Key to the Arcatraz

Key to the Arcatraz — The Shard Run Through Botanica and Mechanar

  • Botanica + Mechanar
  • No Rep Required

The Key to the Arcatraz is a quest reward, not a drop and not a reputation purchase. One key is $28.80. Pairing it with the Warpforged Key is $57.60.

Where it comes from: a 12-step Consortium chain that opens at Area 52 in Netherstorm with Anchorite Karja (Aldor) or Spymaster Thalodien (Scryer) on Assisting the Consortium. Your character has to be level 67 and has to have already picked a side — Aldor or Scryer — or neither NPC will hand the quest over. The middle of the chain is overland busywork: 10 Zaxxis Insignia at The Heap, 10 crates at Manaforge Duro, three triangulation stops and the level 70 elite Culuthas in the Ruins of Farahlon.

The two shards:

  • Top Shard of the Arcatraz KeyWarp Splinter, last boss of The Botanica;
  • Bottom Shard of the Arcatraz KeyPathaleon the Calculator, last boss of The Mechanar;
  • A’dal in Shattrath fuses the halves on How to Break Into the Arcatraz, which also pays 1,000 Sha’tar reputation.

Why it eats an evening: the shard half needs two grouped dungeon runs and a flying mount to reach both Tempest Keep wings, and the quest is not shared — every character wants its own key. Booked here at roughly 2 hours, piloted by default.

This is not our Heroic Dungeon Keys listing. That one sells the five Revered-gated keys — Flamewrought, Reservoir, Auchenai, Warpforged and the Key of Time. The Arcatraz key carries no reputation requirement at all, so it is a separate job at the same $28.80 rate.

Why alts want it: The Arcatraz is the third of Kael’thas Sunstrider’s Tempest Keep wings and it holds the Seer Udalo step of the Black Temple attunement, so every raider you push into Phase 3 walks through that door.

Frequently asked questions

  • The Key to the Arcatraz comes from a 12-step Consortium quest chain, not from a vendor. It starts at Area 52 in Netherstorm with Anchorite Karja for Aldor characters or Spymaster Thalodien for Scryers, runs through Nether-Stalker Khay’ji and the Stormspire, and finishes with A’dal in Shattrath on How to Break Into the Arcatraz.

  • Level 67 is the hard gate on How to Break Into the Arcatraz and the chain that feeds it. You also have to have already chosen Aldor or Scryer, because the opening quest is only offered by your own faction’s NPC in the Area 52 inn. A character that has not picked a side cannot start the chain at all.

  • Two, both in Tempest Keep. The Top Shard of the Arcatraz Key comes off Warp Splinter, the last boss of The Botanica, and the Bottom Shard comes off Pathaleon the Calculator, the last boss of The Mechanar. A’dal in Shattrath combines the two halves into the finished Key to the Arcatraz.

  • For that one run, no — a single keyholder can open the Arcatraz door and the rest of the group walks in behind them. You need your own Key to the Arcatraz any time you want to open the instance yourself, and since the key sits on the character that earned it, every alt has to run the chain again.

  • No. The Heroic Dungeon Keys listing on timesaver.gg covers the five Revered-gated keys — Flamewrought, Reservoir, Auchenai, Warpforged and the Key of Time. The Key to the Arcatraz has no reputation requirement and is bought here as its own SKU at $28.80, or $57.60 alongside the Warpforged Key.

  • No. Blizzard pulled the Karazhan, Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep attunements from the Anniversary realms on August 27, 2026, so those raids are walk-in and none of them gate this key. The Key to the Arcatraz only needs level 67, an Aldor or Scryer choice, and the two shard bosses.

  • About 2 hours end to end. The overland Consortium steps are solo but scattered across all of Netherstorm, and the finish is two grouped dungeon clears — The Botanica and The Mechanar — plus the flight between them and the turn-in to A’dal in Shattrath. Express and Super Express move your order up the queue.

  • Yes. Pick US or EU at the top of the order form; both regions carry their own price ladder at the same $28.80 rate. US Anniversary realms are the default, boosters schedule around ET and PT prime time so your character is free when you want to play, and support answers in English in USD.
