99 Nights in the Forest Best Weapons Tier List (October 2026): All Melee & Ranged Ranked

Picking the wrong weapon in 99 Nights in the Forest is the difference between surviving the 99th night and respawning on Day 1. With 137,376 players online right now and more than 30 billion visits logged (live Roblox stats, Oct 13 2026), the survival-horror hit has one of the deepest weapon rosters on the platform — over 30 melee and ranged options — and most of them are traps that waste a chest slot. This tier list ranks every attainable weapon by real damage, swing speed and how hard it is to actually get, so you spend your chest luck on the ones that end fights.

Quick answer (TLDR): The best melee weapon you can farm is the Infernal Sword (Volcanic Biome, ignites on hit), with the Morningstar (70 damage, Gold Chest) and Ice Sword close behind. The best ranged weapon is the Infernal Crossbow (55 damage + burning, infinite ammo), followed by the Tactical Shotgun (highest ranged damage) and Laser Cannon. The Cultist King Mace has the single highest melee damage in the game but you have to kill the Cultist King for it. The Admin Axe one-shots almost everything but only drops during Update Party events, so it is not a reliable pick. Avoid the Old Axe, Snowball and Revolver past the early game.

What makes a weapon good in 99 Nights in the Forest?

Three things decide a weapon's tier: raw damage per hit, swing or fire speed (damage-per-second matters more than a big number on a slow swing), and how you obtain it — an S-tier stat line locked behind a one-time event or a boss kill is worth less to most runs than a strong weapon you can farm from chests every night.

Enemies scale hard as the nights go on. Early wolves and bears fall to a Good Axe, but the Mega Cultist, the Forest Deer and the volcano-biome threats shrug off anything below A tier. A weapon also has to keep up with the day cycle: you want your best option in hand before the night-time swarms arrive, which is why acquisition difficulty is weighted so heavily here.

99 Nights in the Forest weapons tier list (October 2026)

Here is the full ranking. Tiers reflect the current live build as of October 13, 2026 — before the Halloween event (see the FAQ for timing). Damage figures are drawn from in-game testing aggregated by the community weapon database and cross-checked against Pocket Tactics and Finding Dulcinea.

S tier — end-game, fight-enders:

  • Cultist King Mace (melee) — the highest melee damage in the game; heavy swing. Drops from the Cultist King boss.
  • Infernal Sword (melee) — 50+ damage and ignites any struck enemy; from Infernal Chests, the Cultist King, or the 8-sacrifice volcano ritual.
  • Tactical Shotgun (ranged) — the highest ranged damage in the game. Ruby Chests or the Workshop.
  • Infernal Crossbow (ranged) — 55 damage plus a burning DoT, with infinite ammo; it even cooks your meat. Volcanic Biome, Cultist King, or the Fire Bandit class.
  • Ice Sword (melee) — high damage with a Frost slow that kites bears; Ice Chests in the Snow Biome.
  • Poison Spear (melee) — 25 damage, a fast 0.5s swing and poison on every hit; the Frog King's signature drop (8 Frog Keys) or whirlpool fishing.
  • Flamethrower (ranged) — continuous fire damage; Pyromaniac class only (600 Diamonds).

A tier — strong, farmable, reliable:

  • Morningstar (melee) — 70 damage on a 1-second swing with an explosion bar that hits everything nearby. Gold Chests only.
  • Obsidiron Hammer (melee) — 70 damage, 1s swing, same explosion bar as the Morningstar; the Meteor-event melee.
  • Laser Cannon (ranged) — extremely high per shot but fires slowly and burns 50% of the Alien Tech bar per shot. Broken UFOs, Motherships, or the Cyborg class.
  • Laser Sword (melee) — high damage, above the Spear; from Broken UFOs and Motherships.
  • Strong Axe (melee) — high damage; Gold/Legendary Chests or the Pelt Trader.
  • Ray Gun (ranged) — 10 damage per shot, 15 on a headshot, 13 shots per Alien Tech bar, 9.5-second overheat; Alien class, UFOs.
  • Katana (melee) — Assassin-exclusive, fast attack speed.
  • Crossbow / Wildfire / Blowpipe (ranged) — solid mid-game ranged options with elemental or poison effects.

B tier — fine until you upgrade:

  • Rifle (ranged) — high per shot but slow; Big Game Hunter class, chests, Pelt Trader.
  • Chainsaw (melee) — continuous damage, less than the Spear per tick; Ruby Chests or Workshop.
  • Spear (melee) — the reliable mid-game baseline; Good Chests or the Pelt Trader.
  • Kunai (ranged) — the Assassin's throwing knife; the only ranged weapon that never reloads.
  • Revolver (ranged) — moderate; a stopgap, not a keeper.

C/D tier — early game only:

  • Good Axe — your workhorse for the first few days, then replace it.
  • Old Axe — the free starting item. Swap it out of your first chest.
  • Snowball — low damage with a cold effect; novelty.

The Infernal Sword, the red-bladed S-tier melee weapon in 99 Nights in the Forest

What is the best melee weapon in 99 Nights in the Forest?

For a farmable run, the Infernal Sword is the best melee weapon: 50+ damage per hit plus a burn that keeps ticking while you reposition, and it comes from the Volcanic Biome rather than a one-time event. If you are willing to fight for it, the Cultist King Mace edges it out on raw damage — community consensus calls it "the highest melee damage in the game" — but you have to defeat the Cultist King to claim it, which is a late-run commitment.

The Morningstar is the pick if your damage is coming from Gold Chests: 70 per hit on a 1-second swing with an area explosion bar means it clears night-time packs, not just single targets. The Ice Sword earns its S placement less for its number and more for the Frost slow, which lets you solo a bear that would otherwise close the gap on you.

What is the best ranged weapon in 99 Nights in the Forest?

The Infernal Crossbow is the best ranged weapon overall. At 55 damage with a burning effect and infinite ammo, it never leaves you reloading at the wrong moment, and the burn stacks on top of the direct hit. The Tactical Shotgun posts the highest ranged damage in the game for close-range panic situations, and the Laser Cannon deletes single targets — "extremely high damage per shot," in the words of multiple weapon guides — at the cost of a slow fire rate and a hungry energy bar.

Skip the Revolver and Snowball for anything past the first few days. They exist to get you to your first real chest, nothing more.

How do you get the best weapons fast?

Acquisition is the real tier list. Here is where the top picks actually come from:

  • Infernal Sword / Infernal Crossbow → the Volcanic Biome: open Infernal Chests, or perform the 8-cultist volcano sacrifice ritual to spawn a guaranteed chest.
  • Morningstar / Strong Axe → Gold Chests, which are rare — prioritise map exploration on the days you are not fighting.
  • Ice Sword → Ice Chests in the Snow Biome and the Ice Temple.
  • Cultist King Mace / Infernal Sword → defeat the Cultist King (also the route to the Infernal Crossbow).
  • Class-locked weapons (Flamethrower, Katana, Ray Gun) → pick the matching class at the start of the run; there is no chest route for these.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single best weapon in 99 Nights in the Forest? The Admin Axe is the strongest weapon overall — it one-hit-kills everything except the Mega Cultist — but it only appears during limited Update Party events, so it is not something you can rely on. Among weapons you can obtain in a normal run, the Cultist King Mace has the highest melee damage and the Tactical Shotgun the highest ranged damage, while the Infernal Sword and Infernal Crossbow are the best farmable picks.

Is the Infernal Sword or the Infernal Crossbow better? The Crossbow for most situations — 55 damage, a burning DoT and infinite ammo let you fight at range without reloading. The Sword hits slightly harder up close and also ignites enemies, so carry the Sword as your melee and the Crossbow as your ranged if you can get both from the Volcanic Biome.

How many weapons are there in 99 Nights in the Forest? There are over 30 melee and ranged weapons in the current build, spread across common chest drops, biome-specific chests (Ice, Infernal, Gold, Ruby), boss drops like the Cultist King Mace, and class-exclusive weapons such as the Katana and Flamethrower.

Does the Halloween event add new weapons? The 2026 Halloween event is scheduled to begin October 18, 2026, after this list's snapshot date. Event rewards are expected to include weapons like the Laser Cannon, Ray Gun and Frozen Shuriken as trick-or-treat drops, but those are existing weapons made easier to obtain rather than brand-new additions. We will refresh this tier list once the event is live.

What weapons should a beginner avoid wasting a chest slot on? Drop the Old Axe and Revolver the moment you find anything better, and treat the Snowball as a novelty. These are early-game stopgaps; holding onto them past Day 3–4 means you are under-geared when the night swarms scale up.
