The Lab is the only map in Escape from Tarkov you have to pay to enter — and it's also the only one where a single 25-minute raid can clear a million roubles or leave you with nothing but a mailbox full of "we couldn't recover your insurance." It's TerraGroup's underground weapons-and-research facility: tight corridors, elite Raiders, locked keycard rooms stuffed with GPUs and LEDX, and extracts you often have to activate before you can use them. This guide covers exactly how Labs works in patch 1.0.6.5 — how to get in, which keycard rooms actually pay, how to survive the Raiders, every extract, and how many roubles a clean run really nets.
Quick answer: You enter The Lab with a single-use TerraGroup Labs access keycard (buy it from Therapist for roughly 166,000 roubles, or find/barter one). It's consumed on entry and insurance does not work here — anything you leave in a dead raid is gone for good. Inside, the money is in the keycard loot rooms (arsenal, weapon-test, violet/black keycard rooms) plus GPU, LEDX and defibrillator spawns; a good run nets ~800k–1.5M+ roubles. There are seven extracts, but only Ventilation Shaft and Sewage Conduit are silent — the other five broadcast your location when activated. Bring a mid-tier expendable kit, learn one loot loop, and leave early. ⚠️ Right now (1.0.6.5) the Blackout event temporarily overrides normal Labs rules — darkness, one master door code, the Black Division instead of Raiders, and a 25-minute timer. The base mechanics below return when Blackout ends.

Is The Lab worth running in 1.0.6.5?
Short version: yes, if you can absorb the entry cost — and right now, more than ever, because the Blackout event has turned it into the best loot window in the game. The Lab has the highest loot density of any location: it's the primary source for graphics cards, LEDX Skin Transilluminators, ophthalmoscopes, defibrillators and multiple keycard-locked arsenals. The catch is the cost of admission and the no-insurance rule — every raid you either extract with your haul or you eat the full loss of your kit and the keycard.
The math is simple. Keycard ≈ 166,000₽. A cheap-but-viable kit ≈ 150,000–250,000₽. So you're risking roughly 300,000–400,000 roubles to walk in the door. A single loaded GPU-and-arsenal run repays that several times over — but a death before you extract wipes it. That's the entire Labs gamble in one sentence.
Season 1 "Kord Breach" note: on a seasonal character, the No Flea Market modifier means you can't just buy the keycard off the flea — you have to find it in raid, barter for it, or fund the Therapist purchase with raw roubles. If you're on a fresh seasonal profile and short on cash for both the card and a kit, that's exactly when players top up their balance rather than grind Ground Zero for a week. See our Season 1 leveling guide for how to bankroll it fast.
How to get into The Lab: the keycard, explained
Everything on Labs starts with one item. As the official wiki puts it:
"This location can only be entered with a TerraGroup Labs access keycard. All insured items left in a raid by players will not be returned."
— Escape from Tarkov Wiki, The Lab
Where to get the TerraGroup Labs access keycard
You have three realistic routes:
- Buy from Therapist — the safest, most reliable option at around 166,000 roubles once you've unlocked her at the required loyalty level. This is the default for most players. It's a single-use card: it's consumed the moment you load into a live Labs raid (it is not consumed in the practice/offline modes, so you can scout for free).
- Find it in raid — the keycard spawns as loose loot and in the Cultist Circle rewards pool. On a seasonal character with No Flea, raid-found or Cultist Circle cards are your main supply line.
- Barter / player trade — trade an item of comparable value for one when the flea is available.
Because the card is burned every single raid, your real hourly cost on Labs is the keycard plus whatever kit you lose. Treat both as a running tax on the loot, not a one-time buy.
The best loot in The Lab (what actually pays)
Labs loot falls into two buckets: free-roam spawns you grab on the way through, and keycard rooms you unlock for the big hauls.
Free-roam high-value spawns
| Item | Typical value | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics card (GPU) | 300k–500k₽ | Server rooms, tech benches, PC spawns |
| LEDX Skin Transilluminator | 500k–900k₽ | Medical spawns, med bags, drawers |
| Ophthalmoscope | 150k–250k₽ | Medical block, med spawns |
| Defibrillator | 130k–200k₽ | Medical block, tech rooms |
| Weapon spawns (M4/HK/meta guns) | 100k–400k₽ | Weapon-test area, lecture hall, armory |
Even a "bad" Labs run where you never open a locked door can pay for itself off two GPU spawns and a LEDX.
Keycard rooms (the real money)
The locked arsenals and testing rooms are where Labs earns its reputation. These require their own colored keycards (violet, black, red, etc.), each a separate single-use item, and they hold stacked weapon crates, tech, and multiple high-tier medical/electronic spawns. A cleared arsenal room can single-handedly turn a raid into 1M+ roubles. The trade-off: they're the most-camped rooms on the map, so you're fighting both Raiders and other players to reach them.
⚠️ During the current Blackout event (1.0.6.5): you don't juggle a fistful of colored keycards. Instead you kill the Black Division for the Labs arsenal storage room key, grab a single 4-digit code from the system admin's office, and that one code opens every keypad in The Lab — including the rooms that normally cost millions in keycards. Full walkthrough in the Blackout event guide. When Blackout ends, the per-room colored-keycard system returns.
How do you survive the Raiders in Labs?
Labs isn't guarded by normal Scavs — it's patrolled by Raiders: elite AI wearing USEC/BEAR-grade gear, using meta weapons, with sharp accuracy and aggressive push behavior. A handful of hard truths:
- They pre-aim and headshot. Peeking a Raider in the open at range usually loses. Fight them in doorways and corners where only one can engage you at a time.
- They hunt sound. Sprinting, unsuppressed shots and opening loud doors pull them to you. A suppressor and slow movement are worth more than extra ammo.
- They drop great loot. Killing Raiders is itself a payday — armor, weapons, meds and rigs — so a defensive kill isn't wasted.
- Armor matters more than on any other map. Class 5–6 plates and a good helmet change every Raider fight. See our armor tier list for the best value plates to wear in here.
The winning mindset is greedy-but-fast: pick one loot loop, take the fights you're forced into, and don't wander looking for a third GPU while the timer bleeds.
⚠️ Blackout override: during the event the Raiders are replaced by The Wedge and his Black Division squad, the whole map goes dark a few minutes in, and they throw (and drop) CS gas grenades. Bring night vision or thermal — it is not optional during Blackout.
Every Lab extract (and the two silent ones)
The Lab has seven extraction points, and most of them must be activated before you can leave — pulling a lever, hitting a button, or restoring power. Crucially, activating an extract triggers a map-wide announcement that broadcasts your position — with two exceptions.
| Extract | Type | Prep required | Announces you? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ventilation Shaft | Crawl-out | None | No — silent |
| Sewage Conduit | Free exit | None | No — silent |
| Parking Gate | Gate | Press the button to open | Yes |
| Main Elevator | Elevator | Pull the lever / restore power | Yes |
| Medical Block Elevator | Elevator | Activate the elevator | Yes |
| Cargo Elevator | Elevator | Restore power (slow) | Yes |
| Hangar Gate | Gate | Open the gate | Yes |
The rule of thumb: plan your exit before you loot. If you're carrying a big haul, favor Ventilation Shaft or Sewage Conduit so you don't ring the dinner bell for every player left on the map. As the wiki notes, "there is an announcement for every extraction activation besides Ventilation Shaft and Sewage Conduit."
⚠️ Blackout override: during the event only Parking Gate and Hangar Gate work, both must be activated from the system admin's office, and you cannot transit out — the raid timer is cut to 25 minutes.

How many roubles is a Labs run worth?
Here's a realistic per-raid expectation for the base (non-event) map in 1.0.6.5:
| Run type | Net roubles (after entry cost) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Death before extract | −300k to −400k₽ | Keycard + kit lost, no insurance |
| Survive, light loot | +200k–500k₽ | A couple of GPU/med spawns |
| Survive, good loot loop | +800k–1.5M₽ | GPU + LEDX + weapon spawns |
| Survive + cleared arsenal | +1.5M–3M₽ | Best-case keycard-room run |
Two hard stats to anchor expectations: the keycard alone costs ~166,000₽ every raid, and a single LEDX can be worth 500k–900k₽ — which is why one medical spawn can flip an entire run from break-even to jackpot. Over a session, Labs is high-variance: a few blank raids in a row, then one run that pays for the week. Bankroll it like that.
Labs run plan (fastest safe loop)
- Kit for the fight, not the flex. Class 5–6 armor, a suppressed meta rifle, a couple of stims and a med kit. Don't bring a 700k₽ kit you can't afford to lose.
- Pick ONE loot loop before you load in — e.g. medical block → nearest weapon spawn → arsenal → silent extract.
- Move slow, listen more than you shoot. Raiders come to sound.
- Grab the guaranteed value first (GPUs, meds), then decide if you have time and safety for a keycard room.
- Leave through Ventilation Shaft or Sewage Conduit if you're loaded — no announcement, no ambush.
- Extract early. A 700k run in your pocket beats a 1.5M run you died carrying.
Fund your Labs runs
Labs is a roubles game — the keycard, the kits, the extra keycards for arsenal rooms all cost cash before you see a single GPU. If you're on a fresh Season 1 character with No Flea Market, that entry cost is the wall most players hit.
Skip the Ground Zero grind and get straight to the loot:
- Tarkov Roubles — instant delivery — safe, best rate, fast. Bankroll your keycards and kits so a bad run never benches you.
- Tarkov Quest & Kappa Boost — clear the Labs-gated tasks and Collector items without the keycard tax.
- Tarkov Leveling Boost — power past the loyalty gates to unlock Therapist's keycard and better traders.
- All Escape from Tarkov services — carries, currency and boosts in one place.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get into The Lab in Escape from Tarkov? You need a TerraGroup Labs access keycard. Buy it from Therapist for roughly 166,000 roubles, or find/barter one. It's single-use and consumed the moment you enter a live Labs raid (not consumed in practice/offline mode).
Does insurance work on Labs? No. Insured items left behind in a Labs raid are not returned — the traders explicitly say their people won't go there. Never bring gear into Labs you aren't willing to lose outright.
What's the best loot in The Lab? The highest-value spawns are graphics cards (GPUs), LEDX Skin Transilluminators, ophthalmoscopes, defibrillators and the keycard-locked arsenal/weapon-test rooms. A single LEDX can be worth 500k–900k roubles.
How many extracts does Labs have, and which are safe? There are seven extracts. Five trigger a map-wide announcement that reveals your position when activated; only Ventilation Shaft and Sewage Conduit are silent, so use those when you're carrying a big haul.
Is The Lab different right now because of the Blackout event? Yes. In patch 1.0.6.5 the Blackout event temporarily replaces normal Labs rules with darkness, the Black Division instead of Raiders, a single master door code, and a 25-minute timer. Bring night vision. The base mechanics in this guide return when Blackout ends.
How much money can you make per Labs raid? After paying the ~166k keycard, a surviving run typically nets 200k–500k roubles on light loot, 800k–1.5M on a good loop, and 1.5M–3M if you clear an arsenal room. Deaths cost you 300k–400k, so Labs is high-variance — bankroll it for the swings.
