WoW Forever Skyborne Starting Zone: Zephras Isle 1-12 Guide (Beta)

The Skyborne are the first brand-new race added to Classic-line WoW in over a decade, and in the World of Warcraft: Forever beta they start on a floating island nobody has leveled on before: Zephras Isle, a level 1-12 starting zone. If you booted a Skyborne during the beta and immediately hit three questions — which faction am I, which classes can I actually play, and is this zone worth doing before I jump to the mainland — this guide answers all three against Blizzard's own source, plus what the October 1 level-30 build changed for Skyborne levelers.

Quick answer: what is Zephras Isle in WoW Forever?

Zephras Isle is the Skyborne race's level 1-12 starting zone in World of Warcraft: Forever — a new sky-bound island inspired by Skywall, playable from beta week one. You pick Horde or Alliance at character creation (the choice is permanent), and your faction decides whether you unlock Shaman (Horde) or Mage (Alliance). Both factions share Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid, with Skyborne-only druid forms. The isle is self-contained: you can leave early, but its questline is the only place to see the Skyborne story, racials and starting gear.

TL;DR

- Zone: Zephras Isle — new level 1-12 Skyborne starting experience.

- Faction: choose Horde (Windshaper) or Alliance (High Order) at creation; it's permanent.

- Classes: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid both sides; Shaman = Horde only, Mage = Alliance only.

- Racials: Walk on Air, Wind Blessed (+1% Haste), Elemental Insight (+5% vs Elementals); plus Skysight (Horde) or Read Ley Line (Alliance).

- Beta status: live since Sep 17; the Oct 1 build raised the beta cap to level 30, so you can now take a Skyborne off the isle and into the mainland zones.

- Launch: November 4, 2026. Everyone starts fresh at level 1.

What is the Skyborne race?

The Skyborne — also called the shen'dorei, or "hidden people" — are a new race of wind-touched elves. Per Blizzard's September 22 overview: "Thousands of years ago, a group of Highborne exiles forged a pact with elemental wind spirits and built a civilization within Skywall—one of the elemental planes." When you arrive, that civilization is collapsing: the air spirits that anchored the island have vanished, ancient structures are failing, and the Skyborne are split over what to do next.

That split is the whole hook of the starting zone and it maps directly onto your faction choice:

  • Windshaper Skyborne (Horde) — descendants of the first shen'dorei to receive the wind spirits' gift of elemental skysight. They want the wind spirits restored and their old way of life preserved.
  • High Order Skyborne (Alliance) — descendants of the Highborne scholars of Eldre'Thalas. They concluded that dependence on elemental patrons left the Skyborne vulnerable, and set out to reclaim lost arcane knowledge and become self-reliant.

This is unusual for WoW: the Skyborne are not a neutral race you play faction-free. You commit to Horde or Alliance at level 1 on the isle, and it's locked for that character.

Which classes can the Skyborne play?

WoW Forever Skyborne race showcase with class icons and faction restrictions

Your class pool depends on the faction you pick. Here is the exact split from Blizzard's own Skyborne "Quick Facts":

ClassHorde Skyborne (Windshaper)Alliance Skyborne (High Order)
Warrior✅✅
Hunter✅✅
Rogue✅✅
Druid✅ (new Skyborne forms)✅ (new Skyborne forms)
Shaman✅❌
Mage❌✅
Paladin / Priest / Warlock❌❌

Two things worth calling out. First, Shaman and Mage are mutually exclusive — if you want a Skyborne Shaman you must go Horde; a Skyborne Mage must go Alliance. Second, Skyborne Druids get shapeshift forms built specifically for the race. Because Forever is a Classic-line game frozen at level 60, the huge library of druid forms added in later expansions does not apply here — the Skyborne forms are the new art you're actually unlocking.

WoW Forever Skyborne racial abilities

Every race in Forever has two active and two passive racials. Three of the Skyborne's four are shared across both factions; the second active differs by faction. Straight from Blizzard:

Shared by both factions:

  • Walk on Air (active) — glide downward through the air for 10 seconds.
  • Wind Blessed (passive) — 1% increased melee, ranged and spellcasting Haste.
  • Elemental Insight (passive) — damage to Elementals increased by 5%.

Faction-specific active:

  • Skysight — Horde (Windshaper) only: receive an Elemental Blessing increasing run speed by 10%.
  • Read Ley Line — Alliance (High Order) only: activate a ley line to gain 100% increased Health and Mana regeneration.

A flat 1% Haste passive is a genuinely strong all-class racial in a Vanilla-era sandbox where Haste is scarce, and the +5% damage to Elementals is situationally excellent against the many elemental mobs in Classic zones. Blizzard lists no cooldowns in the overview and only gives a duration for Walk on Air, and notes beta values can change before launch — so treat the numbers as current-beta, not final. The race's mounts are Galestriders, unlocked at level 40 and level 60.

Is Zephras Isle worth doing, or should you skip ahead?

Short version: do the isle at least once. It's the only place the Skyborne's story, voice lines, dance and starting gear live, and at 1-12 it's quick. Designers have indicated Skyborne can leave the island before level 12 if you'd rather funnel straight into the fast mainland zones, so on alts you can short-circuit it — but on your first Skyborne the questline is the point.

Zephras Isle waterfront vista in WoW Forever — floating towers and elemental architecture

Community beta reports describe a roughly U-shaped route through the isle — villages, shrines, ruins and forests — with the signature Skyborne visual language of floating towers, elemental architecture and pink-tinted forests. Treat specific quest-by-quest routes you see floating around as beta observations, not gospel: as of early October no fully verified 1-12 Skyborne route has been locked down, and Blizzard has stated the build is still changing.

Access caveat worth knowing before you roll one: multiple beta guides report that the Zephras Isle questline (and the Skyborne race itself) requires at least the Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99) or a higher edition — the race is the headline item those packs sell. Blizzard has not published a free-with-subscription path to the Skyborne specifically, so if you want to play one, budget for a pack. (See our breakdown of whether the Skyborne race is worth $29.99 and what WoW Forever actually costs.)

What the October 1 beta build changed for Skyborne levelers

On October 1, 2026, Blizzard took the beta offline for maintenance and brought it back with an updated build that raised the level cap from 20 to 30. In the official beta forum post, Blizzard wrote that the beta would "resume with an updated build that includes changes and fixes, with the level cap raised to 30."

For a Skyborne that matters a lot: Zephras Isle caps out at level 12, so before October 1 you only had a narrow band of mainland leveling to test after leaving the isle. At the new level-30 cap you can take a Skyborne off Zephras Isle and into the early-to-mid Classic zones (for Horde Skyborne, the Barrens-into-Stonetalon/Ashenvale band; for Alliance, the comparable 12-30 progression), which is where the race's racials and druid forms finally get stress-tested in real leveling content. If you're prepping for the November 4 launch, this is the window to learn your Skyborne's class feel past the tutorial island.

How this fits the race to 60 at launch

Forever launches on fresh realms with a fresh economy and no transfers — every player, Skyborne included, starts at level 1 on November 4. The old Vanilla truth still holds: 1-60 is the most notorious grind in MMO history, and this time literally everyone is doing it at once on day one. Two bottlenecks decide how fast you clear it:

  • Leveling speed. A clean quest route and knowing which zones to skip is the difference between a week and a month. The Skyborne's +1% Haste and the Galestrider speed options help at the margins, but route discipline matters more.
  • The gold wall. Classic's riding costs are brutal on a fresh economy — mount training and the 60g epic-mount wall arrive right when your questing income can't keep up. On a brand-new server with zero supply, gold is the single biggest leveling-speed lever after route knowledge.

Forever resets everyone to zero on November 4 — the players who bank startup capital and skip the early grind hit mounts and the mainland first.

FAQ

What level is Zephras Isle in WoW Forever? Zephras Isle is the Skyborne starting zone and covers levels 1 to 12, per Blizzard's official Skyborne overview. After that you move into the shared Classic leveling zones for your faction.

Can Skyborne be Horde or Alliance? Both — but you choose at character creation and it's permanent for that character. Horde-aligned Skyborne are the Windshapers and get access to Shaman; Alliance-aligned Skyborne are the High Order and get access to Mage.

What classes can the Skyborne play? Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid on both factions; Shaman is Horde-only and Mage is Alliance-only. Skyborne cannot be Paladin, Priest or Warlock. Druids get shapeshift forms made specifically for the race.

Do I need to buy a pack to play a Skyborne? Multiple beta guides report the Skyborne race and the Zephras Isle questline require at least the Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99) or a higher edition; there is no confirmed free-with-subscription path to the Skyborne specifically. Note that the $29.99 Heroic Pack does not include beta access — only the Epic Pack ($59.99), the Warcraft Forever Collection ($79.99) and the Collector's Edition grant beta entry. See our beta access pack breakdown.

Can you skip Zephras Isle? Designers have indicated Skyborne can leave the island before level 12, so on alts you can head to the mainland early. On a first Skyborne it's worth finishing — it's the only place to see the race's story, voices and starting gear.

When does WoW Forever launch? November 4, 2026, at 15:00 PST. Name reservation runs October 27 to November 3. The beta runs September 17 through October 21, with the level cap currently at 30 after the October 1 build.
