Quick answer: The Vessel of Kulemak is the Abyss pinnacle encounter in Path of Exile 2 0.5 Return of the Ancients, fought in the Black Cathedral. You get in with a Kulemak's Invitation, which drops 100% of the time from one of two Abyssal Commander bosses — Tasgul, Swallower of Light or Vandroth, Blackblooded Enslaver — in level 79+ Abyssal Depths. Use the Invitation at the Well of Souls, drop into the Black Cathedral, and fight the Vessel as a revival gauntlet: after each kill you pick one of three petrified Liches (Amanamu, Ulaman, Kurgal) to stamp a Desecrated modifier onto a brand-new Grip of Kulemak ring — up to 3 mods, one per faction. Beat it at Full Strength and you walk away with the fully-rolled ring, and — if you're on a Lich — the encounter unlocks the Abyssal Lich sub-ascendancy. As of 0.5.3 (June 19, 2026) the fight got more worth farming: it now drops Ancient Jawbones, Ribs and Collarbones, and the Grip of Kulemak gained 13 new Abyssal Wasting modifiers.
If you've pushed into level 79+ maps this league and started seeing the Abyss go vertical — fissures dropping into the Abyssal Depths, Commanders guarding the final trove — the Vessel of Kulemak is the chase at the end of that road. It's the only source of the Grip of Kulemak ring, the only path to the Abyssal Lich ascendancy, and after the 0.5.3 buffs it's a legitimate currency target on top of being a build unlock. This guide breaks down exactly how to find the Invitation, how the gauntlet works, how to roll the ring you actually want, and whether it's worth farming or buying a carry.

What Is the Vessel of Kulemak in PoE2?
The Vessel of Kulemak is an Abyssal boss encounter added in 0.5 Return of the Ancients, sitting at the deep end of the reworked Abyss mechanic. It's fought in a dedicated arena — the Black Cathedral — that you reach through the Well of Souls, not on any map you walk to (PoE2 Wiki: Vessel of Kulemak).
Mechanically it's not a single boss kill — it's a revival gauntlet. You drop the Vessel, then deliberately resurrect it again and again, and each resurrection makes it stronger: faster attacks, an extra wave of minions, or another damage type stacked onto the last. In exchange, every cycle lets you imprint power onto a unique ring. It's the rare PoE2 pinnacle where the reward is crafted by how you fight it, not just dropped at the end.
Two things make it matter in 0.5.3 specifically: it's the only way to get the Grip of Kulemak ring, and for Lich-line characters it's the only way to unlock the Abyssal Lich sub-ascendancy. Everything else about the encounter flows from those two payoffs.
How Do You Get Kulemak's Invitation?
You can't walk into the Black Cathedral — you need a Kulemak's Invitation, an Abyssal key item. It drops with a 100% chance from either of the two Abyssal Commander bosses (PoE2 Wiki):
| Source | Where | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Tasgul, Swallower of Light | Abyssal Depths (Large Abyssal Trove area) | Map / area level 79+ |
| Vandroth, Blackblooded Enslaver | Abyssal Depths (Large Abyssal Trove area) | Map / area level 79+ |
The catch isn't the drop rate — it's getting the boss to spawn. You need an Abyss fissure that opens into the Abyssal Depths and ends in the Large Abyssal Trove guarded by a Commander, and that's RNG layered on level-79+ maps. The clean way to force it: roll the Atlas/map toward Abyss spawns, lean the "Abysses lead to an Abyssal Boss" desecrated map mod, and stack Abyss nodes on your Atlas tree (see our full PoE2 Abyss farming guide for the exact tree and routing).
Don't want to farm the spawn? Kulemak's Invitation is tradeable, and community trade has been pricing it at roughly 15–20 Exalted Orbs early league (conquestcapped Abyss guide) — cheap for what it gates. Always check the live rate on the trade site before you buy; a stockpile of PoE2 Exalted Orbs covers the entry fee plus a few attempts.
Heads-up from r/PathOfExile2: Kulemak's Invitations are stored in your Fragment tab, not the Abyss tab — players regularly think theirs "vanished" when they're just looking in the wrong stash tab. Check the Fragment tab before you panic.
How Do You Enter the Black Cathedral?
Take your Invitation to the Well of Souls and use the prompt at the cliff edge to drop into The Black Cathedral (poe-vault).
One hard rule: the Invitation is consumed the moment you enter. Once you've fallen and clicked the door below, it's gone — there's no refund if you die, leave, or fail the gauntlet. So go in on a build that can actually clear it, with portals/flasks ready. Treat each Invitation like a pinnacle fragment, because that's effectively what it is.
How Does the Vessel of Kulemak Gauntlet Work?
This is the part that makes the encounter unique. The arena is ringed by three petrified Liches, each tied to one of the Abyss's three factions. The loop is: defeat the Vessel → choose a petrified Lich → revive the Vessel (stronger) → repeat. Each Lich you steal from stamps one Desecrated modifier onto a fresh Grip of Kulemak ring, pulled from that faction's pool:
| Petrified Lich | Faction theme | Desecrated mods |
|---|---|---|
| Amanamu, Liege of the Lightless | Defensive | shields, life, body-armour defences |
| Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well | Offensive | weapon/jewellery damage, crit, elemental |
| Kurgal, Blackblooded | Ailments | poison, bleed, ignite |
The ring starts blank and gains a mod each time you steal a Lich's power, accumulating up to 3 modifiers — one per faction (conquestcapped). The key decision: pick the Lich whose mod you actually want, because the roll locks onto the ring. If you're building a defensive ring, prioritise Amanamu; for a damage ring, Ulaman; for an ailment build, Kurgal. Each revival also buffs the boss, so the deeper you go, the harder the fight — that tension between "more mods" and "tougher kill" is the whole encounter.

Take the Finger or Return the Finger? (Full Strength + Abyssal Lich)
After you've rolled your three mods, the encounter gives you a final choice (poe-vault):
- Take the Finger — you exit with the 3-mod Grip of Kulemak ring as-is. Safe, done.
- Return the Finger — you fight the Vessel one more time at Full Strength. Win, and you get the fully-enhanced ring plus the big unlock.
That big unlock: defeating the Vessel at Full Strength while playing a Lich triggers the prompt "Embrace abyssal power?" Accepting unlocks the Abyssal Lich sub-ascendancy — exclusive to Lich-line characters, with nodes including Umbral Well, Unwilling Offering, and Steward of Kulemak (which grants the Abyssal Apparition skill) (poe-vault; Mobalytics: Abyssal Lich). After unlocking it, an urn near the arena lets you freely swap between the normal Lich and the Abyssal Lich ascendancies. If you're not a Lich, you can still run the fight purely for the ring and currency — you just won't get the ascendancy.
What Did 0.5.3 Change for Kulemak?
The 0.5.3 patch (live June 19, 2026) made the Vessel of Kulemak a much better farm target. Straight from the official notes:
"Conquering the Vessel of Kulemak now has a chance to drop Ancient Jawbones, Ancient Ribs and Ancient Collarbones." — PoE2 0.5.3 patch notes
Those Ancient bones are the top tier of Desecrated Currency (item level 75, the highest-rolling bones), and they're tradeable — so the encounter now spits out chase crafting currency on top of the ring (see our PoE2 Desecrated Currency guide for what those bones actually do). The same patch also reworked the ring itself:
"13 new Abyssal Wasting Modifiers were added for the Grip of Kulemak Unique Ring… many of the Grip of Kulemak Desecrated Modifiers have been combined into a single Modifier, increased numerically, or disabled." — PoE2 0.5.3 patch notes
Important detail for anyone who already owns one: existing Grips can be updated with a Divine Orb to receive the new values, but the brand-new modifiers only generate on freshly-obtained rings. If your ring predates 0.5.3 and you want the new numbers, a PoE2 Divine Orb re-rolls it to current values; if you want the new mods, you need a fresh Vessel run.
Is the Vessel of Kulemak Worth Farming?
Short verdict: yes, post-0.5.3 — for two different reasons.
- Build power. The Grip of Kulemak is one of the strongest ring chases in 0.5, and the only way to roll Desecrated mods you choose rather than gamble. Third-party theorycrafters have flagged it as quietly build-defining (u4gm).
- Currency. With Ancient bones now in the loot pool and the Invitation costing only ~15–20 Exalted, a clean run can pay for itself and then some — Ancient bones trade well on the Currency Exchange.
The cost side is real, though: you need level-79+ Abyss farming to even produce Invitations, a build that can survive the Full Strength fight, and patience for the spawn RNG. Live currency values move daily — always price Invitations, bones and rings against poe.ninja and the in-game trade site before you commit.
Want the ring or the Abyssal Lich unlock without grinding 79+ Abyss for hours? Our pros can farm the Invitation, run the gauntlet, and roll the Grip of Kulemak — or clear the Full Strength fight to unlock your Abyssal Lich.

FAQ
Where does Kulemak's Invitation go in my stash? It's stored in the Fragment tab, not the Abyss tab. A lot of players think their Invitations disappeared when they're simply in the wrong tab — check Fragments before assuming a bug.
Can a non-Lich character do the Vessel of Kulemak? Yes. Any class can run the encounter for the Grip of Kulemak ring and the Ancient bone currency. Only the Abyssal Lich sub-ascendancy unlock is locked to Lich-line characters, and only by defeating the Vessel at Full Strength.
What happens if I die or leave during the fight? The Invitation is consumed on entry and is not refunded — if you fail or leave, you lose that Invitation and have to source another. Only enter on a build that can finish the run.
How many Desecrated mods can the Grip of Kulemak get? Up to 3 from the gauntlet — one each from Amanamu (defence), Ulaman (offence) and Kurgal (ailments). You choose which Lich to revive each cycle, so you control which mods land. Beating the boss at Full Strength gives the fully-enhanced version.
Do I have to fight the Full Strength version? No. You can Take the Finger and leave with your 3-mod ring. Return the Finger is optional — it's required only if you want the fully-enhanced ring and (on a Lich) the Abyssal Lich ascendancy.
Where do I use Kulemak's Invitation? At the Well of Souls — use the prompt at the cliff edge to drop into The Black Cathedral, where the Vessel is fought.
