ZZZ Best Teams (Version 3.2): Team Comps, Rules and the Slot Everyone Is Missing

Quick answer: In Zenless Zone Zero, the "best team" is not the three highest-ranked agents you own. Every one of the 59 playable agents carries an Additional Ability that stays switched off until the rest of the squad meets a specific condition — a matching Faction, a matching Attribute, or a specific Specialty teammate. We read the activation condition on all 59 agents and counted them: 17 agents can be switched on by a Support, but only 8 agents in the entire game are Supports. That 2.1-to-1 gap is the single most common reason a team of strong agents underperforms. Build around the condition first, then the damage.

This guide applies to Version 3.2 "Their Secret Histories", which the official Zenless Zone Zero site confirms is live now. Version 3.2 launched on 2026-09-09 and runs until 2026-10-21 (06:00, UTC+8). All roster counts below reflect the 59 agents playable as of 2026-09-18.

Claret, the S-Rank Electric Armorer agent introduced in Zenless Zone Zero Version 3.2

What actually makes a team work in ZZZ?

Most "best teams" lists rank agents by damage and then pair the top three. That skips the rule the game is actually built on.

Every playable agent has a Core Skill split into two parts: a Core Passive that always runs, and an Additional Ability that is conditional. The Additional Ability is where a large share of an agent's buffs, energy generation and damage bonuses live — and it does nothing at all until the squad satisfies its stated condition.

Take Claret, the headline agent of Version 3.2. Her Additional Ability, Bloodline Legacy, reads in game: "When another character in your squad is a Stun or Armorer character, or shares the same attribute: When any Agent in the squad triggers Contamination, Claret gains 300 Decibels... When Claret or another squad member triggers Maim, all Armorer Agents in the squad enter Remnant Edge. While in the Remnant Edge state, Laceration DMG is increased by 25%, lasting 40s."

Three routes satisfy her: a Stun agent, an Armorer agent, or any Electric agent. Miss all three and you lose the Decibel generation and the 25% Laceration bonus entirely — while the character sheet still shows the same attack stat. Note that a Stun agent is not strictly required, which is a common misreading of her kit.

We pulled the Additional Ability text for all 59 playable agents and sorted the conditions into three buckets:

  • 32 of 59 agents can be activated by a squadmate from the same Faction
  • 24 of 59 can be activated by a squadmate sharing the same Attribute
  • 44 of 59 name at least one Specialty (Stun, Support, Anomaly, Attack, Rupture, Defense or Armorer) as a qualifying teammate

Most agents accept more than one route — 45 of the 59 have exactly two ways in, 11 have three, and one has four. Only two agents have a single route, and one of them is absolute: Seed's condition is simply "When another Attack Character is in your squad," with no Faction or Attribute fallback anywhere in the line. The other is Caesar King, whose only route inside that taxonomy is Faction, because the alternative asks for a mechanic rather than a Specialty — more on that below.

Why is Support the hardest slot to fill in Zenless Zone Zero?

Here is where the roster data gets genuinely awkward.

Counting how many agents name each Specialty as a qualifying teammate, against how many agents actually are that Specialty:

  • Support — named by 17 agents, only 8 on the roster. Ratio 2.12
  • Rupture — named by 9, only 5 on the roster. Ratio 1.80
  • Stun — named by 16, 11 on the roster. Ratio 1.45
  • Anomaly — named by 16, 12 on the roster. Ratio 1.33
  • Armorer — named by 1, 1 on the roster (Claret). Ratio 1.00
  • Attack — named by 11, but 17 on the roster. Ratio 0.65
  • Defense — named by 3, 5 on the roster. Ratio 0.60

Attack is the most oversupplied Specialty in the game and the second-least demanded as an activation condition. Support is the opposite on both axes. If you have been pulling for damage dealers and your teams still feel flat in Shiyu Defense or Deadly Assault, this table is usually the reason — you are stacking the one resource the game hands out most freely and starving the one it hands out least.

The eight Supports, for the record, are Alexandrina Sebastiane, Astra Yao, Lucia Elowen, Luciana de Montefio, Nicole Demara, Soukaku, Sunna and Ukinami Yuzuha. The useful detail: three of the eight are A-Rank agents from the Version 1.0 launch roster — Nicole Demara, Soukaku and Luciana de Montefio. The scarcest slot in the game is one that a free-to-play account can usually fill without pulling anything.

One correction worth making explicitly, because it circulates constantly: Nicole Demara is a Support, not a Stun agent. If an agent's condition specifically requires a Stun teammate, Nicole does not satisfy it.

Nangong Yu, the S-Rank Ether Stun agent rerunning in Version 3.2 Phase I

Which agents are locked out of flexible teams?

20 of the 59 playable agents have no faction or attribute escape hatch at all — their Additional Ability only turns on with a specific Specialty teammate. These are the agents that punish a badly assembled squad hardest:

Alice Thymefield, Asaba Harumasa, Astra Yao, Banyue, Dialyn, Evelyn Chevalier, Ju Fufu, Komano Manato, Lucia Elowen, Orphie Magnusson & Magus, Promeia, Pyrois, Seed, Sigrid de L'Azur, Soldier 0 - Anby, Starlight - Billy Kid, Ye Shunguang, Yidhari Murphy, Yixuan and Zhao.

Within that hard-locked group, the concentration is severe: 14 of the 20 accept a Support, 12 accept a Stun, and 16 of the 20 are satisfied by a Support or a Stun. One correctly chosen utility agent unlocks four fifths of the strictest roster in the game.

The mirror-image finding is the encouraging one. Of the 17 agents released in Version 1.0, not a single one is Specialty-locked — every launch agent activates on Faction or Attribute. The starter roster is, by design, the most forgiving glue in the game, which is exactly why a new account is rarely as far behind as it feels.

One agent sits outside both patterns. Caesar King's condition is "When another character in your squad can activate Defensive Assist or shares the same Faction" — a mechanic-based requirement rather than a Specialty one, and the only condition of its kind on the roster. Version 3.2 is relevant here: HoYoverse states that "the Perfect Assist trigger mechanism has been optimized: golden flashes now consistently trigger Defensive Assist, while red flashes consistently trigger Evasive Assist," which makes that condition easier to read in combat than it was before.

What are the best teams in ZZZ Version 3.2 right now?

Rather than a damage ranking we cannot verify, here are cores that satisfy their own activation conditions — the part that is objectively checkable.

Claret core (current Phase I debut). Claret needs a Stun agent, an Armorer agent, or any Electric agent. Alexandrina Sebastiane is the only Support in the game providing both PEN Ratio and DEF%, which matches Claret's DEF-scaling kit — but that benefit requires her Potential to be unlocked, so do not plan around it blindly. Norma Hollowell is the day-one substitute, extending Claret's Crimson Inscription through Chain Attacks. Koleda Belobog's Potential Vision buffs Armorer Laceration, though it is the weaker option. The strongest listed Laceration buff belongs to Roxy, and Roxy does not arrive until Phase II — so any "best Claret team" that names Roxy today is describing a team you cannot field yet. For the full kit breakdown, see our ZZZ Claret build guide.

Nangong Yu core (current Phase I rerun). HoYoverse's official Version 2.7 overview identifies Nangong Yu as an S-Rank Ether Stun agent. Her own condition is satisfied by an Anomaly teammate or a same-Faction ally, and because she is a Stun agent she simultaneously satisfies the 16 agents that name Stun. That dual role is why she slots into far more squads than her banner placement suggests. Her rerun runs on the "Axiom of Captivation" channel through 2026-09-30 11:59 server time — the ZZZ 3.2 banner schedule has the full phase breakdown.

Any Version 1.0 core. Anby Demara, Nicole Demara and Billy Kid all share the Cunning Hares faction and all activate on Faction or Attribute, so the squad self-satisfies with zero pulls. It will not top a damage chart, but every Additional Ability in it is actually running, which is more than can be said for many mixed S-Rank squads.

The rule to carry into every comp: check the condition before you check the tier. If you want the damage ordering alongside this, our ZZZ tier list covers agent rankings, and the ZZZ W-Engine tier list covers the weapon side.

Soukaku, one of three A-Rank Supports from the Version 1.0 launch roster

What is the best free team in ZZZ?

Practically speaking, the strongest free foundation is any launch-roster trio that shares a Faction, because all 17 Version 1.0 agents activate on Faction or Attribute. Cunning Hares (Anby Demara, Nicole Demara, Billy Kid) is the cleanest example — three agents, one shared Faction, every Additional Ability live.

From there the upgrade path is not "replace them with S-Ranks." It is: keep whichever of them satisfies your main damage dealer's condition, and replace the slot that satisfies nothing. Nicole Demara and Soukaku in particular stay useful far longer than their A-Rank label implies, precisely because of the 17-to-8 Support shortage above.

How do you fix a team that feels weak?

Work the checklist in this order.

  • Read all three Additional Abilities. Not the tier list — the actual condition line on each agent. If any one of them is unsatisfied, that is your problem, and no amount of gear fixes it.
  • Count your Specialties, not your S-Ranks. Three Attack agents is the most common bad squad in the game: Attack is the only Specialty with more supply (17) than demand (11).
  • Slot a Support or a Stun before anything else. Those two cover 16 of the 20 hardest-locked agents in the game.
  • Check Faction and Attribute before assuming you need a specific Specialty. 32 agents accept a Faction match and 24 accept an Attribute match; you may already own a legal answer.
  • Only then look at gear. Drive Discs and W-Engines multiply a working team; they do not switch on a dead Additional Ability.

One caveat worth being honest about: this framework tells you which teams are legal and fully switched on. It does not by itself rank damage between two teams that are both fully activated — that still depends on your gear, your Mindscape levels, and the encounter. What it does reliably do is eliminate the large category of squads that were never going to work regardless of investment.

What is not confirmed yet

  • Phase II dates. HoYoverse has published the Phase I end as 2026-09-30 11:59 server time. The Phase II start and end dates circulating for Roxy and the Promeia rerun are third-party consensus, not a first-party calendar. Treat them as provisional.
  • Any agent past Roxy. Rosters for Version 3.3 circulating on aggregator sites are unverified datamines. This guide names no agent that HoYoverse has not announced.
  • Damage ordering between fully activated teams. No public dataset settles this cleanly, and we are not going to assert one.

FAQ

What is the best team in ZZZ Version 3.2? There is no single best team, because most agents' Additional Abilities only activate under specific squad conditions. The best team you can field is the one where all three agents have their Additional Ability condition satisfied — most commonly achieved by adding a Support or a Stun agent, which together unlock 16 of the 20 most restrictive agents in the game.

Do I need a Support in every ZZZ team? Not literally, but Support is the most demanded and least supplied Specialty: 17 of 59 agents name Support as a qualifying teammate while only 8 agents are Supports. If a team feels weak, an unfilled Support slot is the most statistically likely cause.

Can A-Rank agents work in endgame teams? Yes. All 17 Version 1.0 agents, including the A-Ranks, activate on Faction or Attribute rather than a specific Specialty, which makes them unusually flexible. Three of the game's eight Supports — Nicole Demara, Soukaku and Luciana de Montefio — are A-Ranks from that launch roster.

Is Nicole Demara a Stun agent? No. Nicole Demara is a Support. If an agent's Additional Ability specifically requires a Stun teammate, Nicole does not satisfy that condition.

Does Claret need a Stun agent on her team? No. Claret's Bloodline Legacy activates with a Stun agent, an Armorer agent, or any agent sharing her Electric attribute. Any one of the three is enough.

Is my account too reliant on one Specialty? If you own three or more Attack agents and fewer than two Supports or Stuns, yes — that is the most common roster imbalance, and it is a direct consequence of Attack being the only oversupplied Specialty on the roster.

How many agents are in ZZZ right now? As of 2026-09-18, in Version 3.2, there are 59 playable agents, with Claret the most recent addition and the first of the new Armorer Specialty.

What is the Armorer Specialty? HoYoverse describes it this way: "Armorer is a brand-new Agent Specialty introduced in Zenless Zone Zero, built around balancing offense and defense as its core. It features the all-new Maim and multi-CRIT mechanics." Claret is currently the only Armorer agent, so the Armorer activation route exists on exactly one condition line in the game — her own.
