way to add points.
- Vertical, first two (70 → 76). It's his second-worst rating, and lifting it helps every contest and rebound a 7'1" wingspan should be winning.
- Block, first two (65 → 69). Only if you want him switching onto bigs, which his 85 Strength lets him do.
Skip: Three-Point (+1 per slot, 75 max), Close Shot, Post Control, Interior and Perimeter Defense (+1 each). The Level 40 Cap Breaker on the same track is a natural first spend. For priority logic on any build, see where to put Cap Breakers in NBA 2K27.
Does the Magic GOAT Build actually play point guard?
Yes, on paper and, by most player reports, in matchmaking too. The builder lists him as a PG, and in the r/NBA2k "Is the Dirk/magic GOAT worth it?" thread one player who runs him in random Rec said "because of the 99 pass it does put me at point 99% of the time." 2K hasn't explained exactly how Rec assigns positions, so treat that as a player report, not a rule.
The same thread is a good reality check on how he plays. One player said "I play random rec with it and I get a triple double almost every game," while another had "little confidence making quick passes" on their current build and was considering Magic for exactly that reason. Both line up with the numbers: the passing and handle carry him, the jumper doesn't.
How he compares with the other three point guard GOAT Builds (NBA2KLab base ratings):
| Build | Height / Wingspan | Pass / Handle | 3PT / Mid | Layup / Dunk | Def. Rebound | Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Johnson | 6'9" / 7'1" | 99 / 97 | 70 / 87 | 95 / 58 | 84 | Season Lv 26 |
| Penny Hardaway | 6'7" / 6'11" | 85 / 95 | 80 / 89 | 87 / 89 | 60 | Day one |
| Gilbert Arenas | 6'3" / 6'10" | 80 / 92 | 89 / 93 | 90 / 80 | 60 | Day one |
| Derrick Rose | 6'3" / 6'8" | 80 / 92 | 70 / 89 | 94 / 99 | 45 | REP Elite VIII |
If you want a scoring point guard, Arenas is the shooter (89 three, 93 mid) and Rose is the athlete (99 Speed, 99 Vertical, 99 Driving Dunk). Magic is the only one who is a true table-setter with size, and he's the only PG GOAT who can rebound.
Magic or Dirk: which Season 2 track GOAT is worth it?
You'll earn both on the same track, seven levels apart, so this is less "which one" than "which one do you main." They're opposites:
| Magic Johnson (Lv 26) | Dirk Nowitzki (Lv 33) | |
|---|---|---|
| Position / Height | PG, 6'9" | 7'1" big |
| Three-Point / Mid-Range | 70 / 87 | 96 / 99 |
| Pass / Ball Handle / Speed With Ball | 99 / 97 / 93 | 80 / 60 / 45 |
| Perimeter Defense / Block | 80 / 65 | 45 / 80 |
| Speed | 87 | 60 |
| Badges (Hall of Fame) at 0 Cap Breakers | 48 (10) | 35 (11) |
Pick Magic if you want the ball in your hands, run the offense and play fast. Pick Dirk if you want to spot up, punish switches in the post and shoot over everyone (99 Mid-Range, 96 Three, 99 Close Shot and 99 Post Control), and you're fine being one of the slowest builds on the floor. The player view in that thread was the same as ours: "Magic is definitely worth it if fits your play style."
Is the Magic Johnson GOAT Build worth it?
Yes, if you're a pass-first point guard. He's free at Level 26, he has the best passing and handle in the game's GOAT lineup, and his average rating trails only LeBron, who needs REP Legend I. For most players, Magic is the shortest route to a top-two GOAT Build.
No, if you score off the catch or above the rim. A 70 three that maxes at 75 lets defenders go under every screen, and 70 Vertical with Rim Grazer dunks means he scores with layups and floaters, not posters. As one player in the "Would you invest in the GOAT builds now?" thread put it, "it's only worth it if the goat build fits your play style." If you want full control over your jumper, a custom build from our best point guard build guide is the better route.
Season 2 is five days old, and 2K can retune GOAT Builds in a later patch the way Patch 2.0 retuned shooting. We'll update this page if Magic's ratings change. For all 18 legends and how each unlocks, see the NBA 2K27 GOAT Builds guide.
FAQ
What level is the Magic Johnson GOAT Build in NBA 2K27? Level 26 on the free Season 2 rewards track, per 2K's Season 2 Courtside Report. He's the first of the three track GOAT Builds, ahead of Dirk Nowitzki (Level 33) and Young Kobe (Level 37).
Is the Magic GOAT Build in the Pro Pass? No. Magic is on the main Season 2 rewards track, which everyone earns XP toward in The City, MyCAREER and MyTEAM. You don't need to buy the Pro Pass.
How tall is the Magic Johnson GOAT Build? 6'9" and 215 lbs with a 7'1" wingspan. That's taller than the 6'7" limit for a point guard in the regular MyPLAYER Builder. You can't change height, weight or wingspan on a GOAT Build.
Can you fix Magic's three-point shot with Cap Breakers? Not much. His Three-Point Shot is 70 at 99 OVR and has five Cap Breaker slots worth +1 each, so the maximum is 75. Mid-Range is already maxed at 87.
What are the best Cap Breakers for the Magic GOAT Build? The first two Driving Dunk slots (+8 and +7), then all three Free Throw slots (+10 total), then the first two Vertical slots (+6). Three-Point, Close Shot, Post Control and both defense ratings gain only +1 per slot. Cap Breakers are permanent, so preview them first.
Can you change Magic Johnson's jump shot? No. GOAT Build animations are locked. Magic uses a Magic Johnson jump shot base and upper releases, which NBA2KLab lists at "Normal 50%/50%" release speed and blending, along with Magic Johnson layups, floater and pass style.
