WoW Forever Pre-Install: Fix the Greyed-Out Install Button Before Nov 4

Quick answer: WoW Forever's client can already be downloaded through Battle.net > World of Warcraft > Game Version > World of Warcraft: Forever > Install, but Blizzard hasn't announced a pre-download date for players without a pack. If Install is greyed out and says "This game cannot be installed yet", check the WoW account dropdown first, then your Battle.net region, then the layout toggle. Players who still can't get it report success with the launcher command --game=WoWF --install. Blizzard asks for 128 GB of free SSD space; players report about 49 GB on a clean install and about 12 GB if another WoW version is already installed. Installing does not let you play before November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST.

Updated November 1, 2026, with Blizzard's latest install steps and player reports from the last ten days. The launcher's behaviour may change before launch.

The beta is closed, reservations end on November 3, and launch is three days away. So the question filling the forums has moved from "what should I roll?" to "why won't Battle.net let me download this?" Blizzard's forums alone have more than a dozen fresh threads on it, and the answers contradict each other because different people are hitting different blocks.

Here's the order to work through them, with a clear line between what Blizzard has said and what players have found.

Can you pre-install WoW Forever right now?

It depends on what's on your account. Blizzard has published the install steps, but only inside its reservation and returning-player articles. It has never posted a pre-load date for everyone.

Your situationCan you install today?Source
Heroic Pack, Epic Pack, Collection or redeemed Collector's Edition, on the selected accountYes, this is the supported routeBlizzard

No subscription and no packLauncher usually blocks it; the command below has worked for somePlayers

What the launcher shows also varies. Some subscription-only players read a greyed-out button with a November 4 notice, while others with the same setup have an active Install. One Blizzard forum thread on pre-loading has both reports within a day of each other, and nobody from Blizzard has answered it.

Without an official rule, treat a greyed-out button as normal if you own no pack. It doesn't mean your account is broken. If you bought a pack and it's greyed out, something is wrong and the fixes below apply.

How do you install WoW Forever the official way?

Blizzard's Return to Azeroth guide gives the supported route, and it's the one to try first:

  • Update your operating system and graphics drivers.
  • Install the Battle.net desktop app, log in and let it update.
  • Select World of Warcraft from your game list.
  • In the Game Version menu, choose WoW: Forever.
  • If you have more than one WoW account, pick the right one in the second column.
  • Click Install.

Forever isn't a separate tile in your library, and that catches returning players out. It sits in the same dropdown as Retail and the Classic versions. Blizzard's wording on the account step is worth reading closely:

"You'll see a second dropdown for each account if you have more than one World of Warcraft account. Select the active account you wish to play on from that column." (Blizzard, Return to Azeroth in World of Warcraft: Forever)

Why does WoW Forever say "This game cannot be installed yet"?

Most reports trace back to one of five causes. Try them in this order, because the first two take seconds and Blizzard backs them.

1. The wrong WoW account is selected. This is the most repeated fix on the forums. Blizzard's reservation article says the upgrade "only applies to the specific WoW account it was purchased for". The launcher can land on WoW1, or on an old trial license, when your pack sits on WoW2. Players in this thread found the button lit up the moment they switched.

2. Battle.net is logged in to the wrong region. This one comes from Blizzard's own support staff. Yryadorne told EU players to click their BattleTag to see the region. If it's wrong, log out and use the cogwheel on the login screen to change it. Several European players had been left on Americas after the beta.

3. The layout is hiding the button. Players report that switching the Battle.net layout brings Install back. The direction conflicts: one r/classicwow thread says move to the new layout, while a player on the EU forum says the legacy view did it. Try whichever you aren't on. It costs nothing.

4. Your Collector's Edition code isn't redeemed. A physical box doesn't reach your account until you enter its code, according to players who hit this. Redeem it at Battle.net, then reopen the app.

5. You bought on the wrong account or region. This is the one with no quick fix. Yryadorne's answer on wrong purchases is direct:

"If you purchase the wrong game, or purchase a game on the wrong account, you will need to request a refund for this: we're unable to change the license for a game, or move it from one account to another." (Yryadorne, Blizzard forums, October 28, 2026)

Check your purchase history before you request one. Yryadorne adds that a refund generally takes a few days to a week, so if time matters it may be best to buy again on the correct account while you wait. Blizzard also deactivates friend codes on a refunded order, so read our Invite-A-Friend guide first if you've already sent any.

Does the Battle.net install command work?

For many players, yes, but it's a player workaround. Blizzard hasn't documented it for Forever. It tells your own Battle.net app to start the install for Forever's product code, WoWF, and players say the same trick worked for the beta.

On Windows, open Command Prompt and paste this, changing the path if Battle.net lives elsewhere:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Battle.net\Battle.net.exe" --game=WoWF --install

In PowerShell, put an ampersand (&) and a space in front of that same line.

A Mac version is circulating too: /Applications/Battle.net.app/Contents/MacOS/Battle.net --game=WoWF --install. The fan site that published it says it hasn't run these commands on a blocked account, so treat the Mac line as the least proven.

Here's the track record so far:

  • It installed the live client for the player who first posted it for Forever, who says it also works without a subscription, beta access or the Stress Test.
  • A subscriber with no pack and a lapsed player both report it working in r/wowforever and r/classicwow threads.
  • On November 1 a Windows player on the EU forum said it was the only thing that worked after every other fix failed.
  • At least one r/wowforever player ran it and saw nothing happen.

The catch: it gets files onto your drive and nothing else. One player on that same EU thread downloaded the game this way and then hit a "no valid license" message at login. If you own a pack and see that, the problem is the account or region, not the install. Fix that instead.

How big is the WoW Forever download?

Blizzard hasn't published a Forever download size. Its only official figure is the 128 GB of free SSD space on the shop listing, and a Customer Support poster on the forum pointed to that number while saying they didn't know if it's exact. On October 1 Blizzard's beta notes also said the total install was "larger than intended" and that it was working on reducing it.

Player numbers vary because WoW versions share one data folder:

Starting pointReported downloadSource
Clean PC, no WoW installedAbout 49 to 50 GBForum reports
Another WoW version already installedAbout 12 GBForum report, Icy Veins
Beta data still in the same WoW folderAbout 250 MBForum report
Blizzard's requirement128 GB free SSDBlizzard shop listing

Two practical points follow. Keep the 128 GB free anyway, because a report isn't a spec and launch updates still have to land. And install into the same World of Warcraft folder as your other versions, or you'll re-download data you already have. If you're on a capped connection, that choice is the difference between roughly 12 GB and 50 GB. Blizzard publishes no figure for daily data use.

Should you delete the beta client first?

Don't delete anything until the live client is installed. A player on the pre-install thread pointed out that the launcher can reuse data already on disk, and another saw only about 250 MB arrive when installing beside the beta. After that, the old _classic_beta_ folder is safe to clear once you've backed up what you want.

That backup matters if you built a UI in beta. The live client uses a _forever_ folder, and our addons migration guide covers what to copy across and in what order.

What if your PC fails the requirements check?

One r/wowforever player on Windows 11 reports a dialog saying they don't meet the minimum requirements, even though Forever's minimum is Windows 10 and their Radeon RX 6750 XT and six-core CPU clear it. As of November 1 that thread has no fix and no staff reply, so it's a single report and not a known bug.

Blizzard's minimums are a 64-bit Windows 10 install, a 4-core CPU, a 4 GB DirectX 12 GPU, 8 GB of RAM and an SSD. Older GPUs are blocked outright, so read our system requirements breakdown if you're close to the line. Update your OS and drivers before anything else, which is also Blizzard's first install step. If the dialog still appears, open a Blizzard Support ticket now, not on launch night.

What if you can't install until November 4?

You'd lose less than the forums suggest. Blizzard's guide says "The progress bar will show you when the game is available to play", which is how Battle.net normally works: the game can become playable before the bar hits 100%. A player on the EU pre-install thread recalls playing the beta at about 1% installed. That's one memory of the beta, not a promise for launch night, so don't plan your evening around it.

You can still prepare without the client:

  • Confirm your subscription or Game Time is active on the right WoW account.
  • Clear 128 GB on your SSD and update your drivers.
  • In Battle.net settings, allow downloads while you play a game, so an open Retail client doesn't pause it. One player had to close Retail to start.
  • Turn on automatic updates for WoW. One player who pre-installed says the launcher patched their client on its own on October 30.
  • Pick your ruleset and character plan using our launch day checklist.

Blizzard's WoW Forever global release times map for November 4 and November 5, 2026

Launch is November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST, or 23:00 UTC, per Blizzard's global launch post. Our launch time guide has every time zone.

Does pre-installing give you anything early?

No. It saves you a download and nothing else. Nobody can play Forever before launch, and installing doesn't reserve a name. Early Name Reservation runs through November 3 and needs a Digital Upgrade or Collector's Edition on that account, which you can read about in our reservation guide.

If you're on a pack and did reserve names, those characters are waiting at level 1. If you're subscription-only, a client on your drive simply means you can log in with no download wait once servers open. Queues are another matter, and our server status page will track what's actually reported around launch.

FAQ

Do I need to buy a pack to pre-install WoW Forever? Blizzard's supported early route was written for pack and Collector's Edition owners, and no separate pre-download has been announced. Some subscribers without a pack see Install anyway, and others have used the launcher command. To play on November 4 you only need a subscription or Game Time.

Why does Battle.net say Available November 4? Players with no pack report that notice on a greyed-out button. If you own a pack and see it, check the WoW account dropdown and your Battle.net region first.

Is the --game=WoWF command safe? It only asks your own Battle.net app to start an install, and players report no harm from it, but Blizzard hasn't documented it for Forever. Paste it into your own terminal yourself, and never run a file someone sends you instead.

How much space does WoW Forever take? Blizzard lists 128 GB of free SSD space. Players report downloading about 49 GB on a clean PC and about 12 GB with another WoW version installed. No final size has been published.

Can I play WoW Forever on a hard drive? Blizzard's requirements call for an SSD at both minimum and recommended, so plan on one. See the system requirements guide.

Will my Classic Era gold or characters come with the install? No. The install only adds the client, and Blizzard hasn't said gold or characters move into Forever. Our carry-over explainer covers the older Classic+ question.
