Quick answer: In Path of Exile 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame," any set of same-category items whose quality totals 40% or more sells to a vendor for one matching quality currency: gems for a Gemcutter's Prism, flasks for a Glassblower's Bauble, weapons for a Blacksmith's Whetstone, armour for an Armourer's Scrap. Gems, weapons and armour also have a shortcut: a single 20%-quality piece returns one currency on its own. Flasks are the exception, and must be batched to 40%. These four recipes were not touched by any 3.29 patch (verified against the 3.29.0 and 3.29.1 patch notes on poedb), so everything below is current for the live league (last verified 16 September 2026).
Quality currency is the cheapest, most reliable free income in Path of Exile. You pick up quality gems, flasks and gear the whole campaign, most of it goes straight to the vendor. Sell it correctly and that junk pile turns into a stack of Gemcutter's Prisms and Glassblower's Baubles instead of a handful of useless alterations. Sell it wrong, and you leave half of it on the table. This guide covers the exact thresholds, the single-item shortcuts, what each currency actually does when you use it, and the batching mistake that quietly halves your yield.
If you'd rather skip the grind entirely and buy the crafting currency your build needs, we sell it with instant delivery, but the recipes below cost nothing but the vendor trip, so learn them first.

What "quality currency" means in Path of Exile
Path of Exile has no gold economy for trade: everything is bartered in currency orbs, and each orb does a specific job. The four "quality" currencies are the humblest tier, but you use them constantly:
- Gemcutter's Prism (GCP) — adds quality to skill gems.
- Glassblower's Bauble — adds quality to flasks.
- Blacksmith's Whetstone — adds quality to weapons.
- Armourer's Scrap — adds quality to armour.
Quality is a flat bonus that scales the item's core stat: a gem's numbers, a flask's effect, a weapon's damage, an armour piece's defences. Normal (white) and magic (blue) gear caps at 20% quality; rares, uniques and skill gems also cap at 20%, but rare and unique gear gains far less quality per currency use than a white base does.
The reason these currencies matter is the vendor recipe that produces them. You do not need to farm a specific map or run a mechanic. You just sell the quality items you're already picking up, and done right, it is close to free currency every single map.
The core rule: 40% total quality = one currency
Here is the rule that covers all four, verified against the current item behaviour on poedb:
Sell any number of same-category items whose total quality is at least 40% to any vendor, and you receive one of the matching quality currency.
"Same-category" is the important part: you cannot mix a gem and a flask to reach 40%. Each currency has its own bucket:
| Sell these (quality totalling ≥40%) | You receive |
|---|---|
| Skill gems | 1 Gemcutter's Prism |
| Flasks | 1 Glassblower's Bauble |
| Weapons | 1 Blacksmith's Whetstone |
| Armour pieces | 1 Armourer's Scrap |
The threshold is "at least 40%", not "exactly 40%." A single 39%-quality item won't fire the recipe; a pair totalling 41% will, and you still get exactly one currency. Anything over 40% in a single sale is wasted, which is why deliberate 40% groupings matter (more on that below).
The single-item shortcut (gems, weapons, armour)
Three of the four categories have a faster path that a lot of players miss:
- A single skill gem at 20% quality → 1 Gemcutter's Prism.
- A single weapon with 20% quality → 1 Blacksmith's Whetstone.
- A single armour piece with 20% quality → 1 Armourer's Scrap.
You do not need to batch these to 40%. One maxed-quality item is a full currency on its own. This is why 20%-quality drops and corrupted 20%+ items are worth grabbing off the ground even when you don't want the item itself.
Flasks are the exception. There is no single-item flask recipe: a lone 20%-quality flask gives you nothing. Flasks must be batched so their quality totals at least 40%. In practice, sell flasks in pairs (two 20% flasks = 40% = one Bauble) or fold a 20% and two 10% flasks together.
What each quality currency does when you use it
Knowing the yield is half the picture; knowing what the currency does tells you whether to sell it or use it. All caps are 20% quality on the item.
| Currency | Quality added per use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gemcutter's Prism | +1% flat, any gem | Takes 20 GCP to fully quality a fresh gem from 0→20%. |
| Blacksmith's Whetstone | Normal +5%, Magic +2%, Rare/Unique +1% | Quality a white weapon before you craft; 4 Whetstones = 20%. |
| Armourer's Scrap | Normal +5%, Magic +2%, Rare/Unique +1% | Same math as the Whetstone, for body armour, helmets, gloves, boots, shields. |
| Glassblower's Bauble | Scales with item level (lower ilvl = more per bauble); uniques +1% flat | The exact Normal/Magic numbers vary by item level; there is no fixed 5/2/1 like weapons and armour. |
Two things worth internalising here:
- Quality a base while it's still white. A Normal item takes +5% per Whetstone or Scrap, so four currencies max it out. Once it's a rare, each currency gives only +1%, so it takes twenty. Always quality before you alt/regal/craft, never after.
- GCP is 1% flat regardless of rarity, so a gem is a gem, but that also means a fully-quality 20% gem cost roughly 20 GCP to make. Selling a 20% gem for a single GCP is close to break-even (see the FAQ).

Where the free currency actually comes from
The recipes are only as good as the junk you feed them. The best low-effort sources of quality items during a normal 3.29 league:
- Campaign and early-map drops. Low-level gems, flasks and white gear drop constantly and you replace them fast, so dump the quality ones into vendor stacks instead of alt-shattering them.
- Quality "scrap" gems. Support gems you'll never use, drop-only gems, and duplicate skill gems all count toward the 40% GCP recipe. Hold a tab of low-quality gems and sell them in 40% batches.
- Flasks off vendors and drops. Flasks roll quality freely; two 20% flasks is a Bauble, and you cycle through dozens of flasks levelling.
- 20% corrupted / dropped gear. Anything that drops at or above 20% quality is a single-item Whetstone or Scrap the moment you don't need it.
None of this competes with a real currency farm like Charts and Voyages or Expedition, but it's income you're otherwise throwing away, and it costs zero map time.
What 3.29 changed (and what it didn't)
This is the part that generates comment-section corrections, so let's be precise. Curse of the Allflame did NOT change any of the four quality vendor recipes. The 3.29.0 launch notes and the 3.29.1 patch make no mention of Gemcutter's Prisms, Glassblower's Baubles, Whetstones, Armourer's Scraps, or the 40% quality recipe. They are core-stable mechanics and work exactly as they did in 3.28.
What 3.29 did overhaul is the socket-colour system, and it's easy to conflate the two because both touch "crafting currency." The 3.29.0 notes state it plainly: "Gems can now be Socketed into any Equipment Socket, even if the Gem Colour does not match the Socket Colour." Sockets are white by default, matching a coloured socket now gives a +10% quality bonus, and Chromatic Orbs became rarer and are no longer sold by town vendors. That is a completely separate change from the quality recipes. If you're reading an old 3.28 guide, the quality recipes carried over untouched; the socket and chromatic advice did not. We cover that shift in full in our socket colours and the RGB chromatic recipe guide.
The other big evergreen vendor recipe, the chaos recipe, also survived 3.29 intact, as did the 6-link and 6-socket recipes. If you want to turn recipe currency into real profit, pair these with a proper farm like the best currency farming strategies for 3.29 or the reliable Expedition/Tujen lane.
The batching mistake that halves your yield
The single most common quality-recipe error: assuming the vendor scans your whole sale for total quality. It does not. Each 40% combination must independently reach the threshold.
Say you drop six gems totalling 80% quality into the sell window: 19% + 13% + 15% + 9% + 17% + 7%. You'd expect two GCP. You get one, because the vendor can't form two clean 40%+ sub-sets from those exact numbers before it stops. The fix is to sell in deliberate 40% groupings (think "two 20s" or "20 + 12 + 8" per batch) and run separate sales rather than dumping everything at once.
The efficient habit: keep a stash tab per category, and when you have enough, sell in exact 40% clusters. It's the difference between one Bauble and three from the same pile of flasks.
FAQ
What is the quality vendor recipe in Path of Exile? Sell any number of same-category items (gems, flasks, weapons, or armour) whose quality totals at least 40% to any vendor, and you get one matching quality currency: a Gemcutter's Prism for gems, a Glassblower's Bauble for flasks, a Blacksmith's Whetstone for weapons, or an Armourer's Scrap for armour. Gems, weapons and armour also give one currency for a single 20%-quality item.
Does a single 20% quality flask give a Glassblower's Bauble? No. Flasks are the one category with no single-item recipe — a lone 20% flask returns nothing. You must batch flasks so their quality totals at least 40%, so sell them in pairs (two 20% flasks = one Bauble).
How many Gemcutter's Prisms does it take to fully quality a gem? Twenty. Each Gemcutter's Prism adds a flat 1% quality regardless of gem rarity, and gems cap at 20% quality. Because of that, selling an already-20% gem for one GCP is roughly break-even: the value is in gems that dropped with quality or that you're not using.
Did 3.29 Curse of the Allflame change the quality recipes? No. The 3.29.0 and 3.29.1 patch notes make no changes to the Gemcutter's Prism, Glassblower's Bauble, Blacksmith's Whetstone or Armourer's Scrap recipes. The recipes you learned in 3.28 still work. 3.29 did change the separate socket-colour and Chromatic Orb system — don't confuse the two.
Should I quality an item before or after crafting it? Before, always. A Normal (white) weapon or armour piece gains +5% quality per Whetstone or Scrap, so four currencies max it to 20%. Once the item is rare, each currency adds only +1%, so it takes twenty to do the same job. Quality the white base first, then craft.
Why did I only get one currency when I sold a big pile? Because the vendor needs each 40% combination to reach the threshold independently — it does not total your whole sale. Sell in deliberate 40% groupings and run separate sales to get the full number of currencies from a stack.
