Valheim Comfort Guide 2026: Max Comfort, Every Item & Rested Time (1.0.21)

Applies to Valheim 1.0, patch 1.0.21 (released on Steam October 28, 2026; Iron Gate said other platforms follow within a few days). Comfort values and item recipes come from the community Valheim Wiki, which tracks 1.0. Iron Gate doesn't publish these tables, so treat them as wiki figures, current as of October 31, 2026.

Comfort is one number that decides how long your best passive buff lasts in Valheim. Every point adds a minute of Rested, and Rested doubles your stamina regen. Yet plenty of guides still tell you the cap is 17. It isn't. The cap in 1.0 is 22, and the items that get you there run all the way through to the Ashlands.

This guide covers the exact formula, every comfort item with its value, the best room for each stage of the game, and why your number sometimes refuses to go up. It also has one time-limited trick: until November 6 you can build a 2-comfort light from turnips.

Quick answer: Valheim comfort in 60 seconds

  • Max comfort is 22 with normal items, giving 29 minutes of Rested.
  • Seasonal pieces go further. A Maypole and a Yule Tree add +1 each, for 24 comfort and 31 minutes.
  • The formula: Rested minutes = 7 + comfort. Comfort 16 gives 23:00, as the screenshot above shows.
  • Only the best item in each category counts. Two rugs don't stack.
  • Items count within 10 m of you. A Hearth needs you within 8 m for its extra point.
  • Shelter matters most. Without a roof you're capped at comfort 1, whatever you've built.
  • Rested gives +50% health regen, +100% stamina regen, +100% Eitr regen and +50% skill XP.
  • The Comfort is King achievement needs comfort 20.

What does comfort do in Valheim?

Comfort sets the length of the Rested buff, and nothing else. It doesn't raise your health or stamina directly.

The chain works in three steps:

  • Fire + Shelter = Resting. Stand under a roof near a fire, or sit beside a fire, with no enemies nearby. You must not be Wet, Burning, Freezing or Poisoned.
  • 20 seconds of Resting = Rested. Moving out of range or letting the fire die restarts the wait.
  • Comfort = duration. The Resting page gives the rule: Rested lasts 7 minutes longer than your comfort level.

Your current comfort appears as Comfort: X under the Resting icon, top right of the HUD. Check that number after every new piece you place. It's the only feedback the game gives you.

BuffHealth regenStamina regenEitr regenSkill XP
Resting (at the fire)+200%+300%+300%None
Rested (carries with you)+50%+100%+100%+50%

Rested is removed when you log out, so it never carries into a new session. Build one good room where you start each play session.

How is max comfort 22 made up?

There are 11 categories plus the shelter bonus. Take the best item from each and you land exactly on 22:

CategoryBest itemComfortNote
Shelter near fireRoof + any fire2Needs 80% cover
FireHearth2Campfire and braziers give 1
ChairAny throne3Highest single category
BedDragon Bed2Regular Bed gives 1
TableRound, Long Heavy or Long Carved Table2Basic Table gives 1
RugBearskin, Wolf, Lox Rug or Moose Hide Carpet2Deer Rug and Sealskin Rug give 1
BannerJute Curtain or Blue Jute Drapes2Banners give 1 and don't stack with curtains
BathroomHeated Hot Tub2Barber Station gives 1
LightsLava Lantern or Snow Lantern2Dvergr lanterns give 1
PlantsFey Lights or Flower Garland1Mistletoe and Yule pieces also count here
StandsArmor Stand or Item Stand1Doesn't need an item on it
AshlandsAny green pot or Asksvin Skeleton1Needs Ashlands materials
Total2229 minutes of Rested

The Maypole and Yule Tree sit outside every category, so they stack with all of the above and with each other. That's where 23 and 24 come from.

What can you reach in each biome?

Biomes don't change comfort directly. They decide which items you can build. These are the wiki's per-biome maximums, excluding seasonal pieces:

StageMax comfortRestedKey addition
Meadows512 minCampfire, Bed, Deer Rug
Black Forest1320 minChair, Table, Bearskin Rug, Banner, Barber Station
Swamp1522 minHearth, any throne
Mountain1724 minDragon Bed, Red Jute Curtain
Plains1926 minRound Table, Hot Tub
Mistlands2027 minDvergr lantern
Ashlands2229 minLava Lantern, green pot
Deep North2229 minSnow Lantern, Moose Hide Carpet, Long Carved Table

The jump from Meadows to the Black Forest is the best value in the game: 8 extra minutes, mostly from cheap Finewood furniture. The late game adds only 3 minutes from the Plains onward. If you're short on Flametal, the Lava Lantern can wait.

What do the key comfort items cost?

ItemComfortMaterials
Chair24 Finewood
Raven Throne320 Finewood, 10 Iron Nails
Hearth215 Stone (needs a Stonecutter nearby)
Dragon Bed240 Finewood, 7 Deer Hide, 4 Wolf Pelt, 10 Feathers, 15 Iron Nails
Round Table210 Finewood, 2 Tar, 20 Iron Nails
Wolf Rug24 Wolf Pelt
Red Jute Curtain24 Red Jute, 1 Finewood
Hot Tub220 Wood, 6 Tar, 10 Iron, 8 Stone
Lava Lantern21 Flametal, 1 Proustite Powder, 1 Sulfur
Snow Lantern28 Snowballs
Flower Garland12 Finewood, 1 Dandelion
Item Stand14 Finewood, 1 Bronze Nails

The Chair is the sleeper pick. Four Finewood gets you 2 comfort from the Black Forest onward, only 1 short of a throne.

Why is my comfort stuck at 1?

This is the most common comfort complaint, and the fix is almost always the roof. If you're sitting by a fire without Shelter, every other source is ignored and comfort is capped at 1.

A Valheim player resting beside a lit Forge inside a Dvergr ruin, with the HUD showing Comfort 1 and no Shelter effect

The shot above is from an r/valheim post titled "TIL forge fires are actual fires". The Forge counts as a fire while you use it, so you can rest next to one. The HUD shows Fire and Resting but no Shelter, so it reads Comfort: 1.

Work through this list if your number looks low:

  • No Shelter icon? You need a roof with 80% cover. Holes in a roof count against it.
  • Hearth only giving 1? Stand within 8 m of it. Past that range it behaves like a campfire.
  • Items not counting? Everything must be within 10 m of you. The wiki measures some pieces from unusual points, such as the top of a Hanging Brazier.
  • Hot Tub not counting? It only counts when fuelled with Wood.
  • Fire out? Fire items give comfort only while lit. A Hearth also dies in rain without a roof and in strong wind without 70% cover.
  • Lots of furniture, low score? Check for doubles. A Bearskin Rug plus a Wolf Rug is still 2.

Which fire should you use, and how far does it reach?

Fire does two jobs: it gives comfort and it triggers Resting. Those jobs have different ranges, which trips up anyone building a big hall. These are the Fire effect ranges:

Fire sourceFire effect rangeComfort
Standing Brazier5 m1
Campfire, Iron Fire Pit8 m1
Hanging Brazier9 m (if under 7 m above you)1
Hearth12 m2 within 8 m
Bonfire12 to 15 m1

Build the Hearth with care. It has to sit on the ground, stone flooring or a strongly supported floor. On an unsupported wooden floor it breaks as soon as you place it.

Smelters, Charcoal Kilns, Blast Furnaces and Stone Ovens also count as fire while they're running, as do the Forge and Black Forge while you use them. That's handy when you want to top up at a work station without walking to the main room.

What's the best compact comfort room?

Put everything inside one 10 m circle. A long hall spreads your points out and quietly costs you comfort.

  • Place the Hearth first, on stone or solid ground, in the centre of the room.
  • Put your throne within 8 m of it. That's where you'll sit and check the number.
  • Lay the rug beside the throne, then add the table and bed.
  • Hang a curtain on the nearest wall.
  • Add one Item Stand and one Flower Garland. They cost almost nothing.
  • Vent the smoke. A Hearth and a Hot Tub both produce it, so leave a gap in your roofline. Our building guide covers smoke and structural support.

The Hot Tub has a useful quirk: it's the one place you can gain Rested while Wet, so it's the perfect stop after a rainy trip. Don't soak in one in the Ashlands, though. The wiki warns that a fuelled tub there eventually kills you, the same way Ashlands water does.

How do you get Rested in a dungeon or on the road?

You don't need a finished base. A Campfire costs 5 Stone and 2 Wood, and any roofed space works. Inside most dungeons, such as Burial Chambers, you're already sheltered. Light a campfire near the entrance and you get comfort 3 and a 10-minute Rested (shelter 2 + campfire 1).

Outdoors with no roof, sit beside a campfire for comfort 1 and 8 minutes of Rested. Press X to sit on PC. It's a poor buff but a free one, as long as the weather lets the fire burn. Before a boss, the better move is to rest in a small roofed hut near the altar. For fight prep, pair it with our food tier list.

Which seasonal items add comfort, and when?

Seasonal pieces stay in your world after the event ends. Once destroyed, you can't rebuild them until the window returns.

ItemComfortBuild windowMaterials
Jack-O-Turnip2 (Lights)Oct 1 to Nov 64 Turnip, 2 Resin
Yule Tree+1, stacksDec 1 to Jan 610 Wood, 1 Fir Cone
Maypole+1, stacksJun 1 to Jul 610 Wood, 4 Dandelion, 4 Thistle

The Jack-O-Turnip is live right now. It matches the Lava Lantern's 2 comfort and needs no Ashlands materials. The wiki says the recipe should unlock when you pick up a turnip. On the wiki's numbers, it should lift a Mountain room from 17 to 19 and a Plains room from 19 to 21. That's our own arithmetic, since the wiki's biome table leaves seasonal pieces out. Build it by November 6 and keep it safe, because a broken one can't be replaced until next October.

A Maypole can also be found rarely in Meadows Abandoned Villages, which is the only way to use one outside its window. It won't move with you, though.

How do you get the Comfort is King achievement?

The achievement needs a comfort level of 20. Normal progression gets you there in the Mistlands, or in the Plains with a Jack-O-Turnip while the Halloween window lasts. Iron Gate fixed it in patch 1.0.21, which reads:

"Fixed a bug where some achievements were incorrectly tied to the current difficulty level - Mighty Halls, Comfort is King, The Homesteader, The Architect, and The Survivor."

If your difficulty setting blocked it before, try again on 1.0.21. Console players should wait for the patch to reach their platform first.

FAQ

What is the max comfort level in Valheim 1.0? 22 with normal items, which gives 29 minutes of Rested. A Maypole and a Yule Tree add 1 each, for 24 comfort and 31 minutes. Older guides that stop at 17 are out of date.

How long does Rested last in Valheim? 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level. Comfort 1 gives 8 minutes, comfort 13 gives 20, and comfort 22 gives 29.

Do multiple comfort items stack in Valheim? Only across categories. A rug and a chair stack, but two rugs don't, and neither do a banner and a curtain. Only the highest item per category counts. The Maypole and Yule Tree are the exceptions, since they have no category.

How do you check your comfort level? Get the Resting effect, then read Comfort: X under its icon at the top right of the screen. It only appears while you're Resting.

Do you need a bed for comfort? No, but a Bed adds 1 and a Dragon Bed adds 2. Sleeping isn't part of the system at all. Resting by a fire under a roof for 20 seconds gives you Rested.

How far do comfort items reach in Valheim? 10 metres from your character. The Hearth's second point needs you within 8 metres, so sit close to it.
