Updated October 24, 2026 · applies to Season 88 (Shocktober), the October 6 balance patch and the October 19 balance update.

Quick answer: The best deck for Arena 5 (Builder's Workshop, 1,300–1,599 trophies) in October 2026 is a Hog Rider cycle: Hog Rider, Mini P.E.K.K.A, Musketeer, Goblin Cage, Fireball, Zap, Skeletons and Electro Spirit (3.0 Elixir). Every card is Common or Rare and unlocks at or before Arena 5. If you'd rather use the new flying win condition, run Minion Giant control (about 3.3 Elixir), or build slow pushes with Giant beatdown (about 3.1 Elixir). Arena 5 is also where Heroes unlock, and new players get 200 free Hero Coins the moment they arrive.

Builder's Workshop is the arena where most new players stall. The Reddit thread title "Hard stuck at 1500 trophies" turns up on r/ClashRoyale regularly, and the reason is simple. Arena 5 hands you two new win conditions at once (Hog Rider and Minion Giant) and everyone around you starts using them. This guide uses only cards you can own at 1,300 trophies. It explains which of the seven new cards are worth your Gold and how to spend your first 200 Hero Coins. It also covers what Supercell's October balance passes changed for this arena.

Key takeaways

  • Arena 5 is Builder's Workshop, from 1,300 to 1,599 trophies, with a King Level 5 requirement. At 1,600 you move into Arena 6, P.E.K.K.A's Playhouse (Clash Royale Wiki: Arenas).
  • It unlocks 7 cards: Hog Rider, Minion Giant, Flying Machine and Rocket (Rare), plus Zap, Bats and Mortar (Common).
  • It also unlocks Heroes and your first Hero slot. Supercell's own wording: "If you're new to the game, you'll receive the 200 Hero Coins upon reaching Arena 5" (Mid-March Update). That's one Hero of your choice, free.
  • Minion Giant has been nerfed three times in six weeks: damage 189 → 168 on September 16 (September Balance Changes), hit speed 1.5s → 1.7s on October 6 and damage 168 → 153 on October 19 (October Balance Changes). It's still the best new Arena 5 card in the data.
  • Flying Machine was buffed on October 19 (damage 171 → 179, +4%).
  • No balance changes at the start of the November season. Supercell moved the November changes forward to October 19 because of the CRL World Finals, so these decks should hold into Season 89.

Which cards can you use at Arena 5?

Your card pool at Builder's Workshop is everything from the Training Camp through Arena 5 (Clash Royale Wiki: Arenas):

ArenaTrophiesCards it unlocks
Training Camp + Arena 10–299Knight, Archers, Musketeer, Giant, Mini P.E.K.K.A, Minions, Arrows, Fireball, Goblins, Spear Goblins, Goblin Cage, Goblin Hut
2 · Bone Pit300–599Skeletons, Bomber, Valkyrie, Tombstone
3 · Barbarian Bowl600–999Cannon, Barbarians, Mega Minion, Battle Ram
4 · Spell Valley1,000–1,299Wizard, Inferno Tower, Bomb Tower, Skeleton Dragons, Fire Spirit, Electro Spirit
5 · Builder's Workshop1,300–1,599Hog Rider, Minion Giant, Flying Machine, Rocket, Zap, Bats, Mortar

The trap in most "best Arena 5 deck" lists: they include cards you don't have yet. RoyaleTracker's first recommended Arena 5 deck, for example, is Giant, Witch, Knight, Archers, Goblins, Minions, Skeletons and Skeleton Army (RoyaleTracker: Arena 5, checked October 24, 2026). Witch and Skeleton Army are Epics, and Epic cards don't unlock until Arena 6. The same goes for Baby Dragon, P.E.K.K.A, Goblin Barrel and Guards. Royal Giant, Prince and Balloon wait until Arena 7. The Log, Princess, Miner and Mega Knight are Legendaries, which arrive at Arena 11. Every deck below sticks to cards you can own right now.

What is the best deck for Arena 5 right now?

Clash Royale Hog Rider, the 4-Elixir Rare win condition that unlocks in Builder's Workshop

Our pick for most players between 1,300 and 1,599 trophies is a Hog Rider cycle. Hog Rider is the card Builder's Workshop is built around: you can pick 50 copies of Hog Rider (or Flying Machine) as the Trophy Road reward at 1,525 trophies. It's also the deck that carries you through the next arena. Our Arena 6 guide recommends the same core.

The deck (3.0 average Elixir):

CardElixirRarityJob
Hog Rider4RareWin condition
Mini P.E.K.K.A4RareTank killer, counter-push
Musketeer4RareRanged support, air defence
Goblin Cage4RareBuilding that pulls Giant and Hog, then releases a Brawler
Fireball4RareMedium spell
Zap2CommonSmall spell, reset
Skeletons1CommonCheapest distraction in the game
Electro Spirit1CommonChain stun, cycle

That's 24 Elixir across 8 cards, an exact 3.0 average.

Why Goblin Cage instead of Cannon: at this trophy range Goblin Cage rates 51.2% in RoyaleTracker's card tiers against 48.0% for Cannon. Supercell also gave its Goblin Brawler more health on September 8 (1,080 → 1,121 HP) and explained why: "Goblin Brawler has been left out of the action ever since the nerf to his Evolution. He's now ready to hop back into the brawl tougher than ever." (September Balance Changes, dated September 2026). The Cage pulls a Giant or enemy Hog Rider into the middle. Then the Brawler pops out and keeps fighting.

How to play it: defend cheaply, then counter-punch. When your opponent drops a 5-Elixir Giant at the back, send a lone Hog Rider to the other lane right away. They can't defend both. Hog Rider has 1,697 HP and hits for 317 at Level 11 (Clash Royale Wiki: Hog Rider). Mini P.E.K.K.A hits for 755 with 1,390 HP (Clash Royale Wiki: Mini P.E.K.K.A), so it deletes most tanks you'll see here while your Crown Tower helps. Save Zap for Goblins or Spear Goblins. Zap deals 192 at Level 11, so it leaves same-level Goblins (202 HP) on a sliver for your tower to finish. Arrows kills them outright.

Electro Spirit note: since the August 2026 balance changes it no longer damages Crown Towers on its own. Play it as a 1-Elixir stun on defence, not as chip damage.

Option: swap Musketeer for Flying Machine if you've picked it up. It has better numbers right now (see below) and does the same job: flying, ranged, hits air and ground.

Is Minion Giant good at Arena 5?

Clash Royale Minion Giant card, the flying win condition that unlocks at Arena 5

Yes. Despite three nerfs, it's still the best of the seven new cards in RoyaleTracker's data: 51.0% win rate at 7.5% use. Minion Giant is a Rare, 4-Elixir flying win condition that only attacks buildings and Crown Towers. Melee and ground-only cards like Knight, Mini P.E.K.K.A, Valkyrie and Giant can't touch it, so a lot of low-ladder decks have only two or three real answers.

Supercell's own notes show how strong it was at launch. On October 6: "Minion Giant was too punishing for a flying win condition. We're slowing down his hit speed to retain his 'Giant' feel while cutting down on his damage output." On October 19: "For a Giant, this cave dweller applies too much quick pressure." (October Balance Changes). Across October its Crown Tower damage per second fell by about a fifth (168 every 1.5s → 153 every 1.7s).

The deck: Minion Giant control (3.25 average Elixir):

  • Minion Giant (win condition, 4)
  • Mini P.E.K.K.A (tank killer, 4)
  • Skeleton Dragons (splash, air and ground, 4)
  • Tombstone (building, pulls Hog and Giant, 3)
  • Minions (air defence, 3)
  • Bomber (swarm defence, 2)
  • Fireball (medium spell, 4)
  • Zap (small spell, 2)

That's 26 Elixir across 8 cards.

How to play it: this deck wins on defence first. Tombstone and Mini P.E.K.K.A stop ground pushes. Skeleton Dragons and Minions cover the air. Once you've won a trade, drop Minion Giant at the bridge behind your surviving defenders. Skeleton Dragons is the card that makes the list work. It's the only card RoyaleTracker rates S tier at this range (52.1%), and it's a Common that unlocks at Arena 4.

What beats it: Musketeer, Minions, Bats and Flying Machine can all attack it. If your opponent holds two of those, pressure the other lane with Minion Giant only after they've spent them. Our Minion Giant counter guide covers the other side of the matchup.

Is Giant beatdown good at Arena 5?

It's a strong option if you'd rather build big pushes than cycle. Giant is a Rare from the Training Camp with 3,968 HP at Level 11 (Clash Royale Wiki: Giant), and RoyaleTracker rates it 51.3%. That makes it the second-best card at this range after Skeleton Dragons.

The deck (3.1 average Elixir):

  • Giant (win condition, 5)
  • Skeleton Dragons (splash support, 4)
  • Mini P.E.K.K.A (tank killer, 4)
  • Minions (air defence, 3)
  • Bomber (swarm defence, 2)
  • Skeletons (distraction, 1)
  • Fireball (medium spell, 4)
  • Zap (small spell, 2)

That's 25 Elixir, a 3.125 average.

How to play it: defend the first minute cheaply, then start a Giant from the back once you're up Elixir. Add Skeleton Dragons behind him as he crosses the bridge. Giant only targets buildings, so his support has to deal with the Mini P.E.K.K.A or Skeletons sent to stop him. Watch for a Goblin Cage or Tombstone in the middle: Giant will walk into it, so place him on the far side of the lane or send him when their building is out of cycle.

Which Arena 5 cards are worth leveling?

Clash Royale Flying Machine, the Arena 5 Rare buffed in the October 19, 2026 balance update

Gold is tight at this stage, so spend it on cards that pay off. Here are the seven new cards from RoyaleTracker's card tiers (snapshot checked October 24, 2026, RoyaleTracker: Arena 5):

Arena 5 cardElixirRarityWin rateUse rateVerdict
Minion Giant4Rare51.0%7.5%Level it. Best new card here, even after three nerfs.
Flying Machine4Rare50.6%2.1%Underrated. Buffed October 19.
Zap2Common49.8%12.0%Solid small spell. Most decks want Zap or Arrows.
Rocket6Rare48.0%4.2%Niche. Only for siege or spell-cycle decks.
Hog Rider4Rare47.9%14.0%Most-used win condition. Rewards skill, not autopilot.
Bats2Common47.3%4.9%Fine as a cheap air card. Dies to every small spell.
Mortar4Common46.7%0.3%Skip for now.

(The baseline win rate across all cards is 49.49%.)

A note on that data: RoyaleTracker shows the same per-card figures for these cards on its Arena 5, 6 and 7 pages, with only the baseline changing. Treat them as a pooled low-trophy snapshot, not a measurement taken only inside Builder's Workshop. The direction still matters. Hog Rider is the most popular new card and sits below average. It's a card that loses when played on autopilot and wins when you count Elixir.

Flying Machine got a small damage buff on October 19 (171 → 179), with a Builder-themed note from Supercell: "Flying Machine struggles to compete with other ranged and flying cards, so Builder's giving this contraption a slight damage boost." It's a ranged flier that hits air and ground, so it shoots down Minion Giant from behind your tower. If you take Hog Rider at 1,525 trophies, pick up Flying Machine copies wherever else you can.

Mortar and Rocket are the expensive traps. Mortar is a siege building that needs precise placement and a deck built around it. RoyaleTracker has it in 0.3% of decks at this range. Rocket costs 6 Elixir, so missing it often loses you the game. Take Cannon over Mortar at the 1,475-trophy reward unless you're committed to siege.

What decks will you face in Builder's Workshop?

  • Hog Rider. The most-used win condition on the snapshot (14.0% of decks). Keep Goblin Cage, Tombstone or Mini P.E.K.K.A ready, and Skeletons as a 1-Elixir distraction.
  • Minion Giant. In 7.5% of decks. Musketeer, Minions or Skeleton Dragons handle it. Don't answer it with melee troops; they can't hit it.
  • Giant beatdown. Don't fight the tank head-on with your win condition. Pull with a building, swarm with Skeletons, and punish the other lane while they spend 5 Elixir.
  • Goblin Hut and Goblin Cage spam. Goblin Hut sits in 5.4% of decks. Fireball clears the Spear Goblins but not the Hut (1,228 HP at Level 11 against Fireball's 688), so send a Hog Rider down that lane: it locks onto the Hut, the nearest building.
  • Skeletons. Since October 19 they always split on middle tiles (spawn spread 0.4 → 0.5 tiles). Bomber, Zap and Skeleton Dragons still kill them all.

Which Hero should you pick at Arena 5?

Arena 5 opens your Hero slot. If you're new, Supercell gives you 200 Hero Coins on arrival, which is exactly one Hero. After that, the Pass Royale free track pays Hero Coins "up to 75 every season," as Supercell put it in March 2026, so your second Hero takes about three seasons on the free track (Mid-March Update). Spend the first 200 carefully. To unlock it, go to Magic Items → Heroes, tap Unlock and choose.

Pick a Hero whose base card you'll actually play. For the three decks above, that's Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A, because Mini P.E.K.K.A is in all three. Its ability, Breakfast Boost, costs 1 Elixir: it eats the pancakes it has cooked, heals 30% and gains up to five extra levels for the rest of its life. Our Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A guide has the full breakdown. Hero Musketeer fits the Hog cycle, and Hero Giant fits the beatdown deck. For a wider comparison, see which Clash Royale Hero to unlock first.

Since the August 2026 balance changes, Hero and Champion abilities fire once per deployment (Boss Bandit is the only exception). Save the ability for the fight it decides. You don't need an Evolution to win here. You've had one Evolution slot since Arena 3, and the Wild slot, which takes an Evolution, a Hero or a Champion, opens at Arena 10.

How do you get out of Arena 5 faster?

Builder's Workshop has six Trophy Road rewards (Clash Royale Wiki: Arenas):

TrophiesReward
1,325300 copies of Zap or Bats (your choice)
1,3753,000 Gold
1,42545 copies of Rocket
1,475300 copies of Cannon or Mortar (your choice)
1,52550 copies of Hog Rider or Flying Machine (your choice)
1,5754,000 Gold

Take Zap at 1,325 and Cannon at 1,475. At 1,525, take Hog Rider if you're playing the Hog cycle and Flying Machine if you're playing either of the other decks. Gold per level is the same for every rarity, so a Common deck doesn't save Gold. What it saves is copies, which are much easier to find for Commons and Rares.

Three habits get you past 1,500 faster than switching decks:

  • Pick one deck and stay with it. You only learn matchups by playing them.
  • Count Elixir on big drops. A Giant or Minion Giant played at the back is your cue to attack the other lane.
  • Stop after two losses in a row. Once you've reached Builder's Workshop, its Trophy Gate stops your trophies from dropping below 1,300. Tilt costs you more trophies than any matchup.

At 1,600, our best deck for Arena 6 (P.E.K.K.A's Playhouse) picks up where this guide ends. For the whole ladder, see all 32 Clash Royale arenas in order.

FAQ

What is Arena 5 in Clash Royale? Arena 5 is Builder's Workshop. It runs from 1,300 to 1,599 trophies, needs King Level 5, and leads into Arena 6, P.E.K.K.A's Playhouse, at 1,600 trophies.

What is the best deck for Arena 5? The Hog Rider cycle: Hog Rider, Mini P.E.K.K.A, Musketeer, Goblin Cage, Fireball, Zap, Skeletons and Electro Spirit. It averages 3.0 Elixir and every card is Common or Rare.

What cards unlock in Builder's Workshop? Seven: Hog Rider, Minion Giant, Flying Machine and Rocket (Rare), plus Zap, Bats and Mortar (Common).

Do you get a free Hero at Arena 5? Yes, if you're a new player. Supercell gives 200 Hero Coins when you reach Arena 5, enough to unlock one Hero of your choice from Magic Items → Heroes.

Is Minion Giant still good after the nerfs? Yes. It was nerfed on September 16, October 6 and October 19, 2026, but RoyaleTracker still rates it 51.0% at this trophy range, the best of the seven Arena 5 cards.

Can I use Witch or Skeleton Army at Arena 5? Not yet. Both are Epics, and Epic cards unlock at Arena 6 (P.E.K.K.A's Playhouse). Use Skeleton Dragons, Bomber or Goblin Cage in their place.

Why am I stuck at 1,500 trophies? Usually it's switching decks too often, or running a Hog Rider deck without a building. At 1,500 you're 100 trophies from Arena 6. Pick one of the three decks above, keep a building like Goblin Cage or Tombstone for enemy Hogs and Giants, and stop after two losses in a row.
