Quick answer (TLDR): The Grounds is FC 27's new 100-player shared football world, built around a central Terrace plus three districts — Montclair, Zeiza and Parkside. It replaces the old Clubs menu entirely: your Clubhouse, 11v11 Drop In and Rush all live inside it. You play 7 Kickabouts (football mixed with dodgeball, basketball and bocce), Small-sided 1v1/2v2/3v3 matches, and progress 13 Archetype Mastery tracks that hand out permanent attribute boosts. Rewards are Season Points, Amps, Consumables, cosmetics and Coins — none of it builds your Ultimate Team club. It runs on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 only.
Current FC 27 phase: early access, day two. Ultimate and Ultimate Edition Plus players have been in since 17 September 23:00 UTC on PC and 18 September 00:00 regional time on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo (EA Launch Rewards). Worldwide launch is 24 September 23:00 UTC on PC and 25 September 00:00 regional time everywhere else. That six-day gap explains a lot of what you are seeing in The Grounds right now — more on that below.
Every mechanic in this guide comes from EA's official The Grounds & Clubs Deep Dive Pitch Notes, published 4 August 2026. Where the community is reporting something EA has not documented, it is flagged as a player report, not a fact.

What is The Grounds in FC 27?
The Grounds is a persistent, shared social world that swallows the entire Clubs and Pro Clubs experience. EA describes it as "the most social way to play EA SPORTS FC™ 27, bringing up to 100 players together in a shared football playground, built around a central Terrace and three distinct districts inspired by football cultures around the world."
Three things follow from that sentence and they are the three things most people get wrong:
- It is not a mode you queue into. It is the shell around Clubs. You walk to the Clubhouse Entrance to reach Leagues and Playoffs, and to the Stadium Access points to reach 11v11 Drop In or Rush.
- It is current-gen only. EA lists availability as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version of The Grounds.
- It is a live-service world. EA states the world "will continue to evolve throughout the year through new seasons, campaigns, and live updates, introducing changes to its atmosphere, activities, rewards, and ways to play." What is there on 19 September is the launch state, not the finished state.
What is in each district?
| Area | What it is | Why you go there |
|---|---|---|
| The Terrace | Central hub connecting all three districts | Clubhouse Entrance, information kiosks, The Grounds Store |
| The Clubhouse | Home of the Clubs experience | Leagues, Playoffs, Club Tournaments; updates to match your Club identity |
| Montclair | French urban football, cage pitches, metropolitan setting | Boutique Montclair district store |
| Zeiza | Argentina's Potrero spirit, European–Latin architecture | Tienda Zeiza district store |
| Parkside | Working-class UK football heritage | Parkside Market district store |
| 11v11 Stadium Access | Gateway out of the world | 11v11 Drop In |
| Rush Stadium Access | Gateway out of the world | Ranked Rush and Rush Tournaments |
Four named mentors sit across these areas and point you at content: Alex Hunter (returning from The Journey, player-improvement challenges), Kylian Mbappé (Small-sided, agility, creativity), Chloe Kelly (Kickabouts and grassroots-flavoured in-world activities) and Paulo Dybala (Clubs, Stadium events, Club identity).
How do Small-sided matches work — and why do they feel different?
Small-sided is the straight-football half of The Grounds: 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and an in-world Rush played on a dirt pitch, separate from the Rush Stadium queue. Matches last three minutes.
The rule set is where people get caught out. EA's exact wording:
"For 1v1, both teams will have one CPU goalkeeper and one outfield player, while 2v2 and 3v3 will feature smaller goals and no goalkeepers."
And on assistance:
"Shooting assistance is set to Manual and Passing Assistance is set to Fully Assisted with the rest of gameplay set the same as in regular 11v11 play."
That single line is why your finishing feels broken in the cages — manual shooting is forced on, regardless of your controller settings. Your passing, meanwhile, is on full assist whether you like it or not.
Fouls are enabled, and free kicks are a bespoke mini-game: the fouled player shoots from the exact spot of the foul (or the penalty spot if it happened in the box), dribbling and passing are disabled during the set piece, and every other player is held behind the taker for a set time. Miss that window and everyone unfreezes.
One live player report, not confirmed by EA: several early-access players on r/EASportsFC say 5-star skill moves are not executing in 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3. EA's Deep Dive says gameplay is otherwise "the same as in regular 11v11 play" and has published nothing about restricted skill moves, so treat this as an unverified bug report until EA or a title update addresses it.
What are Kickabouts, and how does each one score?
Kickabouts are the party half — EA mixes football with "other sports like Dodgeball, Basketball, or Bocce Ball." There are seven confirmed at launch, and each has its own published scoring system. This is the table nobody else has put in one place:
| Kickabout | Format | Length | Headline scoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bocce Ball | 3-player free-for-all | 3 × 1-min rounds | Small Target Bullseye 2,000 pts; Ring 300; Dead Zone −150 |
| Team Keepaway | 3v3 | One 3-min round | 5 pts/sec on the ball; first-time pass 40; 10-pass streak ×3 multiplier |
| The Big Race | 4-player free-for-all | 3 races, 2 min max each | 1st 9 pts, 2nd 6, 3rd 3, 4th 1 |
| Attacking Scenarios | 2v2 | 4 × 1-min rounds | Bronze 1 pt, Silver 2 pts, Gold 3 pts; Ball Hog up to 6 |
| Bucket Ball | 2v2 | 3 min + 1-min overtime | 3-pointer 3 pts; spike bonus +2 (4 total) |
| Balloon Ball | 4-player free-for-all | 3 rounds | Last standing 250 pts, then 150 / 75 / 50 |
| Goal Control | 1v1 | 3 × 1-min rounds | 1 pt/sec per controlled goal; 2 pts/sec if you hold all eight |
A few details worth knowing before you load in:
- Team Keepaway has an instant-win condition. Take a 1,000-point lead and the game ends on the spot. A foul costs you 100 points, so the slide-tackle spam that wins you Rush games actively loses this one.
- Balloon Ball gets a Sudden Death phase. With 30 seconds left, the golden power-up turns red and can no longer be collected, and a ball is fired at a random surviving player every three seconds.
- Bocce Ball targets shrink over time. A ball sitting in a Large Target when the timer expires scores 100, but if you can hold out until it splits down to Small, the same ball is worth 1,250 — or 2,000 on a bullseye.
- Drop Kick Targets are scattered across the whole world in Circle, Ring and Pentagon variants. EA specifically calls out "weekly Objectives challenging you to search every corner of the world and break as many Targets as you can find to earn rewards" — that is the cheapest weekly reward in the mode.
What do you actually earn in The Grounds?
Here is the part that matters for anyone deciding whether to spend early-access hours here.
The Grounds has its own Season Pass track. EA: "Play The Grounds and complete objectives to earn Season Points and unlock rewards including outfits, accessories, emotes, Amps, Consumables, and Coins. Upgrade to the Premium Pass for additional rewards." Season 1 runs 17 September to 22 October 2026.
Club Objectives are the second reward engine, split three ways:
- Club Milestones — long-term, Bronze/Silver/Gold tiers, earning fans that boost Club reputation.
- Club Weeklies and Seasonals — pay out Amps, Consumables and Coins.
- Elite Objectives — extra rewards reserved for Clubs that reach Elite Division.
An important hedge on the word "Coins." EA's Deep Dive lists "Coins" as a reward in both the Season Pass and Club Weeklies without specifying which currency. EA has not published anything stating that Grounds or Clubs Coins are Ultimate Team Coins, and historically the two economies have been separate. Do not plan a FUT budget around Grounds objectives until EA confirms it.
That is the honest summary: The Grounds progresses your Pro, your Club and your wardrobe. It does not progress your Ultimate Team club. If your goal this week is a squad that survives Division Rivals, the Grounds grind is a detour — see our FC 27 Season Pass reward breakdown for the track that actually hands you Ones to Watch items.

How do Masteries and Amps change your Pro?
This is the genuinely new progression layer, and it is permanent.
Masteries attach to Archetypes. Level an Archetype up and you unlock attribute boosts that apply to every build you ever use. EA's worked example: "reaching Level 10 with a Finisher Archetype unlocks +1 Finishing and +1 Composure to every archetype you use." There are 13 Archetype Mastery tracks:
| Archetype | Attributes boosted | Archetype | Attributes boosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shot Stopper | GK Positioning, GK Reflexes | Recycler | Def. Awareness, Short Passing |
| Sweeper Keeper | GK Handling, GK Diving | Maestro | Reactions, Ball Control |
| Progressor | Long Passing, Standing Tackle | Creator | Free Kick Accuracy, Vision |
| Boss | Aggression, Strength | Spark | Crossing, Dribbling |
| Marauder | Sliding Tackle, Sprint Speed | Magician | Curve, Acceleration |
| Disruptor | Stamina, Interceptions | Finisher | Composure, Finishing |
| Target | Balance, Jumping | — | — |
The strategic read: because boosts stack across builds, the optimal long-game is to level several Archetypes to their milestones rather than mono-maining one. EA says it plainly — "the more archetypes you master over time, the better your Pro becomes across the board."
Two quality-of-life changes land alongside it. All Archetypes are unlocked by default from the first login, and Archetype resets no longer cost Coins or a reset consumable — you can now fine-tune individual attributes instead of nuking the whole build, from the in-world menu, the Clubhouse, or inside Clubs and Rush lobbies.
Amps are the temporary layer on top. Four tiers across two categories:
| Tier | Category | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Standard | Attribute boosts |
| Tier 2 | Standard | Greater attribute boosts |
| Tier 3 | Signature | Greater attribute boosts, PlayStyles and Perks |
| Tier 4 | Signature | Greater attribute boosts, PlayStyles+ and Perks |
You can equip three at a time — two Standard plus one Signature. They apply to all stadium matches and in-world Rush, and each Amp expires after a set number of matches. You earn them through Objectives, Live Events, Campaigns and season progression, and EA confirms "additional Amps will also be available from the Store." Tier 4 Amps granting PlayStyles+ is the line worth watching: PlayStyles+ are capped at 3 per player in FC 27, cut from 5 in FC 26, which makes a rented PlayStyle+ unusually valuable.
Why does The Grounds feel empty in early access?
Because the people who paid for early access are not the people The Grounds was built for.
Two days into early access, r/EASportsFC threads report being unable to fill 4v4, 3v3 or 11v11 drop-in lobbies on a Saturday night, with only 1v1 and 2v2 finding games. The most-upvoted community explanation is blunt and probably correct: almost everyone who pays extra to play a week early is an Ultimate Team player chasing the pre-launch market, and the casual and Clubs audience arrives with the Standard Edition on 25 September.
Several early-access players in those threads say the same thing in different words — they pre-ordered, they have no intention of touching The Grounds, and they went straight to Rivals. That is a population problem, not a design verdict, and it should correct itself inside a week.
Practical takeaway: if you want to judge The Grounds fairly, judge it on 25–26 September, not on early-access weekend. If you want to use it now, stick to 1v1, 2v2 and Kickabouts, which need the fewest bodies to fill.
Is The Grounds worth your time before 25 September?
A straight ranking of where an early-access hour goes furthest right now:
- Ultimate Team market and Squad Foundations — the early-access window is the one time the FUT economy is small enough to move. Highest value, easily.
- Season Pass objective progress — Season 1 is 35 days and the daily Season Point cap makes the back half unforgiving if you start late.
- Kickabouts and Small-sided in The Grounds — fun, fills reasonably fast, and feeds Grounds Season Points plus Drop Kick Target weeklies.
- Clubs Leagues, Playoffs and 11v11 Drop In — worth waiting for. Lobby depth is the whole experience and it is not there yet.
Want the FUT half handled while you explore The Grounds? The Grounds builds your Pro — it does not build your Ultimate Team club. That part still needs coins, wins and evolution grinds.

FAQ
Is The Grounds replacing Pro Clubs in FC 27? It is absorbing it. EA states "the Clubs experience now lives inside The Grounds, including the return of Leagues and Playoffs." You reach Clubs by walking into the Clubhouse rather than picking it from a menu, and the Clubhouse and Stadium visually update to match your Club's customisation.
Can I play The Grounds on PS4 or Xbox One? No. EA lists The Grounds as available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 only. Last-gen owners get the rest of the game, not this world.
Do The Grounds Coins work in Ultimate Team? EA has not said. The Deep Dive lists "Coins" among Season Pass and Club Weekly rewards without naming the currency, so treat them as Clubs-side until EA publishes otherwise. For a FUT balance you can actually spend on the transfer market, see our FC 27 launch-week coin methods guide.
Why can't I use my normal shooting assistance in Small-sided? Because EA forces it. Shooting assistance is set to Manual and passing to Fully Assisted in all Small-sided matches, and there is no published option to change it.
How many Amps can I have equipped at once? Three — two Standard Amps and one Signature Amp. Each expires after a set number of matches, and they apply to stadium matches and in-world Rush.
What are Club Tournaments and what House Rules do they use? They are 11v11 competitions for Clubs, separate from Leagues and Playoffs, with variable round counts and rewards. EA lists six House Rules that can be applied: Mystery Ball, King of the Hill, No Rules, Headers and Volleys, Survival and Long Range.
Is The Grounds in the free version of FC 27? EA has not confirmed the full mode list for the free client in its Grounds Deep Dive. Check our FC 27 Lite breakdown for what is confirmed playable without buying the game.
