Nightbane Kill

Nightbane - Karazhan's Summoned Dragon and the Blackened Urn

  • Summoned Dragon Boss
  • Blackened Urn Chain

Nightbane is Karazhan's optional undead dragon, fought on the Master's Terrace — the side balcony off the servants' entrance, not the main raid path — and he does not exist until somebody clicks the Blackened Urn. He is a level 73 boss with roughly 1.33 million health, and most raids call him the tower's real final boss. Summoned and killed, he starts at $68.39.

The urn is the whole problem. It ends a nine-quest chain that opens at Archmage Alturus outside the front door in Deadwind Pass, and only once your character is Honored with The Violet Eye — reputation you can only earn off Karazhan bosses and trash. The chain runs Medivh's Journal, In Good Hands, Kamsis, The Shade of Aran (the journal is looted off Aran himself), The Master's Terrace, Digging Up the Past, A Colleague's Aid with Kalynna Lathred in Area 52, then Kalynna's Request, which sends you into Heroic Sethekk Halls and Heroic Shattered Halls for two books. Digging Up the Past will not complete while you are in a raid group, and that single step strands more players than the rest of the chain put together. The urn is permanent but bound to one character — only the player who finished the chain can start the encounter.

The encounter is four ground phases and three air phases, flipping at 75%, 50% and 25% health, and a clean kill runs 10 to 12 minutes. On the ground it is Bellowing Roar every 45-50 seconds, Charred Earth burning for 30 seconds under a random player, and a frontal Smoldering Breath the tank absorbs. The air phase is the wipe filter: Rain of Bones spawns five Restless Skeletons, Smoking Blast hits one player for about 2,000 damage per second for 15 seconds, and threat resets every time he lands.

What the dragon actually drops:

  • Nightstaff of the Everliving — the two-handed healing staff, +348 healing;
  • Panzar'Thar Breastplate, 1,450 armor of tank chest, plus both of his shields, Shield of Impenetrable Darkness and Dragonheart Flameshield;
  • Emberspur Talisman, +66 healing and 11 mana every 5 seconds;
  • Robe of the Elder Scribes, Talisman of Nightbane, Stonebough Jerkin and Ironstriders of Urgency.

He drops no Tier 4 token and no mount. The dragon mount that shares his name belongs to a far later expansion, so nobody can sell you one here. Karazhan sits on a 7-day lockout, which caps him at one kill per reset. timesaver.gg books him as the dragon by himself: the chain finished on your character if you need the urn, then the summon and the kill, on US and EU realms.

Frequently asked questions

  • Nightbane is summoned on the Master's Terrace, the side balcony in Karazhan, by a character who holds the Blackened Urn. Using the urn starts a roughly 30-second countdown before the dragon lands, which is the only window the raid gets to set positions. Only the character who finished the quest chain can trigger it, so the urn holder has to be in the raid that night.

  • The Blackened Urn is the reward at the end of a nine-quest chain that begins with Medivh's Journal from Archmage Alturus outside Karazhan in Deadwind Pass. You need Honored with The Violet Eye to pick it up, a kill on Shade of Aran to loot Medivh's Journal, and access to Heroic Sethekk Halls and Heroic Shattered Halls for the two books in Kalynna's Request. One step, Digging Up the Past, only completes while you are out of a raid group.

  • No. Karazhan has been walk-in on the Anniversary realms since 27 August 2026, so no key or attunement is required to enter. Nightbane's own gate is the Blackened Urn quest chain, which is a separate questline and is still live in the game. Any level 70 character can be brought to the Master's Terrace as long as one player in the raid carries the urn.

  • A clean Nightbane kill runs about 10 to 12 minutes. He alternates four ground phases with three air phases, taking off at 75%, 50% and 25% health, and his threat table resets every time he lands. That length is why he is the most common wasted lockout in Karazhan — most pug groups never book the time for him.

  • Nightbane's table is skewed hard toward tanks and healers. It holds Nightstaff of the Everliving (+348 healing), Panzar'Thar Breastplate at 1,450 armor, Shield of Impenetrable Darkness, Dragonheart Flameshield, Emberspur Talisman with +66 healing and 11 mana per 5 seconds, Robe of the Elder Scribes, Talisman of Nightbane, Stonebough Jerkin, Chestguard of the Conniver and Ironstriders of Urgency.

  • Neither. Nightbane drops no Tier 4 tier token in The Burning Crusade — the Karazhan tokens come off Prince Malchezaar and The Curator — and he drops no mount either. The skeletal dragon mount that carries his name is from a much later expansion, so treat any listing promising a Nightbane mount on TBC Anniversary as false.

  • Once per Karazhan lockout, which resets every 7 days. The Blackened Urn itself has no cooldown and is never consumed, so the same character can summon the dragon on every fresh reset for as long as they keep the item in their bags. If the urn holder misses the night, the raid simply cannot summon him at all that week.

  • Every US and EU Burning Crusade Anniversary realm, both factions, with the region picked at the top of the order form. US customers can schedule a self-play run around ET or PT raid nights, and support answers around the clock in USD-priced orders. Piloted runs need no scheduling from you at all — the team takes the character when a 10-player group forms.
