PoE Blight Farming Guide 3.29: Towers, Oils & Currency

Sam Okonkwo

Path of Exile Blight encounter in progress showing the purification pump, fungal tendril lanes, defensive towers and the Pump Durability meter

Blight is one of the most reliable, low-effort currency farms in Path of Exile 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame," and it barely cares how good your build is. Instead of out-damaging a screen of monsters, you play a tower-defense minigame: build and upgrade towers to protect a pump while waves march down tendril lanes, then collect chests full of Oils and Blighted Maps. This guide covers the mechanic, the Atlas tree, the scarabs, and exactly how to turn Blight into Divine Orbs in 3.29.

Quick answer: In PoE 3.29, run Blight on tight, enclosed maps to concentrate reward chests, build a freeze plus stun plus empower tower core to lock the lanes, and take the Blight Scarab with the Fungal Horizons and Epidemiology Atlas passives. Your money comes from Oils (Crimson, Opalescent, Silver, Golden) and Blighted / Blight-Ravaged Maps, not from map monsters, so it works on a cheap, poorly-geared character. The Blight league mechanic was not changed in 3.29.0 or 3.29.1, so every proven strategy still prints.

Last verified: 2026-09-10, against the official 3.29.0 and 3.29.1 patch notes, poedb.tw and Maxroll. Applies to Path of Exile 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" (launched 2026-07-24).

What is Blight in Path of Exile?

Blight is a league mechanic, now a permanent part of the core game, run by the NPC Sister Cassia. When Blight appears in one of your maps, a fungal growth spawns. Approaching it lets you target it with a purification pump to start the encounter. From that point a timer runs and monsters begin marching out of tendrils attached to the growth, following a fixed path toward your pump. If enough monsters reach the pump and drain its life to zero, you fail and get drastically reduced rewards.

Your job is not to kill everything yourself. It's to build defensive towers along the lanes with the resources the encounter gives you (and more resources from slain monsters), slowing and killing the waves before they reach the pump. As the official description puts it:

"For each tendril lane you defend, a chest will appear with your rewards."

pathofexile.com/blight

That's the whole loop, and it's why Blight is beginner-friendly: the towers do the killing, so a low-damage, poorly-geared character can farm it from early maps all the way to endgame Blighted Maps. If you've run other on-map mechanics like Ritual or Delirium, the stand-and-defend rhythm will feel familiar, but Blight rewards tower placement over raw clear speed.

How the Blight encounter works

A few mechanics decide how much you actually walk away with:

  • Reward chests come from tendril lanes. When you complete a Blight, the defended tendrils turn into loot chests. Higher-tier maps spawn more blighted reward chests per growth, but crucially, the number of tendrils has no impact on how many reward chests spawn.
  • The Signature Reward tendril. You're guaranteed at least one tendril whose chests are all blighted reward chests: the ones that drop the valuable Blighted Maps and Oils used for anointments. Concentrating your defence and your reward-focus onto that lane is the core of every good Blight strategy.
  • Fewer tendrils = better. The number of tendrils scales with the open space around the growth. On a tight, enclosed map fewer tendrils spawn, which concentrates the reward chests. Maxroll states the principle bluntly:

"The tighter the map the better as fewer tendrils will spawn guaranteeing more blight reward chests."

Maxroll Blight Farming Guide

  • Enemy pathing is fixed. Monsters must follow the exact tendril path drawn on the ground. Use that: choke points let a small tower cluster handle a whole lane.
  • Blight Bosses. Higher-tier tendrils can spawn one or more bosses. They're dangerous, but each one killed adds an extra reward chest, a real profit boost if your setup can handle them.
  • Drop a portal first. Place a portal at the start of the encounter. Dying does not pause a Blight, so if you go down you can run straight back in and keep building instead of losing the whole map.

Towers: the freeze + stun + empower core

Sister Cassia's arsenal covers chill, shock, stun, burn, summon, empower, petrify and debilitate. You don't need all of them. The community-standard setup for a low-effort farm is a three-tower core placed at a choke point: a freeze/chilling tower to trap the lane, a stun/Seismic tower to suppress monster actions, and an Empowering tower to buff the damage of everything nearby. Auxiliary shock and minion/Sentinel towers clean up whatever leaks through.

Two practical notes players consistently repeat this league: keep your freeze, stun and empower towers at level 3 (leveling them to 4 mutates their behaviour into effects that don't help a zero-attack tower build), and build within about two screens of the pump so your towers' range actually reaches the lanes. When you hit an upgrade decision point on your damage towers, taking the Sentinel path (durable flying-robot minions) gives strong single-target damage for dealing with Blight bosses.

Oils and anointments: Blight's signature currency

Sister Cassia, the Path of Exile NPC who runs Blight encounters and applies oil anointments to your jewellery

Oils are the reason Blight makes money. They drop from blighted reward chests and are Blight's exclusive currency, used for anointments. There are 13 standard oil tiers, lowest to highest:

Clear, Sepia, Amber, Verdant, Teal, Azure, Indigo, Violet, Crimson, Black, Opalescent, Silver, and Golden, the top tier. (There are also special variants: Tainted Oils drop from corrupted maps, plus Reflective and Prismatic oils.)

Anointing works two ways:

  • Amulet, three oils. Sister Cassia can enchant your amulet with any Notable Passive Skill from the tree, chosen by the three-oil recipe. The official line:

"Combine three Oils to enchant your Amulet with any Notable Passive Skill from the Skill Tree."

pathofexile.com/blight

  • Ring, two oils. A two-oil recipe adds a Blight tower modifier to a ring, for example making your meteor towers leave burning ground. This is how you upgrade tower effects persistently, rather than "anointing a tower" directly.

For selling, the top-tier oils (Golden, Silver and Opalescent) carry the most value, with Crimson the most valuable of the mid oils. A common early strategy is to run a cheap, self-funding anoint on the map itself (Clear + Sepia + Amber reduces monster movement speed, boosts tower damage, and cuts tower build/upgrade costs), then bank the high-tier oils to sell. Always verify current oil rates on poe.ninja before pricing anything, since oil values swing hard through a league.

Blighted Maps vs Blight-Ravaged Maps

The other half of Blight's income is maps:

  • Blighted Maps are special maps where the entire map is one giant Blight encounter: a single, huge tower-defense run with many lanes and dense rewards. They drop from blighted reward chests and are the workhorse of a dedicated Blight farm.
  • Blight-Ravaged Maps are the rarer, far higher-reward version, with more lanes, more chests, and more oils. They rarely drop on their own. The reliable way to generate them is the Blight Scarab of Blooming, which converts Tier 14+ Blighted Maps found in your maps into Blight-Ravaged Maps instead.

Running Blighted and Blight-Ravaged Maps is where a Blight farmer converts a stockpile of maps into a steady stream of oils and currency, and through bulk oil and map sales, Divine Orbs.

Best Atlas passives for Blight in 3.29

The Blight cluster on the Atlas passive tree massively increases your yield. The high-value nodes (verified on Maxroll for 3.29):

  • Fungal Horizons: +60% more chance to find Blighted Maps in Blight Chests, and grants Blightreach (a chance for maps you find to drop as Blighted Maps). This scales your Blighted-Map income with your overall map drops, and is a keystone of the strategy.
  • Epidemiology: every Blight chest in your maps has a 20% chance to be openable again. Roughly a 20% average uplift to your Blight-chest drops.
  • Blightspawn: makes one lane guarded only by Blight Bosses, with a 10% chance per boss killed to add an extra reward chest.
  • Templar Ingenuity: lets you salvage your towers after the encounter for extra rewards, better for more tower types and higher-tier towers.
  • Immune Response: increases spawn rate (faster encounters, more efficient farming) at the cost of higher difficulty.
  • Fungal Bloom: increases the base chance to encounter Blights; useful if you're short on Blight Scarabs.
  • Cassia's Pride: a keystone that empowers your towers by 300% but reduces your damage to blighted enemies to one quarter. It's the purest "let the towers carry" node: great early if your character struggles, less efficient at full investment.

Note what does not help: Increased Item Quantity and Rarity do not affect blighted reward chests. The chests are the main loot source, so IIQ/IIR only touch the generic monster drops. Don't build your Blight map rolls around them.

Best Blight scarabs (3.29)

All four Blight scarabs are live on the current poedb list. Their exact effects:

  • Blight Scarab: "Area contains a Blight Encounter." The baseline; always run at least this to guarantee a Blight every map.
  • Blight Scarab of the Blightheart: the encounter has one blighted chest, but it grows larger and more rewarding the more blighted enemies you slay (plus extra enemy waves). A single, much richer chest.
  • Blight Scarab of Blooming: adds up to 3 Unique Bosses (with +100% life) and converts Tier 14+ Blighted Maps found in the area into Blight-Ravaged Maps. This is your Ravaged-Map generator.
  • Blight Scarab of Invigoration: each Empowering Tower grants nearby blighted monsters increased difficulty and reward.

As with every mechanic scarab, you can layer Blight scarabs alongside another lane — pairing them with Delve sulphite runs or a Divination card map strategy lets one map feed two income streams.

Best maps for Blight

Because tighter maps concentrate reward chests, the goal is a fast, enclosed layout. Maxroll's Tier-1 picks for 3.29:

  • Toxic Sewer: fast and enclosed; a long-standing Blight favourite.
  • Waste Pool: quick to clear with a tight layout.
  • Core Map: the tightest layout for maximum chest concentration (its boss can be awkward, so weigh that against your build).

For Blighted-Map farming specifically, players this league favour T13+ maps as the base, since higher tiers unlock the top oil drops, and corrupting eligible maps to fish for Tainted Oils. Avoid rolling map mods like "Monsters cannot be chilled or stunned" or "Monsters cannot have movement speed reduced" — both cripple your tower crowd control.

Why Blight is a great low-effort currency farm in 3.29

Blight's edge is that it's decoupled from your character's damage. The towers kill, so a cheap, low-DPS character farms it as effectively as a mirror-tier build, and the Cassia's Pride keystone leans into that by empowering towers 300% while gutting your own damage. That makes Blight ideal for league-start currency, for a fresh alt, or for a low-risk, AFK-leaning farm. Dying doesn't stop the encounter; you just respawn and keep building.

The 3.29-specific edge: the Blight league mechanic received no buff, nerf or rework in 3.29.0 or 3.29.1. The patch notes buffed the Blight skill gem, a completely separate channelled spell, not the tower-defense mechanic. The mechanics reworked this league were Abyss, Legion and Talisman, so if you farm those, check the current Betrayal meta too. Every proven Blight strategy carries over unchanged.

If you'd rather skip the grind, you can buy Oils, Blighted Maps and the Divine Orbs they sell for directly, or have a service handle the heavy anoint/boss lanes:

FAQ

Was Blight changed in PoE 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame"? No. The Blight league mechanic — towers, oils, Blighted and Blight-Ravaged Maps, Sister Cassia, and the Blight scarabs — received no buff, nerf or rework in the 3.29.0 or 3.29.1 patch notes. The 3.29 patch did buff the Blight skill gem (a separate channelled chaos spell), which is not the same thing. The mechanics that were reworked in 3.29 were Abyss, Legion and Talisman. That makes Blight a reliable, unchanged farm this league.

Do I need a strong build to farm Blight? No — that's the whole appeal. Blight is a tower-defense encounter, so your towers deal the damage, not your character. A poorly-geared, low-damage character can farm Blight effectively from early maps to endgame Blighted Maps. Strip attack gear and keep life/resistances if you're building a dedicated tower-carry setup with the Cassia's Pride keystone.

How do you make currency from Blight? Two income streams: Oils (the anointment currency — Golden, Silver, Opalescent and Crimson are the valuable ones) and Blighted / Blight-Ravaged Maps, both dropping from blighted reward chests. You sell oils and maps in bulk, which convert into Divine Orbs. Always verify current rates on poe.ninja before pricing.

What are the best Atlas passives for Blight? Prioritise Fungal Horizons (more Blighted Maps + Blightreach), Epidemiology (20% chance to re-open Blight chests), and Blightspawn (a boss-only lane with bonus chests). Add Templar Ingenuity for tower salvage and Immune Response for faster encounters. Take Cassia's Pride early if your character can't handle the waves.

What's the difference between Blighted Maps and Blight-Ravaged Maps? A Blighted Map turns the entire map into one large Blight encounter with many lanes and dense rewards. A Blight-Ravaged Map is the rarer, much higher-reward version with more lanes and chests. Ravaged maps rarely drop naturally — the reliable source is the Blight Scarab of Blooming, which converts Tier 14+ Blighted Maps into Blight-Ravaged Maps.

What are oils used for in Path of Exile? Oils are Blight's exclusive currency, used for anointments. Three oils on an amulet (via Sister Cassia) grant any Notable Passive Skill from the tree; two oils on a ring add a Blight tower modifier. There are 13 standard oil tiers from Clear up to Golden, plus Tainted oils from corrupted maps.
