Diablo 4 Enchanting Guide (Season 14): Occultist Reroll Costs, Veiled Crystals & How to Stop Wasting Gold

Enchanting is the single biggest gold sink in the Diablo 4 endgame, and in Season 14 (Season of Death Awakening) it is also the difference between a good item and a perfect one. Every serious build eventually hits the same wall: you have a near-flawless Legendary with three great affixes and one dud, and the only way to fix it is to hand the Occultist a mountain of gold and Veiled Crystals — one reroll at a time. This guide covers exactly how enchanting works in patch 3.1.0/3.1.1, what each reroll actually costs, why the gold price climbs, and the concrete steps to chase max rolls without going broke.

Quick answer: Enchanting at the Occultist replaces one unwanted affix on a Rare or Legendary item with a new affix from that item's pool. You can reroll a single stat as many times as you want, but each attempt costs gold plus Veiled Crystals, and the gold price climbs with every reroll on that specific item until it reaches a cap (the cap was added back in Season 4). Materials are consumed whether you keep the new roll or revert to the old one. You cannot enchant a normal affix into a Greater Affix — those only appear on drops. To save gold: reroll cheap items, farm Veiled Crystals by salvaging Legendaries, and buy Diablo 4 Gold instead of grinding it if your time is worth more than the farm.

What Is Enchanting in Diablo 4?

Enchanting is the act of rerolling an affix (a stat line) on a piece of gear using the Occultist NPC. The Occultist lives in every major town and is marked on the map with a distinct symbol. You unlock it the first time a character claims a Legendary Aspect from the Codex of Power, or automatically once any character reaches Level 25.

The core rule is simple but strict: you can reroll one affix per item, and once you choose which affix to reroll, that is the only stat you can ever change on that item. Pick the wrong one and you are locked into it. So the first decision — which affix to reroll — matters more than any single roll.

A second rule catches new players off guard: enchanting an item makes it account-bound. If the item was tradeable, the moment you reroll it at the Occultist it can no longer be traded. Plan your trades before you touch the Occultist, not after.

How Does Enchanting Work Step by Step?

The loop at the Occultist is fast once you know it:

  • Open the Occultist's Enchanting tab and place the item you want to improve.
  • Select the one affix you want to reroll (this becomes permanent — you can only ever change this stat going forward).
  • The game offers you two replacement affixes to choose from, drawn from the item's valid affix pool.
  • Pay the gold + material cost to roll. You then decide: keep the new affix or revert to the previous one.
  • Either way, the materials are consumed — reverting does not refund anything. If you are still not happy, roll the same stat again.

Because the game only ever shows replacements that can legally appear on that gear slot, you cannot roll a stat that does not exist for that item. It also blocks affixes that cannot coexist, so you will never be offered a stat that conflicts with what is already locked on the piece. As the Season 14 Occultist reference notes (Icy Veins), "you have the ability to reroll it indefinitely… allowing you to elevate good legendary items to top-tier status."

What Does Enchanting Cost in Season 14?

Every reroll costs two things: gold and crafting materials. The material for Rare and Legendary gear is Veiled Crystals, plus a small amount of gold-value scaling based on the item's power. The important part — and the reason enchanting drains fortunes — is how the gold cost behaves.

The gold cost climbs with each reroll on the same item. Your first reroll on a piece is cheap. The second costs more. By the tenth or twentieth attempt on a stubborn stat, a single click can cost a large chunk of your gold reserve. This is intentional: it is the game's soft cap on chasing perfection. The frustration is a running theme in the community — as one Season 14 player put it in a thread that drew dozens of replies (r/diablo4):

"I can't stop enchanting for the max roll 😭"

That feeling — one more roll, one more stack of gold — is exactly the behavior the cost curve is built to punish.

The saving grace is that the per-reroll gold cost hits a maximum ceiling rather than scaling to infinity. Blizzard added this cap back in Season 4 (2024) — the official Season 4 patch notes introduced "a maximum limit on the cost for rerolling gear affixes at the Occultist to prevent the gold cost from escalating indefinitely." Before that, players were spending hundreds of millions of gold rerolling a single 4-of-4 item under the old uncapped formula. So while enchanting a high-end item is still brutally expensive, it can no longer bankrupt you infinitely on one piece — the price plateaus at the cap and stays there.

Note on exact numbers: Blizzard has never published a fixed per-reroll gold figure for Season 14, and the old "hundreds of millions per item" community math dates from the 2023 uncapped era. Treat any hard gold-per-roll number you see as an estimate — the honest current answer is "it scales up with attempts, then caps." Budget for a long tail, not a fixed price.

The materials side is more predictable. Each reroll consumes a set amount of Veiled Crystals, so on top of gold you need a steady supply of them — which is where most players actually get stuck.

How Do You Farm Veiled Crystals for Enchanting?

Veiled Crystals are the real bottleneck for heavy enchanters, not gold. The best sources in Season 14:

  • Salvage Legendary items. Every Legendary you break down at the Blacksmith yields Veiled Crystals. In the endgame you pick up dozens of Legendaries per hour — salvage everything you are not using instead of selling it. Gold you can buy; Crystals you have to break down gear for.
  • Salvage Rares at scale. Rare (yellow) items yield lesser materials but still feed the pool when salvaged in bulk during leveling and early Torment.
  • Helltides and Whisper caches. High-density farming activities dump large volumes of Legendaries, which convert directly into Crystals when salvaged.

The practical rule: never sell a Legendary you do not need — salvage it. A player who vendors Legendaries for gold and then can't afford Crystals to enchant has the economy backwards. Gold is the flexible currency; Veiled Crystals gate the actual reroll.

Can You Enchant Greater Affixes or Mythic Uniques?

This is the most common misconception, so it is worth stating plainly:

You cannot enchant a normal affix into a Greater Affix. Greater Affixes — the more powerful stat lines (1.5x normal strength) that appear on Ancestral Legendaries and Uniques from Torment 1 onward — can only be discovered on drops. No amount of gold at the Occultist will turn a standard affix into a Greater one. If you want a Greater Affix on a specific stat, you have to farm the drop, not craft it.

For Mythic Uniques, the picture changed in Season 14. The Occultist's reach was expanded so it can now touch some Unique and Mythic affixes — but a Mythic's identity affixes and its Unique Power can never be rerolled (the Unique Power is the whole reason the item exists). Only the non-identity, standard affixes are eligible, and even then the interaction is one of the most contested topics in the S14 community, so verify in-game on your specific item before you sink Crystals into it. For the vast majority of players, day-to-day enchanting still means rerolling that one weak affix on a great Rare or Legendary.

What Is the Smartest Way to Enchant Without Wasting Gold?

A few discipline rules separate players who enchant efficiently from players who go broke:

  • Only enchant items you will actually keep for the season. Do not reroll a placeholder Legendary you will replace in an hour. Wait for a genuine 3-of-4 keeper, then invest.
  • Reroll the worst affix, and be certain. Since the first affix you pick becomes the only rerollable stat forever, choose the clearly useless one. Never reroll a "pretty good" stat hoping for "slightly better" — you lock yourself out of fixing the truly bad one.
  • Accept "good enough." Chasing a max roll from a high roll can cost 10x what getting from a bad roll to a good roll costs. The last 5% of an affix is where the gold black hole lives.
  • Stockpile Crystals first. Do a salvage pass before a big enchanting session so you are not interrupted mid-roll with no materials.
  • Know when to buy. If a farm session to fund a build costs you more real-world time than it is worth, buying gold is the rational move — the whole point of enchanting is to finish your build, not to grind the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does enchanting cost in Diablo 4 Season 14? Each reroll costs gold plus Veiled Crystals. The gold price starts low and climbs with every reroll on the same item, until it hits a maximum cap (the cap was added in Season 4, so it no longer scales infinitely). Blizzard has never published an exact per-roll gold number for Season 14, so treat any hard figure as an estimate and budget for a long tail on a stubborn stat.

Can you reroll the same affix multiple times in Diablo 4? Yes. Once you choose which affix to reroll, you can reroll that single stat as many times as you can afford. However, that is the only stat on the item you can ever change — you cannot switch to rerolling a different affix later.

Do you lose materials if you revert an enchant? Yes. The gold and Veiled Crystals are consumed the moment you roll, whether you keep the new affix or revert to the previous one. There is no refund for reverting.

Can you enchant a Greater Affix in Diablo 4? No. Greater Affixes can only be found on dropped Ancestral Legendaries and Uniques — you cannot craft one at the Occultist. Enchanting only rerolls a normal affix into another normal affix from the item's pool.

Does enchanting make an item unable to be traded? Yes. Rerolling an item at the Occultist makes it account-bound. If you plan to trade an item, do it before you enchant, because there is no way to reverse the binding.

Where do I get Veiled Crystals for enchanting? Salvage Legendary and Rare items at the Blacksmith. Every Legendary you break down yields Veiled Crystals, so salvage the gear you are not using rather than selling it — Veiled Crystals, not gold, are usually the real limit on how much you can enchant.

Where is the Occultist in Diablo 4? The Occultist is found in every major town, marked on the map with its own symbol. It unlocks automatically at Level 25, or the first time any character claims a Legendary Aspect from the Codex of Power.
